War on women
Iranwire - September 12, 2024
<<'War on Women': Amnensty Slams Iran's Continued Crackdown on
Protesters
Iranians continue to endure the devastating consequences of the Islamic
Republic's brutal crackdown on the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising amid
systematic impunity for crimes under international law, Amnesty
International said. "No effective, impartial and independent criminal
investigations have taken place into the serious human rights violations
and crimes under international law by Iranian authorities during and in
the aftermath of the nationwide protests of September-December 2022,
including security forces’ extensive and unlawful use of force and
firearms," Amnesty said in a report on Wednesday. "Security forces fired
assault rifles, shot guns loaded with metal pellets and teargas
canisters, and severely beat protesters with batons, resulting in the
unlawful killing of hundreds of protesters and bystanders, including
scores of children, and life-changing injuries to many more. The
authorities have sought to silence relatives seeking truth and justice
for the unlawful killings of their loved ones through arbitrary
detention, unjust prosecution, death threats and other relentless
harassment. Two years on, the authorities have also further escalated
their assault on human rights, waging a 'war on women and girls' through
an increasingly violent crackdown on those defying draconian compulsory
veiling laws and have intensified their use of the death penalty to
silence dissent," the human rights organization added in its report.
Meanwhile, The Islamic Republic's security forces have arrested several
people in Kurdish towns ahead of the second anniversary of Mahsa Amini's
death. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died in the custody of Iran's
morality police after being detained for wearing her hijab <improperly>.
Her death sparked nationwide protests, which became known as the Woman,
Life, Freedom movement. "The anniversary of the "Woman Life Freedom"
uprising is a haunting reminder that countless people in Iran are still
reeling from the consequences of the authorities' brutal crackdown.
Victims, survivors and their relatives continue to be denied truth,
justice and reparation for crimes under international law and other
grave human rights violations committed by Iranian officials during and
in the aftermath of the uprising,” said Diana Eltahawy, Amnesty
International's Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North
Africa. "The Iranian authorities have spent the past two years waging a
propaganda campaign of denial and distortion to conceal evidence of
their crimes and attempting to intimidate survivors and victims’
families into silence. With no prospect for independent and impartial
investigations domestically, it is imperative that states initiate
criminal investigations into the crimes committed by the Iranian
authorities through their domestic prosecution offices under the
principle of universal jurisdiction," she added.>>

Iranwire - September 12, 2024<<
<<Iran Imprisons Labour Activist to Serve Sentence
The Islamic Republic's authorities have arrested and transferred a
retired worker and labor activist to Evin prison. Esmail Gerami, a
workers' rights advocate, has been sentenced to one year in prison by
Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The court found Gerami
guilty of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic> for his involvement
in the retirees' protests. The verdict, issued by Branch 26, was
delivered to Gerami while he was in detention, following a hearing held
on August 27. On August 7, security forces raided Gerami's home,
confiscating personal items, including his laptop, mobile phone, and
national ID card, according to the HRANA human rights website. Four days
later, Gerami was arrested after complying with the court summons and
was transferred to the quarantine ward of Evin Prison. Gerami has a long
history of facing arrests and judicial confrontations due to his
continued activism for workers' rights.>>

Iranwire - September 12, 2024
<<Iran Arrests Mother of Protester Slain in 2022 Protest Crackdown
Security forces of the Islamic Republic have arrested the mother of a
protester killed during a crackdown on the 2022 uprising. Dayeh Goli,
mother of slain protester Hiva Janjan, was arrested and had to endure
six hours of interrogation, according to IranWire's sources. This
interrogation was conducted without a judicial warrant and as part of
ongoing efforts by the authorities to pressure victims' families. In
recent days, arrests and harassment of the families and mothers of those
killed in the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising have intensified. On
Wednesday, Milad Mohammadi, the brother of Shahriar Mohammadi, killed
during the 2022 protests, reported that security agents had raided his
mother Dayeh Mina's residence. With the second anniversary of Mahsa
Amini's death in the custody of the morality police approaching,
pressure on the families of those killed during the protests, as well as
other petitioners' families, has increased.>>

The Islamic Republic's court of appeals has upheld a one-year prison
sentence for Motahareh Goonehi, a suspended student of Tehran
University.
Goonehi was found guilty of <propaganda activities against the Islamic
Republic in favor of enemy media.> The charge is based on her protest
against the death sentence of rapper Toomaj Salehi. Goonehi was arrested
by IRGC Intelligence forces in Tehran on May 1, following a summons.
She was detained for four days in Evin Prison before being released on
bail. Goonehi and her husband, Mehdi Hadizadeh, both students at Tehran

the second anniversary of the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's
so-called <morality police> in Tehran. Since political parties, civil

Delal Botan
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 12, 2024 - by HAVRIN CENGAWER
<<Delal Botan: Built-up anger started the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" revolution
"The anger and hatred that were built up against the government turned
into a revolutionary uprising," said Delal Botan of the HPJ, pointing to
the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising that started in Iran and Eastern
Kurdistan.
News Center- In an interview with NuJINHA, Delal Botan, member of the
East Kurdistan Women's Defense Units (HPJ) commented on the "Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi" uprising that started in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan following the
killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called <morality police> on
September 16, 2022. The "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" revolution did not emerge
from just a headscarf or a strand of hair, Delal Botan said. "The anger
and hatred that were built up against the government turned into a
revolutionary uprising. This anger was no longer an ordinary uprising.
When we looked at people's faces, we could see how angry they were about
the oppression inflicted against them by the government for years. Years
of oppression suddenly exploded like a bomb, and women led this
explosion."
'A feeling of excitement and search arose inside us'
Speaking about the first moments of the uprising, Delal Botan said, "In
the first days, there were not many protests in our region. We were
three friends at school and decided to attend the protests. Although we
felt fear and hesitation, we chanted our slogans. Slowly, our other
friends joined us. We chanted the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" slogan, which we
did not really know what it meant at first. During the protests, a
feeling of excitement and search arose inside us and we began to ask
questions such as 'Women means life, why do we not have this life?' A
movement that emphasizes the importance of women and women's thoughts
exists. A life based on the ideology and philosophy of leader Apo
(Abdullah Ocalan) led me to participate in the struggle for freedom."
'Always make great efforts for your existence'
At the end of her speech, Delal Botan called on women and young people
to "always make great efforts for your existence and freedom. You are
strong and there is still a long way to go. Leader Apo says, 'don't
betray your dreams, and fight for freedom'.">>

Political prisoner Kazem Alinejad set himself on fire in Iran's
notorious Evin prison, according to reports received by IranWire.
Alinejad was taken to Taleghani Hospital in Tehran for treatment and
returned to Evin prison after his wounds were treated. He was sentenced
in December 2023 by the 26th branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court,
headed by Judge Iman Afshari. His sentence includes five years
imprisonment for <insulting sacred beliefs,> five years for <assembly
and collusion with intent to commit crimes against national security,>
and one year for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> Additional
punishments include a two-year ban on living in Tehran and neighboring
provinces, a two-year prohibition on membership in political and social
groups, and confiscation of his mobile phone. Meanwhile, Arsham Rezaei,
another political prisoner at Evin, has been transferred to solitary
confinement. It comes as several political prisoners in Ward 4 of Evin
prison began a sit-in protest. Some prisoners have even sewn their lips
shut to protest the prison authorities' refusal to meet their demands
regarding detention conditions.>>

<<Self-Immolation Attempt After School Rejects Child's Enrollment
The father of a Baluch student attempted self-immolation outside the
General Directorate of Education in Sistan and Baluchistan province on
Tuesday. The desperate act followed the father's repeated but
unsuccessful attempts to enroll his child in a school, which were met
with unexplained resistance from school administrators, according to the
Haalvsh news website. A source reported that the father had made several
visits to a school near his residence in Mehr city. Despite his efforts,
school officials consistently denied his enrollment request without
providing any justification.
Frustrated by the lack of response from both the school and the General
Directorate of Education regarding his complaints, the father attempted
to set himself on fire. On the day of the incident, after being denied a
meeting with the General Director of Education, he doused himself with
petrol in an apparent self-immolation attempt. However, quick
intervention by bystanders prevented the act from taking place. In
response to media coverage, Ali Farhadi, the spokesperson for the
education department, acknowledged the possibility of mistreatment at
the school level. <We do not deny that there may have been poor
treatment at the school,> Farhadi said, adding that such cases are
handled by a unit responsible for performance evaluation and responding
to complaints.>>

Faezeh Hashemi
Iranwire - September 11, 2024
<<Exclusive: Faezeh Hashemi Unveils Suffering and Tyranny in Evin Prison
IranWire has obtained a letter about the condition of the women's ward
in Evin Prison, written by political activist Faezeh Hashemi, the
daughter of later Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. In the
letter, Hashemi criticizes the behavior of some women political
prisoners, describing certain dynamics as "fascist behavior." She draws
a parallel between these actions and the broader approach of the Islamic
Republic towards society.
Hashemi was arrested during the 2022 nationwide protests and sentenced
to five years in prison on charges of <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic> and <disturbing public order by participating in unauthorized
gatherings.> At the beginning of her letter, Hashemi says she has faced
pressure from security forces since 1991 and has been summoned for
investigation and trial in 12 cases. Reflecting on the relationships
among the prisoners, Hashemi compares the "small prison space, housing
65 inmates" to Iran's population of 90 million. She notes that, unlike
the government, which holds all the "tools of tyranny and oppression,"
prisoners lack similar power. She adds: "We are decades away from
institutionalizing democracy, which is a prerequisite for reforming both
society and government." She writes, "Evin Prison's women's political
ward is a neighborhood of familiar fighters, filled with both good and
bad memories, bitter and sweet moments, shared beliefs, and sometimes
divergent actions. There are loud theorists, but little action. Some
behave like small dictators, imposing what they fought against on their
fellow prisoners. Those who are less able to stand up to them suffer
from narrow-mindedness, slander, and character assassination. Sometimes,
it even escalates to physical violence."
Hashemi adds, "In this environment, some prisoners act like an internal
pressure group – assigning tasks, defining red lines, and depriving
others of their freedom. They stigmatize, slander, and threaten anyone
who disagrees with them, creating an atmosphere of terror and
suffocation. Why? Because someone didn't follow their lead, criticized
them, or challenged their authority. Even more disturbingly, some other
well-known figures remain silent or complicit in this oppressive
behavior." According to Hashemi, over 90 percent of the prisoners in
Evin's women’s ward are newcomers, many of whom are left "shocked and
regretful" after a week, realizing that "the people we wanted to meet
are not who we thought they were."
Hashemi highlights instances such as voting sessions where the votes of
some political prisoners were not counted. She also points out that some
prisoners are labeled as "hired" or "on a mission." She further
describes how exaggerated and false news about prisoners and events is
spread inside the jail. Those who protest are accused of "normalizing
cruelty," she notes. During the presidential election, some imprisoned
women wanted to vote, but others "stood in the corridor from 8 am to 12
pm, blocking the way like security agents and preventing them from
voting." The atmosphere was so tense that even the prison guards were
afraid to open the door, she claims. Writing the letter on the condition
of women political prisoners, Hashemi explains that publishing it was
"one of the hardest decisions of her 60-year life." She ended the letter
with a personal note: "Recently, my cousin, who strongly believes in the
meaning of dreams, told me she dreamt that I was killed in prison by my
cellmates. I'm just saying, it's up to you." >>

Faezeh Hashemi
Iranwire - September 11, 2024
<<Political Prisoner Hashemi's Lawyer Seeks Parole Despite Opposition
The lawyer representing political prisoner and former Iranian
president's daughter, Faezeh Hashemi, has announced efforts to negotiate
with Tehran's prosecutor or the head of Evin Prison's prosecutor's
office for his client's conditional release. However, these attempts by
the lawyer, Mohammad Hossein Aghasi, have faced opposition so far.
Aghasi referenced a recent letter by Faezeh Hashemi, published by
IranWire, saying, "With the publication of this letter, we should not
expect parole for my client. They probably would not cooperate with us
in this regard, as they never did before. I have not seen any
cooperation from the judicial authorities in any field." The letter,
published by IranWire this week, details the situation in the women's
ward of Evin Prison. Hashemi, a political activist and daughter of late
Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, in her letter, criticizes
the behavior of some women political prisoners. Hashemi compares the
"small prison space, housing 65 inmates" to Iran's population of 90
million. She notes that, unlike the government, which holds all the
"tools of tyranny and oppression," prisoners lack similar power.
Regarding potential measures to protect Faezeh Hashemi after the
letter's publication, Aghasi stated, "Together with Mr. Mohsen Hashemi,
my client's brother, we will try our best to meet with the Tehran
prosecutor or the head of the Evin prosecutor's office to discuss what
we can do for her." Hashemi, who openly criticized the policies of the
Islamic Republic in the past, was arrested in September 2022, soon after
the start of nationwide protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in
police custody. The activist was sentenced to five years in prison on
charges of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic> and <disturbing
public order and peace by participating in illegal gatherings.> >>

Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha
Iranwire - September 11, 2024
<<Iran Re-Imposes Travel Ban on Two Filmmakers
Iranian filmmaker Maryam Moghadam has revealed that she and her husband,
fellow filmmaker Behtash Sanaeeha, have once again been banned from
leaving Iran. The couple's passports were confiscated by security
agencies at the airport when they attempted to leave Iran on Tuesday.
Moghadam shared the news via an Instagram post, stating, "Yesterday, as
I was preparing to visit my family in Sweden after a long time and
possibly attend our film screening, they confiscated my passport again
at the airport. They informed us that both Behtash and I are once again
banned from leaving the country." This incident follows shortly after
the return of their previously confiscated passports. Moghadam expressed
her frustration, asking, "If they didn't intend to allow us to leave,
why did they return our passports? Is it just to torment us and inflict
psychological harm?" In her post, Moghadam directly addressed Iranian
President Masoud Pezeshkian: "Mr. Pezeshkian, it's evident to every

<<Milad Panahandeh Shot Twice in the Head by Police in Front of Family
Milad Panahandeh, a 26-year-old man from southwestern Dehdasht, was
fatally shot by a police chief on September 1, IranWire has learned.
Milad, a member of the Lor ethnic group, was killed by two bullets to
the head. IranWire sources confirmed that a large number of police
officers had been deployed to arrest Milad in connection with the murder
of an Afghan immigrant. The Afghan man had been killed earlier during a
violent clash between local villagers and Afghan immigrants. A source
told IranWire that Milad had planned to surrender peacefully. Despite
his mother's encouragement, saying in the officers' presence, <You have
my blessing, go with them,> a police commander shot him twice in the
head. The source added that Milad's mother and several other women from
the village were just ten meters away when the shooting occurred. Milad
was surrounded by officers and had no opportunity to escape. Milad was a
seasonal worker and left behind two young children, aged two and four. A
second source told IranWire that, unlike the case of Mohammad Mirmousavi,
a young man who recently died under police torture in Lahijan, the
officer who shot Milad has faced no charges and "is still walking free."
ISNA news agency reported the killing of a <fugitive murderer> on
September 1, citing Colonel Mohammad Mousavi, the police commander of
Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. However, the report omitted Milad
Panahandeh's name and background. Colonel Mousavi claimed that the
police had <trapped> the <fugitive> following an armed confrontation.
According to Mousavi, the police had gone to the village to arrest the
suspect. He stated that Milad tried to flee with the help of his family,
leading to an armed standoff during which the officers acted <in
accordance with the law on the use of weapons.> However, this version of
events is part of a troubling pattern in Iran. Media outlets and
security forces often label individuals as <fugitive murderers> before
any formal accusations or trials, even by the judiciary's standards.
Human rights activists and international organizations have repeatedly
condemned this practice, arguing that it dehumanizes suspects,
especially those targeted by police or military forces. Sources close to
the case told IranWire that the police withheld key details. While the
police labeled Milad an <escaped murderer,> an individual familiar with
the situation said that all other suspects in the fight had already been
arrested. The police had come to the village to question Milad.
According to this source, Milad's relatives, including his cousins and
father, had approached the officers, urging them to allow the family to
bring Milad to them peacefully, warning that entering the village might
provoke conflict. Despite this, the police refused to leave. The source
emphasized that Milad had no intention of fleeing. "Milad had already
left his house and was outside the village when the officers chased him.
He even told them, 'What do you want from me? I'll come on my own.'"
Milad's mother accompanied him when he left the house and repeatedly
urged him to surrender to the police. The source stressed that Milad
couldn't have escaped even if he had wanted to, as the village was small
and the number of officers was overwhelming. This eyewitness, close to
Milad, described the scene: "His mother was just 10 meters away when it
happened. She witnessed her son being shot in cold blood. Other village
women were there too. It's pure injustice. They should have arrested
him, interrogated him, and then followed the law. But without a trial,
without even taking him to the police station, they shot him in the
head. Twice. He was a young man with two children. Why shoot him in the
head? If they needed to stop him, they could have shot him in the leg."
The source also noted that Milad had no serious criminal history. "He
only had one previous fight with a cousin, and they settled it with
compensation. That was his only record." A video circulating on social
media shows villagers clashing with police forces following Milad
Panahandeh's killing. In the footage, recorded from a distance inside
the village, the sound of gunfire can be heard as villagers hurl stones
at police officers and their vehicles. An informed source told Iranwire
that the video was taken after Milad was killed, as enraged villagers
attacked the police out of anger and frustration. "The villagers struck
back with stones and sticks, damaging police cars," the source
explained. "They refused to hand over the body and demanded that the
authorities pay for the damage to the vehicles." The source also
emphasized that while the villagers possess ancestral weapons, none were
used in the confrontation. Referring to the case of Mohammad Mirmousavi
- a 36-year-old man who died under police torture in northern Lahijan
after being arrested - the source noted the stark contrast in how the
government responded. Mirmousavi's death sparked widespread public
outcry, leading even government officials, including the president, to
address the issue. "But here, no one hears the voices of our people,"
the source said. "They claim Milad had a weapon and resisted arrest. If
he had a weapon, why didn't anyone get hurt? Our people are poor. This
is an oil-rich area, but all you see here is misery. No one listens to
us." Mohammad Mirmusavi died in police custody in early September. His
death prompted Iran's president, interior minister, and police commander
to order the formation of a special committee to investigate the death.
His Family Lives in Deep Poverty
According to information received by IranWire, Milad Panahandeh was a
seasonal worker, and his family relied on a small flock of 10-15 sheep,
which his father had borrowed from the relief committee, and about one
hectare of dry, unproductive land to survive. A source close to the
family explained that their dire financial situation has played a role
in the lack of attention from authorities regarding Milad's case: "They
are truly oppressed. They are very poor - just farmers and herders
without a voice to advocate for them. That's why the police commander
felt free to say whatever he wanted."
The source went on to say that the family's poverty has contributed to
the failure of local authorities, including the provincial security
council, the prosecutor, and the public prosecutor, to investigate
Milad's killing. "The officer who shot and killed him is still walking
free." >>

activists in Rojhilat Kurdistan call for a general strike on September
16, marking the second anniversary of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising.

the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)" uprising that sparked in
Iran following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called
<morality police>. Since the call, many organizations and movements have
released statements, expressing that they will join the strike.
"September 16 marks the anniversary of the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini
and the beginning of the uprising in which our loved ones and children
sacrificed their lives for victory," said the statement released by the
Kurdistan Mothers for Justice. "On the eve of the second anniversary, we
express our support to the call of Kurdish activists and call on all
