Women confined to home
Jinha - Womens News Agency - June 12 , 2024 - by SUHA EL-ALI
<<Women confined to home by 'morality police' in occupied Idlib
The <morality police> formed by the Syrian Salvation Government of the
Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Idlib aim to remove women from social
life and the public sphere.
Idlib- Women are subjected to more rights violations in Idlib occupied
by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The
Syrian Salvation Government supported by the HTS passed a <Public
Morality> draft law aiming to eliminate the fundamental rights of women.
As part of the law, the <morality police> was formed to confine women to
home. Many women are detained and tortured by morality police in the
occupied Idlib. NuJINHA spoke to women in Idlib about the inhuman
practices of the morality police.
She is confined to the home
<They turn my life upside down,> said Islam al-Rawas, a 24-year-old
university student. She was arrested by the HTS members because she was
seen in the city with one of her teachers (a man who is not her
relative). After being held in detention for five days, she was
released. Since then, her family and relatives have not allowed her to
go out. Islam Al-Rawas told us that her family and relatives had forced
her to leave the university while she was about to graduate from
university due to this incident. She described the incident as tragic
caused by <traditions and customs that confine women to the home and
monitor all movements and behaviors of women. The morality police was
formed by the HTS to limit women's freedom and prevent women from
education and working by using psychological and physical violence.>
The <morality police> draft law passed by the Syrian Salvation
Government in occupied Idlib obligates girls over the age of 12 to cover
their hair, banning women and men from working together in the workplace
and hookah and imposing a ban on music at wedding ceremonies, cafés and
public markets. The women of Idlib think that the draft law passed by
the HTS's government aims to limit women's freedom and prevent women's
participation in social life more.
She was detained
Randa Al-Soko is a 25-year-old displaced woman living in Idlib. She was
once detained by morality police for not complying with the dress code
imposed on women. <After 48 hours of detention, I was asked to pay $200
for my release. I was subjected to insults and violence by the morality
police. I still suffer from psychological problems and trauma.>
Randa Al-Soko thinks that the <morality police> formed by the government
aim to limit women's freedom and rights by ordering what women should
wear and how they should live.
'Women should raise their voices against these practices'
Rawan Al-Alou, a human rights activist, carries out activities to
empower women in Idlib. <Women should object to the new unit called
morality police by using legal procedures,> she said, stressing that
women are subjected to more rights violations by the HTS. <Women's
rights defenders must struggle against the rights violations. They
should raise their voices against these practices.> >>

<<'Women will send the trustee back'
<It is not the time to sit at home; it is the time to defend our will,>
said the women participating in the <democracy march> launched to
protest the removal of the elected mayor of Hakkari.
Colemerg (Hakkari)- On June 3, Mehmet Sıddık Akış, the elected Co-mayor
of Colemerg (Hakkari), was detained, removed from office and replaced
with a trustee. On June 10, the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party
(DEM Party) launched a three-day <democracy march> to protest the
removal of its elected mayor of Hakkari. The march started in Şemzinan (Şemdinli)
district of Hakkari and continued in Gever (Yuksekova) and it will
continue in Çele (Çukurca) today. After the march, a rally will be
organized in the city center of Hakkari on June 13 to say <No to the
trustee>. <It is the time to say no,> said the women participating in
the march, calling on the people of Hakkari to defend their will.
'We should not sit at home if we want to stop the attack'
Amine Engudar, one of the mothers participating in the march since the
first day, calls on the people of Hakkari to <defend your will and
struggle. This march was launched to protest the appointment of the
trustee. We condemn the appointment of the trustee to our municipality.
We elected our mayor with our free will; however, our mayor was replaced
with a state-appointed trustee. We do not recognize the appointed
trustee. We will keep resisting even if it takes months. We should not
sit at home anymore if we want to stop the attack on our will. Everyone
should take to the streets to say 'no' to the appointment of the
trustee. The people of Colemerg should take to the streets to defend
their own will. This issue is not just an issue for the Kurds, it is an
issue for everyone. We will resist until we retake our municipality.
Despite everything, we will stand by our people.>
'We do not accept this betrayal and insult'
Saadet Dogma also said that they would keep resisting until they retook
their municipality. She called on everyone not to <sit at home and wait
for the appointment of trustees to other municipalities. We do not want
trustees in Kurdistan and we do not accept the appointment of the
trustee to our municipality. The appointment of the trustee to our
municipality is a betrayal. They (the government) try to save themselves
by causing chaos everywhere but we do not accept it. We do not accept
this betrayal and insult. We will resist to the end. We will always
defend our will.>
'People of all ages should defend their will'
Şadiye Kırmızıgul, Co-mayor of the municipality in Gever, also called on
all Kurdish people to <defend your will by participating in the rally on
June 13. The Kurdish people have been taking to the streets to protest
the removal of their elected mayor. We launched a march and we will hold
a rally after the march. This trustee policy is no longer acceptable.
The removal of the elected mayor is a kind of oppression and injustice.
I call on the people of all ages in Colemêrg to take to the streets and
raise their voices against the appointment of the trustee to their
municipality. It is time to say 'no' to this policy.> >>

Heseke (Hasakah)- Kongra Star Education Committee has organized
education workshops for displaced women living in Washokani camp located

Education is important for women, said Nur Xazi Osman, member of Kongra
Star Education Committee, speaking about the aim of the education

also organize their society because they are because women are the

<<Women build common life in Jinwar
Women living in Jinwar, an all-women village, work together to build a
common life. The village is the place that they always dreamed of living
in.
Dirbesiye - Jinwar, the first all-women village in Kurdistan and in the
Middle East, is located in the western part of the Dirbêsiyê (Dirbasiyah),
Jazira Canton of North and East Syria. The project of the village was
developed at the end of 2016. Its construction started on March 10, 2017
and was completed in 2018. The village was opened on November 25, 2018,
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The
village, beautified by women, is also a shelter where women feel safe.
Education is an important part of daily life
In the village, there are 30 houses, a school, a communal dining hall, a
shop and a Şîfa Jin (Women's Clinic) and women learn a living from
agriculture and animal husbandry. Women living in the village also
ensure the security of the village. Education is an important part of
daily life in the village. Women come together at the school to learn
how to read and write and other information. They use solar panels to
generate electricity.
'We work together'
As a NuJINHA team, we went to the village and spent a night there. As
dawn rises, we saw women ensuring the security of the village. Delal
Heci Omer, a Yazidi woman from Hasakah, welcomed us with a cup of coffee
she brewed over an open fire. She has lived in the village with her
three daughters for five years. <As the women of the village, we always
work together. I am a Yazidi woman living with Muslim women. I feel like
they are my relatives. All women in the village celebrate Yazidi
holidays with me,> she told us. Delal Heci Omer spoke about the communal
life in the village. <After preparing breakfast for children and sending
them to the school, all the women in the village start doing the work
that needs to be done together. Sometimes, we have guests. We cook and
serve meals to the guests together.>
She settled in Jinwar with her three daughters after her divorce
When Delal Heci Omer wanted to live in the village, her family did not
allow her. <My family did not allow me to come here because I am a
Yazidi. I was told, 'There is a Yazidi village, go there'. My family did
not accept a Yazidi woman to live with women of different religions. My
living conditions deteriorated after I got divorced. I have three
daughters but my family did not support me. I told my family 'You did
not help a Yazidi woman' and decided to come to Jinwar village. My
daughters also like the village. They feel happy here.> Calling on all
Yazidi women to believe in themselves without fear, Delal Heci Omer
said, <People can practice their faith wherever they are. If they do not
believe in themselves, they will never become strong. Women should
believe in themselves to be strong. The door of the village is open to
every woman.>
She visited the village but decided to live there
Yasmin Ehlam Ehmed is a woman of Afrin, ensuring the security of the
village. She has been living in the village for about three years.
<While I was living in Aleppo, I heard that there was an all-women
village in Dirbesiye. Then I got curious and wanted to see it. I decided
to visit the village and stayed here for two months. I decided to live
here forever after spending a month here. The village is the place that
I always dreamed of living in. This place is better for the development
of myself and my daughter.>
They plan everything together
Yasmin Ehlam Ehmed has a son and a daughter. Her son lives with his
father in Aleppo. <In the morning, we send our children to school. In
the village, we plan everything together and work together. We bake
bread at the bakery together. We plant vegetables and harvest them
together. We do the housework together. I am in charge of ensuring
security of the village. We protect each other.>
The door of Jinwar is open for all women
The people who visit the village are very impressed by the communal life
built by women, Yasmin Ehlam Ehmed told us. <I feel happy whenever I see
women live with their daughters here. I feel more self-confidence here.
The door of Jinwar is open for all women. The village is the place for
all women who do not know where to go and want to improve and educate
themselves.> >>

Semira Eli
Jinha - Womens News Agency - June 11 , 2024 - by BERÇEM CUDI
<<'Trustee will be defeated by the will of women and youth'
Trustee appointed to the municipality in Colemêrg (Hakkari) will be
defeated by the will of women and youth, Semira Eli, director of Mala
Jin in the Euphrates Canton, stressed, saying, <People of all ages
shield for their municipality.>
Kobane- On June 3, Mehmet Sıddık Akış, the elected Co-mayor of Colemerg
(Hakkari), was detained, removed from office and replaced with a
trustee. He was then sentenced to 19 years and six months in prison on
charges of <leading an illegal organization>. Since June 3, people have
taken to the streets in many Kurdish cities to protest the coup against
the will of people in Colemerg.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Semira Eli, director of Mala Jin (Women's
House) in the Euphrates Canton evaluated the AKP's usurpation policies
against the gains of the Kurdish people.
'The AKP violates all laws'
The AKP aims to destroy the will of people, Semira Eli said. <The
Turkish state, especially the AKP, always carries out inhuman practices
against the people of Turkiye and Kurdistan. This is the AKP's history
full of occupation, oppression, plunder, destruction and torture. The
AKP uses laws according to its interests. The people and politicians
were given high prison terms for supporting the resistance in Kobane.
The whole world thinks that the fight against ISIS is a humanitarian
duty; the AKP calls the trial against the politicians a 'terrorism'
trial. This reveals that Erdogan supports terrorism.>
Speaking about the replacement of the elected mayor of Colemerg with a
state-appointed trustee, she said, <The appointment of trustees to the
municipalities of people once again shows the plundered mentality and
oppression of the invaders. The people elected their mayor with their
will but the AKP ignored the will of the people. It is obvious that it
is determined to carry out its invasion and destruction. The AKP removed
the elected mayor of Colemerg and appointed a trustee to the
municipality because Colemerg is a strategic place for the AKP aiming at
continuing its corruption and plunder by depriving the people of
services.>
'The gains of the Kurdish people are targeted everywhere'
The Turkish government also threatened municipal elections to be held in
North and East Syria. <The Turkish government follow the same policies
against the municipal elections to be held in North and East Syria,>
Semira Eli said, adding, <When the Autonomous Administration of North
and East Syria (AANES) announced that municipal elections would be held
in northeastern Syria, the Turkish state began to attack the region. The
municipal elections are a must to provide services to the local people.
However, the Turkish state did not accept the elections and began to
threaten and attack the region. The Turkish state does not want the
Kurdish people to have status, rights and system.>
'The will of our people will bring success'
At the end of her speech, Semira Eli saluted the resistance of the
people in Colemerg and said, <The people know what they want. Therefore,
the people of Colemerg immediately took a stand against the appointment
of the trustee. The AKP wants to control everything but the people do
not want it. Women and young people lead the protests against the
state-appointed trustee. The state-appointed trustee will be defeated by
the will of women and youth. People of all ages shield for their
municipality. We believe that Erdoğan will be defeated and the people
will win a victory in Colemerg.> >>

They attack peace
Jinha - Womens News Agency - June 11 , 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<'They attack as long as we say peace'
<They attack as long as we say peace. We will not bow to these
policies,> said the relatives of prisoners, who recently went to Ankara
in order to voice their demands.
Colemerg (Hakkari)- A hunger strike was started by political prisoners
across Turkey on November 27, 2023 to demand <freedom for Abdullah
Ocalan and a resolution to the Kurdish question>. After the hunger
strike that lasted three months, the political prisoners started a new
action by refusing the visits by their lawyers and family members on
April 4. Since then the political prisoners have refused the visits by
their lawyers. The <Be the voice freedom> protest started by their
relatives to draw attention to the isolation and resistance in prisons
continues. The relatives of prisoners stress that the aggravated
isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan in the prison island
of Imrali has spread to all facets of life and emphasize that they will
resist such policies to the end. In the past few days, the relatives of
political prisoners went to Ankara, requesting to meet the Minister of
Justice; however, they received no response to their request. Describing
the process by saying, <There is no justice or law in this country,> the
mothers of Gever (Yuksekova) call all Kurdish people to <raise your
voices against the usurpation of rights and freedoms.>
'War policies bring no solution'
<The ruling party has declared a war against the Kurdish people,> Kıymet
Dogma said, stressing that the Kurdish people are determined to demand
peace. <We will keep struggling against the war policies. We struggle to
stop more blood from being shed. All political prisoners must be
immediately released. The mothers went to Ankara to voice their demands;
however, they could not meet the minister. We have received no
information from our children. All mothers should support the prisoners.
We want to hear the voices of our children. We always stand by our
children. Erdoğan wants to shed more blood but we want to stop it. For
months, we have not known the conditions of prisoners. This is a form of
torture. We will resist to the end. We do not accept torture and we will
never remain silent against it. As mothers, we will always take to the
streets to voice the demands of our children.>
'We take steps for a solution'
Nurten Sancak, member of Peace Mothers Initiative, is one of the
mothers, who went to Ankara. Indicating that they went to Ankara in
order to demand peace and a solution to the Kurdish question, she said,
<We went to Ankara for political prisoners. As mothers, we demand the
end of this torture. We demand peace with dignity. The end of this
isolation and this torture will bring a solution. Every day, the homes
of families are raided and young people are detained. All we demand is
our rights. We demand a free life and we will demand them to the end.
Many mothers died of heart attacks while demanding peace. We do not
accept such policies. We take steps for a solution.>
'We will not bow to these policies'
Mısirhan Çuruh said that they would never remain silent and they would
always struggle. <We went to Ankara not just for ourselves but also for
all people. We demanded peace and the end of all kinds of oppression.
However, we received no response to our demands. They have done the same
thing for years. They have no justice or law. They do not want to hear
us or the prisoners. Despite everything, we will keep struggling. Yes,
we demand peace and justice and we will not bow to these policies. We
went from Gever (Yuksekova) to there (Ankara) to stop this bloodshed.
They claim that the Kurdish people want a war but they are the ones who
really want a war. They prohibit our language, our rights and our will.
There is nothing to say to this state. They carry out unjust practices
to do what they want. We waited there for hours. We will never bow down
by standing by our children.> >>
