<<Protests In Iran's Kurdish Areas Met With Violence Amid Nowruz Holiday
Iran's armed forces have used shotguns and tear gas to disperse
anti-government protests in multiple western Kurdish towns and cities,
wounding dozens of people, as Iranians celebrated the Persian New Year.
Violent clashes occurred across Kurdistan province late on March 20,
including in Mahabad, Saqqez and Dehgolan, as residents attended
cultural and traditional events to mark Nowruz amid heavy security
presence, sources told IranWire. Iran has been swept by popular protests
demanding fundamental economic, social and political changes since the
September 2022 death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in police custody.
The women-led protest movement poses one of the most serious challenges
to the theocracy installed by the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Security
forces have killed more than 520 people and detained over 20,000 since
the demonstrations began, activists say. Following biased trials, the
judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the death penalty,
to protesters. The protests and clampdown on dissent have been
particularly intense in western Kurdish areas. Late on March 20, a
source in Mahabad said government armed forces fired pellets and tear
gas at citizens attending a ceremony in the city, injuring over 40
people, including women and children. The protestors chanted <Death to
Khamenei,> <Death to the dictator,> in reference to Supreme Leader Ali
Khamenei, and <Woman, life, freedom,> the main slogan of the protest
movement. An eyewitness said hundreds of people attending a Nowruz
ceremony in Mahabad's Chahar Cheragh area were violently dispersed,
while the protesters tried to resist the armed forces by throwing
stones. A Nowruz ceremony was also disrupted in Saqqez when security
forces firing pellets and tear gas at a crowd, inflicting injuries to a
number of people, sources told IranWire. The source said the protesters
were chanting slogans against the Islamic Republic when the security
forces opened fire, wounding at least five people. One woman was said to
have sustained serious injuries. According to a local source, hundreds
of people gathered at Amini's grave in Saqqez, despite a large security
presence.
....
More than 60 activists in the town have been summoned and threatened not
to hold such ceremonies over the past week, the source said.>>

<<No Nowruz Festivities For The Families Of Iranian Protesters Killed
Iranians traditionally mark Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with joyful
festivities and family gatherings.
They arrange for the occasion a haft-sin in their homes, a collection of
items whose Persian name begins with the letter <S> including green
sprouts, symbolizing rebirth and growth, and samanu, a sweet pudding
made from wheat germ that symbolizes sweetness and fertility. But this
year's Nowruz, which fell on March 20, was anything but joyful for the
many families who have lost their loved ones in the brutal crackdown by
the Islamic Republic on more than six months of nationwide protests.
IranWire and citizen journalists who work with us have asked some of
these grieving families how they were coping with their sorrow ahead of
the holiday period.
<I've Been Left Alone for the Rest of my Life'
Reza Shahparnia was shot dead by security forces on September 20 in the
western city of Kermanshah. He was one of the first demonstrator killed
after the eruption of the protest movement triggered by the September
death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody. <The moment this
horrible thing happened, our lives turned upside down. There is only
pain and more pain,> his twin sister Narges tells IranWire.
<The pain becomes more excruciating as the holiday approaches. This is
the first Nowruz without Reza. It's more tormenting because March 22 is
Reza’s birthday. It's the birthday of both of us. But there's no
birthday now. He's not here to say, 'Narges, happy birthday to us!' as
he did every year. I’ve been left alone this Nowruz and this birthday.
I've been left alone for the rest of my life. I'll never forgive the
cul-prit of this tragedy.> Narges planned to mark the birthday for her
lost brother and wanted to order a cake, but many confectionaries
refused to take the order. <They said they couldn't do write 'Woman,
Life, Freedom' [on the cake because they've been ordered not to do it
and their shops would be shut down if they do,> Narges said.
<I Had so Many Dreams for Him>
Esmail Shanbedi was a 29-year-old man who died in hospital on October
19, two weeks after sustaining injuries during protests in the central
city of Shiraz. Esmail worked as a mechanic and was the breadwinner of
his mother and two half-sisters.>>

<<Biden Pays Tribute To <Brave> Iranian Women At Nowrouz Celebration
US President Joe Biden has used a White House event celebrating Nowrouz,
the Persian New Year, to pay tribute to protesting Iranian women and
vowed to continue to hold Islamic Republic officials accountable <for
their attacks against their people.> Biden said on March 20 that he
wished the holiday would be a moment of <hope for women of Iran who are
fighting for their human rights and fundamental freedoms.> <The United
States stands with those brave women and all the citizens of Iran who
are inspiring the world with their conviction,> Biden told the audience.
He described the reception as the biggest White House Nowrouz
celebration to date.
Just before the US president and his wife, Jill Biden, hosted the event,

<<Violence Reported As Iranians Mark New Year With More Protests
Protesters returned to the streets across Iran overnight to call for the
downfall of the Islamic Republic, as Iranians marked Nowrouz, the
Persian New Year, amid more than six months of protests against the
clerical establishment. Clashes were reported between demonstrators and
security forces in western Kurdish areas, where the protest movement and
clampdown on dissent have been parti-cularly intense. Several people
were reportedly injured in Mahabad, where social media footage showed
armed forces firing directly at protesters. Pellets were fired at
peaceful protesters in Dehgolan. In a video shared on social media, a
crowd can be seen chanting <Death to the dictator,> in reference to
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, amid sounds of gunshot. In Bukan, people
set fires in the streets and chanted <woman, life, freedom,> the main
slogan of the protest movement. Demonstrators in Saqqez could be heard
chanting <Khamenei the Zahhak! We'll take you down into grave.> The
slogan was shouted by well-known civil rights activist Sepideh Qoliyan
when she was released on March 15 from more than four years in prison.
She was re-arrested hours later and sent back to Tehran's Evin prison.
The slogan referred to a mythical king said to have fed serpents growing
out of his shoulders with young people's brains. Tehran residents also
took to the streets in several areas despite a heavy presence of
security forces across the capital. Social media footage shows people
chanting anti-government slogans from balconies and roofs, while
Khamenei's annual speech was being broadcast on state TV after midnight.
<There were lots of armed and masked forces at the Tajrish roundabout
last night,> a resident said. <They prevented people from gathering, but
I could hear some chanting from their roofs.> >>

<<Jailed Activist's Nowruz Letter Calling On Iranians To <Reclaim Our
Iran>
Well-known human rights activist Bahareh Hedayat was arrested in early
October 2022 during nationwide protests triggered by the death in
custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She had been arrested and imprisoned
several times before. In a letter written from the women's ward of
Tehran's notorious Evin prison ahead of Nowruz, the Persian New Year,
Hedayat writes about the <irreplaceable losses> of the protests and
expresses her admiration for the demonstrators.
<It is my hope that my eighth spring in captivity will contribute to the
healing of the nation's wounds and its eventual salvation. I am prepared
to spend my life in service of the nation's will without complaint or
hesitation.>
The following is the letter written by Bahareh Hedayat:
***
As I will spend my eighth Nowruz in prison, my faith in victory is
stronger than ever. As the new year approaches, I sit at a Haft-seen
(ceremonial Nowruz table) and I reflect on the memories of this year,
which has irreversibly passed. My heart is filled with memories of
[protest victims] Mahsa, Nika, Sarina, Siavash, Abolfazl and Hamidreza,
and of my brothers Khodanour, Fereydoun Mahmoudi, Mohsen Shekari, Mehdi
Karmi, Mohammad Hosseini, and Majidreza Rahnavard. I also remember all
the Iranians seeking a normal life who took to the streets but perished
at the hands of the enemies of<woman, life, freedom.> I hold my neck
high, and I lift my head because I have had fellow citizens like these.
Nowruz is a reminder of our common destiny in a land where
discrimination, oppression and lack of human dignity have left deep
scars. It is our duty to remember Iran from the perspective of these
wounds. It is my hope that my eighth spring in captivity will contribute
to the healing of the nation's wounds and its eventual salvation. I am
prepared to spend my life in service of the nation's will without
complaint or hesitation.
I am ready to dedicate my life to freedom and justice for Iran if it's
my share of the world.>>
