These numbers show that women are not only being targeted for their activism, but also for their participation in peaceful protests. <<Iranian Political Prisoners Pay Tribute to Women's Struggle on IWD2023
Iranian political prisoners in Evin, Gohardasht and Central Karaj prisons sent messages on International Women’s Day, paying tribute to Iranian women in their 44-year struggle for freedom and equality.
Letter from Iranian political prisoners in Evin
In their letter from Evin Prison, a group of supporters of the opposition People's Mojahedin (PMOI/MEK) wrote:
<On International Women’s Day, we pay tribute to the brave women who rose up against the mullahs' misogynistic regime and laid down their lives for the Iranian people’s democratic revolution. We are speaking about a generation that has been forging ahead for 44 years in the battlefields and medieval prisons of the clerical regime.
<These valiant women have a brilliant history of overcoming the worst contradictions, setting role models for our country's women in their fight for change. From Tahereh Tolou with a dagger in her heart and blood-drenched body to a generation of women in the 1988 massacre who stood their ground to preserve their cause, to the generation of young women and girls who lead the protests today in the streets. <We are a generation of men in Iran who are proud of the emergence of such competent women at the forefront of the fight for freedom. Women like Fatemeh Amini, Azam Rouhi Ahangarn, and other women who stepped into the path of struggle during the disgraceful rule of the Pahlavi Dynasty, to the thousands of PMOI women who, under the leadership of Maryam Rajavi, represent Iranian women. As Mrs. Rajavi said, the clerical regime will be overthrown by these free and emancipated women.> >>

<<Femicide In Iran: Activist Group Says One Case Reported Every Other Day
A group of activists combating the phenomenon of femicide in Iran says it has documented 191 documented cases in 2022, equivalent to approximately one killing every other day, but the actual number is likely to be higher due to underreporting by family members and the authorities. In its annual report, published on March 8, StopFemicideIran (SFI), an initiative of the Alliance for Rights of All Minorities (ARAM), says the number of documented femicides - the killing of a woman or girl for their gender - increased by 17 percent compared to the previous year. SFI says this rise may be the result of <a higher tendency in the society to report cases and an increased rate of femicides implicating the Iranian Government.> The report comes amid months of nationwide protests demanding more freedoms and women's rights in Iran. The women-led protest movement was triggered by the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police. The victims of femicide are predominantly young women between the ages of 20 and 35, SFI says. In most cases, the victims' names are not publicly known, which SFI says <may be part of a strategy to either protect the affected families from societal repercussions or bury the identity of the victims.> The report points out that child marriage puts women and girls at risk of femicide. It cited the case of a man decapitated who his 17-year-old wife in February 2022, after she attempted to flee from their home <because she found herself in an abusive marriage to which she was forced to consent at the age of 12.> The report insists that femicide is not an ethnic or rural pro-blem. Most provinces witnessed incidents last year, and about one-third of all recorded cases were committed in Tehran. A similar num-ber of cases occurred in the eastern provinces of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Ilam, Khuzestan and Bushehr combined.>>

<<RSF Calls For Release Of Jailed Women Journalists
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls for the immediate and unconditional release of dozens of women journalists who are spending International Women's Day behind bars throughout the world. With 12 of them currently in Iranian custody, the country is the world's second biggest jailer of women journalists after China, according to the Paris-based media freedom watchdog. Of the 550 journalists and media workers who are currently imprisoned world-wide, 73 - more than 13 percent - are women, it said on March 8, adding that the proportion has doubled in the past five years.
<More women are reporting in the field, they are more visible in newsrooms, and they are also more likely to fall victim to relentless persecution in 14 countries around the world, especially China (with 21 women journalists in prison), Iran (12), Belarus (10), Vietnam (4) and Turkey (4),> it said in a statement. Women journalists have paid the price for being at the front line in the ongoing crisis in Iran, where 11 of them were arrested in the wake of nationwide protests triggered by the September death of a 22-year-old woman in the custody of morality police. Two women journalists, Nilofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, are accused of “propaganda against the system” and “conspiring to act against national security, charges that could carry the death penalty.>>

<<Jailed Iranian Activist Urges Women To <Conquer> The Streets
Prominent Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi has urged women to take to the streets across the country on International Women's Day to demand their basic rights be respected, amid more than five months of nationwide protests demanding fundamental economic, social and political reforms. <On Women's Day, conquer the street with female symbols,> Mohammadi said in a message on March 8 from Tehran's Evin prison where she is serving a long-term sentence.
<The hardships and challenges that we face in our daily lives, whether at home, in the bedroom, at the workplace or in the streets, have become a driving force for us to push beyond ourselves and fight for our rights.> The September 2022 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of morality police unleashed the biggest anti-government protests in Iran in years, with women and school-girls making unprecedented shows of defiance toward what Mohammadi called the country's <misogynistic government and male-dominated society.> Iran's clerical rulers have also faced growing public over a wave of poisoning attacks that have affected dozens of girls' schools across the country since the end of November. Some Iranians have suggested that the poisonings could be an attempt to force the closure of girls’ schools or a retaliation for students and women leading the demonstrations sparked by Amini's death. For more than four decades, women in Iran have been subjected to discriminatory treatment regarding employment, education and inheritance, among other things. All women must conceal their hair with a headscarf, or hijabs, while in public and wear loose fitting trousers under their coats. They have also been denied the right to divorce and seek custody of their children. American Iranian activist Masih Alinejad noted that this year's International Women's Day <has a different color because the courage of Iranian girls and women has crossed the borders and caused the admiration of the world.> <The breaths of the child-murdering government became numbered,> Alinejad tweeted. Speaking on the sidelines of a forum in Abu Dhabi, actor Nazanin Boniadi urged the world to back the protests in Iran calling, saying that despots fear nothing <more than a free and politically active woman.> The thing that is unprecedented is we're seeing 12-year-old girls, schoolgirls, come out into the streets saying, 'We don't want an Islamic Republic,'> she told The Associated Press. <The courage that takes is astounding. And that courage has been contagious.> >>

<<At least 3,953 women arrested in Iran since September 2022, report says
News Center- The International Women's Day is annually observed on March 8 by all women around the world. Every year, women take to the streets to demand their rights and fight gender-based violence and femicide. However, women are arrested in Iran for participating in protests. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has released a report including statistical information on the situation of women in Iran from March 2022 to March 2023. According to the report, at least 3,953 women were arrested in Iran during the protests from September 2022 to March 2023. Hrana identified 1,019 arrested women, 160 of them were female university students. <It is estimated that at least 66 women were killed in Iran during the protests. These numbers show that women are not only being targeted for their activism, but also for their participation in peaceful protests. The arbitrary arrests and detentions of women demonstrate that the government is willing to use excessive force to silence dissent,> the report said.
At least 2,003 women were reprimanded in different ways
The Hrana also reported that in the same period, at least 2,003 women were reprimanded in different ways, including being summoned to police authorities, due to the improper wearing of the hijab. <The mandatory hijab law in Iran is a clear violation of women's rights and freedom of expression. The fact that women are being punished for not adhering to the hijab law indicates that the government is imposing its religious beliefs on its citizens.>
<Honor> killings
The report also included the number of women who were killed in the name of <Honor>. The report said, <At least 15 women and 7 men were killed for <honor> reasons. <Honor> killings are a brutal practice in which women are murdered by their family members for brin-ging <dishonor> to their family. This practice is not only a violation of women's rights, but the practice also serves as a grave violation of human rights and the right to life.>
'2 women received death penalty'
The Hrana also reported that two women received the death penalty in the same period and <At least 14 female death-row inmates were executed in different prisons.> The report also said, <In the reporting period, 92 cases of closure of guilds and organizations have been reported due to non-observance of hijab by the owner or staff.
In this case, 62 reports of discrimination in social environments were reported due to women's gender. The closure of businesses and organizations due to non-observance of hijab laws is not only discriminatory but also negatively impacts the economic opportunities available to women.>
Poisoning in schools
<During the time period covered by this report, poisonous substances were used in organized attacks on schools, which primarily targeted girls' schools. Since the beginning of December 2022, at least 290 attacks on schools affecting at least 7,060 students have been reported. This number of affected students is exclusive to the 103 schools that have reported data in this regard,> the Hrana said in the report.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Arrested, Another Summoned Amid Media Crackdown
Iranian authorities have summoned journalist and photographer Aliya Matlabzadeh and arrested the editor of Qom News website, Ali Portabatabaei. The development comes amid a brutal crackdown by the authorities on five months of nationwide protests in which hun-dreds of people were killed and thousands of others were illegally detained, including dozens of journalists. Some of the journalists have been released, while others have been summoned or threa-tened and had their electronic equipment seized. Matlabzadeh was arrested in April 2022 during a raid on the house of prominent women's rights activist Narges Mohammadi. She was sentenced to three years in prison on charges of <gathering and colluding against the country's security> and <propaganda against the system.>
She was released from custody last month.
<25 days have passed since I was released, and during this time I received two notices to appear at the Evin courthouse...They have set five days to hand myself over,> Matlabzadeh said on March 5.
She did not provide further details.
In the central city of Qom, the security forces arrested Portabatabaei, who has covered the poisoning of hundreds of students at Iranian schools over the past three months.

<<Iranian Women Activists Set Out Demands For <Freedom, Justice>
A group of Iranian women's rights activists have released a statement demanding fundamental reforms that would bring <freedom and justice> in the country, amid more than five months of nationwide demonstrations against the country’s clerical establishment. In their March 5 statement, released three days ahead of International Women's Day, the activists called the women-led protest movement a <glorious symphony of struggle and courage.> They emphasized that the <Women, Life, Freedom> movement is a cry for freedom that emerged from the daily lives of women who are <denied basic human rights, including the right to their body, the right to dress, the right to work, the right to travel, the right to divorce, the right to inherit, the right to custody [of their children], etc.> The authors of the statement demand <the imme-diate cancellation of all death sentences and the unconditional release of all political prisoners.> They call for freedom of thought, speech, organization, protest, and an end to any form of censorship.
Their demands also include <the abolition of patriarchal and discri-minatory laws against women and LGBTQI Plus individuals, the right to determine one's own destiny and lifestyle, free, public healthcare and education, and appropriate care for the elderly and the disa-bled.> The widespread protests triggered by the September death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of morality police are seen as one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Repu-blic since the 1979 revolution. >>
