to avoid too many pop-ups ,meaning the underlined period
in yellow tells you in what period you are and click on another
underlinded period to go there. However, when needed a certain
topic will be in yellow meaning it's a link to go that topic and
will open in a new window. If you dissagree about any change feel more than free to let me know what you
think at

This does not count for the above topics which, when
clicked on, will still appear in a pop-up window and for now the
'old' lay-out 'till I worked that all out. Thank you. Gino

<<Till Death Do Us Part: The Deadly Cost of Divorce for Iranian Women
Marzieh Gholampour, a woman seeking escape from an unhappy marriage,
paid the ultimate price for her desire for freedom. On July 6, her life
was cut short by her husband's gunshots, a scene witnessed by their
child. The incident is part of a trend in Iran, where women's lives are
at risk for wanting to end their marriages. One of the relatives of
Marzieh, from Bojnord, Khorasan, reports that she was shot dead by her
husband. Marzieh is one of many women who have lost their lives in the
past four months for not wanting to continue living with their husbands
and for using the legal channels available in the judicial system of the
Islamic Republic for separation and divorce. These murders often occur
through gunshots and other violent methods. On June 22, news reached
IranWire about the murder of a young woman named Neda Amiri, an
audiologist in Khorramabad.
Eyewitnesses recounted that while she was working in her office, she was
killed by her ex-husband in the middle of the day with eight bullets.
Some local sources attributed the issue to a financial dispute, but a
family member of Neda told IranWire: <Neda had a good financial
situation and was very diligent and hardworking. <Her ex-husband, who
had a bachelor's degree in language, was working until the COVID-19
pandemic, but after the closure of public centers, he did nothing. <Neda
was tired of this situation. She gave away her dowry and, in exchange
for custody of her child, paid one billion tomans [$17,200] to her
ex-husband and got a divorce. <Her ex-husband started threatening and
blackmailing her three months ago, demanding more money and threatening
to kill her if she did not comply.> According to the informed source,
after consulting her lawyer, Neda Amiri sued her ex-husband for
threatening to kill her and refused to pay him. <Unfortunately, due to
the ineffectiveness of existing laws in addressing violence against
women and protecting women under threat, necessary follow-up was not
done, and her ex-husband killed her in a heinous way.>
Neda Amiri and her husband had an eight-year-old daughter named Mahak. A
source close to Neda's family said: <He didn't even spare the little
girl.
Those who knew these two people are still in shock. Mrs. Amiri was one
of the hardworking members of the medical staff in Khorramabad.>
In response to the question of why men in societies like Iran do not
accept a woman's request for divorce and are even ready to take her life
over it, Marzieh Mohebi, a jurist and lawyer, told IranWire:
<In the Islamic Republic, based on the prevailing ideological system and
laws, women are seen as part of a man's property. The woman's body is
defined as an instrument for satisfying a man's lust. This deeply
ingrained misogyny is further intensified by the existing ideological
order, which justifies and perpetuates such views in public opinion.
Thus, when a woman requests a divorce, it is perceived as an attempt to
free herself from the man's property, prompting the man to defend what
he sees as his possession, sometimes even to the point of killing the
woman.>
Mohebi, founder and director of the non-profit organization <Sora Women
Lawyers' Center,> provided free legal representation for women
experiencing violence in Razavi Khorasan before leaving Iran. She also
noted the widespread use of drugs by men as another reason for the
murder of women during separation or after a divorce decree is issued.
<These drugs lead to severe suspicions and strange paranoia in men,
which is evident in most cases of domestic violence, including the
murder of women. However, this issue, like many others, is obscured by
the ruling system in Iran.>
According to Mohebi, the Islamic Republic hides the roots of violence to
blame women for these issues. <You would not believe it if I told you
that when a woman's murder case is opened, the first questions from
investigators and crime scene experts are often about whether the
husband doubted his wife or if the woman had any relationships outside
her marriage. The government's and legislator's assumption is always
that the woman was at fault. Similarly, when a woman seeks a divorce,
the answer is often that she wanted to avoid family life, was influenced
by foreign media, or did not want to fulfil her role as a mother.>
On June 23, Narmin Pirhaman, a mother of two from Chamsoo village in
Sanandaj, was killed by her husband Heshmat Kalaei with multiple stab
wounds in front of the divorce office. According to the human rights
organization Hengaw, Narmin had left their shared house a few months
prior due to domestic violence and numerous problems with her husband.
On the day of the incident, her husband lured her to the office under
the pretence of giving consent for the divorce and killed her with 20
stabs. In May, IranWire reported another case where a 31-year-old woman
named Hajar, the mother of two children aged 6 and 13, was killed by her
brother in Iranshahr of Sistan and Baluchistan province, for <honor>
motives. Hajar had separated from her drug-addicted husband and returned
to her father's house. However, her brother considered her divorce
disgraceful and constantly fought with her over it. Eventually, Hajar's
brother shot her in the head with two bullets and reported his actions
to the police. President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian promised during his
campaign to promote gender equality from childhood. He also vowed to
pursue the women's security bill in the parliament and to remove the
second-class view of women in government posts and positions. Marzieh
Mohebi emphasizes that the government itself perpetuates violence
against women. <In the Islamic Republic, a woman's body is not
respected. Women are dragged to the ground in the streets because their
hair is visible, their clothes are torn, they are beaten, and they are
thrown into unmarked cars with blankets. This conveys to the patriarchal
system that a woman's body has no respect, and it is acceptable to hit
and kill if it rejects male authority.> Mohebi argues that family laws
in the Islamic Republic have strong anti-feminist dimensions. <Even a
small percentage of equality and gender justice is not included in these
laws. In matters of divorce, men have the exclusive right to divorce
women whenever they want. <But when a woman asks for a divorce, she
steps into the realm of men's rights, which displeases the legislator.>
