Moroccon activists
Jinha - Womens News Agency - 29 Nov 2023 - by HANAN HARITE
<<'Women are most affected by conflicts in the Middle East'
Morocco- Since the <Operation Al-Aqsa Flood> launched by Hamas on Israel on October 7, Israel has been carrying out attacks on the Gaza Strip, targeting civilians and their settlements. Yesterday, the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas in Gaza was extended by two days. NuJINHA spoke to women activists in Morocco about Israel's attacks on Gaza. Moroccan political activist and human rights defender Hind Mumayez condemned the ongoing Israel's attacks on Gaza. <Israel has carried out inhuman practices against the Palestinians with the aim of annihilating them and erasing their identity. The Middle East suffers from political tensions and armed conflicts in Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen. These countries are affected by the intervention of the great powers in the region. The Palestinians have been resisting for more than 70 years to get their land back.>
Recalling that women paid a heavy price in the attacks of ISIS on Iraq, she said:
<Yazidi women were killed, raped and abducted by ISIS. The sovereign powers use the conflicts in the region in order to seize the resources of these countries and control their economy, which has a negative impact on society.>
'Western countries support Israel's plans on Palestine'
Noting that the Palestinian people have been living in difficult conditions as a result of the occupation of their land by Israel since the 1940s, Hind Mumayez said, <The Palestinian people have been resisting to have a free life. The Western countries support Israel's plans on Palestine because they want to extend their complete control over all Palestinian lands. Consequently, thousands of people have been displaced and killed. Israel targets women and children in its attacks and this is a war crime.>
'The war must be stopped immediately'
Hind Mumayez also spoke about political and economic stability in the region. <The war must be stopped to rebuild political and economic stability in the region. The international conventions must be implemented to protect civilians. Women have an important role to support the Palestinians. They should hold marches and protests to demand the stop of genocide being committed in Gaza.>
'The Middle East has become a region of international conflicts'
Malika Zekhnini, a member of the Moroccan Parliament and a professor of International Law at Sultan Moulay Slimane University, thinks that the Middle East has become a region of international conflicts. <There has been tension for decades. However, the international community has been unable to solve the Palestine issue. As in Syria and Iraq, violence, chaos and foreign intervention have expanded in Palestine.> Speaking about the living conditions of women in conflict zones such as Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Iraq, she said, <It is known that many rights and freedoms are suspended in conflict zones. Women, children and old people are most affected by conflicts in the Middle East. Women and children in conflict zones are subjected to many rights violations such as arrest, kidnapping, sexual assault, rape and they are deprived of their right to education and health.>
'Women and girls must be protected'
Malika Zekhnini said that an international law protecting civilians in armed conflicts should be drafted. <Women and girls in conflict zones are subjected to different forms of violence. Women and girls in conflict zones must be protected. Palestinian women have been subjected to all forms of violence such as physical, social, economic and political violence for years. Women in Yemen, Iraq and Syria are also subjected to all forms of violence. The solution of the Palestine issue is a must to achieve peace in the Middle East.> >>

<<Women trying to earn living face Taliban oppression
Kabul- A women-s handicraft exhibition was held at the Afghanistan International Expo Center in Kabul between November 13 to November 25. Men were not allowed to visit the exhibition controlled by the Taliban. NuJINHA spoke to Nilofar Fakhri, one of the women participating in the exhibition to display and sell their products. <I never went to school. I only did household chores and raised my children until my husband fell sick. He was the only breadwinner of our family and could not work anymore. So, I decided to support my sick husband and children. I learned how to sew by attending a sewing course. I came to Kabul to sell my products and the products of her neighbors,> said Nilofar Fakhri.
Two women were arrested
Two exhibition participants were arrested by the Taliban for protesting the ban on men. Nilofar Fakhri said, <Two women were selling food at the exhibition. Since men were not allowed to visit the exhibition, they could not sell their products. They were arrested for protesting the situation. Men are the only buyers in Afghanistan but they are not allowed to visit the exhibitions held for women. The women were arrested for demanding men be allowed to visit the exhibition. After several hours, they came back and participated in the exhibition again. I don't know exactly what happened to them in detention but one of the women did not have good mental health when she came back.> Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, men have not been allowed to visit the exhibitions of women. Nilofar Fakhri told us that some women decided to not participate in the exhibitions because they could not sell their products. <The Taliban have banned women and girls from schools and universities and from working. The only thing we are allowed to do is to participate in the exhibitions; however, the Taliban ban men from visiting the exhibitions of women because they do not want women to be seen by men. No matter how much we are oppressed, we must not give up. We should struggle.> >>

<<Former Afghan MP: Women face different forms of violence and oppression in all countries
Afghanistan- Former Afghan MP Belqis Roshan is one of the resisting and brave women, who stand with the Afghan people, especially women. Before the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, she was the only voice in the Afghan parliament that exposed the crimes of the ruling government and the U.S. in Afghanistan. NuJINHA spoke to her on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
'Afghan women are held captive at their homes'
Emphasizing that Afghan women have been deprived of their rights since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, she said, <Afghan women are held captive at their homes due to the policies carried out in the name of religion. Women all around the world hold activities and events to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women while Afghan women are deprived of their rights.>
'The international community remains silent'
Speaking about the crimes committed against Afghan women, she said, <Today, Afghan women are subjected to violence and crimes against humanity; however, the international community remains silent because of the competitions of powerful countries such as China, Russians, America, and NATO. Our people, especially women, are the main victims of these competitions.> Belqis Roshan believes that Afghan women should learn that, <Rights are not given but taken. Self sacrifice, persistent and serious struggle are needed to take women's rights back. Unfortunately, women face different forms of violence and oppression in all countries, even in European countries and America. However, in fundamentalist countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Libya, Palestine, Iraq, Pakistan and others, fundamentalism has become the very devil for women.>
'The resistance of women in Iran is a role model for us'
Belqis Roshan also commented on the resistance of the women in Iran. <The regime of the mullahs, which sacrifices hundreds of thousands of men and especially women in Iran today, was brought to power by the USA. The USA did the same thing in Afghanistan.>
'Women are the first victims of wars and conflicts'. Speaking about the Russian-Ukraine war and Israel's attacks on Gaza, she said, <Women are the first victims of wars and conflicts. The US and NATO occupied Afghanistan claiming that they would liberate Afghan women; however, they killed women the most. After the Taliban took over Afghanistan, they first targeted women.> >>

<<Call to women for Afrin: The Turkish state should be held responsible for its crimes
Shahba- Women and children in the areas occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in North and East Syria are subjected to many rights violations such as rape, kidnapping, forced marriage and all forms of violence. Afrin was occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in 2018 and since then the people of Afrin, especially women, have faced inhuman crimes. Since the beginning of 2023, more than 33 women, including four girls and three old women, have been kidnapped in Afrin, according to the Afrin News 24, an online news agency. The news agency also says that six women have been killed; seven women, including four girls have been raped in Afrin. On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, NuJINHA spoke to Zeynep Suleyman, member of Afrin-Shahba Assembly, about the ongoing rights violations and violence against women and girls in Afrin.
'The Turkish state saw the resisting women as a threat'
Indicating that the revolution in Rojava is a women's revolution, she said, <Following the revolution, many women's organizations and centers were opened to provide support to women for improving themselves. In Afrin, women achieved many gains; however, the Turkish state saw the gains of women and the resisting women in Afrin as a threat. For this reason, it attacked and still attacks women.>
'Silence is the confirmation of the crimes'
After the occupation of Afrin, the nature of the city was plundered and the people were subjected to torture. Zeynep Suleyman criticized the silence of the international community against the rights violations in Afrin. <The people of Afrin were openly attacked. Despite the documents proving the crimes committed by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in Afrin, the international community still remains silent. 'The Turkish state must be held responsible for its crimes'
<Women in Afrin cannot go out due to rights violations against them,> Zeynep Suleyman said, <They make great efforts to make the atrocities committed by the Turkish state heard all around the world.
