<<'The proposed amendments will cause societal collapse if approved'
The proposed amendments to the Iraqi Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959
aim to reduce the minimum age for marriage and eliminate women's rights,
say the women of Sulaymaniyah, stressing that the amendments will cause
societal collapse if approved.
Sulaymaniyah- Some Shiite parties submitted a bill to amend the Iraqi
Personal Status Law No.188 of 1959 to the Iraqi Parliament on August 4,
2024. The proposed amendments pose a threat to the basic rights of women
and children, aiming at depriving women of their custody rights,
reducing the minimum age for marriage.
'Raising awareness is important'
Alaa Omar, a female student in Sulaymaniyah, thinks that the proposed
amendments pose a threat to women and children. "The amendments aims to
legalize child marriage. Separating girls from their families when they
are nine years old is an injustice to both girls and their mothers.
Girls should go to school, not be married off. The amendments pose a
threat to the basic rights of women and children in Iraq. Raising
awareness in society is important. We should raise awareness about the
threats posed by the proposed amendments by organizing conferences and
seminars and using social media platforms."
'They will cause societal collapse if approved'
"If the proposed amendments are approved, child marriages will be
legalized," said Dima Nasr, another woman in Sulaymaniyah. "The minimum
age for marriage should be 20. I hope that proposed amendments would not
be approved by the parliament. 9-year-old girls are not physically,
mentally and sexually ready for marriage. The proposed amendments will
cause societal collapse if approved. We should organize activities and
launch campaigns to raise awareness about the threats posed by the
amendments."
'Child marriage is a human rights violation'
Child marriage is a human rights violation, said Shabano Ahmed. "As a
mother, I am against the marriage of 9-year-old girls. I endure all the
difficulties caused by the patriarchal mindset to build a healthy life
for my children and myself. As women, we should defend our rights and
launch a campaign against the proposed amendments."
'Media plays an important role'
Tharwa Omar thinks that the proposed amendments are unacceptable.
"Forcing 9-year-old girls into marriage is a crime. If the minimum age
for marriage is reduced, it will cause a societal collapse. Media plays
an important role in raising awareness against the proposed amendments."

Makhmour Women's Foundation women
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 21 , 2024 - NUPELDA DENIZ
<<Makhmour Women's Foundation offers women vocational courses
Makhmour Women’s Foundation founded in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem Cudi
Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) offers women sewing courses.
Makhmour- In the 1990s, thousands of Kurdish people were forcibly
displaced from their homeland in Northern Kurdistan due to the attacks
of the Turkish state. Some of them went to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq
in 1994 and stayed in seven different camps. After the Makhmour Martyr
Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) was founded in 1998, they
settled there. Despite all the difficult living conditions, the
displaced women managed to rebuild their life in the camp. In 2002, the
women of the camp founded the Makhmour Women’s Foundation to empower
women. Since the foundation was founded, it has carried out many
activities such as vocational courses, photography workshops and
cultural activities. Despite limited means, the foundation promotes
women's economic empowerment and increases women’s labor force
participation by offering vocational courses. For three years, the
foundation has offered three sewing courses in the camp. NuJINHA spoke
to Nure Kara, one of the sewing teachers at the foundation, and Viyan
Mijinî, one of the course attendees, about the sewing courses offered by
the foundation.
'The foundation aims to increase women's labor force participation'
The aim of the foundation is to promote women's economic empowerment and
increase women's labor force participation by offering women vocational
courses, Nure Kara told us. "Women's labor force participation is very
important for women to improve themselves. As the foundation, we have
carried out activities to increase women's labor force participation.
Every summer, we offer women a sewing course. Many women attend the
course to learn how to sew. 20 women have attended the 20-day course."
'Women should participate in labor force for themselves and their
existence'
The foundation also supports women to start their own business after
they complete the course. "We are here to support women. Women should
improve themselves and get to know their rights. They should participate
in the labor force for themselves and their existence. The door of our
foundation is open for all women."
'We learn how to sew'
"As young women in the camp, we attend the course and learn all the
details about sewing," said Viyan Mijini. "The Women's Foundation gives
women a great opportunity by organizing courses for women in the camp.
After learning how to sew, we will teach other women how to sew. Such
courses are important not only for us but also for the future of our
children. I call on all women to improve themselves by attending such
courses." >>

<<Relative of sick prisoner demands release of all sick prisoners
"Today, thousands of people struggle to survive in prisons. As their
families, all we demand is to raise your voices for sick prisoners,"
said Leyla Daşçı demanding the release of her daughter Gullu Daşçı and
all sick prisoners.
Siirt- Political prisoners held in Turkiye's prisoners face rights
violations. The isolation imposed on them especially in S-type and
R-type prisons has recently intensified; sick prisoners are denied
access to treatment. The prisoners are deprived of their right to health
and life. Although there are thousands of sick prisoners, they are not
released from prison. Gullu Daşçı, who needs a heart transplant and has
been receiving treatment for years, is one of these prisoners. Her
mother, Leyla Daşçı, demands the release of her daughter and all sick
prisoners. Gullu Daşçı was arrested in 2016 and transferred to the
prison in Mardin and then to the prison Diyarbakır. She went on a hunger
strike for about 90 days. While she was on the hunger strike, she
vomited blood and began to experience health problems. After a short
time, she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. She needs a heart
transplant and has to receive an injection once a month and often go to
Ankara to receive treatment, her mother told NuJINHA.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Leyla Daşçı gave information about the
current health condition of her daughter, Gullu Daşçı. Leyla Daşçı is
the mother of two prisoners, Gullu Daşçı and Kasım Daşçı. "My son was
sentenced to five years in prison and he has already served two years
and nine months in prison. My daughter has also been held in prison for
years and she will be released from prison three years later. My son and
my daughters are held in different prisons and their family visits are
on the same day. We divide the family to visit both."
'Gullu needs a heart transplant'
The health of Güllü Daşçı has been deteriorating, Leyla Daşçı told us. "Gullu
began to suffer from health problems after being arrested. Her heart
began to enlarge and she suffers from heart problems. She cannot stay in
prison because she cannot meet her basic needs in prison. She receives
an injection once a month. She receives treatment but the conditions in
prison have been deteriorating her health. She is often transferred to a
hospital in Ankara."
Call to end torture!
Leyla Daşçı demands the release of not only her daughter but also all
sick prisoners. "Sick prisoners are released from prison when they are
about to die. Today, thousands of people struggle to survive in prison.
As their families, all we demand is to raise your voices for sick

statement greeting the resistance of women in India and Afghanistan and
saying, "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi has become a global slogan of women."
News Center- The Kurdistan Women's Communities (KJK) has published a

in India over the rape and killing of a student doctor at a state-run
hospital in Kolkata on August 9, the protests of Afghan women against
the Taliban and the "No to Executions" campaign launched against the
death sentences given to labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi and
journalist Pakhshan Azizi by the Iranian regime and said, "What has been
going on is an important process in the women's struggle. The system of
patriarchal modernity and capitalism is suffering from a deep crisis.
This system tries to maintain its power and overcome this crisis through
recolonization and war. The process we are going through is a period of
crisis and is known as the Third World War that is being waged based on
sexism and religious ideology. Countries, people, especially women, are
attacked by hegemonic powers.
Sharifeh Mohammadi and journalist Pakhshan Azizi
We face the biggest threat we have ever faced
The war started against women thousands of years ago has recently
intensified especially in the Middle East, Asia and North Africa, where
women are killed every day. There is a need to end the war against
women, especially in Iran, Afghanistan, India, Kurdistan, Iraq, Turkiye,
Bangladesh, Libya and Latin America. We face the biggest threat we have
ever faced," the statement said.
"We are on a historical threshold
We are on a historical threshold", the statement added. "Women's
resistance has a historical role. Today, we see that the philosophy of
"Jin, Jiyan,Azadi" has become a global slogan of women resisting all
forms of gender-based violence and femicide. We greet the protests in
India, Afghanistan and Iran and call on all women's organizations and
movements to stand with them. We express our support to Indian, Afghan,

<<More than 600,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition in Yemen
The number of children under five in Government of Yemen-controlled
areas who are suffering from acute malnutrition rose by 34 per cent
compared to last year, UN agencies and partners said in a report
published on Sunday.
News Center- The number of children under five in Government of
Yemen-controlled areas who are suffering from acute malnutrition rose by
34 per cent compared to last year, said the reported published on Sunday
by UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The sharp
increase is being driven by diseases, including cholera and malaria,
high food insecurity, and limited access to safe drinking water and
other essential services, according to the analysis by the Integrated
Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Technical Working Group.
Overall, some 600,000 boys and girls are affected, including 120,000 who
are severely malnourished. Additionally, around 223,000 pregnant and
lactating women in these areas were found to be acutely malnourished,
according to the report. The report anticipates that all 117 districts
in Government-controlled areas surveyed, all located in the south, will
experience "serious" levels of malnutrition or worse during the lean
season from July to October. "UNICEF, together with sister UN agencies
the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
and the World Health Organization (WHO), are calling for urgent support
and action to address the root causes of acute malnutrition in Yemen by
strengthening existing social protection, health, food and water,
sanitation, and hygiene systems."
Ending the nearly decade-long conflict and restoring peace are critical
to both address challenges and build the resilience of Yemen's people,
who have been devastated by the lack of basic services, repeated
displacements, and shattered economic and social systems, UN agencies
stressed in the report.>>

Afghan women resist Taliban
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 19 , 2024 - by BAHARIN LEHIB
<<Afghan women resist Taliban for three years
Since the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, Afghan women and girls have
been deprived of their rights. Despite the oppressive policies of the
Taliban, women are determined to end the Taliban’s darkness.
Kabul- The Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021 has
caused the country to suffer from an uncertainty. Before the Taliban
entered Kabul, Afghanistan's former President Ashraf Ghani fled the
country along with his family members by taking large sums of money,
which sparked anger among Afghan people. The Kabul International Airport
became the center of chaos for 15 days amid the Taliban's rapid advance
on Kabul; five Afghans died after falling from planes, several people,
including children, were trampled to death.to death in the stampede. The
chaos that started at the airport still continues in every city of
Afghanistan due to the Taliban's oppression, torture, massacres and
bans. After taking control of the country, the Taliban vowed to respect
women; however, what has been going on in the country for three years
reveals that women in the country have been subjected to rights
violations. The situation of women and girls under the Taliban’s rule
has been deteriorating every day. The Taliban have deliberately deprived
1.4 million Afghan girls of schooling through bans, said a report
released by the United Nations on August 15, 2024. The Taliban have
restricted Afghan women's access to work, travel and healthcare. In
addition, women, who do not dress according to the Taliban's
interpretation of Sharia, face severe punishments.
'1.4 million girls have been deliberately denied access to education'
At least 1.4 million girls have been deliberately denied access to
secondary education since the takeover, an increase of 300,000 since its
previous count in April 2023, with more girls reaching the age limit of
12 every year, said the report released by UNESCO on August 15, 2024.
'141 journalists have been arrested or detained'
In the three years since the Taliban's return to power on 15 August
2021, when the Islamic fundamentalist group captured Kabul, 141
journalists have been arrested or detained, according to the Reporters
Without Borders (RSF). Of the 141 journalists that have been targeted in
the past three years, 94 have been arrested, four of them twice, and 47
have been imprisoned.
Anti-democratic practices
Since the Taliban's takeover of the country, they have implemented many
anti-democratic practices, by issuing over 200 decrees and orders that
violate human rights and women's rights, cutting the salaries of women
from 10,000 afghanis to 5,000 afghanis (70 US dollars), flogging women
and men on charges of involving <immoral relations>. In the three years,
many members of the Shia Hazara minority in Afghanistan have been killed
in suicide attacks on mosques, schools, training courses in Kabul and
other provinces of Afghanistan. Dozens of women such as Zainab Abdullahi,
Marina Sadat and Husna Sadat have been killed by the Taliban. Since
2021, the rate of domestic violence, poverty and unemployment has been
on rise in the country. Despite the crimes committed against women by
the Taliban, Afghan women are determined to resist and end the Taliban's
darkness.>>

Yazidi women

<<'They must hold those responsible for the genocide accountable instead
of closing the PADE'
"Instead of trying to close down the PADE, they (Iraqi authorities) must
hold the Turkish state and ISIS responsible for the genocide against the
Yazidi community and rescue Yazidi women held captive by ISIS," said
Yazidi women.
Shengal (Sinjar)- On August 6, the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq
decided to dissolve three political parties, the Freedom Movement (Tevgera
Azad'), the Yazidi Freedom and Democracy Party (PADÊ) the Democratic
Struggle Front representing the will of the Kurdish and Yazidi people in
Iraq. Reacting to the decision, Yazidi women said they would stand with
their party to the end.
'The Turkish state and the KDP are behind this decision'
"This decision is not a decision made only by Iraq," said Filus Berkat,
member of the Peoples' Assembly in Shengal's Xanesor town. "The Turkish
state and the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) are behind this decision.
We will not allow them to close down our party. This decision is the
continuation of the genocide against the Yazidi community. They aim to
silence and annihilate Yazidis by trying to close down the PADE. Instead
of trying to close down the PADE, they (Iraqi authorities) must hold the
Turkish state and ISIS responsible for the genocide against the Yazidi
community and rescue Yazidi women held captive by ISIS. We will never
remain silent and always struggle."
'The PADE preserves Yazidi culture'
Seve Xwededa, member of the Peoples' Assembly in Shengal's Snune town,
condemned the decision of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq. "They
decided to close down the PADE on the anniversary of the Yazidi
genocide. The aim of the decision is to annihilate the Yazidi community
by closing down the PADE. We do not accept this decision because the
PADE protects Yazidis and preserve Yazidi culture. They must hold those

detentions against the people dancing halay to Kurdish music, she said,
"We will keep preserving our culture and dancing halay."
'They do everything to prevent us from demanding justice and our rights'
The prosecutor asked Ayşe Taşçı why she had attended the event organized
on the International Women's Day. "I was also asked why I am a member of
the Peace Mothers' Initiative. They do everything to prevent us from

aim to intimidate us by detaining and arresting us."
'We will preserve our language as long as we live'
"We will all die one day but our death must be an honorable death," Ayşe

Women arrested for dancing halay
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 16 , 2024
<<Women arrested in Siirt for dancing halay released from prison
Four people, who were arrested in Siirt for dancing halay to Kurdish
music, have been released from prison, banned from travelling abroad.
News Center- Four people identified as A.T. (17), S.T. (17), Edanur
Taşkesen (19), Filiz Taşkesen (42) and Tülin Taşkesen (21) were detained
in dawn house raids in the city of Siirt on July 25, 2024 after they
were targeted by some racist social media users when a video showing
they are dancing halay to Kurdish music was shared on social media
platforms. Then, they were sent to prison on charges of <Propagandizing
for a (terrorist) organization>. The first hearing of the trial against
them was held at the Siirt 13th High Criminal Court on Friday. Members
of the Free Women’s Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinen Azad-TJA), Lawyers
Association for Freedom (ÖHD) and many people monitored the hearing. The
four people attended the hearing through Audio-Visual Information System
(SEGBIS) from Batman F-type Closed Prison. "We danced halay as we
usually dance at the wedding parties. We did not know that dancing halay
to Kurdish music was banned," Filiz Taşkesen said at the hearing. The
other defendants also said that they had not <propagandized> and
demanded their release and acquittal. The lawyers also demanded the
release and acquittal of their clients, stressing that any intervention
in the music played at wedding parties is the violation of freedom of
expression, the constitution and the convention on human rights. The

plan against the Yazidi community. The genocidal attacks on our
community continue in different forms. The enemy does everything to
destroy our community. The closure of the PADE is political. The PADE is
a legal political party representing the will of our community. Those
who decided to dissolve the PADÊ are the ones who signed the agreement
of October 9 (An agreement regarding Shengal signed by representatives
of the KRG and the federal government in Baghdad on October 9, 2020).
They now aim to silence us in politics because they do not want the
Yazidi community to participate in politics."
'The KDP poses a threat to Iraq'
If a political party must be dissolved, it should be the KDP (Kurdistan
Democratic Party) because it poses a threat to Iraq, said Riham Hico.
"We know that the KDP and the Turkish state were involved in this
decision. The aim of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad
slowly reveals itself. Iraq has no evidence proving that the PADE is
involved in any illegal acts. There are many political parties in Iraq
but the PADE is the only party that represents the will of people."
'The PADE operates a co-presidential system'
Riham Hico also mentioned the role of women in political parties in
Iraq. "Women have no role in any political parties in Iraq; their names
only remain on paper. They claim that they defend women's rights by
showing women during press conferences. But the system of the PADE is
different; it operates a co-presidential system which means that the
party is chaired by one woman and man."
'Closure of the PADE is a coup against the co-presidential system'
Riham Hico describes the decision taken by the Supreme Judicial Council
of Iraq as "a coup against the co-presidential system". "The council
decided to dissolve three political parties. These three political
parties operate the co-presidential system, combating gender-based
violence and injustice. As the TAJE, we evaluate this decision as a
decision against us, the Yazidi community."
'The PADE is the voice of the Yazidi community'
Calling on everyone to stand with the PADE, Riham Hico said, "The PADE
is the voice of the Yazidi community. The closure of the PADE will
silence all parties, intellectuals and the Yazidi community. Every
Yazidi must support the PADE. Everyone should know that the PADE
supported the Yazidi community during the genocide. Standing with the
PADE is standing with the Yazidis." >>
