Dilşin Kara
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 2, 2024 - by NUPELDA DENIZ
<<Male teachers in Makhmour: We cannot teach the truth without overcoming patriarchy
Martyr Jiyan Academy held a workshop on gender equality for male teachers in the Makhmour refugee camp. "We cannot teach the truth without overcoming the patriarchy," said the teachers participating in the workshop.
Makhmour- The Martyr Jiyan Academy has held awareness-raising activities and events for the young people in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) since it was founded in 2003. The academy held a 12-day workshop for male teachers on August 19 with the participation of 28 male teachers. In an interview with NuJINHA, the academy member Dilşin Kara and male teachers participating in the workshop talked about the aim of the workshop.
'We will create change and transformation in the patriarchal mindset'
Speaking about the workshop held in the camp for male teachers, Dilşin Kara said, "We organize workshops for both male and female teachers in summer. The aim of our workshops is to change the 5000-year-old patriarchal mindset. Since teachers raise our children, they must first educate themselves. We will create change and transformation in the patriarchal mindset by holding such workshops."
'We cannot teach the truth without breaking down patriarchy'
Education is important for teachers, said Yusif Kara, one of the male teachers participating in the workshop. "Teachers are the educators of children and they play a vital role in shaping their lives. For this reason, they should break down patriarchy. We, as male teachers, cannot teach the truth without breaking down patriarchy. Such workshops should be organized for everyone in society." The workshop focused on the concept of power, male dominance, masculinity, gender and sexism, Yûsiv Kara added. "At the end of the workshop, we learned how cruel the male dominance is. Surely, there have been changes and transformations in the past, but there is a need for a radical change. Men are affected by patriarchy while there is a great struggle against it. A free society will be built by the model aiming at forming democratic families."
'Our expectations are high'
"Teachers must have knowledge about society, nature, women and family," said Mustafa Nerexi, another male teacher participating in the workshop. "The workshop was named after Martyr Yusif Pirosi. Each workshop is an experience for us. As teachers, we, of course, need education because we must have knowledge about society, nature, women and family. For this reason, our expectations are high. There are very serious attacks against the Kurdish people and Kurdistan, so we should protect our existence and our identity. Such workshops make us happy." >>

<<Egyptian women demand gender equality
Egyptian women demand the equal participation of women and men in all aspects of political and public life, pointing out that the rate of women's political participation increases, compared to previous years.
Cairo- The patriarchal mindset that prevents women's political participation in Egypt restricts women in all facets of life by affecting many Egyptian political parties over the past years. Jihan Al-Falaki, an Egyptian lawyer, has worked on many projects on power cuts, street lights and the presence of <waste> in her neighborhood in Cairo. One of the most important obstacles faced by women in voluntary political parties' work is time, said Jihan Al-Falaki. "Many women do not have time to participate in politics because they have to work during the day. Participation in political parties' work comes after regular work hours; however, they also bear so much of domestic burden." Speaking about the candidates for the presidency in the Bar Association, she said, "The results were shocking because none of the female candidates succeeded. Women are underrepresented at decision-making positions no matter how women are competent and have the capacity for change. The exclusion of women in politics and decision-making positions is related to the culture of society. Our society believes that women always need someone and they cannot make decisions."
'There is an increase in women's political participation'
Asmaa Hassanein Mohamed, a lawyer at the Courts of Appeal and the Council of State and a women's rights researcher, believes that the rate of women's participation in political parties has increased, compared to previous years. "Previously, women were marginalized in Egyptian political parties. I can say that this has changed in recent years. Women have an effective presence and influence in various political parties. There is an increase in women's political participation."
'Gender equality should be achieved'
Women should be empowered in politics and decision-making positions, said Asmaa Hassanein Mohamed. "Gender equality should be achieved in all aspects of political and public life. Political parties, NGOs and governmental institutions should work together to achieve gender equality." >>
