<<Femicide in Iran: 17-Year-Old Victim of Child Marriage Killed in
So-Called <Honor> Killing
Nazanin Balochi, a 17-year-old victim of child marriage, was murdered by
her cousin in the city of Chanef, located in Nik Shahr County, Sistan
and Baluchistan Province. The crime was reportedly motivated by
so-called <honor.> According to a report received by the Hengaw Human
Rights Organization, on the morning of Saturday, September 7, 2024,
Nazanin Balochi, from the village of Gowehch in Chanef, was shot dead by
her cousin three weeks after separating from her husband, who had
repeatedly abused her. Nazanin, forced into marriage at the age of 14,
was killed by two shots to the head from a handgun. The news outlet
Haalvsh reported that the perpetrator, identified as <A.B.>, traveled
from Chabahar to Nazanin’s family home on Friday, September 6, after
learning of her separation. Upon arriving, he physically assaulted her,
demanding that she confess to having a secret relationship with another
man, a claim Nazanin vehemently denied, noting that she did not even own
a phone. One of her relatives intervened, preventing the murder that
day. However, the next morning, A.B. returned to Nazanin's home and
killed her in front of her 15-year-old sister. After committing the
crime, he contacted his relatives, informing them of the murder and
stating that Nazanin had pleaded for her life before he shot her.>>

And other actual news:
Jina Amini
Iranwire - September 13, 2024 - by Maryam Dehkordi
<<Before Mahsa Amini Anniversary, Iran Tightens Control by Blocking
Activists' Phones
Several Iranian citizens and prominent political and civil activists
have reported that their active mobile phone SIM cards were blocked
without prior notice recently. Upon inquiry with telecommunications
providers, some learned that the blocks were ordered by the Islamic
Republic's internet police, following orders from judicial and security
authorities. Many of the individuals had faced restrictions on social
services due to receiving hijab-related text messages or having their
social media activities monitored. However, some political and civil
figures believe that security agencies may be preparing legal cases
against them, though the exact method remains unclear. "When my SIM card
was first disconnected, I assumed it was time to pay the bill, and that
I had overlooked it due to personal issues," recounted Rana, a woman
living in Tehran. "After confirming I had no outstanding balance, I
thought it must be a technical issue. Later, I called my husband, who
works nearby, and asked if his phone had lost service. He said no. When
my phone still had no signal by 2 PM, I visited the telecommunications
office and was informed that the issue stemmed from a judicial order."
Rana, who had received numerous hijab-related warnings via text message
over the past two years, realized her SIM card had been blocked due to
her choice of clothing. "I'd heard about the confiscation of cars, but
now they're also targeting our access to basic services. For two years,
the streets have felt like a battlefield for me and others like me.
"We've been denied access to cafes, restaurants, and transportation. We
face challenges at every turn - whether we drive, take a taxi, or walk.
Now they're even blocking our phones and bank accounts. Life feels
anything but normal, but I refuse to betray the sacrifices of people
like Mahsa Amini and others." Similar incidents have been reported by
other citizens or their relatives in recent days. Many believe this is
part of an increasing wave of pressure, timed to coincide with the
second anniversary of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, aimed at
building cases against political and civil activists. Elaheh Khosravi, a
former journalist, shared on her X account: "A friend's SIM card was
disconnected, followed by a text with a number to call for more
information. When they called, authorities said they would be summoned
for their Instagram activity. They're starting early ahead of Mahsa's
anniversary this Sunday."
Shahriar Shams, a student activist and former detainee from the recent
nationwide protests, also took to X to describe a similar experience:
"This morning I found out my SIM card was blocked. I have no idea why,
but as long as the Islamic Republic exists, systematic harassment will
never end." In an interview with IranWire, Rana, the Tehran resident,
explained that when she sought further clarification, she was directed
to the Internet police. "My SIM card was blocked, and they told me to go
to the judicial authorities. I went to the prosecutor's office, but
there was no criminal case. Then they told me to go to the FATA
[internet] police. "When I arrived there, I was told it was due to
driving with inappropriate clothing and posting images that violated
Islamic norms on social media. My page is private, and the only thing on
it are personal photos. But they had printed some of my images and added
them to my file. In the end, I bought a new SIM card and abandoned the
issue." It appears that unusual punishments for those opposing the
mandatory hijab - or individuals labeled as <norm breakers> by the
government - go beyond SIM card blocking.
A citizen in southern Bushehr told IranWire about another example of
these punitive measures: "I own a traditional clothing store and have
held a business license for many years. But last year, they refused to
renew my license because I hadn't complied with the mandatory hijab. I
went everywhere seeking help but received no answers. Eventually, my
brother obtained a license, and I now work under his name. Recently,
they blocked my bank account. When I inquired, they said it was because
of a hijab violation, and I wouldn’t be able to access my account until
I paid the penalty." Failing to track blocked SIM cards can have serious
consequences for individuals involved in civic or political activities.
A source told IranWire: "Recently, the judiciary has begun blocking the
SIM cards or closing the bank accounts of any activist or political
figure they consider a threat, under the guise of legal action based on
the judicial reform document." Although smartphones still allow
emergency or SOS calls in such situations, the exact impact on phones
remains unclear, and there are no guarantees about what other
limitations might follow. According to the source, security agencies or
the Ministry of Intelligence request the prosecutors to intervene. The
prosecutors then instruct phone operators to block the active SIM cards.
"There are many such cases. Some people were targeted due to receiving
hijab-related text messages, while others had been active on social
media. Some are political and civil activists who responded to the
killing of Mahsa Amini in 2022 and the protests. In several instances,
even private social media pages, which had been inactive for a long time
after the protests, were scrutinized, and users later discovered that
their 2022 activities were documented in security files." The source
also highlighted growing concerns among activists about security
agencies' access to their private social media accounts, conversations,
and personal data: "Many people facing SIM card blocks rely on their
phones to receive one-time passwords (OTPs) for banking or other
services. These OTPs are not always protected by two-factor
authentication, which means that security agencies can easily retrieve
personal information. By blocking and reissuing the SIM card, they gain
access to critical data, including password-reset SMS messages, which
can then be used to build cases against them." Moussa Barzin, IranWire's
legal advisor, explains that the issuance of punishments, such as
restricting social services for opponents of the mandatory hijab, has
been happening for one or two years, though none of these actions
involve formal criminal charges. "There is no criminal case against
these individuals," he notes. "Complaints are filed with the FATA
[internet] Police or the Morality Police. These actions are 100 per cent
illegal in the absence of any criminal charges. If a criminal complaint
existed, the FATA police could block, for example, the Instagram page or
the SIM card of a person, but only if relevant. For instance, if someone
used Instagram for fraud or harassed others via phone, such measures
would be legal." >>

Vahideh Mohammadifar and Darius Mehrjui
Iranwire - September 13, 2024
<<Court Reopens Mehrjui Murder Case Over Flaws
A court overseeing the trial of defendants in the murder case of
renowned Iranian cinema director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh
Mohammadifar, is set to reconvene to address ambiguities in the case.
The 83-year-old Mehrjui and Mohammadifar were stabbed to death last year
in their home in Karaj, near Tehran. According to the Etemad newspaper,
the court proceedings are scheduled for this weekend. This development
follows the Supreme Court of Iran's decision to accept objections raised
by the lawyer representing Mehrjui's family. The highest judicial body
ruled that the initial investigation was flawed and ordered a more
thorough inquiry to address the concerns raised. As a result, the case
was referred back to the Fardis Court for further examination. Mehrjui,
known as a co-founder of Iran's new-wave cinema movement in the 1970s,
focused on realism. His wife was a screenwriter and costume designer.
Their murders have caused shock and outrage among Iranians, with many
drawing parallels to political assassinations that have rocked the
country over the past decades.>>

<<Charlie Hebdo Dedicates Issue to Iran's Uprising
French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has announced the publication of
a special issue dedicated to the second anniversary of Iran's Woman,
Life, Freedom movement. The special edition, set to feature research,
reports, and interviews, will focus on the women's rights movement
sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
Charlie Hebdo shared preview images from the issue.
"Since the murder of Mahsa Amini, Charlie has been following the ongoing
revolution in Iran," the magazine said in a post on X. "Find our
research, reports, and interviews in a special edition dedicated to the
Woman, Life, Freedom Movement," it added. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish
woman, died while in the custody of Iran’s morality police after being
detained for wearing her hijab <improperly.> Her death sparked
nationwide protests, which became known as the Woman, Life, Freedom
movement. Charlie Hebdo has been a vocal supporter of the Iranian
protest movement, consistently publishing related content. The
magazine's cartoons and commentary have made it a target of criticism
and even sanctions from the Iranian government. Iran's Ministry of

<<Iran Summons 14 Teachers Union Activists on Serious Charges
Iran's security agencies have summoned as many as 14 union activists and
members of the Kurdistan Teachers Union ahead of Mahsa Amini's death
anniversary. The educators face serious charges, including <gathering
and colluding against the security of the country,> <propaganda against
the Islamic Republic>, and <disrupting public order.> Iran's Teachers
Union has released a statement regarding these summons. They highlighted
that many Kurdistan educators and teachers' union activists have already
faced repercussions in the wake of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement,
which took place after Amini's custodial death. They have also been
deprived of union rights such as ranking benefits. The council further
said, "In the last few months, hundreds of cases have been opened with
various accusations against teachers' union activists in the boards of
administrative violations of education, with the cooperation of district
managers and security guards of this department." Condemning what they
describe as "repressive actions and continuous efforts to silence the
voices of teachers and union activists," the council emphasized
teachers' rights to freedom of expression, protest, and union activity.
They demanded an end to repression and unfair trials, and called for the
restoration of teachers' union rights. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish
woman, died in the custody of Iran's morality police in 2022 after being

<<Half of Tehran Schools Deemed 'Unsafe' for Students
With the new school year set to begin in less than ten days, alarming
safety concerns have emerged regarding educational institutions across
Iran, particularly in Tehran. Qodratullah Mohammadi, managing director
of Tehran Municipality's fire department and safety services, has warned
that half of the schools in the capital are "unsafe" for students.
According to Mohammadi, one out of every two schools in the capital is
considered unsafe.
He stated that since last year, "not a single case of a school
implementing security measures has been reported." The Crisis Management
Organization has been involved in addressing these safety concerns. They
have inspected half of Tehran's 2,800 schools, with plans to complete
inspections of all schools by the end of the year. The problem extends
beyond Tehran, with reports of unsafe schools in other parts of the
country.
On September 8, the governor of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province
announced that it has some of the most unsafe schools in the country,
with 483 stone classrooms causing particular concern.>>

Sadaf Heydari Suspended for Two Semesters
Sadaf Heydari, a student at Tabriz University, has been sentenced by the
university's disciplinary committee to a two-semester suspension from
her studies. The decision was made following a post she shared on her
Instagram account regarding the death of Ebrahim Raisi. The post, which
coincided with the crash of Raisi's helicopter on May 21, led to
immediate action from the university. At 9 PM that same night, her
family was informed that Sadaf Heydari had not only been suspended but
also expelled from her dormitory on the direct orders of the university
president.
Sadaf Heydari, a student who began her studies at Tabriz University in
2021, faces a significant academic setback due to these disciplinary
actions.

Shaqayeq Akbari Suspended for Four Semesters
Shaqayeq Akbari, a PhD student in Political Sociology at Tarbiat Modares
University, was sentenced to a four-semester suspension by the Ministry
of Science's central disciplinary committee. The charge against Shaqayeq
Akbari involved activities deemed anti-government, which she allegedly
carried out through social media posts and an interview with the Ham-Mihan
newspaper. In these posts and interviews, Shaqayeq Akbari criticized the
heightened security measures and the behavior of university security
forces toward students. Previously, the university's disciplinary
committee had recommended Akbari's expulsion, but the final verdict was
a lengthy suspension. This punishment also includes time from her
previous 12-month suspension, potentially putting her academic future at
