Sharifeh Mohammadi and journalist Pakhshan Azizi
Jinha - Womens News Agency 20 August 2024 - by HESNA MIHEMED
<<Women journalists: We will raise our voice against executions
"We will raise our voice against executions," said women journalists of
Afrin and Shahba, condemning the death sentences against labor activist
Sharifeh Mohammadi and journalist Pakhshan Azizi in Iran.
Shahba- Since the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising that sparked in Iran and
Eastern Kurdistan following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini, the Iranian
regime has intensified its oppressive policies against women, sentencing
labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi to death on July 4, and journalist
Pakhshan Azizi on July 23. Women journalists and activists in North and
East Syria have already expressed their reactions to the death
sentences. On August 12, 2024, the Women's Press Union (YRJ), a women
journalists’ organization based in northeastern Syria, started a
petition against the death sentences given to labor activist Sharifeh
Mohammadi and journalist Pakhshan Azizi by the Iranian regime. NuJINHA
spoke to Sîdra Memo and Zana Roj, two journalists based in northeastern
Syria.
"We condemn the death sentence against two women in Iran," said Sidra
Memo, reporter of Jin TV. "In many countries, women journalists are
prevented and banned from doing their profession because they reveal the
truth. The misogynist policies of the Iranian regime target women. Since
the beginning of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising, women in Iran and
Eastern Kurdistan have taken to the streets to protest the patriarchal
mindset. The Iranian regime has arrested thousands of women demanding
freedom and sentenced them to death by violating all international
conventions."
'We will be the voice of all women'
Mentioning the petition started by the YRJ, Sidra Memo said, "The
petition started by the YRJ will make the voices of women in Iran heard
all around the world. As women journalists of Afrin and Shahba, we
support the petition and we will raise our voice against the executions.
The death sentences given to Sharifeh and Pakhshan Azizi are actually
given to all women. As women journalists, we will be the voice of all
women struggling against the patriarchal mindset."
'The death sentences are against all women'
"A policy of violence and oppression has been carried out against women
in Iran," said Zana Roj, reporter of Ronahi newspaper. "Such policies
are the policies of the patriarchal mindset. The Iranian regime has
carried out an oppressive policy against women activists, protesters
since the beginning of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising. In July 2024,
Iran sentenced two women to death. The death penalty should be abolished
not only in Iran but also all around the world because it violates the
right to life. The death sentences against two women are also against
all women." >>

Human Rights Watch
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 August 2024
<<At least 87 people executed in Iran after presidential
elections in June
Iranian authorities have reportedly executed at least 87 people
in the month after the presidential elections in late June 2024, Human
Rights Watch said on Tuesday.
News Center- Iranian authorities have reportedly executed at
least 87 people in the month after presidential elections in late June
2024, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Tuesday, stressing that the
Iranian government has long made extensive use of the death penalty,
including in response to protests in which those prosecuted and executed
were exercising their fundamental rights to free expression and peaceful
assembly.
In addition to the spate of post-election executions, on the
morning of August 7, the authorities carried out mass executions of 29
prisoners at two prisons, according to the Iran Human Rights, a
non-governmental group. 26 people were executed at Ghezel Hesar Prison
and three people at Karaj Central Prison. Those executed included 17
people sentenced for <premeditated murder,> seven convicted on
drug-related charges, and two Afghan nationals sentenced for <rape.>
"Human Rights Watch has for many years documented serious due
process violations and unfair trials in Iranian courts."
"The Iranian authorities are carrying out an egregious execution
spree while trumpeting their recent presidential elections as evidence
of genuine change," said Nahid Naghshbandi, acting Iran researcher at
Human Rights Watch. "For those campaign slogans to be meaningful, Iran's
new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, should urgently intervene to overturn
existing death sentences, place a moratorium on capital punishment, and
take steps to reform the judiciary."
On August 6, 2024, the women's ward of Evin prison, which has
been taking part in the "No to Executions" protest campaign for months,
held further demonstrations following Reza Rasaei's execution.
Prison security personnel attacked the protesting women, beating
and injuring many of the prisoners, some of whom suffered mental health
effects. Among those injured was the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges
Mohammadi, whom security personnel struck several times in the chest.
Mohammadi suffered a respiratory attack and severe chest pain, causing
her to collapse in the prison yard, the Iran Human Rights reported.
Iranian authorities have sentenced to death many ethnic and religious
minorities in recent months, Human Rights Watch said. The Supreme Court
confirmed the death sentences of six political prisoners in Vakilabad
prison, in the city of Mashhad on August 8, 2024. On July 4, Iran's
Revolutionary Court sentenced a labor activist, Sharifeh Mohammadi, to
death on a charge of <armed rebellion against the state,> based on an
alleged membership in an opposition group. On July 23, Branch 26 of the
Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political
prisoner, to death for alleged membership in opposition groups. Iranian
security forces arrested Pakhshan Azizi, originally from Mahabad, in
Tehran on August 3,2023 and then transferred her to Ward 209 of Evin
prison. They denied her access to a lawyer and family visits for four
months before transferring her to the women’s ward. Another Kurdish
political activist, Warisha Moradi, who faces charges of <armed
rebellion against the state,> did not attend her own trial on August 4.
In a letter from Evin prison, she said that she would not participate in
the court proceedings in solidarity with death row prisoners Sharifeh
Mohammadi and Pakhshan Azizi. She said, "I do not recognize a court that
fails to deliver fair judgments. I have been accused of armed rebellion
simply for being a woman, a Kurd, and a seeker of a free life."
249 people executed in first six months of 2024
Iranian authorities executed 249 people in the first six months
of 2024, with 147 of them sentenced to death on drug-related charges,
according to the Iran Human Rights. Iran was responsible for 74 percent
of all recorded executions worldwide in 2023, with a total of 853
executions, according to Amnesty International.>>

Farid Saadeghi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 August 2024
<<Exclusive Hengaw Report on the Suicide of a Child Laborer
Following Sexual Assault and Extortion by Two Individuals in Qorveh
Farid Saadeghi, a child laborer from Qorveh and a child of
divorced parents, was just two months away from his fourteenth birthday
when he tragically took his own life. Over the past year, he had been
subjected to repeated sexual assaults by two men, aged 35 and 45, who
filmed the assaults and used the footage to extort and blackmail him.
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, on the night of Monday, August 12, 2024, Farid Saadeghi, a
14-year-old boy, hanged himself in his family home in the village of
Chamaqloo Ganji, Qorveh County. The severe psychological pressure from
the repeated sexual assault and financial extortion by the two men,
identified as <H.T.>, 45, and <K.A.>, 35, drove Farid to end his life.
A member of the Saadeghi family told Hengaw: "After Farid's
suicide, when we checked his mobile phone, we discovered that the two
individuals, 'H.T.' and 'K.A.', had been continuously threatening him
for the past year on social media platforms 'Shad' and 'Rubika' with the
release of a video they had recorded during the assault. Over the past
year, these two individuals forced Farid to comply with their inhumane
and immoral demands and extorted money from him." A resident of the
village of Chameqloo Ganji, confirming this information to Hengaw, said:
"On the evening of the incident, Farid was extremely distressed, holding
a knife, and said he was going to the neighboring village to kill the
two men who had been tormenting him. Ultimately, a group of villagers
persuaded him to abandon his plan and return home." Hengaw has learned
that on the day of the incident, Farid's father and stepmother had taken
his younger sister, who had suffered a leg burn, to Qorveh for
treatment, leaving Farid alone at home, where he took his own life. It
is worth noting that Farid's parents had divorced five years ago, and
both had remarried. Farid had been able to continue his education until
the first year of middle school, after which he dropped out and began
working. For the past year, he had been employed in a fruit and
vegetable market in Tehran. According to a close relative of Farid, he
had returned to Qorveh from Tehran on August 7 to visit his family. The
two men who had assaulted him began harassing him again, leading to his
decision to end his life. Hengaw's investigations reveal that one of the
two men, both of whom were arrested by the police on Tuesday, August 20,
is the cousin of Farid's mother's new husband. Also, the Sadeghi family
have filed their complaint on Tuesday at a court. Additionally, Farid's
body was buried in his village of birth following autopsy and forensic
investigation.>>

Parisvah Moslemi
NCRI - Womens committee - 21 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Parivash Moslemi, detained in Evin Prison, needs urgent medical
attention care
Parivash Moslemi, a political detainee, has been held in Evin
Prison for over 40 days without a resolution of her legal status.
Despite her deteriorating physical condition, she has been denied access
to necessary specialized medical care. Recently, Parivash Moslemi was
briefly transferred to a hospital for treatment but was returned to
prison shortly thereafter without receiving appropriate medical
attention. Since July 27, Ms. Moslemi has been deprived of phone calls
and visits with her family. On August 6, following an altercation in the
women's ward, she sustained injuries to her hand and forehead from baton
strikes by prison guards. Four days later, with visible bruising on her
hand, she was sent to the hospital. However, due to the absence of a
doctor and a power outage, she returned to prison without receiving
medical services. On August 12, she was again sent to Tajrish Hospital,
where the medical staff only applied a splint and then sent her back to
prison. Her hand injuries, including bruising and pain, worsened over
time. On August 14, her condition deteriorated after a fall from a bed,
leading to her transfer to Tajrish Hospital.
There, a specialist examined her and found that her hand was
fractured in two places, though the fractures had started to heal on
their own and required surgery. A cast was applied to her hand.
Additionally, the medical team conducted X-rays of her neck and back,
revealing a herniated disc that requires specialized treatment.
Currently, Parivash Moslemi can walk only with the assistance of fellow
inmates, but her back pain has worsened since her initial injury,
necessitating specialized care. Ms. Moslemi was arrested on July 7,
2023, after appearing at the Evin Prosecutor's Office and was
transferred to the women's ward of Evin Prison. She has previously faced
charges including <propaganda against the state>, <insulting the founder
and leadership>, and <assembly and collusion.> She has a history of
prior arrests. Parivash Moslemi, born in 1978, was arrested by security
forces in Nur city in April 2024. She was released from one of the
city’s security detention centers after three days. Previously, in
September 2023, coinciding with the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death,
Ms. Moslemi was detained by security forces. She was eventually released
a month later on bail from Qarchak Prison in Varamin.>>

Food for thought and call for action:
Leyla Daşçı
Jinha - Womens News Agency 20 August 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Relative of sick prisoner demands release of all sick prisoners
"Today, thousands of people struggle to survive in prisons. As
their families, all we demand is to raise your voices for sick
prisoners," said Leyla Daşçı demanding the release of her daughter Gullu
Daşçı and all sick prisoners.
Siirt- Political prisoners held in Türkiye’s prisoners face
rights violations. The isolation imposed on them especially in S-type
and R-type prisons has recently intensified; sick prisoners are denied
access to treatment. The prisoners are deprived of their right to health
and life. Although there are thousands of sick prisoners, they are not
released from prison. Gullu Daşçı, who needs a heart transplant and has
been receiving treatment for years, is one of these prisoners. Her
mother, Leyla Daşçı, demands the release of her daughter and all sick
prisoners. Gullu Daşçı was arrested in 2016 and transferred to the
prison in Mardin and then to the prison Diyarbakır. She went on a hunger
strike for about 90 days. While she was on the hunger strike, she
vomited blood and began to experience health problems. After a short
time, she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. She needs a heart
transplant and has to receive an injection once a month and often go to
Ankara to receive treatment, her mother told NuJINHA.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Leyla Daşçı gave information about
the current health condition of her daughter, Gullu Daşçı. Leyla Daşçı
is the mother of two prisoners, Gullu Daşçı and Kasım Daşçı. "My son was
sentenced to five years in prison and he has already served two years
and nine months in prison. My daughter has also been held in prison for
years and she will be released from prison three years later. My son and
my daughters are held in different prisons and their family visits are
on the same day. We divide the family to visit both."
'Gullu needs a heart transplant'
The health of Gullu Daşçı has been deteriorating, Leyla Daşçı
told us. "Gullu began to suffer from health problems after being
arrested. Her heart began to enlarge and she suffers from heart
problems. She cannot stay in prison because she cannot meet her basic
needs in prison. She receives an injection once a month. She receives
treatment but the conditions in prison have been deteriorating her
health. She is often transferred to a hospital in Ankara."
Call to end torture!
Leyla Daşçı demands the release of not only her daughter but also
all sick prisoners. "Sick prisoners are released from prison when they
are about to die. Today, thousands of people struggle to survive in
prison. As their families, all we demand is to raise your voices for
sick prisoners." >>

No to executions Tuesdays
NCRI - Womens committee - 20 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Thirty Weeks of Iranian Prisoners' Campaign Against the Death
Penalty
The 30th week of the "Tuesdays Against Executions" campaign was
observed on August 20, 2024, across 18 prisons in Iran. This initiative
saw participation from the women's wards of Evin Prison and Lakan Prison
in Rasht, as well as female prisoners from various other facilities, all
advocating for an end to executions in Iran. The campaign persists as
the clerical regime has executed 118 prisoners in the past month alone,
bringing the total number of executions since March 20, 2024, to 310,
including political detainees. Among those executed since March, at
least 16 have been women. On the occasion of the 30th week of their
hunger strike, Iranian prisoners issued a statement calling on Dr. Mai
Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in
Iran, to confront the inhumane practices such as the widespread use of
the death penalty in Iran and to work towards ending this brutal
practice.>>

the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran’s so-called <morality police>.

Language Institute 'Goethe' Sealed
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 20 August 2024
<<Tehran: German Language Institute "Goethe" Sealed by Security
Forces
According to news broadcast by Iran state media, today, Tuesday,
August 20, 2024, police forces raided the German language institute
"Goethe," expelled the students, and sealed the center. According to a
report received by Hengaw, witnesses stated that the police insulted the
students who were taking an exam and told them, "You are learning the
language to leave or escape the country." According to reports published
by the media affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, educational
institutions affiliated with the German government have engaged in
illegal activities and extensive financial violations, leading to this
action. The Nour News Telegram channel, which reported this news, wrote
that this is a "reciprocal action in response to the closure of cultural
and Islamic centers in Germany." It appears that this action was taken
in response to the closure of the Islamic Center Hamburg by the German
Ministry of the Interior. The Islamic Republic has a track record of
retaliatory actions against German and European institutions, when faced
with their stance on the Islamic Republic's terrorism.>>

Court in Urmia. He was then transferred to the central prison of this
city. This individual had previously been released from Urmia prison on
March 12, 2024, after enduring 204 days of detention by posting bail of
three billion tomans, pending the completion of legal proceedings. It is
worth mentioning that Samad Shabouei was previously arrested on August
21, 2023, after being summoned by the Iranian Intelligence Office in
Oshanvieh. During his detention, he was denied access to a chosen
lawyer. Furthermore, it is notable that Siamand Shabouei, Samad
Shabouei's brother and a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian
Kurdistan, was assassinated on July 11, 2023, in the city of Erbil, the
capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.>>

<<Escalating Arrests of Kurdish Women in Iran: A Concerning Trend
The recent arrests of Kurdish women by Iranian security forces
highlight an alarming pattern of repression against Kurdish activists in
Iran. These arrests have not only targeted women actively involved in
civil rights but also ordinary citizens, raising concerns about their
safety and the transparency of their detention. This report delves into
three recent cases, providing context and details for a broader
understanding.
Arrest of Gelavizh Mohammadi-Arshad in Tehran
On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, a 45-year-old Kurdish woman named
Gelavizh Mohammadi-Arshad was arrested by Iranian security forces in
Tehran, the capital of Iran. Gelavizh, a seamstress by profession, was
apprehended on her way home from work on Bagh-e Shayegan Street. The
security forces, arriving in four vehicles, surrounded and arrested her
without presenting any judicial warrant. Her current whereabouts remain
unknown, adding to her family's distress and public concern.
Re-Arrest of Activist Fermisk Babai in Paveh
Fermisk Babai, a well-known Kurdish female activist from Paveh, a
city in western Iran near the Iraqi border, was re-arrested by Iranian
security forces on Monday, August 12, 2024. Fermisk, who has a history
of previous arrests, was summoned to the Paveh Intelligence Department
along with her family for interrogation before being transferred to the
Naft Square Detention Center in Kermanshah, a major city in western
Iran. When her family protested her arrest, security forces responded
with violence, causing her mother to faint and requiring
hospitalization. Fermisk had been previously detained in a violent
manner last year, around the anniversary of Khomeini's fatwa against
Kurdistan. Given the history of brutal treatment by Iranian security
forces towards civil activists, there is growing concern for her safety
while in custody.
Ongoing Detention and Uncertainty Surrounding Manijeh Khoshnoud
in Bukan
More than two weeks have passed since the arrest of 56-year-old
Manijeh Khoshnoud, a Kurdish woman from Bukan, a city in northwestern
Iran.
Manijeh was detained by the Iranian regime's intelligence forces
on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 4 PM during a raid on her family home in
Bukan. During her arrest, her home was searched, and her mobile phone
was confiscated. Despite continuous efforts by her family to obtain
information about her whereabouts and condition, they have received no
response from the authorities. This lack of communication has heightened
the family's anxiety, especially considering that Manijeh's fate and the
location of her detention remain shrouded in secrecy.
The recent arrests of Kurdish women in Iran, particularly those
of Gelavizh Mohammadi-Arshad, Farmisk Babai, and Manijeh Khoshnoud,
reflect a disturbing trend of repression against Kurdish activists and
ordinary citizens by the Iranian regime. The international community
must pay closer attention to these human rights abuses, as the safety
and lives of these women remain in jeopardy.>>
