<<Mahsa Amini and Iranian Women Nominated For Sakharov Prize
Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Iranian woman who died in Tehran a
year ago while in custody for an alleged hijab infraction, has been
nominated for this year's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the
European Union's top rights prize. Amini's death sparked months of
women-led protests across Iran demanding fundamental changes in the
country, including gender equality and more freedoms. The authorities
unleashed a brutal crackdown on the Woman, Life, Freedom protest
movement, killing more than 500 people and detaining thousands. The
European Parliament announced on September 20 that Amini was nominated
by the legislature's three largest blocs, making her the favorite to be
chosen for the prestigious award. Two of the blocs also nominated <the
women of Iran> and the <Woman, Life, Freedom Movement.> Three Afghan
education activists - Marzia Amiri, Parasto Hakim and Matiullah Wesa -
were also among those nominated for the Sakharov Prize, which will be
presented in December. Each year, the European Parliament awards the
Sakharov Prize to honour <exceptional individuals and organisations
defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.> Nominations are made
by political groups or by at least 40 lawmakers.>>

<<'We should take an immediate action for women in the occupied
areas'
Kobane - In many countries of the world, especially in the Middle
East, women's rights are violated by the patriarchal systems of
sovereign powers. The Turkish state also violates women's rights in the
occupied cities of Afrin, Serekaniye, Gire Spi, Bab, Ezaz and Jarablus.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Macide Hesun, coordinating member of the
Kongra Star in the Euphrates Region of North and East Syria, talked
about rights violations against women in the occupied areas.
'Women are killed due to the patriarchal systems of sovereign
powers'
Emphasizing that women are killed due to the patriarchal systems
of sovereign powers, she said, <These systems carry out attacks on
women's identity. Throughout history, female philosophers, academics,
creators and pioneers were killed under different excuses, and this
situation continues today.>
'Women in the occupied areas have been detached from life'
Highlighting that the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions
occupied many areas with the same mindset, she said, <We can imagine the
inhuman living conditions of the women living in Afrin, Serekaniye, Gire
Spi, Bab, Ezaz and Jarablus. In North and East Syria, women have played
an active role in all facets of life. They can make decisions about
themselves, their lives and their society. While the women in North and
East Syria try to get rid of the oppression of the nation-state system,
women living in the occupied areas face different forms of oppression.
They have been detached and isolated from life. This is a genocide
against women. This genocide is not only a physical genocide but also a
psychological genocide.> She also highlighted that the Turkish state and
Turkish-backed factions have imposed an isolation on the women living in
the occupied areas. <Every day, women are killed, raped, kidnapped,
tortured and forced into marriage. Therefore, the situation in the
occupied areas is serious and dangerous.>
'We should take an immediate action'
In her speech, Macîde Hesun called on all women's organizations
and movements to <take an immediate action for the women living in the
occupied areas. We should support the women of Sweida demanding freedom
for women in the occupied areas.> >>

<<Yazidi community building new life in Shengal targeted
Shengal (Sinjar)- ISIS attacked Shengal on August 3, 2014,
killing thousands of Yazidis and abducting thousands of Yazidi women.
The whole world just watched inhuman crimes committed against Yazidis
and Yazidi women. The Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)
left Shengal instead of protecting the Yazidi community from ISIS.
They rebuilt their lives
When the Yazidi community was left alone, the fighters of the HPG,
YJA-STAR, YPJ and YPG rescued the Yazidi community from genocide by
opening a humanitarian corridor between Rojava and Shengal. The dirty
plans on Shengal failed. After Shengal was liberated from ISIS, the
Yazidi community formed their own defense units, the Shengal Resistance
Units (YBŞ) and the Shengal Women's Units (YJŞ). The Yazidis began to
rebuild their lives based on the ideology and the philosophy of Kurdish
leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Attacks do not end
However, the attacks on Shengal do not end. Dozens, including
Yazidi leaders Mam Zeki, Seîd Hesen, Zerdeşt Şengali, Merwan Bedel,
Dindar Avesta, Pîran Pîr and Çiya Feqir, were killed in airstrikes on
Shengal. The aim of the attacks is to achieve the goal that ISIS failed
to achieve on August 3 by carried out airstrikes on Shengal with the
support of the KDP and foreign actors. These attacks want to make the
Yazidi community take a step back.
They want to destroy the Yazidi identity
Iraq cannot protect the territorial integrity of Iraq. If Iraq
had not pursued its own policies and interests, the Yazidis would not
have been attacked. The aim of the attacks is to destroy the Yazidi
identity, belief, culture and history.
Number of female fighters increases in Shengal
Those who pay the highest price were Yazidi women; they were
abducted, raped, sold in slave markets. Therefore, the ideology and the
philosophy of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan inspired Yazidi women. They
began to organize themselves for freedom in order to take revenge on the
enemy and prevent another genocide to be committed against them. They
established the Yazidi Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Azadiya
Jinen Ezidi-TAJÊ) and formed their own defense units, the YJŞ. Today,
the number of female fighters increases in Shengal. Participating in all
facets of life such as military and politics, they govern and protect
themselves and make their voices heard all around the world.
They become role model
The Yazidi community has become a role model for the whole world
with their self-governing local administration thanks to the ideology
and the philosophy of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. The Yazidi
community never forgets the attacks against them. The agreement signed
by the Turkish state, KDP, and the Iraqi government on October 9, 2020,
is one of the attacks against the community. Seeing this agreement as a
continuation of the attacks on them, the Yazidi community is determined
not to allow the plans and the decisions that do not include their will
and opinion to be implemented. The Yazidi community has always stood by
peace and stability in Iraq. They have made many peaceful attempts to
make their status based on self-governance to be recognized by Iraq.
Resisting all kinds of attacks by taking no step back, the Yazidi
community has paid heavy prices throughout history and continues to pay
heavy prices. Despite everything, the Yazidi community preserves their
belief and culture. The Yazidi community has rebuilt their lives based
on the ideology and the philosophy of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
The self-governing local administration, TAJE, PADE (Yazidi Freedom and
Democracy Party) YBŞ/YJŞ know very well that the offensive policies
aimed at annihilating the Yazidis will continue with different methods.
The agreement signed by the Turkish state, KDP, and the Iraqi government
on October 9, 2020, shows that.
Global silence
On March 24, 2017, the Turkish state launched airstrikes on the
Shengal mountains for the first time and killed a child named Genco. At
the same time, the Turkish state fired artillery on the Kers Valley,
Amûd and Dere regions. Although there are ongoing attacks on the Yazidi
community in Shengal, there is a local and global silence against the
attacks. The attacks target hospitals, schools, houses and the fighters,
who fought and defeated ISIS. On September 17, 2023, Turkish drones
targeted a vehicle belonging to the Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) near
the Serdest camp in Shengal and killed three Yazidi commanders. The
Yazidi community has vowed to avenge the killing of three commanders.
The Yazidi community is determined to resist all kinds of attacks
against them. >>

<<Protests in Sweida: We have broken the barriers of fear
Sweida- On 17 August 2023, peaceful protests erupted in the Druze
majority city of Sweida over the high inflation rate and deteriorating
economic situation in Syria. he protests have entered their fifth week.
Yesterday, hundreds gathered in Karama Square of the city, demanding the
change of the government.
'Our struggle is not a new struggle'
Salwa Al-Abdullah, a retired teacher who participated in the
protest, said, <Our struggle is not a new struggle, it dates back
decades. We want our country to be a strong country without depending on
anyone. We demand poor working conditions be improved. I am a retired
teacher and receive only 180, 000 Syrian liras per month. This amount is
insufficient to meet my needs. I am now 80 years old and suffer from
many health problems. Sometimes, I have to pay 200,000 Syrian liras to
buy my medicines. I mean my salary is insufficient to buy even my
medicines. I barely walk but I walked until here to participate in this
protest.>
'We will not give up our demands'
Shoruk Al-Abdullah, another protester, thinks that the people of
Syria are deprived of their rights. <We hold protests because there are
many reasons such as poverty, humiliation and oppression. People are
deprived of their rights in all cities of Syria. We cannot meet our
basic needs under current conditions. We will keep holding protests, we
will not give up our demands for the change of the government and the
elimination of corruption. We demand freedom for everyone. Our protests
are peaceful protests because we demand a life with dignity.>
Underlining that they have already broken the barriers of fear, Shoruk
Al-Abdullah said, <We will keep holding protests until our demands are
met.> >>

<<Yemeni activists launch initiative to give information about
women's legal rights
Yemen- Many women do not know anything about their legal rights
such as alimony, custody and marriage. In Yemen, women cannot bring the
problems faced by them to trial due to social pressure and long-lasting
trials. Yemeni lawyer Gaza Muhammad Al-Sami has launched a voluntary
initiative so that women know their legal rights. The aim of the
initiative is to raise awareness among women about their legal rights.
40-year-old Fatima Qaed wanted to ask a divorce; however, she did not
file a divorce case because of long-lasting divorce trials in the
country. <My husband knew that I did not know anything about my legal
rights so he told me he would take care of the children if I filed a
divorce case. I did not know anything about the laws and started
thinking about how I would take care of my children if I filed a divorce
case. I gave up all my rights, including my right to custody, to get a
divorce.> Fatima Qaed is only one of the Yemeni women, who do not know
anything about their legal rights. Recently, she has participated in
seminars on women's rights in order to know her legal rights and help
other women, who do not know their rights.
She gives information to women about their rights
Yemeni lawyer Gazze Muhammad Al-Sami thinks there is still a long
way to go for raising awareness among Yemeni women about their legal
rights. <The beginning of rain is a drop and the beginning of success is
an idea,> she said, <As a lawyer, I noticed that many women did not know
anything about their legal rights and that they suffered due to their
ignorance of the law. They did not know anything about their rights in
marriage and after-divorce such as alimony and custody. I decided to
take an initiative to raise awareness among women about their legal
rights. I have published legal texts on my social media account to tell
women about their rights.> Women lawyers held several seminars to
discuss on discriminatory laws in Yemen. <Some articles distinguish
between women and men. These articles must be amended. Some educated
people in society accuse me of encouraging women divorce. But my aim is
to raise awareness among women about their legal rights,> she told us.
Gazze Muhammad Al-Sami highlighted that a large part of the society does
not want women to have their rights and know their rights. <Our society
is a patriarchal society trying to exert control over women. Traditions
and customs are imposed on women. I hope that all women in Yemen will
learn their constitutional and legal rights.> Journalist Manal Sharaf
believes that when women learn their legal rights, they will enjoy their
rights. <Male violence is nothing more than an attempt to take away
women's dignity. Since men are the breadwinners of their families, they
do not want women to learn their rights so that they can confine women
to home. Women should participate in the labor force to be independent.>
Speaking about the initiative launched by Gazze Muhammad Al-Sami, Manal
Sharaf said, <Her initiative is a very positive step. She is a lawyer
and knows everything about the legal rights of women. She helps women by
giving them information about their rights.> Gazze Muhammad Al-Sami
wants her initiative to be a real project that provides legal support to
women.>>

<<Campaign from TJA: We will raise our objections on the ground
Amed- On September 15, the Free Women's Movement (Kurdish:
Tevgera Jinen Azad-TJA) held a press conference in Riha (Urfa) and
announced that they would launch a campaign called, <Bi 'Jin Jiyan
Azadi'ye ber bi azadiye ve (English: Towards freedom with 'Jin Jiyan
Azadi')>. The campaign will kick off in the Silopi district of Şırnak on
September 20 and in Istanbul on September 23. The aim of the campaign,
which will last until March 8, International Women's Day, is to draw
attention to the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan,
special war policies, femicide, destruction of nature and oppression of
Kurdish language. As part of the campaign, the women of the TJA will go
from house to house and hold meetings with women. At the press
conference, the TJA called on all women in Turkey, feminist
organizations and women all over the world to raise the struggle for
freedom together.
'The main aim is to lift the isolation'
NuJINHA spoke to Green Left Party Amed MP Halide Turkoglu about
the campaign. <We have launched this campaign due to the recent
misogynist policies, the increase in the cases of femicide and against
special war policies,> she told us. Speaking about the main aims of the
campaign, she said:
<The main aim of the campaign is to lift the isolation imposed on
Mr. Abdullah Ocalan; women will start a mobilization to break the
isolation. The continuation of the isolation means that war policies are
experienced in this country every day. Without lifting the isolation,
the organizations and movements defending democracy, women's rights and
environment cannot unite and act together. For this reason, the first
aim of the campaign is to lift the isolation.>
'We will raise our objections'
Speaking about the special war policies carried out in Kurdistan,
she said, <Femicide, drug addiction, prostitution and the policy of
impunity at the highest level. We will hold workshops to raise
awareness. We will raise our objections on the ground to the recent
attacks on women's gains. Society needs to form a defense mechanism
against the misogynist language of politicians and the reactionary
alliances it has formed in the parliament.>
Halide Turkoglu gave information about the activities to be
carried out as part of the campaign.
<This campaign aims to form a network of struggle everywhere.
Awareness-raising activities and gatherings will be carried out as part
of the campaign. The main agenda of the campaign is to raise solidarity
everywhere.> >>

<<Call to strengthen struggle against attacks on Shengal
Shengal (Sinjar)- Turkish state attacked Shengal yesterday
afternoon by using drones. The attack killed three members of the
Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ). The members of the Yazidi Free Women's
Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Azadiya Jinen Ezidi-TAJE) reacted to the
ongoing Turkish attacks on Shengal and condemned the silence of the
Iraqi government against the attacks. Sinem Ibrahim, member of the TAJE,
expressed her condolences to the families of those who lost their lives
in the Turkish drone attack. <The silence of the Iraqi government
against the Turkish attacks on Shengal is unacceptable. As the Yazidi
community, we should take a radical stance against the Iraqi government
because the Iraqi government allows the attacks to be carried out
against us and this is a shame of the Iraqi government,> she said.
'We will strengthen our resistance'
Sinem Ibrahim emphasized that they would strengthen their defense
and resistance against attacks. <As the Yazidi community, we must
protect our faith, culture and lands more than ever in order to give the
necessary response to our enemies. We must defend and strengthen our
organizations and institutions to have a strong stance. Our enemies must
know very well that we will be stronger because we experienced a
genocide and lost our people so that we could govern ourselves in an

<<Tunisian activist: Women's struggle is the key to change
societies
Tunisia- The 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' uprising that started in Iran
and Rojhelat Kurdistan following the killing of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa
Amini by Iran's so-called <morality police> for not wearing her hijab
properly in Iran's capital Tehran, continues. <The killing of Jina Mahsa
Amini ignited an uprising not only in Iran but also around the world,>
said Najat Arar, Tunisian women's rights defender, activist and
sociologist.
'Hijab is used as a tool to control women'
Pointing the oppression faced by women in Iran for years, Najat
Arar said, <The Iranian regime has been using all kinds of inhuman
practices, such as execution, arrest, torture, to quell the protests for
about a year.> In the interview with NuJINHA, she also talked about the
compulsory hijab rule.
<Hijab is used as a tool to control women’s behaviors and bodies.
You can see this in Afghanistan. Afghan women participated in
decision-making after struggling for 20 years. However, their
achievements were taken from them after the Taliban took control of the
country. Hijab is used as a tool in Iran. Iranian women should keep
struggling because women's struggle is the key to change societies.>
Indicating that although Tunisian women have taken some of their rights,
Najat Arar said, <They keep struggling for rights and freedoms. What
difference between Tunisia and other countries is the women's lasting
struggle for their rights and that NGOs are stronger and work
coordinately with each other. Therefore, I call on the women of Iran and
Rojhelat Kurdistan to keep struggling.> >>

<<Siege imposed on Shahba deepens humanitarian crisis
Shahba- Thousands of people were forcibly displaced from Afrin to
Shahba after the Turkish state and Turkish-backed faction occupied the
city on March 18, 2018. Living in Shahba, the displaced people of Afrin
have been subjected to ongoing Turkish attacks and faced difficult
living conditions due to the siege imposed by the Syrian government on
the region for five years. Due to the siege, the residents of Shahba
have no access to essential supplies such as medicines and fuel. The
siege directly affects the region's economy and health sector. The
residents also suffer from price hikes caused by the siege.
'People cannot make ends meet'
Speaking about the effect of the siege on the economy of the
region, Rehima Kinco, member of the Afrin-Shahba Economy Council, said,
<People are prevented from accessing essential supplies due to the siege
and therefore face many difficulties. Shahba is an agricultural region
so the only source of income for many people is agriculture; however,
they cannot access agricultural materials due to the siege. The siege
also decreases job opportunities in the region. For this reason, people
cannot make ends meet anymore and face many challenges.>
Eliya Mihemed, Co-chair of the Afrin-Shahba Health Organization,
talked about the effect of the siege on the health sector in the region.
<The Syrian government has imposed a siege on Shahba for five
years. This siege deprives thousands of essential supplies. The health
sector is also affected by the siege; we suffer from the lack of medical
supplies. There are seriously sick people, who need to take medicines
every day. Due to the siege, we cannot provide medicines to sick people.

<<Women's Time Association: More safe spaces should be created
for women
Istanbul- The Women's Time Association (Turkish: Kadın Zamanı
Dernegi) has released its 7-month report (January-July) prepared by its
Counseling Center. The report includes information about the
implementation of Law No. 6284. The report pointed out that women had to
work without insurance due to fear of being fired and subjected to
serious economic violence. The report stated that women who found jobs
under difficult conditions faced high rents and they were subjected to
harassment by homeowners when they wanted to rent a house. <Single women
are constantly harassed by homeowners wanting to increase house rents.
There is a serious prejudice among homeowners against divorced women.
Women who object to the increase in house rents, are forced to rent
houses in unsafe areas.>
'Financial reasons are among the reasons for early marriages'
The report also mentioned the issue of early marriage. <The
religious institutions often make statements about the marriage age and
these statements encourage men to legitimize their demand. Each
individual has the right to decide about his/her life. Financial reasons
are among the reasons for early marriages.> The report also touched upon
the effects of the February 6 earthquake on women and girls, <Volunteer
psychologists make great efforts to support women and girls affected by
the earthquake.>
'Failure in implementation of Law No. 6284 causes distrust'
<Victims of violence have no access to legal support,> the report
said, <Failure in the implementation of Law No. 6284 causes distrust
among women. Therefore, women victims of violence have to return to
their home where they are subjected to violence. Women avoid taking
steps to get support because they do not believe there is a system
combating gender-based violence.> In the report, the association called
on the authorities to provide safe spaces for women. <More safe spaces
should be created for women. The Women's Time Association aims to
prevent, combat and eliminate violence against women. We will keep
struggling until violence against women ends and women have a livable

<< <Women of Deir ez-Zor should protect their gains>
Kobane- Attempts to destroy the system built by the Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) with the participation of
people from all nationalities and beliefs in North and East Syria
continue. On September 2, the Syrian government, Iran and the Turkish
state had a deal to prevent this system. Their aim was to achieve their
goal by increasing tension between the tribes and the Syrian Democratic
Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor.
'Their aim is to destroy the system in North and East Syria'
NuJINHA spoke to the women of Kobane about the recent
developments in Deir ez-Zor. Loujain Al-Salem, coordinating member of
the Kongra Star in the Kobane Canton located in the Euphrates Region of
North and East Syria, condemned the ongoing attacks on the system of
North and East Syria. <What is happening in Deir ez-Zor aims to destroy
the system based on democracy and unity of people from all nationalities
and beliefs in North and East Syria. They aim to destroy the system by
increasing tension among people. Despite all their efforts, they will
not achieve their goal in our region,> Loujain Al-Salem said.
'Women should protect their gains'
Calling on the tribes not to be deceived, Lucain Al-Salem said,
<In order to eliminate the terrorism in which women are killed,
kidnapped and raped, the tribes of the Deir ez-Zor region should protect
and defend the region.> In her speech, Lucain Al-Salem emphasized that
the conflicts would bring nothing but destruction.
<During the rule of the Syrian government, the women of Deir
ez-Zor were completely excluded from society; they had no status in
society and faced the atrocity of ISIS. They were subjected to violence,
torture and injustice. Today, women have become strong politicians,
warriors, teachers, journalists and the pillars of society under the
umbrella of the Autonomous Administration. Therefore, they should
protect their gains they have achieved through years of resistance.>
'Women have important role in the continuation of this system'
Mona Ahmed, member of the Kongra Star in Sirin, told us that many
sovereign countries see the democratic system in North and East Syria as
a threat to them. Pointing to the important role of women in the
continuation of the system, she said: <We should unite and resist. We
should protect our system built by the efforts and sacrifices of our
people. The Turkish state has repeatedly tried to annihilate the people
in the region by cutting off the water, using drones, warplanes and
launching operations; however, it has failed and it will fail. Today, it
tries to sow discord among us but it will not achieve its goals again.>
'People should unite'
Nahla Hassan, a woman from Kobanê, thinks there is an attempt to
increase tension between Arabs and Kurds in Deir ez-Zor through the
tribes in the region. <They want to destroy our system by disregarding
the will of the people. But they will not be able to do this.>
Emphasizing that people live together in peace under the umbrella of the
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Autonomous Administration of
North and East Syria, she said, <All people of North and East Syria
should unite to prevent such attempts. The enemies of this system
previously tried to destroy this system but they failed. We call on
women and young people of North and East Syria to unite in order to
protect the gains of the revolution.> >>
