Pakhshan Azizi
Update:

Iranwire - 5 Dec 2024
<<Ongoing Denial of Family Visits for Death Row
Political Prisoner Pakhshan Azizi; Concerns Over
Security Interference in Judicial Process
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner on death
row, has been denied in-person visitation rights for the
past 150 days. Her lawyers express doubts about the
possibility of her acquittal following an appeal due to
the involvement of security agencies. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, Pakhshan Azizi, a political prisoner from
Mahabad, has been deprived of meeting her family and
lawyers in Evin Prison for the past 150 days. This basic
right was revoked during the second round of Iran’s 14th
presidential election. In addition to the complete ban
on in-person visits, Azizi was also denied phone call
privileges until late October. Recently, Amir Raeesian,
Azizi's lawyer, provided an update on her case. He noted
that "concrete and verified documents from official
sources" confirming Azizi's humanitarian and social work
in refugee camps for those displaced by the ISIS war had
been submitted to the Supreme Court. He stated: "Despite
the evidence presented to the Supreme Court, preliminary
reports are not promising, diminishing hopes of
acquittal from the charge of baghi (armed rebellion) and
the accompanying death sentence." Raeesian has also
shared copies of official endorsements from two
humanitarian organizations in Syria confirming Azizi's
social work. He wrote, "Even though innocence and
acquittal should not require proof, we have submitted
credible evidence to the Supreme Court." The two
organizations, "Shams Rehabilitation and Development
Organization" in northeast Syria and the Kurdish Red
Crescent, are both officially registered and licensed in
Syria. Maziar Tataei, another of Azizi's lawyers,
expressed hope that "the Supreme Court's reviewing
branch will avoid hasty judgment and, by carefully
considering the submitted evidence, overturn the death
sentence." However, he also raised concerns about the
possibility of "a rushed trial without adequate
attention to the evidence presented." Pakhshan Azizi was
sentenced to death on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, on the
charge of baghi. She was later accused of <causing
unrest in prison> in a separate case opened by Branch 3
of Evin Prosecutor's Office and sentenced to an
additional six months of imprisonment. It is worth
noting that Azizi was arrested on August 4, 2023, in
Tehran's Kharrazi district by agents of the Ministry of
Intelligence. She was transferred from Evin Prison's
Ward 209, controlled by the Ministry of Intelligence, to
the women's ward on December 11, 2023. Previously, on
November 16, 2009, Azizi had been detained during a
Kurdish student protest at the University of Tehran
against the execution of political prisoners in
Kurdistan. She was released on bail on March 18, 2010,
after four months in detention.
Following years of pressure and threats from security
agencies, Azizi left Iran. She later conducted research
on the status of women in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian
Kurdistan, undertaking initiatives to improve their
conditions through social work.>>

<<Dozens of grieving families demand reversal of death
sentences for Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
Dozens of bereaved families have issued a statement
condemning the death sentences handed down by the
Islamic Republic of Iran. Highlighting the cases of
Kurdish political activists Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan
Azizi, the families have called for the annulment of
their death sentences and an end to capital punishment
in Iran. In conjunction with this statement, a petition
has been launched, urging justice-seekers, activists,
and advocates for fairness to amplify the voices of
Verisha and Pakhshan. The petition demands urgent and
concrete actions to abolish death sentences in Iran. To
date, over 2,000 political and civil activists,
journalists, and bereaved families have signed the
petition, reflecting growing national and international
concern over the use of capital punishment in Iran.
The complete statement is provided below.
"Statement by Victim Families and Human Rights Activists
on the Death Sentence of Varishe Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi
and the Wave of Executions in Iran"
For months, the cry of "No to executions" has been
echoing from the women's ward of Evin Prison and 24
other prisons across Iran. In the past two years, amid a
surge in the number of executions and with over 250
people executed since the new administration took
office, an average of five people are executed daily in
Iran.
We, a group of bereaved families and civil and human
rights activists in Iran, express our profound concern
and sorrow over this unprecedented increase in
executions. This joint call to action is a collective
protest, urging the people of Iran, human rights
organizations, and international institutions to take
immediate and decisive steps.
To the People of Iran: By attending protests and
amplifying your voices, show the world that we demand an
end to executions and a commitment to human rights in
Iran. Your solidarity and participation are potent
forces in this struggle.
To Human Rights Organizations: We call on domestic and
international human rights organizations, such as
Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the UN
Human Rights Council, to continuously monitor the
situation of prisoners in Iran and increase pressure on
the Islamic Republic to halt executions.
To World Governments and International Organizations: We
urge governments and international bodies to use all
diplomatic and legal tools to hold the Islamic Republic
accountable and prevent state-sanctioned murder by this
regime. Following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a
German-American citizen, the closure of three Iranian
consulates in Germany was a positive step toward
responding to these executions.
To Media and Journalists: We appeal to domestic and
international media and journalists to widely cover the
alarming rise in executions and human rights violations
in Iran, raising awareness and mobilizing public opinion
on this crisis.
To the Iranian Diaspora: We urge all Iranians abroad to
organize rallies, protests, and meetings with government
representatives and parliament members to intensify
pressure on the Islamic Republic.
To Save Varishe Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi, and all those
sentenced to death, we call for simultaneous protests in
dozens of cities worldwide. We hope that November 25th,
the International Day for the Elimination of Violence
Against Women, will be a day when voices in numerous
cities across the globe rise together to cry out
In conclusion, as a group of victims' families seeking
justice and activists, we oppose all forms of state
repression and violence against the people. We firmly
believe that we can only achieve a fair and peaceful
society through justice, equality, and respect for human
rights.>>

<<Letter from Pakhshan Azizi: The philosophy of Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi is a philosophy of life
"The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is a philosophy of
life," said Pakhshan Azizi in a letter from Evin prison,
marking the second anniversary of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi"
uprising in Iran.
News Center- Journalist Pakhshan Azizi, who was
sentenced to death on July 23, 2024 and imprisoned in
Evin prison, sent a letter from Evin prison on the
second anniversary of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising
that sparked in Iran and Rojhilat following the killing
of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called <morality
police> in Tehran. "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is a philosophy of
life," Pakhshan Azizi said in the letter, vowing to
strengthen the women's struggle for freedom.
'The 21st century will be the century of women's
revolution'
Pakhshan Azizi pointed to women's leading role in
society, stressing that the social role of men should be
redefined and there is no happiness for both sexes until
gender equality is achieved. "The struggle for
gender-based equality is an ethical-political struggle
against sexism that has become a tool of governments,"
her letter said, stressing that the 21st century will be
"the century of women's revolution."
'People are determined to ensure freedom'
Under current conditions, redesigning and reforming
existing systems is insufficient to ensure freedom,
Pakhshan Azizi stressed in her letter. "The systems must
be completely changed. Women's Revolution is not an
action for reform, but for a radical, theoretical and
scientific action. As women, we have common sense and
language. We are capable of making radical and
comprehensive changes if we fight against the
patriarchal mindset together, in solidarity with each
other."
'The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is not a philosophy
of death but of life'
"Ignoring women is an ideological approach and that a
strong ideological struggle should be waged against it,"
Pakhshan Azizi said, emphasizing that sexism, scientism,
religionism and nationalism target the whole society by
targeting women. "The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is
not a philosophy of death but of life. It is a
scientific revolution actualized by Jineology. This
philosophy embraced by people must not be allowed to be
deflected at any price. For our revolutionary martyrs,
we should build a society that creates democratic
families, preserves its culture, and has revolutionary
consciousness." >>

<<Rights Groups Demand Iran Revoke Kurdish Activist's Death Sentence
Dozens of human rights institutions and organizations have urged the
Islamic Republic to cancel the death sentence handed down to Pakhshan
Azizi, a female Kurdish activist and social worker.
They said the death sentence was a "clear violation" of human rights
principles and standards.
In a statement signed by 26 human rights organizations, including the
Iran Human Rights Organization and the Abdurrahman Broumand Foundation,
they emphasized that the trial process leading to Azizi's sentence was
unfair. "We express our deep concern and strong objection to the
situation of all political prisoners in the Islamic Republic of Iran who
are sentenced to or at risk of being sentenced to death, and we
fundamentally oppose this inhumane and cruel punishment for all
individuals," they said in a statement. "We strongly condemn the
issuance of the Iranian judiciary’s death sentence for Pakhshan Azizi, a
Kurdish woman activist and social aid worker. This sentence is not only
a blatant violation of human rights principles and standards, as well as
international conventions and treaties, but also a clear manifestation
of the systematic repression of freedom of expression and the right to
life in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The undersigned human rights
organizations demand the revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence
and her immediate and unconditional release. This sentence is not just a
threat to the life of a civil and social activist, it is also a clear
and unlawful attempt by the Iranian government to retaliate against
supporters of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" (Women, Life, Freedom) uprising,
suppress peaceful dissent, and continue the systematic violation of
women's rights in Iran," they added.
Azizi's ordeal began on August 4, 2023, when she was arrested by Iranian
Intelligence forces in Tehran's Kharazi town. She was initially held in
Ward 209 of Evin Prison, known for housing detainees of the Iranian
Intelligence Service, and then transferred to the women's ward on
December 11, 2023. In 2009, she was arrested during a protest by Kurdish
students at Tehran University against the execution of political
prisoners in Kurdistan.
After her release in 2010, Azizi left Iran due to persistent pressure
and threats from intelligence agencies. She subsequently engaged in
social work and research on women's issues in Iraqi and Syrian
Kurdistan.>>

No Execution Tuesdays
Iranwire - September 10, 2024
<<'No Execution Tuesdays': Iran's Prisoner-Led Campaign Continues
The "No Execution Tuesdays" campaign, a prisoner-led initiative against
capital punishment in Iran, has entered its 33rd consecutive week. The
campaign has reached at least 21 prisons across the country this
Tuesday. This growth comes as the country approaches the anniversary of
the 2022 protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death in custody. The
campaign against executions, led by prisoners who have been going on
hunger strike each Tuesday for 33 weeks, has gained support. In the past
week alone, 68 Iranian and international human rights organizations have
endorsed the campaign. These prisoners, including those in Evin,
Qezelhesar, and the Great Tehran Prison, continue to condemn the use of
the death penalty and call for an end to it. The weekly hunger strike
began in February this year, comprising prisoners from various Iranian
jails. The number of executions in Iran reached 853 in 2023, which is
the highest recorded since 2015 and marks a 48 percent increase from
2022 in the aftermath of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The
campaign's continuation comes in the wake of recent executions carried
out by the Islamic Republic's judicial system.
The Islamic Republic's authorities executed six more prisoners on
Monday. These prisoners were previously sentenced to death for
drug-related offenses and were executed in Zahedan Prison.>>

Evin prison
Iranwire - September 10, 2024
<<Political Prisoners in Iran Jail Sew Lips in Desperate Protest
Several political prisoners in Ward 4 of Tehran's Evin Prison sewed
their lips shut and began a sit-in on Monday. The prisoners took the
extreme measure in response to the prison authorities' refusal to
address their demands regarding their poor conditions. This mode of
protest has been used by political prisoners in Iran on multiple
occasions over the years. It serves as a symbol of resistance against
what prisoners claim are illegal detentions and inhumane conditions
within the prison system. In July, Mazaher Heydari, a detained member of
Iran's Gonabadi Dervish religious minority, sewed both his lips and
eyelids shut to protest the failure of judicial officials to release him
as promised. Heydari's protest ended with his release on July 10, while
he was still hospitalized. Protests have also spread to other areas of
Evin Prison. The women's ward has recently witnessed its own
demonstration, with three political prisoners - Sarvenaz Ahmadi, Hora
Nikbakht, and Parivash Muslimi - launching a hunger strike and refusing
medication in protest against their situation.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 9 Sept 2024
<<Twenty-Six Human Rights Organizations Demand Immediate Cancellation of
Pakhshan Azizi's Death Sentence
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, along with twenty-five other
human rights organizations, has issued a joint statement condemning the
death sentence of Pakhshan Azizi. In the statement, they collectively
demand the immediate and unconditional cancellation of Azizi's death
sentence and call for her release.
The full text of the statement is as follows:
Joint Statement of Human Rights Organizations Condemning the Death
Sentence of Pakhshan Azizi:
We Demand the Immediate and Unconditional Revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's
Death Sentence and Her Release.
We, the undersigned human rights organizations, express our deep concern
and strong objection to the situation of all political prisoners in the
Islamic Republic of Iran who are sentenced to or at risk of being
sentenced to death, and we fundamentally oppose this inhumane and cruel
punishment for all individuals. We strongly condemn the issuance of the
Iranian judiciary’s death sentence for Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish woman
activist and social aid worker. This sentence is not only a blatant
violation of human rights principles and standards, as well as
international conventions and treaties, but also a clear manifestation
of the systematic repression of freedom of expression and the right to
life in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Pakhshan Azizi, who has consistently worked to raise public awareness,
support women's rights, and achieve social justice both during and after
her student years as a social worker, is now facing this cruel
punishment due to her efforts in defending basic human rights and
fundamental freedoms.
From the very first moments of her arrest, which was accompanied by
violence from Islamic Republic security forces, she was subjected to
torture-including months of solitary confinement without the right to
meet with her family or access to a lawyer—in order to extract forced
confessions and fabricate a case against her. The outcome of such a
process can never lead to justice, and Pakhshan was later sentenced to
death in a completely unfair judicial process, deprived of the
fundamental rights that every prisoner should have. As a political
prisoner, Pakhshan is charged with "rebellion" and sentenced to the
death penalty despite denying any involvement in armed operations. Her
lawyers have also clearly stated: "Ms. Azizi not only did not
participate in any armed operations, but she was also in Iraq and Syria
for seven years. Due to ISIS atrocities, she had to move to refugee
camps in the Rojava region of Syria in 2015, where she was helping
refugees and victims because she was a social worker. Even in her
sentencing, there is no mention of any military operations or conflict
involving Ms. Azizi with any government or non-governmental entity in
Iran."
The undersigned human rights organizations demand the revocation of
Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence and her immediate and unconditional
release. This sentence is not just a threat to the life of a civil and
social activist, it is also a clear and unlawful attempt by the Iranian
government to retaliate against supporters of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi"
(Women, Life, Freedom) uprising, suppress peaceful dissent, and continue
the systematic violation of women's rights in Iran.
We also call on the international community-the UN, governments
worldwide, and human rights organizations-to take immediate and
effective action, to express their protest against this unjust death
sentence against Ms. Azizi, condemn the executions in Iran that are
carried out without due process or fair trials, and to address the
severe and widespread violations of human rights by the Islamic Republic
government. The global community should use all legal, political, and
diplomatic mechanisms and capacities to prevent the issuance and
execution of such inhumane sentences by Iran's judiciary.
It is evident that the continued oppressive measures and issuance of
heavy sentences, such as the death penalty for political and social
activists, perpetuate the cycle of violence and human rights violations
and increase the existing multifaceted discrimination and repression in
Iran. Therefore, decisive and practical steps must be taken to halt this
trend.
The undersigned human rights organizations firmly believe that the
judicial process in the Islamic Republic is completely unjust and
discriminatory, and therefore all death sentences must be immediately
revoked.
While emphasizing the urgent need for the immediate revocation of
Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence and all other death sentences in Iran,
we call for increased pressure on Iran's judiciary by the global
community, international human rights organizations, concerned citizens
worldwide, and civil activists inside and outside Iran. Only through the
synergy of forces and effective practical measures can we stop the
systematic repression and unlawful punishments in Iran, and the Islamic
Republic's killing machine.
