Execution Campaign Grows
Iranwire - July 23, 2024
<<Prisoner-Led Anti-Execution Campaign Grows Across Iranian Prisons
The 'No to Execution Tuesdays' campaign, a prisoner-led initiative
protesting capital punishment in Iran, has entered its 26th week with
growing support. The campaign has now expanded to include prisoners from
Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, and Salmas prisons, according to the
letter received by IranWire from inmates at Ghezel Hesar prison. The
expansion comes amid a sharp increase in death sentences and executions
across the Islamic Republic's prisons over the past few weeks. The
campaign, which began in February, aims to draw domestic and
international attention to what participants describe as a <gross
violation of the right to life> in Iran. In their letter, the
Ghezelhesar prisoners expressed alarm over the execution of more than 10
inmates last week, including two political prisoners. They wrote, <While
the government cannot respond to the rightful demands of the people, it
intends to create terror in society by killing and executing prisoners
on various charges, in order to create a roadblock against future
protests and uprisings of the oppressed people.> The campaign includes
participants from various prisons, including Evin, Ghezelhesar, Karaj
Central, Khorramabad, Tabriz, Khoi, Naqdeh, Mashhad, and Saqqez.
Campaigners are urging both political and non-political prisoners
nationwide to join their cause, aiming to elevate <No to Execution> to a
national demand.
The number of executions in Iran reached 853 in 2023, which is the
highest recorded since 2015 and marks a 48 per cent increase from 2022
in the aftermath of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The spike in
death penalties has continued into 2024, with at least 95 recorded
executions by March 20, according to Amnesty International.

Pakshan Azizi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 24 July 2024
<<Kurdish political prisoner, Pakhshan Azizi, sentenced to death
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish journalist, social worker, and political
prisoner currently imprisoned in Evin Prison, has been deprived of the
right to phone calls and family visits. She has been sentenced to death
by the Iranian Judiciary on charges of <rebellion.> According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan
Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Mahabad, has been sentenced to
death by Branch 26 of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran,
presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. She was convicted of <rebellion> on
the charge of <Membership in groups that waged an armed uprising against
the Islamic government, whose leaders are involved in rebellion.>
Additionally, she received a four-year prison sentence on the charge of
being a member of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK). Her case
hearings were held on May 28 and June 16, 2024. The mentioned verdict
was notified to her lawyers on Tuesday, July 22, 2024. The death
sentence for Pakhshan Azizi was issued amid her prolonged deprivation of
legal representation and family visits. Additionally, her case
proceedings have been conducted through opaque and unjust processes.
Hengaw recently published a letter from Pakhshan Azizi in which she
reported being subjected to multiple instances of torture and
harassment. Additionally, she has been denied the right to visit or call
her family for the past two weeks. On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi was
arrested by Iranian Intelligence Forces in the Kharazi town of Tehran.
On December 11, 2023, she was transferred from Ward 209 of Evin Prison,
which is known as the Ministry of Intelligence's detention center, to
the women's ward of the same prison. Previously, Hengaw, citing
politically informed sources, reported that several members of Pakhshan
Azizi's family were arrested alongside her but were released after a few
days. It is worth noting that Pakhshan Azizi was arrested on November
16, 2009, during a protest by Kurdish students in Tehran against the
executions of prisoners in Kurdistan. She was subsequently released on
March 19, 2010, after four months in detention, upon posting bail of 100
million Tomans.
Subsequently, Pakhshan Azizi left Iran due to pressure and threats from
Iranian security institutions. During her research on the situation of
women in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, she engaged in social
work to improve their conditions.>>

<<Special interrogation team attempt to obtain forced confession from
Sharifeh Mohammadi
The Iranian Ministry of Intelligence has reportedly dispatched a special
interrogation team to Lakan Prison in Rasht to obtain a forced
confession from labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi to justify the death
sentence against her.
News Center- The Iranian Ministry of Intelligence has dispatched a
special interrogation team consisting of three persons to Lakan Prison
in Rasht to obtain a forced confession from labor activist Sharifeh
Mohammadi due to international outrage against the death sentence.
Activists all around the world have expressed their support to the
"Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi", demanding the death sentence
against Sharifeh Mohammadi be reversed and her unconditional release. In
recent days, three investigators and special observers from the Iranian
Ministry of Intelligence have been dispatched from Tehran to Lakan
Prison in Rasht to fabricate a case against Sharifeh Mohammadi, based on
obtaining a forced confession, the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights
reported on Sunday. <The Islamic Republic of Iran tries to show all
international organizations and unions, which support Sharifa Mohamedi,
that the death sentence given to this labor activist is fair by
obtaining a forced confession,> the Campaign to Defend Sharifeh
Mohammadi said in a statement. <The authorities of the Islamic Republic
of Iran try to justify the death sentence with baseless and threadbare
accusations. Sharifeh Mohammadi has been tortured to obtain a forced
confession by a special interrogation team. Despite the torture and
inhuman conditions, she keeps resisting. During the interrogation,
Sharifeh Mohammadi denied being a member of any political, armed or
unarmed groups. Her lawyer has already appealed to the Supreme Court of
Iran to overturn the decision. However, the latest developments show
that the Islamic Republic of Iran insists on the execution of this
political prisoner.> >>

Iranwire - July 22, 2024
<<Exclusive: Iran's Secret Campaign to Whitewash Raisi's Legacy
A confidential document from Iran's cabinet, obtained by IranWire,
reveals a concerted effort to promote the legacy of former President
Ebrahim Raisi before the recent election. The document, signed by Sajad
Mirshojaei, Director General of the Government, calls for an extensive
propaganda campaign to highlight the <jihadi achievements and actions>
of Raisi's administration, which ended after he died in a helicopter
crash in May. The directive was sent to government offices across the
country two days before the first round of the presidential elections on
June 28. It appears to be a calculated move to influence public opinion
and shape the narrative around Raisi's tenure as the country prepared to
choose a new president. The 86-page report, prepared by the Office of
the Government Board and Cooperation of Executive Bodies, paints a rosy
picture of Raisi's three-year presidency. It claims unprecedented levels
of people's satisfaction with his administration and touts supposed
improvements across political, economic, and social indicators. However,
these claims starkly contrast with independent assessments of Iran's
economic situation under Raisi.
Among the most striking assertions in the report is the claim that
Iran's economic growth rate surged from a negative 2.5 percent at the
end of Hassan Rouhani's presidency to a positive 5.5 percent under Raisi
- an alleged eight percentage point rise over just three years. The
document also boasts of a 12 percent rise in foreign investment, a
figure that seems highly improbable given the extensive US sanctions and
near-complete suspension of trade relations with Europe during this
period. Perhaps most notably, the report claims a 14 percent decrease in
currency rates, particularly concerning the US dollar. However, this
assertion is easily contradicted by publicly available data showing that
the value of the US dollar against the Iranian rial more than doubled
during Raisi's presidency, rising from around 28,000 tomans to over
57,000 tomans. Mostafa Pourmohammadi, a former ally of Raisi and fellow
member of the controversial <Death Committee> that executed thousands of
political prisoners in 1988, stated during his campaign that if Raisi
were alive, he would not have continued on the same path. The push to
glorify Raisi's legacy comes against a backdrop of significant economic
hardship for many Iranians. Independent non-governmental statistics
paint a grim picture, indicating that during Raisi's presidency,
unemployment and inflation led to an unprecedented increase in poverty
levels, with an additional 30 percent of Iran's population falling below
the poverty line. The document instructs government officials and
governors to focus on specific talking points when discussing Raisi's
presidency. These include portraying him as a <man of the people,>
praising his efforts to break monopolies in senior management circles,
touting supposed successes in currency management and health
infrastructure development, and highlighting claims of reduced
unemployment and increased foreign investment. Iran's Supreme Leader,
Ali Khamenei, had previously praised Raisi's performance, suggesting his
accomplishments had not been sufficiently publicized. The new propaganda
push appears as a direct response to Khamenei's comments, aiming to
cement a positive legacy for Raisi as the country moves forward under a
new president.>>

Sepideh Rashno
Iranwire - July 24, 2024
<<Anti-Hijab Activist in Iran Summoned to Serve Sentence
Iranian authorities have summoned Sepideh Rashno, a 30-year-old writer,
student, and activist against the mandatory hijab, to begin serving her
sentence at Evin Prison. Rashno's brother, Saman, revealed on social
media that since March 10, his sister has received multiple notices to
hand herself to prison. The family and Rashno's lawyer had been working
to delay the execution of the sentence, hoping for a favorable ruling
from the Supreme Court in a second case against her. While the Supreme
Court converted the second case's prison sentence to a fine, it did not
change the underlying charge. As a result, a suspended sentence from a
previous case will now be executed. Rashno was arrested in July 2022
after she was filmed arguing with a woman on a bus over the mandatory
headscarf. Two weeks later, state TV aired a program showing her giving
a forced confession while signs of beatings were visible even on her
face. In June last year, she announced that she had been released on
bail after being summoned again by the authorities, but was <banned from
leaving Tehran.> Previously, she had reported that Al-Zahra University
had banned her from studying for two semesters due to the
<non-observance of Islamic clothing.> All women in Iran are mandated to
conceal their hair with a hijab while in public and wear loose-fitting
trousers under their coats. She was subsequently arrested for allegedly
<insulting and assaulting the religious vigilante> and received a
suspended sentence of three years and seven months in December 2022. A
second case was brought against Rashno in May 2023 due to her choice of
attire when appearing in court. Initially sentenced to six months in
prison, a fine, and additional punishments, an appeals court reduced
this to four months. She now has to serve this sentence.>>

Hamidreza Sahlabad
Iranwire - July 24, 2024
<<Political Prisoner Attempts Suicide in Tehran Prison
Hamidreza Sahlabadi, a political prisoner held in Tehran's Evin Prison,
attempted suicide just days before his scheduled court appearance.
According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Sahlabadi
was transferred to Loghman Hospital at 5 AM on Saturday and is currently
in the intensive care unit. Authorities have reportedly prevented his
family from visiting him, escalating concerns about his condition. His
suicide attempt is believed to be a protest against his summons to
appear at Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran on July 27.
Sahlabadi was arrested on July 3, 2023, by intelligence agents of the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and has been held in Ward 4 of
Evin Prison. The political prisoner is facing multiple charges,
including <assembly and collusion to commit a crime against national
security,> <disruption of public order,> <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic,> <destruction of public property,> <armed rebellion,> and
<membership in a rebellious group.> These charges were heard in a court
session on June 30, which was presided over by Judge Iman Afshari.
Previously, in August 2023, Sahlabadi was sentenced to two years in
prison for <destruction of public property,> a verdict upheld by the
Tehran Province Court of Appeals in December of the same year.>>

NCRI - Womens committee - 23 July 2024 - in Women's News
<<Three Baluch Women Executed in Birjand Central Prison
Three Baluch women were among seven prisoners executed at dawn on
Tuesday, July 23, 2024, in Birjand Central Prison, located in South
Khorasan Province. The identities of these three Baluch women, who were
arrested and executed on drug-related charges, have not yet been
confirmed. As of the release of this news, these executions have not
been reported by the state-run media in Iran. On Saturday, July 20,
another woman with the surname 'Mahmoudinia' was executed at Adelabad
Central Prison in Shiraz along with three other prisoners. She, a victim
of forced marriage, was sentenced to death for the murder of a man whom
she had been forcibly married to. With the execution of the three Baluch
women in Birjand Central Prison, the number of women executed in 2024
has reached 14. According to statistics compiled by the Women’s
Committee of the National Council of Resistance since 2007, at least 243
women have been executed in Iran. By executing four women within four
days, the regime's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has surpassed Raisi,
who executed three women within three days in May.
Record holder of executions of women
The Iranian regime is the world's top record holder of executions of
women.
No government in the world has executed so many women. The list does not
account for the tens of thousands of women executed in Iran on political
grounds. The NCRI Women's Committee previously mentioned that many of
the women executed by the mullahs' regime are themselves victims of
domestic violence against women and have acted in self-defense. An
average of 15 women were executed every year under the former government
in Iran. However, 26 women were executed under Raisi government in 2023,
which is 11 more than the previous average. The NCRI Women's Committee
calls on the United Nations, the European Union, and other relevant
international organizations to take urgent action to save the lives of
those on death row and stop the use of death penalty in Iran.>>

<<A Legacy of Advocacy and Justice: Remembering Congresswoman Sheila
Jackson Lee (1950-2024)
The Iranian people and Resistance have lost a passionate defender
................
Advocacy for the Iranian Resistance
In addition to her national accomplishments, she was a dedicated
supporter of the Iranian Resistance and the PMOI members in Ashraf. As
co-Chair of the Iranian Women Caucus in Congress, she was instrumental
in co-sponsoring numerous resolutions on human rights for the Iranian
people. Her commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of the
Iranian people, especially the women of the Iranian Resistance, was
unwavering. She stood against the clerical regime and policies of
appeasement, advocating for justice and democratic principles. At the
Free Iran World Summit in 2021, she proudly declared her support for
removing unjust labels from the Iranian Resistance and ensuring the
world knew the story of the freedom fighters in Iran.
Speech at the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was the co-chair of the Iranian Women
Congressional Caucus at the US House of Representatives. In part of her
remarks at the first meeting of this caucus on May 18, 2023, she said:
<As founding co-chair of the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus, I’m
honored to be here today to hold the first joint meeting of the newly
formed Iranian (Women) Congressional Caucus and pleased to hear with the
Iran Human Rights and Democracy Caucus on the situation of women and
human rights in Iran, and what Congress can do to help the Iranian
people achieve their freedom. Last month, I introduced H. Res. 310, a
bipartisan resolution, condemning the inaction by the Islamic Republic
of Iran in addressing the poisoning of Iranian school girls, the
daughters of the Iranian revolution. This resolution recognizes the
bravery and resilience of women who have faced tremendous challenges in
their fight for equality and human rights. We have all witnessed the
courage of women and youth leading the 2022 protest in Iran, calling for
social freedom and political change. All they ask for is a moment of
freedom, dignity, and respect. And they got death, poisoning. As stated
in the resolution, these protests, for more than four decades, of
organized resistance against the Iranian dictatorship led by women who
have endured torture, sexual and gender-based evidence, and death. As a
long-time advocate for justice and equality, I’m inspired by the ongoing
revolution led by Iranian women. And I cannot say more about all of you
who have come to know over 25 years and never given up. As our famous
civil rights and Congressman said, never giving in and never giving up.
Continuing to have the spirit of fight and remembering those who cannot
speak for themselves. That is why we're here. To speak for those who
cannot speak for themselves.>

Iranwire - July 22, 2024
<<Baha'i Scholar Depicts Harsh Realities of Iran Prison
In a letter from Evin Prison, Keyvan Rahimian, a Baha'i psychologist,
has painted a stark picture of life in confinement and challenged the
Iranian government's treatment of its citizens. The letter, Rahimian's
third correspondence from behind bars, examines individual and social
freedoms in Iran and the country's economic hardships. Rahimian's latest
letter raises questions about the potential for change in Iran. He asks
whether the election of the new president could lead to a
reconsideration of the government's treatment of its citizens and if all
Iranians could enjoy equal citizenship rights without discrimination.
Rahimian, a professor at the Baha'i Virtual University of Iran, has a
history of arrests and imprisonments.
The following is his letter:
"It has been a year since I was arrested and imprisoned in Evin, a year
that has been very difficult for me and my family. Reflecting on the
past 365 days, I recall the 45 days I spent in solitary confinement, the
50 days my family and I did not know each other's whereabouts, the
unforeseen challenges faced by Zhina (my daughter) and Ehsan, the
worsening of my mother's illness leading to her death, my trial, and
ultimately, the sentence: nine years of imprisonment, six years of
deprivation of social rights, and a fine of 50 million tomans; only five
years of imprisonment is applicable. Life in prison has become
increasingly challenging with the rise in the number of inmates. For
instance, family visits, which used to occur once every five weeks, now
happen once every two months or more. Even basic needs like using the
toilet have become a struggle, with 110 people having access to only
five toilets (one of which has been broken for two weeks). The quality
of government-provided food has deteriorated, for example, for ghee
stew, six chickens are allocated to our ward of about 200 people, and
for ragu, consisting of a few carrots and potatoes, only two chickens
are provided for the same number of people. Over this past year, the
conditions for me and other prisoners, as well as for social activists
outside the prison - both Baha'i and non-Baha'i - have not improved.
Violations of individual and social liberties, discrimination, and
numerous social and economic problems continue to afflict society. With
the recent changes in the executive branch, I question whether the
government can reconsider its treatment of all members of society,
including men, women, minorities, and the ethnic, religious, and
political majority. Is it possible for all people to enjoy equal
citizenship rights without discrimination? Can individual and social
freedoms become a reality for everyone? From my 45 years of experience,
I am unfortunately pessimistic about the answer to these questions.
However, I sincerely hope and wish for such an event to occur, where all
of us, regardless of our beliefs, race, and ethnicity, work together for
the development and welfare of our country, and see freedom, comfort,
prosperity, and peaceful coexistence in our lives and our children's
lives. A sociologist, whose name I cannot recall, once said: <Hope
always triumphs over experience.> Another question I ask myself is what
I can do or need to do to fulfill these hopes and wishes, given my
current condition in prison. I believe this is a good question for
everyone to ask themselves in any position or situation. Perhaps our
individual answers, tailored to our unique conditions and capabilities,
can spark a small movement that leads to social change. As a friend once
said, <Small steps lead to big achievements,> or as Abu Saeed Abulkhair
put it, <Everyone can take one step forward from wherever they are.>
First and foremost, I must answer this question for myself because I
believe that change starts with me. I hope that this hope will ignite a
movement within me and others." >>
