<<Iran's Hamedi, Mohammadi Win US Award for their <Courageous
Journalism>
Jailed Iranian journalists Nilofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi have won
the 2023 Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism
for their <steadfast commitment to producing courageous journalism about
issues in Iran affecting women, including the September 2022 death of
22-year-old Mahsa Amini.> The winners were chosen by the Nieman
Foundation for Journalism's class of 2023 at Harvard University,
Massachusetts. Hamedi, a reporter for the Tehran-based Shargh Daily, and
Mohammadi of the daily newspaper Hammihan were arrested in September for
covering the events sur-rounding Amini's death in police custody, which
sparked an ongoing wave of nationwide protests against the country's
clerical esta-blishment. The two journalists are accused of <propaganda
against the system> and <conspiring to act against national security,>
charges that could carry the death penalty. This year's class of 24
Nieman Fellows selected Hamedi and Mohammadi because they believe their
work <honors the spirit> of the Lyons Award for Conscience and
Integrity. <Hamedi and Mohammadi put their livelihoods and lives on the
line, and lost their freedom in the process,> a statement said. <They
knew the grave risks they might face but remained committed to telling
Amini's story. Journalists in Iran are risking their lives on a daily
basis to report on the condi-tions and oppression there.> >>

<<Iranian Teachers Begin Persian New Year With Protests
Iranian teachers held protest rallies in several cities on March 28 to
draw attention to their low salaries and poor livelihood conditions.
Teachers took to the streets of Tabriz, Bojnord, Zanjan, Malayer,
Ardabil, Kermanshah and Hamadan as schools remained closed during the
holiday period marking Nowruz, the Persian New Year.
There were conflicting reports on whether teachers had received their
salaries for February/March. While the Minister of Education and Iranian
banking authorities claimed that all the salaries were paid, Tasnim news
agency reported that many teachers had not yet received the full
payments. In a statement published ahead of Nowrouz on March 21, the
Coordinating Council of Teachers' Syndicates emphasized its right to
protest and announced that it would continue to demand better working
conditions. The council also announced plans to create a database to
document incidents of harassment against teachers and students. Teachers
have taken to the streets across Iran in recent years to demand better
pay and working conditions. In response, the authorities have summoned,
detained and imprisoned demonstrators and activists. Declining living
standards, wage arrears and a lack of welfare support triggered unrest
in the summer of 2022, and the September death of a young woman while in
police custody breathed new life into protests.>>

<<Report: Russia Provides Iran With Digital Surveillance Capabilities
Russia has provided Iran with advanced digital-surveillance capabili-ties,
the Wall Street Journal reported on March 27, as the two coun-tries seek
to bolster cooperation in the field of security and defense.
....
, Moscow has provided Tehran with <communication-surveillance
capabilities as well as eavesdropping devices, advanced photography
devices and lie detectors.> The sources said that Russia <has likely
already shared with Iran more advanced software that would allow it to
hack the phones and systems of dissidents and adversaries.>
....
According to leaked documents analyzed by The Citizen Lab, a University
of Toronto-based research center, the Russian company PROTEI has begun
providing internet-censorship software to Iranian mobile-services
provider Ariantel. The Citizen Lab said in January that there is
evidence that the PROTEI tools are part of a developing mobile-phone
system that would <enable state authorities to direct-ly monitor,
intercept, redirect, degrade or deny all Iranians' mobile
communications, including those who are presently challenging the
regime.> The Iranian authorities, known for their harsh internet
censorship which includes banning thousands of websites, responded to
widespread anti-government protests sparked by the September 2022 death
of a young woman in police custody by imposing shut-downs and by slowing
down web traffic to stop the spread of videos and communications among
protesters. The authorities have also used digital surveillance tools to
track and arrest demonstrators.>>

<<Iranian Who Lost Eye In Protest Seen On Migrant Boat Heading To Greece
Zaniar Tondro, an 18-year-old Iranian protester who lost sight in one
eye after being by security forces, was allegedly filmed on a crowded
boat while trying to illegally migrate to Europe to seek medical treat-ment.
The video, which went viral on social media, purportedly shows Tondro
laying on a boat with a safety jacket on him and surrounded by other
migrants. The latest information about the boat came on March 25, when a
passenger said the Greek marine police were approaching. According to
activists, security forces fired at Tondro during protests in the
northwestern city of Piranshahr in November 2022. The young man lost
sight in his right eye after 11 pellets hit his head. Hundreds of
Iranians have sustained severe eye injuries after being hit by pellets,
tear gas cannisters, paintball bullets or other projectiles fired by
security forces amid a brutal crackdown on more than six months of
nationwide protests.>>

<<Amnesty International Denounces Double Standards On Human Rights
....
On Iran, the group said the authorities <responded to the unprecedented
uprising against decades of repression with unlawful force through live
ammunition, metal pellets, tear gas and beatings.> <Thousands of people
were arbitrarily detained and/or unfairly prosecuted solely for
peacefully exercising their human rights,> it added. Women, members of
the LGBT community and ethnic and religious minorities <suffered
intensified discrimination and violence,> and enforced disappearances,
torture and other ill-treatment were <widespread and systematic.> The
authorities imposed and/or carried out <cruel and inhuman> punishments
such as flogging and amputation, and increasingly used the death
penalty, while trials remained <systematically unfair.> <It is easy to
feel hopeless in the face of atrocities and abuses but throughout the
last year, people have shown we are not powerless,> said Agnès Callamard,
Amnesty International's secretary general. <We've witnessed iconic acts
of defiance, including Afghan women marching against Taliban rule and
Iranian women walking unveiled in public or cutting their hair to
protest compulsory veiling laws.> >>

<<Jailed Iranian Activist Mohammadi Calls For <End> Of The Islamic
Republic
Prominent Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has reiterated that she is
ready to testify <anytime> about the sexual abuse and acts of torture
inflicted to women incarcerated in Tehran's Evin prison.
Mohammadi, who is serving a long-term sentence in Evin, said in a
written message on March 27 that she is <not seeking amnesty> from the
Iranian government. Instead, she called for the <end of the Islamic
Republic.> The message was addressed to a meeting in Geneva organized by
human rights organization that was attended by Javaid Rehman, the UN
Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran. Speaking at
the Geneva-based Human Rights Council on March 20, Rehman said that
violations committed by the Islamic Republic in recent months as part of
a broader crackdown on anti-government protests may amount to crimes
against humanity.
Earlier this month, a fact-finding mission established by the council
called on individuals, groups and organizations to submit information
and documentation on human rights abuses committed by security forces in
their clampdown on the women-led protest movement.
<I am prepared, at anytime and anywhere, to testify about the abuse and
physical and sexual harassment of women and physical torture that occur
in prison and to stand as a witness against the regime's machinery of
lies,> Mohammadi said in her message.
According to the activist, the government has announced an amnesty for
prisoners to deceive Western governments and international human rights
institutions. Six women who were included in the amnesty and took off
their headscarves and chanted <death to the dictator> after their
release were summoned by the authorities, Mohammadi said. She added that
some prisoners who were supposed to be included in the amnesty were not
released due to opposition from security institutions. Mohammadi has
long been a vocal critic of the repressive government policies and human
rights violations in Iran. In a letter released from Evin prison earlier
this month, Mohammadi said she was willing to testify as a witness about
<physical sexual assaults and physical torture> in custody.>>
