Women set on fire
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 22 August 2024
<<Report of a Woman Set on Fire by Her Husband in Shiraz
A woman was set on fire by her husband in Shiraz, with the incident
being reported by government media as a result of so-called <family
disputes,> a label commonly used in cases of femicide. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Monday,
August 12, 2024, a 48-year-old man set fire to his wife and her father
in a neighborhood in Shiraz. In this tragic incident, his wife and two
of her sisters lost their lives, while her father was also injured. The
official site of the Young Journalists Club reported that the killer,
who was arrested shortly after the incident, went to his wife's family
home on the day of the attack and set them on fire by pouring gasoline.
The motive for this heinous crime is being attributed to <family
disputes.> >>

No to excecution Tuesday
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 27 August 2024
<<"No to Executions on Tuesdays": The New Administration Can Be Called
the Administration of Repression and Execution
As the "No to Executions on Tuesdays" campaign enters its thirty-first
week, a group of prisoners from Tehran Bozorg Prison, along with two
members of the Italian Parliament, have joined the campaign. The
statement, which is supported by prisoners from 19 prisons across Iran,
has been received by Hengaw. The full text of the statement is as
follows:
The Continuation of the "No to Executions Tuesdays" Campaign in Its
Thirty-First Week with the Support and Joining of a Group of Prisoners
from Tehran Bozorg Prison and Two Members of the Italian Parliament
In the newly appointed administration, at least 126 people were taken to
the gallows in the month of Mordad (July-August), and their right to
life was taken away. Thousands of prisoners across the country, who are
all victims of the systematic incompetence of this administration, are
also awaiting execution.
Furthermore, the repression apparatus has pressured prisoners who have
protested against this inhumane act in any way as part of this campaign,
depriving them of their basic rights. A clear example of this pressure
is the deprivation of female prisoners in Evin Prison of their right to
phone calls and visits, as well as the transfer of political prisoner
Armita Pavir to solitary confinement in Tabriz Prison.
Given the intensification of repression and the background of the
administration members appointed last week, the new administration can
be called the administration of repression and execution, and it can be
seen as a prelude to further repression of society. However, despite all
the pressures and repressions that the religious government has imposed
on this campaign and on Iranian society, the prisoners continue to
resist and stand against repression and executions. According to
reliable sources, a group of political prisoners in Tehran Bozorg Prison
has announced that they have joined the "No to Executions Tuesdays"
campaign starting this week.
Fortunately, awakened consciences around the world have heard the voice
of resistance from this campaign, including some prominent Italian
representatives who have announced their support for the "No to
Executions Tuesdays" campaign.
The striking prisoners of the "No to Executions Tuesdays" campaign in 19
different prisons, including Evin Prison (Women's Ward, Wards 4, 6, 8),
Qezel Hesar Prison (Units 3 and 4), Central Karaj Prison, Khorramabad
Prison, Shiraz Military Prison, Mashhad Prison, Lakan Rasht Prison,
Qaemshahr Prison, Tabriz Prison, Ardabil Prison, Urmia Prison, Khoy
Prison, Naqadeh Prison, Salmas Prison, Saqqez Prison, Baneh Prison,
Marivan Prison, Kamyaran Prison, and Tehran Bozorg Prison, express their
gratitude to everyone inside and outside the country who supports this
campaign, which aims to abolish executions and torture in Iran. Once
again, they call on all prisoners in various prisons to join the "No to
Executions Tuesdays" campaign. They also request all awakened
consciences around the world to support this campaign to abolish and
combat executions.

Soada Khadirzadeh and Her Child
NCRI - Womens committee - 26 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Soada Khadirzadeh and Her Child Face Harsh Conditions in Urmia Prison
Soada Khadirzadeh, a Kurdish political prisoner, has been held in the
women’s ward of Urmia Central Prison for the past two years, ten months,
and twelve days. She is detained along with her young child, who was
born during her imprisonment. By the end of September this year,
Khadirzadeh will have completed one-fourth of her 12-year prison
sentence. Khadirzadeh, a resident of Piranshahr, was sentenced to 12
years and six months in prison by the Criminal Court of Mahabad. The
charges against her include <complicity in the murder of a member of the
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)> and <membership in the Democratic
Party of Iranian Kurdistan.> The official ruling was communicated to her
family on September 6, 2022.
Harsh Conditions and Health Concerns
Soada Khadirzadeh and her two-year-old daughter, Ala (also known as
Solina), are currently imprisoned without the right to leave. The
women's ward of Urmia Central Prison, where they are held, lacks
adequate sanitation, ventilation, and cooling systems. The poor
conditions have led to Ala developing a skin allergy, yet prison
authorities have refused to transfer her to an external medical facility
for treatment.
Denied Medical Leave and Re-Arrest
The only time Khadirzadeh was granted leave was on Saturday, May 18,
2023, when she traveled from Urmia to a relative’s home in Piranshahr.
However, the following day, she was re-arrested by intelligence forces
in Piranshahr. She and her child were detained for 48 hours at the
intelligence Department in Piranshahr before being returned to the
women's ward of Urmia Central Prison.
Previous Incidents and Imprisonment
Soada Khadirzadeh was initially arrested by government forces on
Thursday, October 14, 2021, in Piranshahr and transferred to Urmia
Central Prison on Monday, November 8, 2021. During her time in prison,
Khadirzadeh attempted suicide but was saved. On Tuesday, June 21, 2022,
she delivered her baby via cesarean section at a hospital in Urmia.
Despite the need for post-operative care, she was returned to prison
just one day after giving birth. Soada Khadirzadeh's ongoing
imprisonment under harsh conditions, especially with her young child,
highlights the severe human rights violations faced by political
prisoners in Iran.>>

Su'da Khedirzadeh
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 25 August 2024
<<Report on the Situation of Su'da Khedirzadeh, a Kurdish Political
Prisoner, and Her Child
Su'da Khedirzadeh, a Kurdish political prisoner held in the women's ward
of Urmia Central Prison, has spent the past two years, ten months, and
12 days in detention along with her infant child. By the end of October
this year, she will have served one-quarter of her 12-year prison
sentence.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, Su'da Khedirzadeh, a political prisoner from Piranshahr, and her
two-year and two-month-old child, *Ala,* continue to be held without the
right to leave in the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison. Sources from
Hengaw inside Urmia Prison report that Ala (also known as Solina) has
recently developed a skin allergy due to the extremely poor sanitary
conditions, lack of proper ventilation, and intense heat within the
women's ward of Urmia Central Prison. The prison authorities have
prevented her from being transferred to medical facilities outside the
prison. On her only occasion of receiving leave, this political prisoner
left Urmia on Saturday, May 18, 2023, to visit a relative in Piranshahr.
A day later, she was arrested by agents of the Piranshahr Intelligence
Department. After 48 hours of detention at the Intelligence Department's
detention center in Piranshahr, the imprisoned mother and her child were
returned to the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison. Su'da Khedirzadeh
had previously been sentenced by the Criminal Court of Mahabad to
12-years and six months of discretionary imprisonment on charges of
<aiding and abetting the murder of a member of the Islamic Revolutionary
Guard Corps and membership in the Democratic Party of Iranian
Kurdistan.> This sentence was officially communicated to the family of
the political prisoner on Saturday, September 6, 2022. Having been saved
from at least one suicide attempt in prison, Su'da Khedirzadeh gave
birth via cesarean section on Monday, June 21, 2022, in a hospital in
Urmia. She was returned to Urmia Central Prison just one day later,
without completing her postpartum treatment. Su'da Khedirzadeh was
arrested by government forces in Piranshahr on Thursday, October 14,
2021, and was transferred to Urmia Central Prison on Monday, November 8,
2021.>>

Elham Ostadi
NCRI - Womens committee - 25 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Elham Ostadi Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Criticizing Police
Officer's Rape of Teenage Girl
Elham Ostadi, a 30-year-old woman from Iranshahr in southeastern Iran,
has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Revolutionary Court in
Zahedan for <propaganda against the state.> Her crime was posting on
social media in support of protests against the rape of a 15-year-old
girl by a former police commander in Chabahar. This case highlights the
ongoing repression of free speech in Iran, especially when it involves
criticism of state officials or institutions. On August 20, 2024, Branch
2 of the Revolutionary Court in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and
Baluchestan province, sentenced Elham Estadi to one year in prison for
<propaganda against the state.> The charge was based on a post she made
on Instagram expressing support for protests against the rape of a
15-year-old girl by Colonel Ebrahim Kuchakzai, the former police
commander of Chabahar, a city in southeastern Iran. The incident that
triggered these protests occurred on September 1, 2022, when Colonel
Kuchakzai, under the pretense of interrogation, took the girl to his
private quarters in Sediq Zahi village, Chabahar County, and raped her.
This heinous act led to widespread protests across Sistan and
Baluchestan province, an area known for its significant Baluch ethnic
minority population. The protests were met with a harsh crackdown by
Iranian security forces. Elham Ostadi Sentenced to One Year in Prison
for Criticizing Police Officer’s Rape of Teenage Girl
Elham Ostadi
Although Elham Ostadi did not participate in the street protests, her
Instagram post criticizing the crime and expressing solidarity with the
protesters led to her arrest on August 22, 2023. She was detained by
security forces in Chabahar, who reportedly used violence and did not
present an arrest warrant. Ostadi was initially held in a secret
detention center before being transferred to Zahedan Central Prison,
where she spent 10 days in solitary confinement. After nearly two weeks
in custody, Ostadi was temporarily released on September 2, 2023, after
posting a bail of 200 million tomans (approximately $4,700 USD at that
time). Despite her release, she continued to face legal pressure,
leading to her eventual sentencing in August 2024. In addition to the
prison sentence for <propaganda against the state,> Elham Ostadi had
previously been fined for <disturbing public opinion> in a separate
case. In response to the public outcry over the rape case, the Iranian
judiciary announced in February 2023 that Colonel Kuchakzai had been
convicted by a military court in Sistan and Baluchestan province. He was
sentenced to prison and permanently dismissed from public service.
Ostadi's sentencing is part of a broader pattern of the Iranian regime's
efforts to silence dissent, particularly on social media, where
criticism of the government and its officials is increasingly met with
severe punishment. This repression is particularly pronounced in regions
like Sistan and Baluchestan, where ethnic and religious minorities face
disproportionate persecution. Elham Ostadi's case is emblematic of the
Iranian regime's ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression. Her
imprisonment for a social media post condemning a police officer's
sexual assault on a minor reflects the lengths to which the regime will
go to suppress dissent and shield its officials from accountability. As
Elham Ostadi prepares to serve her sentence, her story underscores the
urgent need for international attention to the human rights abuses in
Iran, especially concerning the treatment of women and ethnic
minorities.>>

Armita Paveer
NCRI - Womens committee - 24 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Armita Paveer Placed in Solitary Confinement in Tabriz Prison
Armita Paveer, a political prisoner held in the Central Prison of Tabriz,
has been placed in solitary confinement as a punitive measure by prison
authorities. The 29-year-old student activist, who was arrested in late
September 2023, has also been denied all contact with her family since
her transfer to solitary confinement. The incident leading to this
action occurred on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, when Armita Paveer
protested the lack of medical care being provided to a sick inmate.
Following a dispute with prison officials over this issue, she was
placed in solitary confinement as punishment. Since then, Armita Paveer
has been barred from making phone calls or having visits with her
family. Paveer, who is studying cellular and molecular biology at the
Madani University of Azerbaijan, has a history of activism and has been
arrested multiple times. In December 2023, she was sentenced by the
Azarshahr Revolutionary Court to a total of 22 months and 17 days in
prison for charges including <insulting the leadership> and <propaganda
against the regime.> She was previously detained during nationwide
protests in November 2022 and was released on bail in December of that
year. The continued solitary confinement and denial of family contact
have raised concerns about Armita's well-being and the treatment of
political prisoners in Iran.>>

months of imprisonment by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Besides this recent case, he was also detained during the "Woman, Life,

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 24 August 2024
<<Uncertainty Surrounding the Fate of the Eight Kurdish Environmental
Activists from Gilan-e Gharb as the IRGC Attempts to Fabricate Cases
Against Them. Maria Khani, Mohsen Esfandiari, Arash Olafti, Jahangir
Azadi, Lotfollah Parviz, Hamidreza Rahimian, Salman Parhan, and Mohammad
Parviz are civil and environmental activists from Gilan-e Gharb (Gilan)
who were arrested by IRGC intelligence forces in August, 2024. They
remain in detention, with their situation still unclear. According to
reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, more than
ten days after their arrest, there is still no precise information on
the fate or whereabouts of these eight Kurdish civil and environmental
activists from Gilan-e Gharb: Maria Khani, Mohsen Esfandiari, Arash
Olafti, Jahangir Azadi, Lotfollah Parviz, Hamidreza Rahimian, Salman
Parhan, and Mohammad Parviz. The efforts of their families to follow up
on their situation have been unsuccessful. Family members of the
detainees have stated: "The IRGC intends to fabricate cases against
these individuals by accusing them of dishonoring the people and
officials, as well as linking their activities to connections with
opposition parties and foreign intelligence services. Additionally,
cases have been fabricated against political activists from Gilan-e
Gharb who reside abroad."
Arash Olafti and Mohammad Parviz were arrested on Thursday, August 15,
while the other six were detained on Saturday, August 3, along with two
others, Alifarj Khani and Mostafa Rostami, who have since been released.
Hengaw had previously reported that these individuals collaborated in a
signature-gathering campaign called the "Save Zagros Mountains" campaign
and were actively involved in controlling and managing recent wildfires
in the region's forests.
It is worth noting that sensitivity towards the civil, cultural, and
environmental activists in this Kurdish city has intensified following
the Nowruz ceremony earlier this year, which was attended by over 30,000
people.>>

In late August 2024, amid escalating protests by nurses and healthcare
workers across Iran, the Iranian regime’s security forces arrested Zahra
Tamaddon, the head nurse at Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran. Zahra
Tamaddon's arrest is part of a broader crackdown on healthcare
professionals who have been actively participating in protests demanding
better working conditions and wages. On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, Zahra
Tamaddon, the head nurse at Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, was
arrested by intelligence agents. Although the identities of the
arresting officers and the location where she is being held remain
unknown, it is believed that her arrest was prompted by her
participation in protests and her encouragement of hospital staff to go
on strike. Tamaddon's colleagues at Masih Daneshvari Hospital have
stated that they will initiate a strike if she is not released promptly.
Additionally, reports indicate that four other healthcare workers have

The protests and strikes by nurses and healthcare workers are spreading
across at least 20 cities in Iran, including Mashhad (northeastern
Iran), Tabriz (northwestern Iran), Ahvaz (southwestern Iran), Rasht
(northern Iran), Kermanshah (western Iran), Isfahan (central Iran),
Dehdasht (southwestern Iran), Jahrom (southern Iran), Abadan
(southwestern Iran), and Marivan (western Iran). These protests are
driven by deteriorating working conditions, unbearable workloads, and
the systematic violation of their rights.
Nurses are subjected to compulsory overtime, grueling 12-hour shifts,
and meager wages, leaving many unable to meet even their basic living
expenses. The regime has also failed to implement agreed-upon service
tariffs and contracts, further fueling discontent. As a result, the
emigration of nurses from Iran has accelerated in recent months, with an
estimated 150 to 200 nurses leaving the country each month searching for
better opportunities abroad. During the protests, nurses have been vocal
in their demands, chanting slogans such as "A nurse will die, but will
not accept humiliation," "Only in the streets will our rights be won,"
"Expenses in dollars, our wages in rials," "Our power is in our unity,
the result of our hard work,” “Nurses, shout and demand your rights,"
"We've heard enough promises, our tables are empty," and "From Shiraz to
Mashhad, strike, strike."
The arrest of Zahra Tamaddon and other healthcare workers highlights the
growing unrest among Iran’s medical community, who are demanding an end
to oppressive working conditions and the enforcement of their rights.
The regime's response to these peaceful protests has been heavy-handed,
as seen in the arrests of healthcare workers. The situation remains
tense as healthcare professionals across Iran continue their struggle
for justice, fair treatment, and the basic right to a livable wage.>>
