Women set on fire
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 22 August 2024
<<Report of a Woman Set on Fire by Her Husband in Shiraz
A woman was set on fire by her husband in Shiraz, with the incident
being reported by government media as a result of so-called <family
disputes,> a label commonly used in cases of femicide. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Monday,
August 12, 2024, a 48-year-old man set fire to his wife and her father
in a neighborhood in Shiraz. In this tragic incident, his wife and two
of her sisters lost their lives, while her father was also injured. The
official site of the Young Journalists Club reported that the killer,
who was arrested shortly after the incident, went to his wife's family
home on the day of the attack and set them on fire by pouring gasoline.
The motive for this heinous crime is being attributed to <family
disputes.> >>

Iran Blocks Families from Memorial
Iranwire - August 23, 2024
<<Iran Blocks Families from Memorial at 1988 Mass Grave Site
Iran's police force has stopped dozens of families from visiting the
Khavaran cemetery in Tehran to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the
mass execution of political prisoners in the summer of 1988. Reports
from social media indicate that police blocked access to the site,
preventing families from reaching the graves of their loved ones.
According to sources, an estimated 70 to 80 family members arrived at
Khavaran only to find the gates closed and police personnel deployed
there. In response, the families placed bouquets and photo frames of the
executed people at the cemetery entrance. They also sang the "Khavaran
memory" to honor the memory of those executed. Khavaran cemetery is
adjacent to several burial grounds for religious minorities. It is
believed to be the site of mass graves where thousands of political and
ideological prisoners were secretly buried after being executed in
Tehran prisons during the summer of 1988. In his last report, Javaid
Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in
Iran, emphasized that the actions of the Islamic Republic in the 1980s
amounted to "genocide" and "crimes against humanity." "The Iranian
regime and its leaders should not be allowed to escape the consequences
of their crimes against humanity and genocide," he said.>>

<<Iran Arrests Nurses Amid Healthcare Workers' Strike
Iranian security forces have arrested several nurses at a hospital in
Tehran amid ongoing nationwide strikes by healthcare workers. According
to the human rights website Hengaw, nurse Zahra Tamandon was taken into
custody on Wednesday, along with several other nurses whose identities
remain unconfirmed. A source suggested that these arrests were likely
connected to their recent participation in nurses' strikes across the
country.
The healthcare sector in Iran has been in turmoil for the past 17 days,
with strikes affecting around 50 hospitals and medical centers across
seven provinces. On Wednesday, nurses and medical staff held rallies in
front of the Ministry of Health building in Tehran, as well as in the
cities of Marivan, Ahvaz, and Isfahan. The protesters are voicing
concerns over low pay, lack of job security, and poor prospects that
have driven many healthcare workers to leave the country.>>

<<Elham Ostadi, a Baloch Woman Activist, Sentenced to One Year in Prison
Elham Ostadi, a Baloch woman activist who was detained for two weeks
last summer in Chabahar by security forces, has been sentenced to one
year of imprisonment by the Iranian judiciary. According to a report
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Tuesday, August
20, 2024, Elham Ostadi, a 30-year-old Baloch woman activist from
Iranshahr, was sentenced to one year in prison by Branch 2 of the
Zahedan Revolutionary Court on the charge of <propaganda against the
government.> Informed sources stated that Elham Ostadi was violently
arrested by Iranian security forces in Chabahar on August 22, 2023, and
was temporarily released on bail of 200 million tomans after 12 days, on
September 2 of the same year.
Her arrest was carried out following a post on Instagram concerning an
assault by Colonel Ebrahim Kuchakzai, the Chabahar police chief.>>

Elham Ostadi
Iranwire - August 23, 2024
<<Iran Court Sentences Protester to One Year in Prison for <Propaganda>
An Iranian woman protester from southeastern Iranshahr has been
sentenced to one year in prison by the Zahedan Revolutionary Court on
propaganda charges. Elham Ostadi, 30, received her sentencing on
Tuesday. The verdict stems from charges of <propaganda against the
Islamic Republic> related to her social media activity during the 2022
protests in Sistan and Baluchistan. According to reports, Ostadi was
arrested by security forces without a court order in August last year in
Chabahar. Despite not being physically present at street demonstrations,
she was targeted for her online support of the peaceful protests.
Following her arrest, Ostadi was transferred to Zahedan Central Prison
and held in solitary confinement for ten days. She was later released on
bail. Security forces killed at least 108 protesters, bystanders, and
worshippers, including children, in the capital of southeastern Sistan
and Baluchistan province on September 30, 2022, according to local human
rights groups. The victims included a two-year-old toddler and an
88-year-old woman. The unrest erupted two weeks into the 2022 protests
demanding fundamental changes in the country, but its trigger was
accusations that a police officer in the province had raped a
15-year-old girl.>>

Mohammad Rasoulof
Iranwire - August 23, 2024
<<Germany Nominates Exiled Iranian Director's Film for Oscar
Germany has chosen the film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, directed by
Iranian dissident filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, as its entry for the 2025
Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category. It marks the
first time an Iranian film has been submitted by Germany for Oscar
consideration. Rasoulof qualified for the selection because the film is
an Iranian-French-German co-production and because he is now a German
resident. The director fled Iran earlier this year to avoid an
eight-year prison sentence. He was sentenced for his public statements
and for making films and documentaries, which, in the court's opinion,
were <examples of collusion with the intention of committing a crime
against the country's security.> The Seed of the Sacred Fig, which won a
special jury prize at Cannes, has been banned in Iran. Rasoulof's films
are celebrated alongside those of fellow countrymen Abbas Kiarostami,
Asghar Farhadi, and Jafar Panahi, earning critical acclaim beyond Iran's
borders. Among them, Panahi has endured the most consistent persecution
by the Iranian state, enduring multiple imprisonments and house
arrests.>>

2019 Protests
Iranwire - August 22 , 2024
<<89 Iranians Charged Five Years After 2019 Protests
89 residents of Iran's Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province have been
charged for their alleged involvement in the November 2019 protests.
Branch 1 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in Likak
City has brought charges against these individuals five years after they
were released on bail. The accusations include <disturbing public
order,> <destruction,> and <arson of public and government property.>
The charges relate to their participation in the widespread protests
that swept across Iran in November 2019. The judge has cited multiple
pieces of alleged evidence to support the charges. These include video
reports from law enforcement agencies, documents from the Ministry of
Intelligence's office, and confessions from the accused, according to
the HRANA human rights organization. The November 2019 protests were
triggered by a sudden and significant increase in petrol prices. The
demonstrations quickly spread across the country, with protesters taking
to the streets in numerous cities. The authorities severely suppressed
the protests.>>

Ban by Iranian Judiciary
Iman Dastyar, a physician and civil activist from Yasuj and one of those
arrested during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, has been sentenced
by the Iranian judiciary to two years of imprisonment and a travel ban.

capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, and former secretary of
the Islamic Students' Association at Shiraz University of Medical
Sciences, was recently sentenced by Branch 110 of the Second Criminal

computer systems with the intent to disturb public opinion.>

hijab-burka terror
Iranwire - August 21, 2024
<<Mother Reveals Iranian Teen's Violent Assault Over Hijab
The mother of a teenage Iranian girl who was severely beaten for not
wearing her headscarf has said her daughter was deeply traumatized by
the incident. The 14-year-old Nafas Haji Sharif was beaten up by Iran's
notorious Morality Police tasked with enforcing strict dress codes on
women. The teenager's mother, Maryam Abbasi, recounted the incident
saying, "The officers blocked my daughter's mouth and nose and she could
not breathe. A passerby shouted, 'Lady, leave her for God's sake, she is
just a child.' It was only then that the officer removed her hand and my
daughter was able to breathe again." Abbasi emphasized her concern: "I
never wanted my child to lose trust in people around her. How can I ask
her to wear her hijab now, with so much anger in her heart?" Speaking to
Hammihan newspaper, Abbasi described her daughter's ongoing fear and
anxiety after the incident. "She keeps replaying that day in her mind.
When we came home, I saw the extent of her injuries. "Even now, she
checks the camera behind the apartment door every morning, afraid that
the agents have returned. "The agents had threatened her, saying they
would imprison her, and that fear remains. "I want to ask those agents,
how could they do this? I still can't believe they treated a child this
way." Persian-speaking social media users have expressed anger and
dismay over the treatment of the teenager. Many called on President
Masoud Pezeshkian to honor his campaign pledges to end such
confrontations. During his presidential campaign, Pezeshkian repeatedly
criticized the Morality Police and its treatment of Iranian women and
girls for not adhering to mandatory hijab laws. Since April 13, Iran's
law enforcement agencies have intensified the enforcement of hijab
regulations under the national action plan "Noor." Across Iran, there
have been numerous reports of women being arrested and subjected to the
use of force due to perceived violations of dress codes. Users across
social networks are participating in a spontaneous campaign using the
hashtag "war against women" to document their experiences and
observations regarding the government's crackdown on the opponents of
mandatory hijab.

Arshia Rouhani, Hamid Monzavi, and Arash Nabavi
Iranwire - August 21, 2024
<<Iran Court Sentences Three Baha'i Citizens to Prison
An appeals court in Iran's central Isfahan province has sentenced three
Baha'i citizens to prison terms and additional penalties amid an ongoing
persecution of religious minorities in the country. Arshia Rouhani,
Hamid Monzavi, and Arash Nabavi, all residents of Isfahan, have been
sentenced to two years in prison each by Branch 37 of the Isfahan
Appeals Court. In addition to the prison terms, each defendant faces a
fine of 24 million tomans ($400), a two-year ban on leaving the country,
and restrictions on online activities for the same period. This ruling
significantly reduces earlier, harsher sentences handed down by the
Isfahan Revolutionary Court. Previously, Rouhani and Monzavi had been
sentenced to five years in prison each, along with fines and asset
confiscation. Nabavi had received an even more severe sentence of ten
years. Arash Nabavi, 38, was initially arrested in August 2023 and held
for two months before being released on bail, according to Human Rights
Activists News Agency (HRANA). In September 2023, businesses owned by
Rouhani and Monzavi were temporarily sealed by the Ministry of
Intelligence, only to be reopened a month later. Subsequently, on
October 30, 2023, both men were summoned and arrested by the Isfahan
Public Prosecutor's Office. Baha'is have been systematically persecuted
in Iran for 44 years because of their faith and are often accused of
being spies or opposed to the Iranian government. The Baha'i
International Community notes that generally no evidence is provided to
demonstrate these charges. The Iranian government has intensified its
crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on
spurious charges over the past year, as well as denying access to higher
education and livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying personal
properties.>>
