About 1,300 Yazidi children still missing
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 1 , 2024
<<About 1,300 Yazidi children still missing, Save the Children says
The fate of about 1,300 of Iraq's missing Yazidi children remains
unknown 10 years on from the Islamic State genocide with thousands of
others still homeless, living in tents or amid rubble in Sinjar, Save
the Children said on Thursday.
News Center- 10 years have passed since ISIS committed a genocide
against the Yazidi community in Shengal on August 3,2014. The fate of
about 1,300 of Iraq's missing Yazidi children remains unknown 10 years
on from the Islamic State genocide with thousands of others still
homeless, living in tents or amid rubble in Sinjar, Save the Children
said on Thursday. According to some figures, ISIS killed 10,000 Yazidis
and abducted more than 10,000 Yazidi women and girls and displaced all
Yazidis living in Shengal between August 3, 2014 and 2017. Save the
Children also shared the stories of some Yazidis. Behat (17), one of
them, is still searching for his missing parents and siblings. "I held
my brother's hands tightly and I shouted at them (ISIS) not to take him
from me. I even shed tears, nonetheless he was taken away. They took him
and never brought him back. I didn't see him again," Behat told Save the
Children. "I haven't found any information about my parents. What I want
is to find out something about my mother and father.... for someone who
hasn't seen their parents for 10 or 11 years, it is so difficult to
remember their faces." Ten years on, about 200,000 Yazidis remain
displaced from their communities in Iraq, according to the UN's
International Organization for Migration (IOM). Many are still homeless,
living in tents in displacement camps with little access to adequate
education or healthcare.
'This tragedy and massacre is not forgotten'
Viyan (15) fled Sinjar as a toddler. She has been living in a tent in a
displacement camp in Iraq for almost a decade. "It is very difficult to
live in tents in the heat. In winters, with heavy rain, the tent gets
watery...Children have no place to play, they play in the streets, which
are full of stray animals... Children get diseases from the dirt.
Teenagers and little girls, even though they are around 10 years old,
always say that they wish they were dead and didn't have to live like
this. This tragedy and massacre that has happened to the Yazidi people,
it is not forgotten and even now when we go to Sinjar, the bones have
not been collected." 'I was also one of those who were captured with my
whole family' >>

2 Yazidi women and one child abducted
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 1 , 2024
<<2 Yazidi women and one child abducted by ISIS rescued by YPJ
The Women's Defense Units (YPJ) has announced that they rescued two
Yazidi women and a child abducted by ISIS in Shengal on August 3,2014.
News Center-The Women's Defense Units (YPJ) has announced in a statement
that they rescued two Yazidi women and a child abducted by ISIS in
Shengal on August 3, 2014. The women identified as Ezize Xalid Eli(25),
Tawaf Dawud Çeto (24) and the child identified as Xwunav were abducted
by ISIS and the child was only two months old when she was abducted by
ISIS, according to the statement. Ezize Xalid Eli from the Kocho village
of Shengal was rescued from al-Hawl camp while Tawaf Dawud Çeto from the
Til Ezer village of Shengal was caught trying to escape on the
Syrian-Iraqi border, the statement said, noting that the child named
Xwunav was raised by Ezize Xalid Eli. "The Women's Defense Units (YPJ)
has rescued hundreds of Yazidi women since 2014," said Lena Hisen,
Spokesperson of the YPJ Foreign Affairs Office. "The people of Shengal
have faced and resisted dozens of genocidal attacks. The Yazidi women
have paid the heaviest prices of these genocidal attacks. In 2014, ISIS
committed a genocide against the Yazidi community, abducting and raping
thousands of Yazidi women and selling them in slave markets. As the YPJ,
we, of course, see the protection of Shengal and the rescue of Yazidi
women as our primary duty. We have worked carefully to rescue the Yazidi
women held captive by ISIS for years."
'Revenge against ISIS'
"On the anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, the rescue of Yazidi women
is our greatest success and revenge against ISIS," YPJ Spokesperson
Ruken Cemal said, adding, "The YPJ will make great efforts until
rescuing all abducted Yazidi women." >>

The family of Feride Sengal
Jinha - Womens News Agency - August 1 , 2024 - by MEDYA HAWAR
<<Story of survivor of Yazidi genocide
"Forgetting the genocide is a betrayal of Yazidi history," said Feride
Şengali, a survivor of the Yazidi genocide committed by ISIS in 2014.
Shengal (Sinjar)- ISIS attacked Shengal on August 3,2014, killing and
abducting and displacing thousands. Some families managed to flee while
some were taken captive or killed by ISIS. The family of Feride Şengal,
member of the Diplomacy Committee at the Yazidi Free Women's Movement (TAJE),
was one of the Yazidi families taken captive by ISIS. The family living
in the village of Dugur was taken captive by ISIS three times but
managed to flee ISIS by using different tactics. Feride told NuJINHA
what they had experienced. Feride Şengali first commemorated those who
killed during the genocide. "First of all, I commemorate the fighters of
the YJA-STAR, HPG and YPJ-YPG, who lost their lives during the genocide.
They made the supreme sacrifice to rescue the Yazidi community," she
said. "They rescued thousands of Yazidis by opening a humanitarian
corridor. When we went to Rojava, the YPG and YPJ fighters welcomed us."
'We saw that Peshmerga and ISIS were together'
Feride Şengali told us how her family and she escaped from ISIS for the
second time. "We were first taken captive by ISIS in the town of Rabia.
We managed to escape from ISIS and went to the Shengal mountains. On the
second day of the genocide, many people and we decided to return to
their villages and then go to Rojava. First, three families left and
then they told us that they arrived in Rojava safely. We left the
mountains with 25 vehicles. On the way, we saw men in Peshmerga uniform.
We thought that the Peshmerga would rescue us. Despite their betrayal,
we thought that they were there to rescue us. When they blocked our way,
we saw ISIS members with them. 'If you have weapons or bullets, give us
them', they told us. We hid our weapons and did not give our weapons to
them." Then, ISIS members ordered them to follow them. "My mother told
my brother that if he found a way that led to our freedom, he must
follow that way. When my brother saw a safe way, he drove fast. ISIS
members followed us. When we saw a school and jumped out of the vehicle.
All we thought was not to be taken captive by ISIS. Our neighbor had a
6-month daughter. Her mother put her hand on her mouth because she was
crying. ISIS members were looking for us everywhere. We saw a big house
and a small house next to it. We entered the small one. I hid the
children under the beds and told them to remain silent if they saw ISIS
members. We were lucky because ISIS members did not enter the house. We
were the only family that were not taken captive by ISIS."
'I will never forget'
Ferida Şengali told us that she would never forget two things, "the
betrayal of the Peshmerga and how the guerillas rescued us. The Yazidi
community should never forget these. Forgetting the genocide is a
betrayal of Yazidi history." Ferida Şengali also told us how the
guerillas rescued them. "Thousands of Yazidis went to Rojava Kurdistan
thanks to the humanitarian corridor opened by the guerillas. On August
7, 2014, we heard that the guerrillas were on the way to a road between
the Dugur and Dohla villages and that they would rescue us. At that
time, one of my brothers worked in Sulaymaniyah. He called us and told
us that he supported the guerillas and they would definitely rescue us
and we heard the name of the PKK for the first time."
'I saw Egid Civyan'
Three days later, they heard that the guerillas arrived there but some
old mothers stayed in the village. "We did not know if these mothers did
not want to leave their village or their families had left them behind.
Some young people went to the village and bought the mothers. We had
only a vehicle for 21 people and had a long way to go. When we arrived
there, we saw the guerillas for the first time. Their uniforms and
weapons were different. I saw Egid Civyan there for the first time. He
smiled when he saw us. He was a Yazidi from Afrin and told us that they
would rescue us. Martyr Egid was the first guerrilla that I saw in my
life."
'I was very impressed by the female guerrillas'
Ferida Şengali also saw six female guerrillas there. "There were female
and male guerrillas. In a small house, many people gathered around the
guerillas. The female guerrillas were talking with us, giving us food
and water. It was the first time I saw women holding weapons. I was very
impressed by the female guerrillas." >>

Women of Dersim
Jinha - Womens News Agency - July 30 , 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Women of Dersim go to sleep thinking about cost of living
"We go to sleep thinking about the cost of living. People are condemned
to starvation," say women artisans in Dersim, who struggle not to take
down the shutters due to the economic crisis.
Dersim- The increase in the inflation rate in Turkiye causes the high
cost of living affecting everyone. Purchasing power has greatly fallen
due to the high cost of living. People struggle to put food on the table
while forgetting what luxury is. In Dersim, where people suffer from the
high cost of living, citizens earn a living from animal husbandry,
beekeeping and selling products. The women artisans in the city struggle
not to take down the shutters due to the economic crisis.
'I cannot buy meat for my child even once a week'
Nadide Yallı sells jewelry and clothes in the center of Dersim to earn a
living for her family. "I am a family counselor but I have sold jewelry
and clothes here because I could not find a job. This economic crisis
affects women the most because women shoulder the burden in all spheres
of life. Food prices have nearly tripled, compared to last year. Last
year, I paid 4,000 Turkish lira for the rent but now I pay 10,000
Turkish lira. I do not want to talk about the price of clothes and
housing because it is very expensive. I used to go home and rest but I
cannot do it anymore because I have to work more to earn a living for my
family. I have to work more to put food on the table. I do not know how
long we can endure this high cost of living. I have a 7-year-old
daughter and I cannot buy meat for her even once a week."
'I buy products with debt'
Zubeyde Delekçi is also an artisan in Dersim, selling clothes. "We
cannot sell clothes anymore because customers say that the clothes are
very expensive. The people living in other cities also suffer from the
high cost of living. I buy products with debt and pay it back by
borrowing money. We work for 14 hours every day but we cannot make ends
meet."
'We struggle to survive'
Sevim Saglam also complains about the high cost of living. "I clean
stairs to earn a living. The money I earn is insufficient to pay my
bills. We struggle to survive. My son is 30 years old but he sits at
home. Why? Because he is unemployed and cannot find a job."
'I go to sleep thinking about the cost of living'
"People are condemned to starvation in this country," said Diren Koç. "I
go to sleep thinking about the cost of living. The rich get richer and
the poor get poorer. I am the mother of three and always thinking of
earning a living for them. People in all cities suffer from the high
cost of living. As a mother and a woman, I struggle to survive but I am
exhausted. I have to think of tomorrow. Many artisans have already taken
down the shutters due to the economic crisis. I also thought about
taking down the shutters but I could not because I have to work for my
children." >>

Mother Erzan
Jinha - Womens News Agency - July 30 , 2024 - by Rojin Hebabi
<<Story of old Yazidi woman killed by ISIS
"She had seen in her dream that her own salvation was the annihilation
of her community, so she did not leave her home," said Şerin Şengali,
telling the story of Mother Erzan, who was killed by ISIS.
Shengal- ISIS committed a genocide against the Yazidi community on
August 3,2014, killing thousands of women and children. Mother Erzan was
one of these women. Although she saw in her dream that ISIS would commit
a genocide against the Yazidi community, she did not leave her home. She
was an old woman living alone. Şerin Şengali, one of the survivor of the
Yazidi genocide, told us the story of Mother Erzan and how she was
killed and burned by ISIS.
'She lived with the help of people'
Speaking about the personality of Mother Erzan, Şerin Şengali said,
"Mother Erzan was living alone in a house located between the Dugur and
Dohla villages. She lived with the help of people. Even though she knew
everyone in society, she isolated her from everyone. Mother Erzan was
called 'Pire (English: Grandmother)'. People often visited her to ask
questions because she could see the future. Mother Erzan was a poor
mother. Farmers often visited her to ask her if it would rain. Şerin
Şengali also witnessed that Mother Erzan saw the future. "Mother Erzan
had two tins of wheat. She gave those tins to a farmer, saying, 'Plant
these wheats this year'. The farmer told her to keep the wheats for
herself; however, she refused. It rained a lot that year and the wheat
harvest was very good."
'They burned her'
At the end of her speech, Şerin Şengali told us why Mother Erzan had not
escaped from the Yazidi genocide in 2014 as follows: "Mother Erzan saw
in her dream that ISIS would commit a genocide against the Yazidi
community. She could have saved her on the day when the genocide
started. Her house was located on the road between Dugur and Dohla
villages and most Yazidis escaped from ISIS by using that road. They
told her to go with them but she told them that she would not leave her
home because she had seen in her dream that her own salvation was the
annihilation of the Yazidi community. She did not leave her home and she
was killed and burned in front of her house by ISIS." >>

<<Morocco's King Mohamed VI pardons imprisoned journalists, activists
Morocco's King Mohammed VI pardoned three journalists, as well as an
activist and a historian on Monday to mark his 25th anniversary as
monarch. Rights groups criticised the journalists' detentions as
repressive tactics to silence critics. In total, 2,476 people were
pardoned. Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Monday pardoned three
journalists detained for years, as hundreds of prisoners saw their
sentences commuted to mark the monarch's 25th anniversary on the throne.
Omar Radi, Soulaimane Raissouni and Taoufik Bouachrine, as well as
historian and rights advocate Maati Monjib, were among the 2,476 people
pardoned, a government official said on condition on anonymity. Rights
groups including Reporters Without Borders (RSF) had denounced the
jailings of Radi and Raissouni, detained since 2020 on charges of sexual
assault they deny. Human Rights Watch has accused Morocco of using
criminal trials, especially for alleged sexual offences, as <techniques
of repression> to silence journalists and government critics. The
country's top court rejected in July 2023 the final appeals of two
journalists.
Morocco ranked 129th out of 180 countries on RSF's 2024 World Press
Freedom Index.
