Flu-Like Illness
NCRI - Womens committee - 4 Sept 2024 - in Women's News
<<Flu-Like Illness Spreads Among Female Prisoners in Evin Prison Amid
Lack of Medical Care
Outbreak in Evin Women's Ward Raises Alarms
An unidentified flu-like illness has rapidly spread among female
prisoners in the women's ward of Evin Prison, affecting a significant
number of inmates. The symptoms of the illness include severe coughing
with phlegm, headaches, body aches, fatigue, drowsiness, and weakness.
The situation has become so dire that many prisoners have had to receive
intravenous fluids.
Inadequate Medical Care and Quarantine Facilities
Despite the seriousness of the outbreak, the female prisoners are
reportedly being denied adequate medical care and access to proper
quarantine facilities to isolate those who are sick. This is especially
concerning given that some of the affected prisoners are elderly,
including political prisoners Parvin Mirasan and Raheleh Rahemipour,
both of whom are over 70 years old.
High-Risk Prisoners
The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of several
high-risk prisoners who suffer from pre-existing conditions. These
include serious illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), and
cardiovascular diseases, making them particularly vulnerable to
complications from the flu-like illness.
Some of the most at-risk inmates include:
Raheleh Rahemipour (71 years old): A political prisoner with a brain
tumor and other serious health issues.
Marzieh Farsi: Another political prisoner who has previously battled
cancer and continues to suffer from its effects.
Houri (Fatemeh) Ziaii: A political prisoner with multiple sclerosis and
other infectious diseases.
Evin Prison
Human Rights Violations in Evin Prison
The failure to provide adequate medical care to sick prisoners and the
lack of proper quarantine measures constitute clear violations of the
fundamental principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This treatment not only contravenes human dignity and ethical standards
but also breaches several specific articles of the declaration,
including Article 3 on the right to life, Article 5 on prohibition of
torture and inhuman treatment, and Article 7, the principle of equality.
The ongoing health crisis in Evin Prison's women’s ward underscores the
urgent need for international attention and intervention to protect the
lives and rights of these prisoners.>>

<<164,000 Children Out of School in Iran, Official Reports
Rezvan Hakimzadeh, Iran's newly appointed Deputy of Primary Education in
the Ministry of Education, has announced that at least 164,000 children
are currently out of school. Hakimzadeh explained that birth records are
the primary method for identifying children in need of education. In
2021, the parliament research center reported a 17 percent increase in
school dropouts over the previous six years. The report, titled
"Investigation on the Trend of Dropping Out and Remaining in Education,"
revealed that despite having numerous policies before and after the 1979
Islamic Revolution to ensure full educational coverage, these goals have
not been achieved. In the 2020-2021 school year, 911,272 children who
were required to be in school were absent from education, and 279,019
students dropped out during the same period.>>

<<Held Without Trial, Political Prisoner Denied Medical Care in Iran
Iranian authorities have denied medical treatment to a prisoner with
severe health problems. Masoud Jamaei, a political detainee held in
Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz for over 13 months without a clear resolution to
his case, is reportedly suffering from severe health issues and has been
denied adequate medical care. According to the HRANA human rights
website, Jamaei is battling stomach and liver cancer, as well as high
blood pressure.
Despite his critical condition, Jamaei has been deprived of specialized
medical care and has not been transferred to any medical facilities for
treatment. Jamaei was previously charged by the prosecutor's office with
<corruption on Earth,> <membership in anti-Islamic Republic groups,> and
<assembly and collusion to disrupt national security.> However, despite
these serious allegations, no court has convened to hear his case.
Jamaei, 47, a resident of Ahvaz, was arrested by security forces from
his locality on August 1, 2023.>>

<<3 Kids Drown Seeking Relief from Heat Amid Water, Power Cuts
At least three children drowned in southern Khuzestan province over the
past week amid intense heat and continuous power outages. Residents of
the region report that due to the heat and frequent power cuts, many
people have sought relief in local water canals and rivers. However, the
lack of access to safe recreational water facilities has led to fatal
consequences, such as the three children's deaths. Further, the ongoing
power outages have caused extensive financial damage to citizens'
electric devices and severely impacted both small and large industries
across Iran. Reports received by IranWire indicate that during the peak
heat period in southern Iran, simultaneous power and water outages have
left several neighborhoods in Ahvaz struggling to cope. The relentless
heat, coupled with utility disruptions, has made daily life unbearable
for many residents.
One resident from the Mahdis neighborhood of Ahvaz shared their
frustration with IranWire, saying, "Where should we take refuge? The
Islamic Republic's radio and TV predicted today's temperature at 43
degrees, but then they reported that it could reach 45 degrees. "In
reality, Ahvaz feels like 50 degrees in the shade. Even when the heat is
unbearable, we have had our water cut off every day for a month.
Sometimes, we go without water for two or three hours daily. Everywhere
we call, they tell us it's our fault for high consumption during the
summer. But what are we supposed to do? Should we not take a shower?
Should we not drink water? How is it normal for people to be punished
with three to four hours of daily outages just for using basic
necessities?" the resident said. Hashem Ore'ei, an electrical
engineering professor at Sharif University, stated in an interview with
Entekhab the lack of electricity and production last year resulted in an
$8 billion loss. He warned that this year's losses could reach $12
billion, with power outages likely extending into winter.>>

Anti-Execution Campaign
Iranwire - September 3, 2024
<<Iranian Prisoners' Anti-Execution Campaign Reaches 32nd Week
The "No Execution Tuesdays" campaign, a prisoner-led initiative against
capital punishment in Iran, has entered its 32nd consecutive week. This
Tuesday, inmates in Bam and Isfahan prisons participated in the
campaign, expanding its reach to 21 prisons in the country.
Jina Amini
The growth comes as the country approaches the anniversary of the 2022
protests sparked by Mahsa Amini's death in custody. The campaign against
executions, led by prisoners who have been going on hunger strike for 32
weeks each Tuesday, has gained support. In the past week alone, 68
Iranian and international human rights organizations have endorsed the
campaign, which now spans 21 prisons across the country. These
prisoners, including those in Evin, Qezelhesar, and the Great Tehran
Prison, continue to condemn the use of the death penalty and call for an
end to it. On Tuesday, coinciding with the hunger strike of hundreds of
prisoners participating in the "No to Execution Tuesdays" campaign, a
prisoner was executed in Sabzevar. The weekly hunger strike began in
February this year comprising prisoners from various Iranian jails. The
number of executions in Iran reached 853 in 2023, which is the highest
recorded since 2015 and marks a 48 percent increase from 2022 in the
aftermath of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests.
The spike in death penalties has continued into 2024, with at least 95
recorded executions till March 20, according to Amnesty International.>>

Bolbanabad Protests
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 3 Sept 2024
<<Security Situation in Bolbanabad After Protests: Confirmation of
Several Arrested Protesters
Following three days of protests by residents of Bolbanabad city in
Kurdistan (Sanandaj) province against the traffic of heavy mining
machinery and the resulting road destruction, Iranian security forces,
including special forces, arrested and beat dozens of protesters last
night. Among the arrested individuals are Jamil Mohammadi (farmer),
Shadman Mohammadi (teacher), Foad Mohammadi (member of the Bolbanabad
Council), Mohammad Mohammadi, Maysam Haji Majid, an individual named
Samir (surname unknown), and two others with the last name 'Bagheri'
from Serenjianeh.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, on the evening of Sunday, September 1, 2024, these residents,
along with more than 20 others, were detained by security forces. The
detainees were transferred from the Bolbanabad police station in
Dehgolan to Qorveh Central Prison on the morning of September 2. Hengaw
sources in Bolbanabad report that over 10 protesters were severely
beaten by the security forces during the protests, with some in critical
condition. The protests erupted after promises made by officials of the
Islamic Republic of Iran to prevent the movement of heavy machinery from
the iron ore mines through Bolbanabad were not fulfilled. Last night,
these vehicles once again traveled from Bolbanabad to Dehgolan,
prompting action by the residents to stop them. According to local
residents, the head of the Maimonabad mine, identified as 'Sarikhani'
from Isfahan, threatened the protesters, saying, <I will buy all of
Bolbanabad and make the protesters miserable.> Witnesses have reported
that since last night, Bolbanabad schools have been repurposed as
accommodation and gathering places for special forces, who are expected
to remain stationed there for an indefinite period. The crackdown by
security forces occurred after two iron ore transport machines from the
Maimonabad mine were set on fire. According to Bolbanabad residents,
this incident was an "organized action" by the mine owners and their
associates to create a pretext for suppressing the protests.>>
