<<Little Progress: Women Granted Access to Tehran Stadium
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has trumpeted that his policy of
engagement with the Islamic Republic of Iran over the discriminatory
treatment of women in football is bearing fruit after a small group were
allowed into the Tehran derby this week. Around 3,000 women were granted
access to Azadi Stadium on December 14 to attend the Iran Pro League
match with nearly 60,000 men, after Infantino met in September with
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in New York to discuss <progress made
regarding the presence of women in football stadiums.> <It was,
therefore, with great delight that I learned around 3,000 women attended
the Tehran derby between Persepolis FC and Esteghlal FC today. Thanks to
the ongoing dialogue between FIFA and the Islamic Republic of Iran
Football Federation, progress is being made,> the head of football's
world governing body said in a statement issued on the social media
platform X. For more than four decades, Iran's clerical establishment
has opposed the idea of women being allowed in stadiums with male fans,
and only a restricted number of them have been allowed to attend a few
games in recent years. There has been minimal progress on the issue
since calls were made on FIFA last year to ban Iran from the World Cup
in Qatar because of the continued exclusion of women from football
matches. The calls came against the backdrop of women-led nationwide
protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while she was
in police custody for allegedly wearing her mandatory headscarf
improperly. The testimony of a young Iranian woman who sought to attend
the Tehran derby this week highlights the challenges faced by women who
wish to attend men's sport events. She said she had witnessed several
women being denied entry to the stadium despite having valid tickets.
<They were told that the seats were full and to go home,> the woman
said. <Their tone was harsh. One of the officers even shouted, 'Either
you leave or we'll take you away.'> The witness herself, who asked to
remain anonymous, tried to purchase tickets online shortly after they
went on sale, but a message stated that the stand was already full.
<Tickets were being sold on the black market for between 2 and 5 million
tomans ($40 - $100),> she said. <My sister and I decided to go to the
stadium in person to see if we could get tickets.> In 2019, a football
fan named Sahar Khodayari died after setting herself on fire over fears
that she would be jailed for trying to attend a match while wearing a
disguise. Infantino said he would be traveling to Iran <in the near
future to further discuss football-related matters> <Iran is a
significant force in Asian football and it is important that we continue
to nurture the positive and fruitful working relationship we have
built,> he added.>>

<<Jailed Baha'i and War Veteran Denied Basic Needs in Prison
Behrouz Farzandi, 57, a former prisoner of war during the 1980-88
Iran-Iraq War and a member of the persecuted Baha'i religious minority
who is currently in jail, has been barred from shopping at the prison
store for over 60 days and thus unable to obtain basic and essential
items for his daily needs. Access to the store is managed through a
shopping card - which prison authorities have withheld from Farzandi.
The shopping card, typically issued for up to three days by the relevant
bank, has been withheld from Farzandi despite multiple requests by him
and his family over the past two months. This arbitrary denial of access
to basic necessities poses a serious threat to Farzandi's health,
-particularly considering the heart and digestive ailments he developed
during his captivity during Iran's war with Iraq. Prolonged deprivation
of proper nutrition and other essential items could have irreparable
consequences for his well-being. In November 2021, Branch 1 of the
Shiraz Revolutionary Court sentenced Farzandi to seven months and 16
days in prison on the charge of <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic> and to 31 months and 16 days in prison for the charge of being
a <member of anti-government groups.> The original verdict was upheld by
the appeals court. Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the
harshest punishment - 31 months and 16 days in prison - is applicable.
On March 7, 2022, Farzandi was again summoned to the Revolutionary
Court, and was arrested begin serving his prison sentence and was
transferred to Adel Abad Prison in Shiraz. Farzandi was sent on medical
leave after four months of imprisonment due to heart problems. During
his leave, he underwent surgery at Kowsar Hospital of Shiraz to repair
95 percent blockages in his heart. Baha'is are routinely denied their
fundamental rights to freedom of religion or belief. They face
systematic persecution in all areas of life, including arbitrary arrests
and imprisonments, home searches and property confiscations, access to
education and livelihoods, as well as official hate speech in Iranian
media, and even the right to proper burials.>>

Armita Pavir
Iranwire - 15 Dec 2023
<<Tabriz Activist Sentenced to Nearly Two Years in Prison
An Iranian court has sentenced Armita Pavir, an activist incarcerated in
the northwestern city of Tabriz, to a total of 22 months and 17 days in
prison, IranWire has learned. The Azershahr Revolutionary Court issued
the sentence after convicting Pavir of <propaganda against the system>
and <insulting> the Islamic Republic's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Under the Islamic Penal Code, 15 months and one day of the sentence will
be enforceable if the sentence is upheld on appeal. Pavir was first
detained during protests in Tabriz on October 31 last year. Before that,
she was expelled from Tabriz's Azerbaijan Civil University for her
student activism. The activist ran a Telegram channel where he shared
her daily experiences and emphasized the need to keep up the resistance
against the Islamic Republic to bring changes in her country. Her latest
arrest occurred on September 13. Security agents have retained her
mobile phone and electronic devices and pressured her to sign a letter
of apology to justify her arrest. The judiciary claimed to have arrested
her for <financial> reasons, citing a debt she allegedly owed the
university for running a cafe at Tabriz Madani University. However, an
informed source has told IranWire that this was merely a pretext, as she
remained incarcerated despite having paid the debt and damages. In an
audio file received by IranWire, Pavir said she had launched her hunger
strike on November 12, the second since her arrest, in protest of her
incarceration.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Elnaz Mohammadi <Forced to Resign>
Iranian journalist Elnaz Mohammadi says she was forced to resign from
Hammihan newspaper a month ago. <I was forced to leave the social group
[desk] that we formed with Elahe with great enthusiasm in July last
year,> Mohammadi wrote in a post on her Instagram on December 14. In
September, Elnaz Mohammadi received a three-year suspended prison
sentence for covering the monthslong <Woman, Life, Freedom> protests.
Her sister Elahe Mohammadi, who is also a journalist, is serving a
12-year prison sentence in Tehran's Evin prison. <There are many reasons
behind my resignation, but it's better that I don't say. I don't want to
reveal more than that,> Mohammadi said. Dozens of journalists were among
more than 10,000 people unlawfully detained following the eruption of
nationwide protests last year. Many journalists have been released on
bail while awaiting trial or have been issued summonses to serve
multi-year sentences. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on human
rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, has urged the Islamic Republic to <stop
the widespread persecution of human rights defenders and journalists.>
The Committee to Protect Journalists has said that the Iranian
authorities <must realize that jailing journalists and critical voices
won't help them in hiding Iran's difficult realities,> while Reporters
Without Borders accused the Islamic Republic of exacting its <revenge
against journalists who....have fulfilled their duties in serving the
public's right to news and information.> >>

Mahsa Yazdani and her son Mohammad Javad Zahedi
NCRI - Womens committee - 14 Dec 2023 - in Women's News
<<Mahsa Yazdani, the mother of slain protester, is summoned to serve 5
years in prison
Mahsa Yazdani was sentenced to 13 years in jail for seeking justice for
her slain son. Mahsa Yazdani was summoned, today, Thursday, December 14,
2023, to report to the Office of the Implementation of Verdicts within
three days to serve her five years of prison time for seeking justice
for her son. She has another son, only four years old. The First Branch
of the Revolutionary Court of Sari had handed down a 13-year sentence to
Mahsa Yazdani, the mother of a slain protester, Mohammad Javad Zahedi.
The first branch of the Revolutionary Court has sentenced Mahsa Yazdani
to two counts of five-year sentences for <insulting the sanctities> and
<provoking people against national security.> She is sentenced to two
years for insulting Ali Khamenei, and to one year in prison for
<activities against the Islamic Republic.> These make a total of 13
years. According to the clerical regime's punishment law, Mrs. Yazdani
would have to serve five years in prison. Branch 8 of the Revision Court
of Mazandaran Province upheld this verdict.
Security forces in Sari, the capital of Mazandaran Province, arrested
Mahsa Yazdani on August 22, 2023, before the anniversary of last year's
Iran protests. Mahsa Yazdani was temporarily released on 1.5 billion
Toman bail on October 12, 2023. Mohammad Javad Zahedi, 20, was shot and
killed from close range with a pellet gun by security forces on
September 22, 2022. The NCRI Women's Committee condemns the inhuman
sentences issued by the mullahs' regime for the families of slain
protesters who seek justice for them and calls on human rights advocates
and the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Iran and the United
Nations fact-finding mission to inquire about these cases and hold the
regime accountable.>>

<<11 Police Killed In Attack in Iran's Baluchistan - State TV
At least 11 Iranian police officers were killed in an overnight attack
on a police station in the restive southeastern province of Sistan and
Baluchistan, an official told state television. <In the terrorist attack
on the police headquarters in the town of Rask, 11 policemen were
killed, and others were wounded,> the deputy provincial governor,
Alireza Marhamati, said on December 15. A number of assailants were also
killed in ensuing clashes, the report said, adding that the attack was
claimed by the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice). The
impoverished province of Sistan and Baluchistan borders Afghanistan and
Pakistan. It is home to a Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million
people in a country where the population is predominantly Shia. Human
rights groups say the Baluch population and other minorities in Iran
face widespread discrimination in the judicial system and their everyday
lives, with the authorities curtailing their access to education,
employment, adequate housing and political office. Unrest in Sistan and
Baluchistan province has involved drugs-smuggling gangs, Baluch rebels
and Sunni extremists. The provincial capital, Zahedan, was the scene of
months-long deadly protests that erupted in September last year. Sistan
and Baluchistan has been the scene of similar attacks in the past,
including in July 23 when four police officers were killed while on
patrol. Two weeks earlier, two policemen and four assailants died in a
shootout claimed by the Jaish al-Adl group. And in May, state media
reported that five Iranian border guards were killed in clashes with <a
terrorist group that was seeking to infiltrate the country.> >>

The wanderer
Personal message from Gino d'Artali
*FireOur precious house Iran is set on fire by the mullahs' regime as they're
hunting now for and not only the women but all freedom, equality and
democracy loving people, and yes, mostly the brave women, but more and
more also the women's rights activists; the students and teachers; the
journalists; the artists; the Sunnis; the Baluchis; the Azeris; the
Basa'is; the Kurds; the Kolbars and soo many more people of all walks of
life, origins and beliefs. The mullahs' regime wants to burn them all or
bring them to the gallows to hang them unless they beg for mercy. But
the faithfull people to and of Iran will not do so because they believe
also in what, whom I call the mother of Iran, Narges Mohammadi, says:
"Victory is not easy, but it is certain"
And so do I, at the service of all good and rightfull people of Iran.
But yes, when doing my service 24/7 my heart is bleeding too when I
again and again realize how the mullahs' regime makes the people suffer.
But in realizing it it makes my strenght to continue what I do only
stronger and more determined and one day I'll march with the freedom,
equality and democracy loving people of Iran to the Azadi tower to help
raise the flag of Victory.
Long live a long and free Iran.*
