<<Awareness-raising activities against gender-based violence in Hasakah Canton
Hasakah- Male-state violence against women continues to be devastating due to the policies of states that deepen and maintain inequality between men and women. Women in war and conflict zones are subjected to all forms of violence more. The Sara Organization to Combat Violence against Women has been holding awareness-raising activities in Hasakah Canton to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. NuJINHA spoke to Helima Mihemed, a member of the organization, about their activities.
'The system of male-state must be changed'
Speaking about the pre-revolutionary period in North and East Syria, she said, <The Syrian regime normalized femicide and implemented the policy of immunity for the perpetrators. These policies led to an increase in femicide cases. We can say that the regime itself killed women. To end femicide, the system of male-state must be first changed.>
'A society can be free when women are free'
Helima Mihemed thinks that a society, in which women are killed, will definitely collapse and disintegrate. <A society can be free when women are free. A society having free women is a society having history and identity. Women are the strongest pillars of our society,> she said. Helima Mihemed reported that five women were killed and four more women were driven to suicide in Hesekê Canton in 2023. <As the Sara Organization to Combat Violence against Women, we combat gender-based violence and organize awareness-raising activities to change the patriarchal mindset in society.>
'Women were seen as a threat'
Recalling that more than 10 women were attacked during the Rojava Revolution, she said, <The Rojava Revolution is a women’s revolution. The patriarchal system saw the women leading this revolution as a threat because the new system based on gender-equality and democracy is against the patriarchal system.>
'We have held 122 seminars until now'
Helima Mihemed also talked about their activities in Hasakah Canton. <We have distributed 2,000 leaflets and held 36 meetings. We have paid 531 visits to martyrs' families and organizations. We have held 122 seminars with the participation of 1,692 people. We have solved 92 cases, including four femicide, five suicides, and two suicide attempts. We have held five press conferences to raise awareness about violence against women. We will make more efforts to eliminate violence and build a free society.> The Sara Organization also provides awareness-raising courses to both women and men. <We attach importance to awareness-raising courses to eliminate gender-based violence. We have also launched a campaign to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.> >>

<<'We must organize against attacks'
Makhmour- Iştar Assembly, a women's organization carrying out activities and events for women since the Makhmour refugee camp was established, kicked off its activities on November 16 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with the motto, <We weave life with the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi>. In an interview with NuJINHA, Xurbet Işlek, coordinating member of the assembly, spoke about their activities.
'Kurdish women have been entering a new phase'
Xurbet Işlek started her speech by commemorating the women who died while fighting for freedom. <Mirabal sisters were brutally killed on November 25. Women all around the world keep struggling while Kurdish women have been entering a new phase. Although years have passed, the mentality of governments and hegemony is still the same. Women and children are the most affected in wars and conflicts.>
'Women must organize themselves in all facets of life'
Indicating that women are subjected to serious attacks, she said, <Despite the attacks, women struggle more. The governments are afraid of organized and strong women. Today, women are killed, attacked and subjected to violence in the name of love. At least a woman is killed every day. Not only Kurdish women, but women all over the world suffer from gender-based violence and attacks. Women must organize themselves against the attacks in all facets of life.>
Activities
Xurbet Işlek told us that the assembly planned a series of activities to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. <We kicked off our activities on November 16. We have held many seminars, workshops and other activities for students and young women until now. On November 25, we will hold a march in the camp.>
13th Conference of the assembly
Xurbet Işlek also talked about the 13th Conference of the assembly. <We held our 13th conference participated by 300 delegates with the motto 'Towards freedom with 'Jin Jiyan Azadi'>. Everyone in the camp attended our conference. Self-organization was one of the issues discussed at the conference. After a three-day discussion, we made our plan for the next two years. The conference was dedicated to all the martyrs of freedom, who sacrificed their lives for the Kurdish people and Kurdish women, including Martyrs Evin Goyi and Raperin Amed.> >>

Khadija Rebbah
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 23 Nov 2023 - by HANAN HARITE
<<'The patriarchal mindset in Morocco prevents women from participating in politics'
Morocco- Women's participation in politics is still far from equality all around the world. In Morocco, women are still deeply under-represented in government leadership. Although Moroccan women launch many campaigns to increase women's political participation in politics, the demanded level has not been reached yet. Speaking to NuJINHA, Khadija Rebbah, Moroccan human rights activist and one of the founders of the Democratic Association of Moroccan Women (Association Democratique de Femmes de Maroc, ADFM), pointed out that although women have achieved many gains in politics since 2002 Moroccan general elections, their demands have not been fully met.> <The proportion of women in the Chamber of Representatives increased to nearly 10.8 percent in 2002 after more than 20 years. The representation of women in the Moroccan Parliament increased from 20.5% in the previous parliament of 2016 to 24.3%. In 2021, the proportion reached a peak of 26 percent. There is an increase in women's political participation; however, it is insufficient.>
'Gender parity is a social demand'
Emphasizing the importance of achieving the principle of equality in leadership positions, Khadija Rebbah noted that equality is a must in Morocco. <Women's movements in Morocco demand gender parity in top political and corporate leadership positions. It is not only a demand of women's movements but also a social demand. Morocco needs the potential and capabilities of women and men. Everyone can work for effective and real development in Morocco.>
'The most important obstacle is the election law'
She also talked about the obstacles that prevent women from participating in politics. <The most important obstacle is the election law. The quota system reserves 90 seats for women in regional and local lists. The quota system does not give the possibility of achieving true parity in the House of Councillors. The political parties do not believe that women can win the elections. Women are shown as candidates in the places where they have no chance of winning.>
'Women were subjected to political violence'
Khadija Rebbah believes that despite the recent developments in Moroccan society, customs and traditions still exclude women from politics. <Despite the gains achieved on political, constitutional, institutional and rights issues, women are still excluded from politics due to gender stereotypes, customs, traditions and the patriarchal mindset in society. In 2021, women were subjected to political violence. Moroccan young women refuse to be just a number in politics; they want to be effective in politics.> >>

Siham Davut
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 23 Nov 2023 - by DIREN ENGIZEK
<<'Women have the power to solve all the problems in the Middle East'
Raqqa- As the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is approaching, NuJINHA spoke to Siham Davut, Secretary General of the Future Syria Party, about the Israel-Hamas war, the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions on North and East Syria and the struggle of women for freedom. Siham Davut commented on the chaos suffered by the Middle East, <This is the Third World War.> The 2003 invasion of Iraq started a new phase, Siham Davut said, <The war in Iraq changed many things. After the overthrow of the oppressive regime in Iraq, a war started across the Middle East. The Middle East entered a new phase with the start of clashes in Lebanon and Palestine and the Arab Spring in 2011.>
'This war is actually a world war'
The war of states and regional powers started in the Middle East and it has gradually deepened, Siham Davut said. <This war is actually a world war because many states have plans and projects about this war. For instance, the Iranian regime aims to shape the Middle East by establishing the Shiite Crescent while the Turkish state aims to revive the Ottoman Empire with the flag of Sunni Islam. 'The Greater Middle East' is a project of the UN and western countries. The capitalists, who rule the system in the world, have been going through a crisis and they create chaos in the Middle East to overcome this crisis.> Siham Davut thinks that the Russia-Ukraine war and the tension between China and Taiwan serves the economic interests of governments. <They want to open economic corridors from India to Israel and Europe, from Iran to Turkey and Europe. The attacks on North and East Syria and the Israel-Hamas war reveal this situation.>
'The Turkish attacks on Syria deepens the crisis'
<The people living in the Middle East are badly affected by these wars and conflicts. Kurds, Armenians, Circassians, Syriacs, Arabs and Turkmens suffer from these wars and conflicts. The people of Syria have suffered the most since 2011. The Turkish attacks on Syria deepens the crisis. Talks were held in Astana and Geneva. Meetings were held to redraft the Syrian Constitution. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 was adopted; however, it has not been implemented.>
'The people of NE Syria and Gaza experience the same thing'
Speaking about the silence of the international community and human rights organizations against the ongoing attacks on North and East Syria, she said, <The citizens of Syria are killed, women, especially in occupied areas are subjected to violence and rape. All these rights violations have been documented. The people of North and East Syria and Gaza experience the same thing.> Siham Davut criticized the ongoing discussions of the UN and human rights organizations about opening a humanitarian corridor for Palestinians although the people of Gaza are under Israel airstrike for 48 days. <The people of Gaza and Israel are sacrificed for the interests of international powers. We are against all forms of violence, killing and massacre. The right to life must be defended. We believe that all problems can be solved through diplomacy and dialogue. We believe that the Israel and Palestine problem can be solved through diplomacy. This problem can be solved under the umbrella of the UN.>
'The Jin, Jiyan, Azadi philosophy should be our lifestyle'
Siham Davut emphasized that women are the ones who pay the heaviest price in wars and conflicts. <The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is approaching. The Jin, Jiyan, Azadi philosophy should be the lifestyle for all women, especially women of North and East Syria. As women, we have the power to solve all the problems in the Middle East. Women have the power to eliminate gender-based violence if they unite. As the Future Syria Party, we want to build a democratic Syria. To build a democratic Syria, we will struggle more by chanting 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi'.> >>

Nermin Issa and Rasha Dergham
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 22 Nov 2023 - by ASMAA FATHI
<<'We can raise a generation contributing to the development of society'
Cairo- Egyptian psychological and trauma consultant Dr. Rasha Dergham thinks that the science of early childhood development does not attract social interest either in Egypt or other countries.
'Children learn by imitating adults'
Noting that each child is special, she said, <They learn by imitating adults. They learn discrimination and racism from adults. First teachers of children are their parents. Parents should raise their children to contribute to the development of society. Our education system should provide awareness-raising forums and lectures and psychological support to children for reform in society.>
Early childhood experiences affect children's views about women
Nermin Issa, member of the Association of the Egyptian Female Lawyers, thinks that there is a major problem about raising children in various parts of Egypt. <Men in key decision-making positions were once children. They learned many things from adults. Their early childhood experiences affected their thoughts and views about women.>
'Women want to live in a safer society'
Emphasizing that all women want is to live in a safer society without violence and discrimination, she said, <However, living in a safer society has become a dream for women because violent fathers impact children's social and emotional development.>
'We can raise a generation contributing to the development of society'
Nermin Issa added, <Schools and universities should provide psychological support to men. Awareness-raising activities must be carried out about the early childhood experiences. We can raise a generation contributing to the development of society and respecting women.> >>

Kawsar Hassan
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 21 Nov 2023 - by ŞIRIN SALIH
<<'Women can now report violence against them'
Sulaymaniyah- Kawsar Hassan, Head of the Women's Department of the Social Bureau in Sulaymaniyah, thinks all forms of violence against women are known thanks to media influence on public opinion. <Awareness-raising activities can end gender-based violence.> Kawsar Hassan pointed out that early and forced marriages are also one of the reasons for the increase in violence against women. <Families play an important role in combating violence against women and girls. If they teach their children to respect women’s rights, they can end violence against women. Parents should treat their sons and daughters equally. Girls should not feel that there is a discrimination against them,> she told NuJINHA.
'Women can now report violence against them'
Emphasizing that violence has many forms, Kawsar Hassan said, <In the past, women could not even ask for a divorce because of the tribal society. Today, tribes still exist; however, women are now more conscious and they can report violence against them.> In her speech, Kawsar Hassan also talked about psychological violence against women. <Physical violence against women are now recorded in the medical records. For this reason, men use psychological violence against women because they know that they will face prison sentence when they use physical violence. Now, many women are subjected to psychological violence.> Kawsar Hassan believes that awareness-raising activities can reduce violence against women.>>

Salsabil Al-Qalibi
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 21 Nov 2023 - by ZOUHOUR MECHERGUI
<<'Women in conflict zones need feminist solidarity'
Tunisia- In an interview with NuJINHA, Salsabil Al-Qalibi, Professor of Constitutional Law in Tunisia, said that Israel’s attacks on Gaza are war crimes and that Israel should stand trial in the International Criminal Court.
'People in Gaza are subjected to war crimes'
Salsabil Al-Qalibi indicated that women are most affected by the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Libya, Gaza, Afghanistan, Sudan and many other countries. <Israel targets women and children in Gaza. People in Gaza are subjected to war crimes every day. In the Gaza Strip, civilians are deliberately targeted and killed. We know that targeting civilians is prohibited by the law of war; however, Israel ignores the international law and conventions. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) dealt with war crimes that took place during the conflicts in the Balkans in the 1990s. The court tried and imprisoned Slobodan Milosevic, the former President of Yugoslavia. Today, the International Criminal Court is an independent judicial institution empowered to investigate and prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and the crime of aggression.>
'Israel does not fulfill its obligations'
The Geneva Conventions are the main pillars of protection for children during armed conflict. Israel ratified the Geneva Conventions on July 6, 1951. Speaking about the 4th Geneva Convention which concerns protected civilians in occupied territory, Salsabil Al-Qalibi said, <Israel does not fulfill its obligations by targeting civilians in Gaza.>
'The rights of Palestinian women have been ignored for 70 years'
Emphasizing that women and children are targeted in Gaza, she said, <This is a war crime. Today, a brutal war is waged against Palestinians resisting for their freedom. Civilians in Gaza are subjected to all kinds of armed attacks. The rights of Palestinian women have been ignored for more than 70 years.> Salsabil Al-Qalibi called on human rights organizations, NGOs, women's organizations and politicians to pressure governments so that crimes committed against women in conflict zones can be investigated and the perpetrators of these crimes stand trial in the international criminal court. <For instance, ISIS abducted and tortured women in Syria. An international criminal tribunal must be established for the prosecution of ISIS members. The silence against the crimes committed against Syrian and Libyan women led to the massacres in Gaza. The international community must take an urgent action against the tragedies that affect and target women in Syria, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan and Palestine. Women in conflict zones need feminist solidarity.> >>

Asli Paninli
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 21 Nov 2023 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Lawyer Asli Pasinli: We wage a war against gender-based violence
Amed- Women hold events, protests and activities to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Turkey's President Erdogan issued a decree to leave the Istanbul Convention and the decision was published in the Official Gazette on March 20, 2021. Recently, Turkey's Law No. 6284 to Protect Family and Prevent Violence against Women, Turkish Civil Code and the principle of <equality> in the Constitution have been discussed in the Turkish parliament. These misogynistic discussions, which reinforce discrimination and inequality against women's legal rights, started by the People's Alliance of the AKP-MHP government supported by the Free Cause Party (HUDA-PAR) and the New Welfare Party (YRP). In an interview with NuJINHA, Asli Pasinli, lawyer and president of the Women's State of Solidarity Association (DAKAH-DER) spoke about the attacks on women's gains and the policy of impunity implemented in crimes against women.
'Withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was the beginning of the process'
<We wage a war against gender-based violence and the attacks on women,> said Asli Pasinli, emphasizing that withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was the beginning of the attacks on women. <NGOs and women's movements protested the decision of withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention. Withdrawal from the convention was the beginning of the attacks not only on women's physical existence but also to their legal rights. Before this decision, the convention was first targeted by sects and certain religious groups. And then, Turkey withdrew from the convention.>
'The right to alimony has been targeted for a long time'
When the decision was made to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, women's organizations and movements took to the streets and warned about the changes that might happen in Turkey after the withdrawal. <They issued many statements about the threat against women's right to alimony, Law No. 6284 and the amendment of the articles in the constitution about women. Women's right to alimony has been targeted in Turkey for a long time. Recently, the New Welfare Party submitted a proposal to the parliament about an amendment concerning the right to alimony. Before the general elections, the party promised men that they would eliminate the right to alimony,> Asli Pasinli said. Speaking about the discussion on the amendments of the Constitution. <Two articles of the Constitution have been targeted. Causing a discrimination among women regarding the headscarf is one of them. Another is about the concept of family. The target group of these discussion is LGBTI+ individuals.> Asli Pasinli thinks that the recent discussions are a war against the rights of women and LGBTI+ individuals are attacked. <A war has been started against all gains of women in Turkey. Rana Al-Kasmo
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 20 Nov 2023 - by SIBELIA EL-IBRAHIM
<<'Women should believe in their ability and strength'
Manbij- Rana Al-Kasmo from Manbij began to study law at university in 2011. However, ISIS took control of the city in 2013 and did not allow women to study. <ISIS killed many lawyers and the situation in the city was deteriorating. The situation of women worsened,> she said.
'I could not move for three years'
In 2014, Rana Al-Kasmo was diagnosed with tuberculous lymphadenitis when Manbij was still controlled by ISIS. During that time, she went to Turkey with her family and then returned to Syria, Aleppo, in 2015. <My health condition was deteriorating due to the medications I was given. The wrong medications caused the nerves of the lower limbs to weaken. I could not move and spent three years in bed. My sister supported me to complete my education.>
She got a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education
When Rana Al-Kasmo tried to complete her education at the Faculty of Law, she was told that she could continue her education in another department because she had not attended the faculty for a long time. <I was told that I could get a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education at a university in Latakia. My sister came to the university with me every day. Since I could not walk, she carried me for a year until I graduated from the university.>
She studies law again
While going to university, Rana Al-Kasmo received treatment and got well. <I began to study law again despite all obstacles. Because I dreamed of being a lawyer. I will struggle until I graduate from the Faculty of Law. I have one more year to graduate from the faculty. Now, I am almost 40 years old but I continue to study.>
'Families should support their daughters'
Rana Al-Kasmo emphasized that women should believe in their ability and strength. <They should strive for whatever they want to be in the future. My family and sister support me to realize my dream. Families should support their daughters to realize their dreams.> >>

Rahel Dink
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 17 Nov 2023
<<Rakel Dink: We have been breathing the same air as murderers for years
News Center- The Hrant Dink Foundation has held a two-day international conference titled <Minority Rights in the Centennial of the Republic> in Istanbul. Rakel Dink, the wife of Agos newspaper's editor-in-chief Hrant Dink who was killed by Ogün Samast in front of the newspaper building on 19 January 2007, made the opening speech of the conference.
In her speech, Rakel Dink evacuated the release of Ogün Samast on Wednesday.
She said: <We have been breathing the same air as murderers for years. Once again, he shoved injustice in our faces and sent us back to the most difficult days of mourning. Don’t we know that we breathe the same air as the murderers of Sabahattin Ali, Ilhan Erdost, Zeki Tekiner, Ugur Mumcu and Musa Anter? The issue is never about whether this or that person gets more than 3-5 years prison sentence. Since the first day, we have said that darkness must be investigated. We have said that justice in this case is a must for the democratization of the country.> >>

Displaced in Afrin
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 17 Nov 2023 - by HESNA MIHEMED
<<6th winter of displaced people of Afrin in Shahba
Shahba- After the Turkish occupation of Afrin, thousands of people had to leave their houses. Some of the displaced people of Afrin have been living in the Berxwedan camp located in the Favin district of Shahba canton. The displaced women living in the camp told NuJINHA that living conditions in the camp would be more difficult for them in the winter. In the camp, the displaced people of Afrin also suffer from the siege imposed on Shahba canton by the Syrian government.
The municipality provides support
Lilav Şexo, Co-mayor of the Berxwedan Camp Municipality, told NuJINHA that they do their best to lessen the burden on the displaced people. <Despite the obstacles of the Damascus Government (Syrian government), we distributed tents, nylon layers and cement to the people so that they could make preparations for winter. We asked them to renew their tents to protect them from rain or cold winter. Despite the siege, we will keep working to meet the needs of the people.>
'We cannot meet our needs due to the siege'
Lina Qasem is one of the displaced women of Afrin who have lived in the camp for about six years. Speaking about the living conditions in the camp, she said, <Although tents and nylon layers cannot protect us from rain and cold winter, we keep resisting. Winter has already arrived but we do not have fuel. We have difficulties in accessing healthcare services. The attacks of the Turkish state continue and we cannot meet our needs due to the siege. Due to the lack of fuel, we suffer from electricity shortage.>
'We resist despite the siege'
Emina Xilo keeps resisting the difficult living conditions in the camp so that they will return to Afrin. <No one can endure the difficult living conditions that we experience. We have no fuel to meet our needs. The people living in Shahba face many obstacles but we resist them,> said Emîna Xilo. She also talked about the living conditions in Afrin before it was occupied by the Turkish state. <We had no problem. One day, we will return to Afrin and have that comfortable life again.> >>

Mai Al-Obeidi
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 16 Nov 2023 - by ZOUHOUR MECHERGUI
<<Tunisian activist: Women are subjected to many forms of violence
Tunisia- Tunisian human rights activist Mai Al-Obeidi thinks that gender-based violence has become a phenomenon that affects all women in Tunisia. In recent years, Tunisia has recorded many cases of gender-based violence and femicide.
'Justice has been served'
In 2021, Refka Cherni, a 26-year-old mother from the Kef region, was killed by her police husband. Speaking about the 34-year prison sentence issued against her husband, Mai Al-Obeidi said, <Justice has been served after two years as a result of feminist struggle.> Although she had reported her abusive husband many times, she was killed by her husband. <Although she reported violence against her many times, she was killed by her police husband because no necessary measures were taken. The decision of the court in this case is a fair decision. We expect this decision to be a deterrent decision,> said Mai Al-Obeidi.
'The law is not effectively implemented'
In 2017, Tunisia passed Law 58 to combat violence against women. The adoption of Law-58 was a long-fought achievement to combat violence against women in Tunisia. <Law-58 is a comprehensive law and it is capable of protecting women against violence; however, the law is not effectively implemented. Survivors of gender-based violence are convinced to accept their situation in women's shelters. Dozen women, like Refka Cherni, were killed because of irresponsible and ill-considered actions.> Mai Al-Obeidi also commented on the arrest of Abeer Moussa, the head of the Tunisian Free Constitutional Party, and said, <Violence has reached female politicians in Tunisian parliament. Activist Chaima Issa (A member of the opposition's National Salvation Front) was arrested on 22 February. She is now free but she faces oppression; she is prevented from travelling to Paris. She cannot even participate in demonstrations being held to be in solidarity with the Palestinian people.> Underlining that male authority seeks to marginalize women in all spheres of life, she called on all Tunisian women to break stereotypes and traditional images that the patriarchal mindset imposed on them. She also spoke about the role of NGOs in defending women’s rights. <They should carry out awareness-raising activities about women's rights. Feminist organizations make great efforts for the effective amendment of Law-58.> >>
