Forced hijab in Iran
Iranwire - August 7, 2024
<<Video of Iran's Morality Police Beating Teen Girls Sparks Outrage
A viral video of Iran's Morality Police beating two teenage girls for
not wearing headscarves in Tehran has sparked widespread outrage on
social media. The incident has reignited calls for President Masoud
Pezeshkian to fulfill his campaign promises to disband the controversial
morality police.
The video, released on Tuesday, shows officers from the <Noor> plan
confronting two teenage girls on Vatanpour Street in northern Tehran.
The <Noor> plan was started earlier this year to enforce hijab
regulations. The footage shows police officers beating and detaining the
girls, who were not wearing headscarves known as the hijab. The mother
of Nafas Haji Sharif, a 14-year-old victim, told Ensaf News website that
her daughter's head hit an electric pole during the arrest, after which
the altercation continued inside the police van. Despite filing a
complaint, she says her efforts to seek justice have been largely
unsuccessful, though a military prosecutor has granted her access to
CCTV footage of the incident. Describing her daughter's condition after
the arrest, the mother said she found the teenager with facial injuries,
swollen lips, a bruised neck, torn clothing, and difficulty in speaking.
On Wednesday, Tehran's Police Force Information Center responded to the
video, claiming it was recorded on June 21. The police's statement
alleged that the girls were warned about <inappropriate clothing,> and
they responded with obscenities. The center acknowledged that the
officers' conduct was <not within the framework of its standards> and
said the judiciary and the force's internal inspection unit were
investigating the case. The incident has reignited debate over Iran's
strict dress code laws and enforcement methods. Many Persian-speaking
social media users have expressed anger and dismay over the treatment of
the teenagers, with many calling on President Masoud Pezeshkian to honor
his campaign pledges to end such confrontations. During his presidential
campaign, Pezeshkian repeatedly criticized the Morality Police and its
treatment of Iranian women and girls for not adhering to mandatory hijab
laws. Since April 13, Iran's law enforcement agencies have intensified
the enforcement of hijab regulations under the national action plan <Noor.>
Across Iran, there have been numerous reports of women being arrested
and subjected to the use of force due to perceived violations of dress
codes. Users across social networks are participating in a spontaneous
campaign using the hashtag "war against women" to document their
experiences and observations regarding the government's crackdown on the
opponents of mandatory hijab.>>

<<Executed Protester Reza Rasaei Buried Under Tight Security
Reza Rasaei, a follower of the Yarsan religion and a detainee from the
2022 protests, was executed on Tuesday and subsequently buried under
stringent security measures. IranWire reports that security agents
prevented Rasaei's body from being buried in the Yarasan people's
cemetery.
Authorities instructed the Rasai family that they could not bury him in
Sahneh, his hometown, but instead had to lay him to rest along a remote
road.
Rasaei was executed at dawn on August 6, at Dizel Abad Prison in
Kermanshah. Just an hour after his execution, his body was buried on the
outskirts of Kermanshah, far from Sahneh, in a ceremony attended only by
close family members, including his mother. Security forces restricted
access to the burial site, preventing others from attending and saying
their final goodbyes. Sources also indicate that Rasaei was denied a
final meeting with his family. Fatemeh Heydari, a member of the families
of victims from the 2022 protests, tweeted that security officers sealed
off Reza Rasai's father's house at 2 a.m., and the family was informed
of his execution only later that morning. Civil activist Ebrahimullah
Bakhshi highlighted the oppressive conditions faced by Rasaei's family
leading up to the execution. Bakhshi reported on X that security agents
had raided a relative's workplace a month prior, seizing electronic
equipment and intensifying pressure on the family. The restrictions
included limited personal visits, restricted phone calls, and
intimidation of those around Rasai. Rasaei was the 10th individual
executed in connection with the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests. Before
Rasaei's execution, death sentences had been carried out for Mohsen
Shekari, Majidreza Rahnavard, Mohammad Hosseini, Mohammad Mehdi Karmi,
Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaqoubi, Saleh Mirhashmi, Milad Zohrehvand, and
Mohammad Qobadloo. Rasaei's execution follows a rapid legal process that
has raised serious concerns about due process. Mohammad Rasool Haqnajati,
head of the second branch of the Criminal Court of Kermanshah, issued
the death sentence in October 2023. On December 31, 2023, he forwarded
Rasaei's case to the Execution of Sentences Department of Kermanshah
province, two weeks after Iran's Supreme Court had approved the
sentence. Rasai was sentenced to death for the alleged murder of Nader
Bairami, the IRGC's intelligence chief in Sahneh City. However, human
rights organizations have highlighted significant issues with the case.
The sentence was reportedly issued under pressure from the head of the
judiciary despite a lack of evidence to prove the crime. Rasaei's
conviction was based on confessions that human rights advocates claim
were obtained through torture and fabrication over several months. No
concrete evidence has been presented to support the charges against
him.>>

<<UN Report: Iran's Crackdown Hit Protesters and Minorities Hard
The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on
Iran has released a new report detailing the severe and disproportionate
impact of the Iranian government's crackdown on protesters since 2022,
with a focus on its effects on ethnic and religious minorities.
According to the report, ethnic and religious minorities, particularly
Kurd and Baluch communities, have borne the brunt of the government's
response to the protests. The Mission states that "the impact of the
protests on minorities cannot be overstated," noting that the social
fabric of these communities has been significantly damaged. The paper
highlights the unique challenges faced by women from minority groups,
who experience "distinct harms" compounded by pre-existing
discrimination based on both their gender and minority status.
Furthermore, the report warns of transgenerational impacts on children,
with potential consequences that may persist for decades. The
Fact-Finding Mission observed that ethnic and religious minorities
demonstrated the highest and most prolonged participation in the protest
movement, extending well into 2023.
Jina Amini
The 2022 "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in Iran erupted following the
death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died in police
custody after being arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly.
Starting in September of the year, the demonstrations rapidly spread
across the country, evolving into the most significant challenge to the
Islamic Republic's rule in decades. Protesters, led predominantly by
women and youth, demanded fundamental rights, an end to mandatory hijab
laws, and broader social and political reforms.>>

Execution of Reza Rasaei Ignites Protests in Evin Womens Ward
NCRI - Womens committee - 6 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Execution of Political Prisoner Reza Rasaei Ignites Protests in Evin
Women's Ward
Female political prisoners in the women’s ward of Evin Prison protested
the execution of Reza Rasaei. The prison guards raided the women's ward
and brutally beat the political prisoners, resulting in injuries to some
inmates. One prisoner's condition is concerning. As of the evening of
Tuesday, August 6, 2024, the situation in the women's ward of Evin
Prison remains tense.
Midday Protest and Sloganeering
Around noon on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, female political prisoners in
Evin Prison protested the execution of political prisoner Reza Rasaei by
chanting slogans. Earlier that morning, Reza Rasaei was executed in
Dieselabad Prison, Kermanshah. Reza Rasaei was a 34-year-old Kurdish
citizen and follower of the Yarsan faith from Sahneh in Kermanshah
province who had been arrested and detained during the 2022 nationwide
Iran uprising.
Coordinated Protests and Hunger Strike Campaign
The protest by the female political prisoners in Evin coincided with the
"Tuesdays Against Execution" campaign and a hunger strike by prisoners
in 18 prisons nationwide. They chanted slogans such as "Death to the
Dictator" and "Death to the Executioner Regime" against the death
penalty.
Escalation and Guard Violence
During their protest, the female political prisoners broke the door to
the ward's guard office. Following this, several security guards were
dispatched to suppress the prisoners, leading to a clash between the
inmates and the guards. Several female political prisoners were injured
and taken to the prison infirmary, though their names and numbers are
not known.
Formation of a Security Committee
Additional reports indicate that a security committee has been formed in
the prison, with the possibility of punitive transfers or exile of some
prisoners to other locations. All telephone contacts between female
political prisoners and the outside world have been cut off, and they
are not even allowed to contact their families.>>

News Center-The Baloch Activists Campaign, a human rights organization
that documents violations of the Baloch minority rights in Iran, has
announced on Tuesday that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
forces opened fire on a car in the city of Khash, killing and injuring
five Baloch citizens from the same family. According to the campaign
group, a five-year-old child, a man and a woman, and an eight-year-old

<<Iran reduces jail term of Grammy-winning protest singer
Tehran (AFP) - An Iranian appeals court has halved the prison sentence
handed down against pop star Shervin Hajipour, whose song became the
anthem of nationwide protests in 2022, the judiciary said Tuesday.
Hajipour, 27, is known for his song "Baraye" which became popular during
mass demonstrations triggered by the September 2022 death in custody of
Mahsa Amini.
Jina Amini
Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, had been arrested for an alleged
breach of the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women. In March,
the pop star said he had been sentenced to three years in prison for
<inciting and provoking people to riot to disturb national security>.
He was also sentenced to eight months for "propaganda against the
regime", he said on his Instagram page.
Under Iranian law, jail sentences run concurrently. On Tuesday, the
judiciary's Mizan website said an appeals court had cut Hajipour's
sentence, reducing it to around 18 months. "Baraye", (Persian for
Because), is composed of tweets about the protests and highlights
longings people have for things lacking in the Islamic republic. The
song was played at a White House celebration for the Persian New Year in
March 2023. A month earlier, US First Lady Jill Biden presented Hajipour
with the Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change. Biden called "Baraye"
a "powerful and poetic call for freedom and women's rights" in Iran,
where covering the neck and hair has been compulsory for women since a
few years after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
Hajipour was briefly arrested during the protests.

Reza Rasai
Remembering
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 6 August 2024
<<Political Prisoner and Yarsan Adherent Reza Rasai Secretly Executed
Reza (Gholamreza) Rasai, a Kurdish political prisoner and follower of
the Yarsan religion, who was arrested during the "Woman, Life, Freedom"
movement, was secretly executed in Dizel Abad Prison, Kermanshah.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, Rasai's execution took place in the early hours of Tuesday,
August 6, 2024, in Kermanshah Central Prison (Dizel Abad). Rasai, a
34-year-old from Sahneh city in Kermanshah province, was executed
without prior notification to his family. An informed source revealed
that security agencies informed Rasai's family about the execution only
this morning. They were also warned that they are not permitted to bury
him in his hometown of Sahneh. On Sunday, December 31, 2023, Rasai's
case was forwarded to the Execution of Sentences Department of
Kermanshah province by Mohammad Rasool Haqnajati, the head of the second
branch of the Criminal Court of Kermanshah, who had issued the death
sentence. The Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran had approved
the death sentence two weeks prior. In October of the previous year,
Rasai was sentenced to death by the second branch of the Criminal Court
of Kermanshah province for the murder of Nader Bairami, Nader Bairami,
the IRGC's intelligence chief in Sahneh City. This sentence was issued
under pressure from the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of
Iran, despite the lack of evidence and documentation to prove the crime.
It is important to note that Rasai's sentence was based on forced
confessions obtained after months of torture and case fabrication. No
proof documents have been presented in this case. On Friday, November
24, 2022, Rasai was arrested by government forces in Karaj city.
Following his interrogation, he was transferred to Dizel Abad Prison in
Kermanshah.>>
