Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 Dec 2023
<<Baha'i Adherent Nafiseh Saadat Yar Receives One-Year Prison Sentence
and Social Exclusion in Gorgan
Nafiseh Saadat Yar, a Baha'i adherent residing in Gorgan, Golestan
province, has been handed a one-year prison sentence and four years of
social rights deprivation by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic
of Iran. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, the first branch of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary
Court in Gorgan sentenced Nafiseh Saadat Yar for the charge of
<propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.> It is important to
note that this year, Nafiseh Saadat Yar faced dismissal from her
position as a representative in a private company, a consequence of
pressure exerted by the IRGC's intelligence department. Both Nafiseh
Saadat Yar and her husband, Puya Amri, were arrested on February 1,
2023, and subsequently granted temporary release from prison by posting
a bail of 500 million tomans pending the conclusion of legal
proceedings. Baha'is in Iran, including Nafiseh Saadat Yar, have been
subject to systematic pressures and illegal actions by security
institutions, involving the confiscation of properties, the closure of
businesses, and restrictions on their access to education, in addition
to arbitrary arrests.>>

Maryam Moghadam
Jinha - Womens News Agency 21 Dec 2023
<<Call on Iranian authorities to immediately drop all charges against
Maryam Moghadam
News Center- PEN America has published an open letter signed by 30 film
organizations, festivals and professionals. The letter calls on Iranian
authorities to immediately drop all charges against Maryam Moghadam and
Behtash Sanaeeha as well as lift the travel ban on them. The signatories
include the Berlinale, the Amsterdam-based International Coalition for
Filmmakers at Risk, and PEN America in New York. In September 2023,
Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha had planned to travel to Paris for
post-production on My Favorite Cake; however, Iranian authorities
confiscated their passports and informed them that they were banned from
leaving Iran. They were also notified that they would stand trial. <We
fervently urge the Iranian authorities to cease the relentless
persecution of filmmakers, writers, artists, musicians, and all who
courageously articulate the aspirations, humanity, and dreams of the
Iranian people,> the letter said. <Now is the time for change, starting
with Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghadam, whose latest film, My
Favourite Cake, is believed to have angered the country's hard-line
Islamist authorities, although details of the charges have yet to be
communicated.> The letter also alluded to the cases of director Saeed
Roustayi, who was sentenced this year to six-months in prison on charges
of <anti-regime propaganda activity> for screening his film Leila’s
Brothers at Cannes in 2022 without permission; jailed journalist and
Iranian Nobel Peace laureate Narges Mohammadi, and rapper Saman Yasin,
who said he had been tortured while in jail. <Filmmakers, writers, and
other artists play an essential role in establishing free and vibrant
societies, serving as architects of communication and collaboration and
inspiring citizens to dream of better futures based on new possibilities
and ideas. Instead of stifling their voices, governments must elevate
and celebrate artists for their invaluable contributions to society,>
the letter said.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 Dec 2023
<<Urgent Concerns Regarding the Deteriorating Health of Political
Prisoner Fateme Sepehari in Mashhad Central Prison
Fateme Sepehari, a political prisoner who has been serving a three-month
sentence in Mashhad's Central Prison, is experiencing severe physical
and mental distress. Despite her condition, prison authorities are
reluctant to facilitate her transfer to medical facilities outside the
prison. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, 59-year-old political prisoner Fatemeh Sepehri is being
denied necessary medical treatment while enduring significant physical
pain and mental pressure within the Mashhal Central Prison. In a
statement posted on his personal page, Asghar Sepehri, Fatemeh Sepehri's
brother, expressed deep concern about his sister's health. He noted, <My
sister's health condition is alarming. Due to psychological pressure
from the prison authorities, her heart rate is consistently high. The
prison healthcare only provides injections and sleeping drugs.> Asghar
Sepehri further highlighted that despite a recent <cabin meeting> on
Tuesday, December 19, his sister is unable to sleep due to severe pain
in her left hand, impeding her ability to move her fingers. Although a
surgeon recommended physiotherapy last week, no action has been taken by
the head of the women's department, Leila Raminfar, and her deputy,
Rahimzadeh. Fatemeh Sepehri has also reported eye pain and dryness to
prison authorities, yet they refuse to arrange a specialist examination.
Fateme Sepehari, a mother of four children, was apprehended by security
forces at her Mashhad residence on September 21, 2023, to serve a
ten-year prison sentence. She was subsequently taken to the city's

Nima Shahsavari and Hiva Mostafa'i
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 Dec 2023
<<Uncertain Fate of Two Young Kurdish Refugees Following Boat Capsizing
in the English Channel
Nima Shahsavari, aged 24, and Hiva Mostafaei, aged 27, both hailing from
Paveh, faced a tragic incident when the boat they were on capsized while
attempting to cross the English Channel. Disturbingly, there has been no
information regarding their well-being for the past five days. According
to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights on
Friday, December 15, 2023, Nima Shahsavari and Hiva Mustafaei, residents
of the village of Khanqah in Paveh, Kermanshah province, disappeared
during a water route accident en route from France to England. Media
outlets have reported that 64 individuals have been successfully rescued
from the perilous situation involving the refugee-carrying boat.
Regrettably, some of the survivors are said to be in critical condition.
Nima Shahsavari and Hiva Mustafa'i had previously embarked on a journey
to Europe through Turkey with the intention of seeking asylum. In their
latest attempt to reach England, their boat overturned, leaving their
fate shrouded in uncertainty.
Recent reports highlight a concerning migration trend reaching even
remote villages. Notably, local medias of Iran documented an instance
where 115 people from a village in Darreh Shahr city, Ilam province,
departed for Australia, underscoring the widespread impact of migration
on communities.>>

Note from Gino d'Artali: the ocean crossing to the UK is dangerous but
be aware also that the European Union has just accepted a new bill too
making it more easy for EU countries to send back refugees. I've been
there, working at and for children at a refugee-camp in the Netherlands
and often it was heartbreaking!
Hijab enforcer attacks Armita Gevarnand
Iranwire - 20 Dec 2023
<<Iranian Journalist Masoumi Handed Prison Term over Tweet
Iranian authorities have sentenced journalist Sara Masoumi to six months
in prison and a two-year ban from practicing journalism for <publishing
false information.> The sentence was issued by Branch 26 of the
Revolutionary Court on December 20, Masoumi's legal representative, Ali
Mojtahedzadeh, told the Shargh newspaper. Mojtahedzadeh said that the
accusations against his client included <publishing a tweet about Armita
Geravand,> a 16-year-old girl who died in October after being assaulted
at a Tehran metro station for not wearing a mandatory headscarf. <Unlike
many journalists whose cases were transferred to the prosecutor's office
after the death of Armita Geravand, Masoumi's case was referred directly
to the Revolutionary Court,> Mojtahedzadeh said. Maryam Shokrani,
Shargh's economic editor, and Milad Alavi, a reporter at the same
newspaper, faced summons for publishing or republishing news from
domestic media concerning Geravand. According to the Committee to
Protect Journalists, a media freedom NGO, Iranian authorities have
arrested at least 95 journalists since September 2022, when the death in
police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini sparked nationwide protests.>>

<<Shiva Khalili, a Baha'i adherent residing in Babol (Mazandaran

the government.> Her cellphone was also seized under the category of

Iranwire - 20 Dec 2023
<<Iranian Police Officers Arrested in Protester Shooting Case
The lawyer for Pouriya Alipour, an Iranian protester who was badly
injured during nationwide protests last year, announced the arrest of
four police officers suspected in the case. Payam Derafshan told Emtedad
news website on December 19 that the arrests involved both low-ranking
field officers and senior commanders. <The individuals identified and
charged include the motorcycle driver who struck Mr. Alipour and the
officer who shot him in the face, along with two senior officials,>
Derafshan said. <The case has been transferred from the Supreme Court to
the Branch 11 of Tehran Military Prosecutor's Office.> The suspects are
accused of attempted murder, unauthorized use of firearms, assault with
intent to injure, and actions undermining public trust in security
forces. The September 2022 death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa
Amini triggered protests that spread across the country and rapidly
escalated into calls for the overthrow of the four-decade-old Islamic
theocracy in Iran. Authorities responded with a brutal crackdown in
which more than 500 people were killed and over 22,000 others were
unlawfully detained, including dozens of lawyers.
Following biased trials, the judiciary handed down stiff sentences,
including the death penalty, to protesters. At least eight of them have
been executed so far.>>

Poem in support of the 'Zan, Zendegi, Azadi' women
"Veiled in tears.
For the fallen and the jailed women for freedom
My workshop,
where I hide as a hermit,
a walkabout in a desert in search of
the brave who are hiding too
for the bloodhounds of the mullahs' regime,
the walls of my workshop
are more and more covered
with the faces of the fallen for freedom
and there's no hiding possible
and why should I?
The truth must be told
as I continue to report
even then when my eyes are veiled with tears.
But when the fallen look at me,
speak to me,
I hear their voices loud and clear:
'Revenge is not what we want
but the de-masking of the perpetrators,
the killers of children, innocently born,
and the innocent jailed
because they believe
in Freedom, Equality and Democracy
and for all people of al walks of life and beliefs.
So Gino dear, carry on
towards a long and free Iran.
Raise the Victory flag with us at the Azadi tower
because yes,
*Victory is not easy,
but it is certain*'
And by the way,
begone veil,
real men do cry!
and women don't need to hide!"
Look at them,
face to face
and see Freedom"
*Narges Mohammadi
