<<Atekeh Rajabi summoned to court after her prison sentence
upheld
News Center- Atekeh Rajabi, a teachers' union activist, has been
summoned by the 21st branch of the Criminal Court in Iran's Mashhad city
to serve her two-month prison sentence. Atekeh Rajabi was fired from her
job in 2022 after she refused to go to class in September and published
videos criticizing the government's <unjust treatment> against students
and teachers for demanding their rights be respected. She was arrested
on May 9 after leaving her home to take part in a protest in Mashhad.
She was sentenced to six months in prison on the charge of <propaganda
activities against state> by the 7th branch of Mashhad Revolutionary
Court. Her four-month prison sentence has been suspended for five years.>>

<<Iran’s Security Agencies Coerce Muslims to Denounce Jailed
Baha'i Women
Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and a prosecutor in Isfahan city
have coerced Muslim neighbors and friends of 10 jailed Baha'i women into
filing complaints against them, reports say. Several individuals
summoned in this context have been forced to file complaints against
these women, under pressure, threats and intimidation, according to
Radio Farda. Yeganeh Agahi, Negin Khademi, Arezo Sobhanian, Yeganeh
Roohbakhsh, Shana Shoghifar, Mojgan Shahrezaei, Neda Badakhsh, Bahareh
Lotfi and Neda Emadi were arrested on Monday, October 23. According to
sources, the arrests were carried out with a court order, and some of
the personal belongings of these citizens were also confiscated by
security agents. Several of these citizens have previously faced arrests
and other court orders. The Isfahan prosecutor has informed the families
of these women that their detention may last from <six months to one
year.> Baha'is have been systematically persecuted in Iran for 44 years
because of their faith and are often accused of being spies or opposed
to the Iranian government. The Baha'i International Community and other
spokespersons note that no evidence has ever been provided to
demonstrate these charges. The Iranian government has intensified its
crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on
spurious charges over the past year, as well as denying access to higher
education, livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying personal
properties.>>

<<Iranian Elementary Student Dies After School Camp Accident
An Iranian elementary school student has died from injuries
sustained during a school camp in the northeastern Caspian province of
Golestan, an accident that raised questions about the organizers'
adherence to weather warnings. The head of Motahari Hospital in Golestan
announced that Emad Shamloo passed away on the evening of November 23.
Rasool Salahi earlier said that Emad was receiving artificial
respiration with a ventilator. The incident unfolded in the city of
Minoodasht on November 20 when a falling tree injured two pupils and a
teacher. Emad was among the injured, and his health condition was
immediately recognised as critical. The camp had proceeded amid strong
winds despite weather warnings issued by the Golestan Meteorological
Department. The prosecutor's office in Minoodasht has summoned five
people for questioning as part of an investigation into the incident.
Those summoned include the head of the education department of
Minoodasht, two of his deputies, as well as the director and deputy
director of education at Shahed elementary school in Minoodasht.>>

<<RSF: Journalists in Iran <Deserve to Be Celebrated, Not
Imprisoned>
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has called for the release of two
journalists imprisoned in Iran, saying they are <paying, like many of
their colleagues in the country, the price of their duty to inform.>
Saeedeh Shafiei and Nasim Sultanbeigi were sentenced to three and a half
years in prison amid a crackdown on the media and dissent following a
popular uprising that erupted in September last year. Shafiei went to
Tehran's Evin prison to begin serving her sentence on November 19, while
Sultanbeigi joined her there two days later. The two journalists were
tried at a public hearing in early July and were convicted later that
month of colluding, participating in illegal gatherings and
disseminating anti-government propaganda.
Their convictions were upheld in September.
Besides receiving prison terms, Shafiei and Sultanbeigi were
banned from traveling abroad and joining any group or organization for
two years after their release. The pair had been released provisionally
in February after being arrested the previous month for covering the
monthslong nationwide protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody on September 16, 2022. <The Islamic Republic continues to exact
its revenge against journalists who....have fulfilled their duties in
serving the public's right to news and information,> Jonathan Dagher,
head of RSF's Middle East desk, said in a statement on November 23.
Shafiei and Sultanbeigi <are courageous reporters, like their ten
colleagues who are also being held for covering the protests. They
deserve to be celebrated, not imprisoned,> he added.>>

<<Iranian Authorities Criticized for <Unlawful> Detentions of
Azeri Activists
Nearly 200 Iranian activists, journalists, writers and former
political prisoners have condemned a recent wave of arrests and other
forms of pressure targeting Azeri civil society activists in the
country. In a joint statement, the 196 signatories urged the Iranian
judiciary and security institutions to put an end to the <unlawful
treatment> of ethnic Azeri activists. They said that these activists
have been subjected to unjustified prolonged detention and extensions of
temporary detention. While in custody, they have had their
communications with their families restricted. The signatories cited the
case of Morteza Noormohammadi Nadarli, who was remanded in custody
despite being granted bail. The statement also expressed alarm over the
fate of Roya Zakeri, a woman who was taken to a psychiatric hospital in
the northwestern city of Tabriz last month after a video of her yelling
<death to the dictator> went viral on social media. The collective of
activists posted their statement online, asking the public to add their
signatures. Many Azeri activists were arrested amid increased government
pressure on dissent and civil society ahead of the September 16
anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. Amini's death
sparked nationwide protests against the Iranian establishment which were
brutally put down by security forces. More than 500 people were killed
in the repression and over 20,000 were arrested, including many
journalists, human rights advocates and civil activists.>>

<<Iranian Man Jailed in Germany Over Poison Attack Plot
A German court has sentenced an Iranian man to four years in
prison followed by preventive detention for planning an attack with
deadly chemicals.
Dirk Kienitz, the presiding judge at the Dortmund regional court,
said in his verdict that the 26-year old defendant <was determined to
carry out a terrorist attack using toxic substances,> according to a
court statement. The man, who was identified by prosecutors only as J.J.
due to German privacy rules, was detained in the town of Castrop-Rauxel
in January along with his older brother, who was later released. Online
conversations with several people said to be close to the Islamic State
extremist group had alerted anti-terrorist investigators, the statement
said. It later emerged that the defendant had received instructions on
how to produce the potent toxins cyanide and ricin, and had started
gathering the necessary ingredients. However, the judge said in his
verdict that <the instructions were unusable.> Five years ago, German
police arrested a Tunisian man and his wife on suspicion of planning to
carry out a ricin attack in the name of the Islamic State. They were
later sentenced to 10 and eight years' imprisonment, respectively.>>
