Pakhsan Azizi
Iranwire - August 19 , 2024 - by Roghayeh Rezaei
<<Pakhshan Azizi: Sentenced to Death for Assisting Women Targeted by
ISIS
The Third Investigation Branch of the Evin Prosecutor's Office has
opened a new case against Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner
who has already been sentenced to death. The new charges allege that
Azizi was involved in a prison <riot> related to the recent presidential
election. However, evidence obtained by IranWire indicates that Azizi,
who was sentenced to death by Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court,
is not a <rioter> or a <rebel.> Instead, Zeinab Bayazidi, a women's
rights activist and former political prisoner, asserts that Azizi's real
offense is her humanitarian work. Bayazidi, who has been friends with
Azizi for years, described her as a compassionate and gentle individual.
She believes the charges stem from Azizi's efforts to assist women
suffering from violence in Syrian Kurdistan during the ISIS crisis.
Pakhshan Azizi, a 39-year-old Kurdish women's rights activist from
Mahabad, has been deeply involved in advocating for gender justice. A
graduate in social work from Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran,
Azizi worked as a volunteer social worker before her arrest in August
2023 at her parents' home in Tehran's Kharrazi neighborhood. After
nearly a year in temporary detention, Azizi was sentenced to death and
four years in prison last month by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary
Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. She was charged with
<rebellion,> a broad term used to describe various forms of political
dissent and alleged armed resistance against the Islamic government.
Zeinab Bayazidi, a close friend of Azizi, disputes these charges. She
argues that Azizi, known for her gentle and sensitive nature, was never
involved in armed confrontations.
A source close to Azizi, who preferred to remain anonymous, told
IranWire that Azizi had written for the weekly newspaper *Pyam
Kurdistan* and worked under contract with Marivan welfare services in
the early 2010s. Bayazidi, now living in Germany after her own
imprisonment for civil activism, describes Azizi as someone who "was
always very lively and truly sought change." She adds, "She had ideas
that she could advance through various government bodies, like welfare,
but she was stymied at every turn." Bayazidi recounts that Azizi took
her to the welfare office to present her ideas, but they were often
<stolen> or altered beyond recognition. "She wanted to improve the
status of women through existing channels," she explains, "but they
would not let her." Bayazidi also described their joint research work on
issues such as children injured by landmines and women forced into
self-immolation due to domestic violence. She noted that Azizi was
involved with an NGO that, in 2007, legally researched and raised
awareness about female genital mutilation. This form of gender-based
violence is so significant that the United Nations has designated
February 6 as "Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation" Day.
Pakhshan Azizi faced repeated arrests due to her activism. In 2009, she
was detained during a student rally at Tehran University protesting the
execution of Ehsan Fatahian, a 27-year-old accused of being affiliated
with a Kurdish opposition group. After spending four months in temporary
detention, she was released on bail and subsequently received a
six-month suspended sentence. By 2013, Azizi had legally left Iran for
Iraqi Kurdistan. Recent charges against Azizi include her alleged
<presence in Syrian Kurdistan.> The accusation emerged from a letter she
sent from prison in June, in which she addressed her activities in the
region. Zeinab Bayazidi, a longtime friend of Azizi, explained her
motivation: "Women have always been concerned with making a change. When
she couldn't effect this change politically or was prevented from doing
so, Azizi crossed borders to where she was needed most - where the
suffering was high during the ISIS attacks. She believed that the fate
of all human beings is interconnected." The death sentence against Azizi
is linked to her involvement in Rojava, where Kurdish groups like the
People's Defense Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ),
supported by a range of international actors including the U.S., Russia,
and even the Assad government, fought against ISIS. Despite this,
sources confirm Azizi was not a member of the PKK or its Iranian branch,
PJAK. She clarified in her letter that her role was purely voluntary.
Bayazidi, who has received the Danielle Poe award for her human rights
advocacy, underscored that Azizi never engaged in armed activities. "Her
spirit is far from seeking weapons," she said. "Azizi is a singer and
musician deeply moved by human suffering. She once wept uncontrollably
upon hearing about the plight of Rojava's people." An informed source
highlighted a part of Azizi's letter, describing her volunteer work in
Rojava as "attractive and fulfilling," emphasizing her commitment to
aiding women and children affected by ISIS's brutality. The source told
IranWire that immediately after receiving her death sentence, Pakhshan
Azizi appeared at a volleyball game in high spirits, displaying
remarkable resilience despite the grim news. Zeinab Bayazidi said the
recent death sentences against Sharifa Mohammadi, a labor activist in
Rasht, and Verisheh Moradi, a Kurdish women's activist, are acts of
retaliation against women and workers.
Verisheh Moradi
She argues that these groups, critical of the Islamic Republic, are
being targeted in an attempt to suppress their voices. Bayazidi
emphasized that the prison letters of these women reveal their
commitment to justice and their strong spirits despite the harsh
conditions they face. In her letter, titled "Hiding the Truth and Its
Alternative," Azizi described the brutal treatment she endured during
interrogations. She wrote about being subjected to repeated physical
abuse, illustrating the severe psychological and physical toll of her
detention. Azizi advocated for increased public involvement in societal
issues as essential for social cohesion and crisis resolution, and she
expressed the belief that women's knowledge and activism are vital for
realizing democracy and freedom.
Sharifeh Mohammadi
Verisheh Moradi, who faces a potential death sentence and whose trial is
ongoing, protested the death sentences of Sharifeh Mohammadi and Azizi
by questioning the Islamic Republic's claim of combating ISIS. In a
statement released before her second court session, she denounced the
hypocrisy of the regime's actions.>>
