<<Journalist Sara Massoumi sentenced to 6 months for a tweet
Journalist Sara Massoumi was sentenced to six months imprisonment
by the 26th Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran. She was also
barred from journalistic activities for two years. Ms. Massoumi must
also pay a fine of 15 million Toumans in cash. The semi-official Sharq
newspaper cited Ali Mojtahedzadeh, Sara Massoumi's lawyer, as saying,
<The hearing convened at the 26th Branch of the Revolutionary Court
examined the charge of 'publishing context contrary to the truth.' > The
charge refers to a tweet about Armita Geravand, the teenage girl who
died after being attacked in a metro train by a Hijab Patrol.

tweet
The tweet reads, <They wrote you passed away. For years, we have
known the trace of blood and today, the city smells of the blood of the
innocent. By the way, did they show all the footage to your mother?>
<The tweet, however, did not contain any news and therefore could not be
contrary to the truth. The Judge's verdict also refers to the report of
law enforcement agents, but we did not see any reports,> Mr.
Mojtahedzadeh said. Sara Massoumi's lawyer noted that <if a journalist
is to endure such imprisonment for just one tweet, then we cannot
essentially talk about freedom of speech in this country.> (The
state-run Sharq daily, December 20, 2023)>>

<<Jailed Iranian Journalists Join Khatereh Hakimi in Singing
In a powerful act of defiance, Iranian singer Khatereh Hakimi has shared
a video of herself singing <Safarnak,> accompanied by three women
journalists imprisoned in Tehran's Evin prison. The video, which was
posted on social media, shows Hakimi playing the guitar and singing. The
journalists Nasim Sultanbeigi, Elahe Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi can
also be heard singing over the phone. The recording is interrupted by a
brief automated message saying, <This is a phone call from Evin Prison.>
Sultanbeigi, Mohammadi and Hamedi and among dozens of journalists
unlawfully jailed during nationwide protests sparked by the September
2022 death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody. Mohammadi and Hamedi

NCRI - Womens committee - 18 Dec 2023 - in Women's News
<<Kurdish Journalist Moved to Evin's Women's Ward from Ward 209
Kurdish journalist Pakhshan Azizi, a former political prisoner,
and Social Work graduate endured over four months of detainment in the
Intelligence Ministry's Ward 209 at Evin Prison. Her relocation to the
Women's Ward at Evin on Monday, December 11, 2023, marked a significant
shift after enduring extensive interrogation without legal counsel or
communication with her family. The recent transfer of the Kurdish
journalist Pakhshan Azizi follows her arrest on August 4, 2023, in
Shahrak-e Kharrazi, Tehran. This isn't her first encounter with
authorities; she was previously arrested on November 16, 2009, during a
Kurdish student protest at Tehran University, which was staged against
the execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan. Her prior arrest led
to her release on bail on March 19, 2010.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Elnaz Mohammadi <Forced to Resign>
Iranian journalist Elnaz Mohammadi says she was forced to resign
from Hammihan newspaper a month ago. <I was forced to leave the social
group [desk] that we formed with Elahe with great enthusiasm in July
last year,> Mohammadi wrote in a post on her Instagram on December 14.
In September, Elnaz Mohammadi received a three-year suspended prison
sentence for covering the monthslong <Woman, Life, Freedom> protests.
Her sister Elahe Mohammadi, who is also a journalist, is serving
a 12-year prison sentence in Tehran's Evin prison. <There are many
reasons behind my resignation, but it's better that I don't say. I don't
want to reveal more than that,> Mohammadi said. Dozens of journalists
were among more than 10,000 people unlawfully detained following the
eruption of nationwide protests last year. Many journalists have been
released on bail while awaiting trial or have been issued summonses to
serve multi-year sentences. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on
human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, has urged the Islamic Republic to
<stop the widespread persecution of human rights defenders and
journalists.> The Committee to Protect Journalists has said that the
Iranian authorities <must realize that jailing journalists and critical
voices won't help them in hiding Iran's difficult realities,> while
Reporters Without Borders accused the Islamic Republic of exacting its
<revenge against journalists who....have fulfilled their duties in
serving the public's right to news and information.> >>

<<CPJ Calls for Release of Jailed Iranian journalist Mir-Ghasemzadeh
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Iranian
authorities to immediately release from custody Mohammad Mir-Ghasemzadeh,
who was reporting on alleged official corruption. On November 27,
security agents with the Intelligence Ministry arrested Mir-Ghasemzadeh,
a journalist in the northern city of Someh Sara, and took him to a
detention center in Rasht, according to news reports and a source who
spoke to CPJ. As of November 30, authorities had not disclosed the
reason behind the arrest or any potential charges against Mir-Ghasemzadeh,
according to the New York-based media freedom watchdog.
The journalist was allegedly beaten in custody.
<Iranian authorities are desperate to silence their critics,>
said CPJ Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator Sherif Mansour.
<Authorities must realize that jailing journalists and critical voices
won’t help them in hiding Iran's difficult realities and release Mir-Ghasemzadeh
and all jailed journalists immediately,> he said. The New York-based
Independent Center on Human Rights in Iran reported that Mir-Ghasemzadeh
was recently working on a series of reports exposing the alleged
financial corruption of a parliament member from Gilan province. Mir-Ghasemzadeh's
arrest comes as Iranian authorities are ramping up pressure on
journalists across the country. Two journalists, Saeedeh Shafiei and
Nasim Sultanbeigi, went to Tehran's Evin prison earlier this month to
begin serving their sentences of three and a half years. <The Islamic
Republic continues to exact its revenge against journalists who....have
fulfilled their duties in serving the public's right to news and
information,> the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said on November
23.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Shokrani Faces New Legal Case
Maryam Shokrani, the economic editor of Iran's Shargh newspaper,
has announced that a new legal case was filed against her. Shokrani said
on Instagram on November 22 that the case was referred to Branch 1058 of
the Culture and Media Prosecutor's Office <without investigation.> The
journalist also said she hadn't been given a chance to present her
defense. This is the second case filed against Shokrani in recent weeks.
Shokrani announced earlier she had been summoned to Branch 16 of the
Tehran Culture and Media Prosecutor's Office, adding that she was
unaware of the complaint's subject matter. The cases were opened against
Shokrani amid a wider crackdown on journalists who have reported on the
death of Armita Geravand, a 16-year-old girl who was assaulted at a
Tehran metro station on October 1 for not wearing a headscarf. Armita
died after being in a coma for 28 days. Several other journalists have
also been summoned or arrested for their coverage of her death. They
include Sara Masoumi, Milad Alavi, and Omid Tosheh. Negar Ostad Agha, a
member of Etimad Online's editorial team, has been arrested for
attending Geravand's funeral.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Sultanbeigi Starts Prison Sentence
Nasim Sultanbeigi, a prominent Iranian women's rights activist
and journalist, entered Tehran's Evin prison on November 21 to start
serving a three-
and-a-half-year sentence, her lawyer says. Maryam Kian Ersi made
the announcement on the social media platform X, expressing concern
regarding the <adverse medical implications> of incarceration for
Sultanbeigi. <The authorities and those executing the punishment bear
the responsibility for my client's health,> she added. Sultanbeigi was
detained at Tehran's Khomeini International Airport in December 2022
while attempting to leave the country, and was temporarily released in
February pending the outcome of her trial. Sultanbeigi was sentenced to
three years and six months in prison on charges including assembly and
collusion, and propaganda activities against the system. The Court of
Appeals of Tehran province upheld the sentence, which led to her
incarceration. Sultanbeigi's case highlights the ongoing crackdown on
journalists and civil activists in Iran. On November 19, journalist
Saeedeh Shafiei was also taken to Evin prison to serve a prison sentence
of three years and a half.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Shafiei Starts Prison Sentence
Iranian journalist Saeideh Shafiei has started serving a prison
sentence of three years and a half at Tehran's Evin prison, her husband
says. In a post on the social media platform X on November 19, Hassan
Homayoun said that she is being punished for having written about
poverty and discrimination in Iran. He also expressed deep concern over
his wife's health. Shafiei disclosed on November 12 she had received a
summons from the Department of Law Enforcement which mandated her to
report to prison on November 13 to start serving her prison sentence.
But the journalist was told to leave when she handed herself over to the
Evin Prosecutor's Office on that day. On September 18, the Court of
Appeal for Tehran province upheld the prison terms issued to both
Shafiei and her fellow journalist Nasim Sultan Beigi. Shafiei, who is a

<<Two Journalists Among Iranian Women Arrested in Mass Raids
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Iranian authorities
to immediately release two journalists and environmental activists,
Nasim Tavafzadeh and Helaleh Nategheh, and stop trying to silence media
workers by jailing them. <It is vitally important for the Iranian people
to access truthful reporting on government policies, like the
environment,> Sherif Mansour, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa program
coordinator, said in a statement on November 14. Tavafzadeh, a social
activist, environmental advocate and the editor-in-chief of the news
website Moroor.org, as well as Nategheh, an environmental reporter for
the same media outlet, were arrested in the northern city of Rasht on
November 11 amid a widening government crackdown on dissent and the
media. The two journalists were apprehended by members of the Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps's (IRGC) Intelligence Organization and were
taken to an undisclosed location.
The authorities have not disclosed the reason for detaining them.
Tavafzadeh and Nategheh were among at least 20 women activists who were
detained and had their electronic devices confiscated in mass raids in
Rasht. Those detained also included two writers, Rosita Rajaei and Nina
Golestani, as well as the manager of a safehouse for animals, Anahita
Hejazi. <Iranian authorities must immediately and unconditionally
release the two female journalists and the many others arrested in Rasht
and realize that censoring the media does nothing to address the
challenges that the government is facing,> Mansour said.
Iran ranked as the world's worst jailer of journalists when CPJ
conducted its most recent census of imprisoned journalists worldwide on
December 1, 2022. Approximately 100 journalists were among more than
10,000 people unlawfully detained in the wake of nationwide protests
sparked by the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini while in police
custody for allegedly wearing a headscarf improperly. Many journalists
have been released on bail while awaiting trial or have been issued
summonses to serve multi-year sentences, CPJ said.>>

Maryam Amid-Semnani
Iranwire - July 27 2023 - by SHADYAR OMRANI
<<Iranian Influential Women: Mozayan ol-Saltaneh (1882-1919)
Maryam Amid-Semnani, known as Mozayan ol-Saltaneh, was an intellectual
and journalist living in early 20th-century Iran, a time when most women
either could not read or write or, if they could, they would hide it. It
was in this repressive atmosphere that Maryam Mozayan ol-Saltaneh first
attempted to open a girls' school and publish the second women's
newspaper in the country, becoming the first woman to head a national
publication. Even though Mozayan ol-Saltaneh's second venture was
short-lived, it had a transformative role in thinking of women and their
abilities.
---
... later, Maryam married a prominent intellectual, Ghavam ol-Hokama,
who died a few years later. As a result, Mozayan ol-Saltaneh raised
their two children on her own. Throughout these years and for the rest
of her life, she remained preoccupied with teaching and women’s
literacy.
A Women's Magazine <Blossoms>
In 1913, eight years after the first newspaper was published in Iran,
Mozayan ol-Saltaneh published a women's newspaper called Shokufeh
(<Blossom>), two years after the very first women's weekly, Danesh
(<Knowledge>), had been forced to shut down. Danesh was first launched
in 1910 by Masoumeh Kahal, a female eye doctor who had been trained in
medicine by American missionaries. The weekly was widely distributed in
Iran and other countries before it ended after 12 months. <The wind blew
bringing the scent of amber/ Almonds, bursting into blossoms> was the
legend below the logo of the newly published Shokufeh. <No country can
join the circle of civilization and progress except through newspapers,>
wrote Mozayan ol-Saltaneh in its first issue. <Newspapers challenge
thoughts, teach us speech and rhetoric and show us how to live, how to
earn money and wealth, how to learn manners and ethics and how to
socialize, communicate, gain knowledge, trade and cultivate. It is only
with the help of newspapers, published specifically for women and in a
language they are familiar with, that ideas and habits penetrate our
being to wake us from our deep slumber and the stupefying effects of the
opium of ignorance. God willing, with the help of this newspaper, we
shall rise above the humiliation of ignorance and sit on the throne of
knowledge, peace and comfort.> >>
