<<Amnesty International condemns Iran’s compulsory headscarf crackdown
<The Iranian authorities are terrorizing women and girls by subjecting
them to constant surveillance and policing,> Amnesty International's
Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Diana Eltahawy said in a
press statement on Wednesday.
News Center- Ahead of International Women’s Day, Amnesty International
has released a press statement, condemning Iran for its crackdown
enforcing compulsory hijab laws. According to testimonies collected by
Amnesty International, tens of thousands of women have had their cars
arbitrarily confiscated as punishment for defying Iran’s veiling laws,
while others have been prosecuted and sentenced to flogging or prison
terms, or have faced other penalties such as fines or being forced to
attend <morality> classes. <In newly-collected testimonies from 46
people, 41 women, including a trans woman, one girl and four men, the
stark details are revealed over how a range of Iranian state agencies
are involved in persecuting women and girls or exercising their rights
to bodily autonomy and freedom of expression and belief,> the statement
said.
Amnesty International has released excerpts of 20 of the testimonies to
provide a glimpse into the frightening daily reality faced by women and
girls in Iran. At the time of publication, proceedings against six of
the women were ongoing. <In a sinister attempt to wear down resistance
to compulsory veiling in the wake of the ‘Woman Life Freedom’ uprising,
the Iranian authorities are terrorizing women and girls by subjecting
them to constant surveillance and policing, disrupting their daily lives
and causing them immense mental distress,> Amnesty International's
Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Diana Eltahawy said in the
statement. <The intensifying persecution of women and girls is taking
place just weeks before the UN Human Rights Council is set to vote on
extending a fact-finding mission with a mandate to investigate
violations since the death in custody of Mahsa/Jina Amini, particularly
against women and children.> >>

Moroccan women demand
Jinha - Womens News Agency 7 Mar 2024 - by HANAN HARITE
<<Morocco- Moroccan women struggle to end gender-based violence and
effective implementation of laws guaranteeing their rights. For 20
years, they have been struggling for the amendment of the family code,
also known as the <Moudawana> and the increase in women's political
participation. <Despite achieving many gains,> Moroccan women said,
<There is still a long way to go.>
'Morocco should ratify ILO Convention 190'
Women struggle not only on March 8 but also 365 days, said union
activist Saeeda Waed. <We continue to demand our rights. The Moroccan
government should ratify the ILO's Convention 190 protecting workers
from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and
harassment. The ILO Convention 190 has a number of provisions aiming to
eliminate gender-based violence at work. Trade unions and human rights
organizations made great efforts to combat all forms of violence at
work.>
'Women demand a new law'
Moroccan women hold workshops, meetings and seminars for the amendments
of Morocco's Law 103-13 on combating violence against women, human
rights activist Bushra Abdo told NuJINHA. <Women demand a news law that
will give women the status they deserve. Law 103-13 is a very old law;
it is insufficient to combat violence against women. It should be
amended. Moroccan citizenship law should be also amended because it
violates the rights of women who marry foreign men.>
'It is an important day for women to raise their voices'
Human rights activist Najat Al-Razi believes that women have achieved
many gains thanks to the struggle of women’s movements across the world.
She describes the International Women’s Day, March 8, as <A day of
struggle with enthusiasm to immortalize women's struggle for rights>.
<Because thousands of women garment workers in New York took to the
streets against wage discrimination and protested their working
conditions on that day. It is a day to remember the women struggling for
their rights. It is an important day for women to raise their voices
against gender-based violence and discriminatory laws.> >>

Seda Yanmış,
Jinha - Womens News Agency 7 Mar 2024 - by ELIF ÇETINER
<<Women to hold 21st Feminist Night March in Istanbul
Women will hold the Feminist Night March in Istanbul for the 21st time
on March 8. <This year, we have the same rebellion and anger again,>
said Seda Yanmış, member of Purple Solidarity.
Istanbul- Women have completed their preparations to celebrate the
International Women's Day; women across Turkey will take to streets to
voice their demands on March 8. In Istanbul, women have completed their
final preparations for the Feminist Night March at Taksim. As every
year, women will shout out their demands by participating in the march.
'We have a life to take back from them'
As every year, thousands of women holding a rally at Kadıkoy Iskele
Square on March 3 will gather at Taksim for the feminist night march on
the night of March 8. The representatives of women's organizations,
non-governmental organizations and political parties will also
participate in the march that started to be organized weeks ago. In an
interview with NuJINHA, Seda Yanmış, member of the Purple Solidarity
(Turkish: Mor Dayanışma, a women's organization in Turkey), talked about
what women do to organize the march. <This year, we have the same
rebellion and anger again,> she said at the beginning of her speech. <We
call on all women to participate in the march by remembering and
reminding them that we will not give up our gained rights they try to
take from us, we have a life to take back from them.>
'This is a life and death fight'
Recalling that one year has already passed since the earthquakes that
struck Turkey on February 6, Seda Yanmış said, <We will celebrate the
International Women's Day with a heavy heart but full of struggle. Last
year was a difficult year for women as well as for working people. It
was a difficult year for the entire population due to the economic
crisis and the elections and the devastating earthquake. It was also a
difficult year for the women's movement; women were always in solidarity
with the quake survivors. Women, feminists, socialists and
revolutionaries were in solidarity with the quake survivors in the
cities affected by the earthquake while the state was not there. In the
earthquake zones, violence against women increases every day. In 2023,
about 400 women were killed by men and many more died under suspicious
circumstances. Although the situation of women is getting worse day by
day, the number of women struggling against it also increases. As we
face more oppression, we know that we must raise our voices more because
this is a life and death fight.>
'March 8 is not just a day of the year'
March 8 is not just a day of the year, Seda Yanmış said, <Women struggle
for 365 days and they show up their struggle throughout the year on
March 8. Each March 8 actually has a different spirit with enthusiasm
and joy.>
'We will take Taksim back'
Pointing to the increasing arbitrary practices by the government, she
said, <You know, the feminist night march in Istanbul has been banned
for several years due to arbitrary and unlawful practices. We always say
that we will not give up our gained rights that they try to take from
us. We saw how they increased the dose of violence last year on November
25; dozens of women were detained. On March 8, we will take Taksim back
and turn it into a square full of our enthusiasm, joy and resistance. As
every year, we will be at Taksim Square on March 8.> Seda Yanmış
concluded her speech by calling on all women to <participate in the
Feminist Night March at Istanbul's Taksim Square on March 8. We have
actually been preparing for the Feminist Night March for weeks. We have
made contact with women from everywhere to invite them to the march. For
us, March 8 is more than a day of the year.> >>

Freedom of expression is in peril
Jinha - Womens News Agency 6 Mar 2024
<<'Freedom of expression is in peril in Turkiye'
<Freedom of expression is in peril in Turkiye, with journalists, human
rights defenders and civil society operating in a critically hostile
environment,> said a memorandum released by the Council of Europe.
News Center- The Council of Europe released a memorandum on freedom of
expression and of the media, and the situation of human rights defenders
and civil society in Turkiye. <The deterioration of freedom of
expression in Turkiye has reached new, deeply worrying levels,
characterized by numerous blatant violations of human rights standards,>
read the memorandum.
'It leaves an increasingly deep mark'
As time goes by with the authorities failing to address these
violations, the damage caused to media freedom and freedom of expression
in Turkiye leaves an increasingly deep mark, leading to self-censorship
by journalists and independent media, the memorandum read. <The judicial
actions targeting journalists, civil society, human rights defenders and
lawyers remain the most worrying manifestation of continuous and
concerted pressure exerted in a deliberate attempt to silence critical
voices and to prevent them from reporting on ongoing human rights
violations in Turkiye>, said the Council of Europe Commissioner for
Human Rights, Dunja Mijatovic. <The authorities should remedy this
highly detrimental situation and create an enabling environment for the
exercise of freedom of expression and of the media and freedom of
association.>
'The International Women's Day march has been banned for eight years'
The right to freedom of peaceful assembly has also been seriously
undermined by systematic bans, heavy-handed policing, including the
excessive use of force, mass arrests and the frequent use of criminal
charges against demonstrators. Bans have particularly targeted events
organized by or in support of LGBTI people, women and environmental
human rights defenders. <The authorities should investigate all cases
where excessive use of force has been used against participants of
peaceful assemblies organised in recent years despite the bans. It is
particularly regrettable that the International Women's Day march in
Istanbul has been banned for the last eight years.>
'It is essential for the Turkish authorities to revise restrictive laws'
The Commissioner also points to the existential risk to the rule of law
and to the respect for all human rights guaranteed under the European
Convention on Human Rights posed by longstanding problems with regard to
the independence and impartiality of the Turkish judiciary.
The commissioner said, “To bring about meaningful change, it is
essential for the Turkish authorities to engage constructively with
civil society, review and revise restrictive laws, free human rights
defenders, journalists, activists, and others who are imprisoned for
exercising their freedom of expression, respect and implement the
judgements of the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human
Rights and ensure impartiality and independence of the judiciary.> >>

In memory of Jina Amini
Jinha - Womens News Agency 6 Mar 2024 - by GILARI GILANI
<<'We are in solidarity with all resisting women'
Women of Kermanshah are getting ready to take to the streets on March 8.
<March 8 is a day of resurrection against darkness,> said political
activist H.G. from Kermanshah, emphasizing that they are in solidarity
with all resisting women.
Kermanshah- Women in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan are getting ready to
take to the streets on March 8, International Women's Day, with the
spirit of resistance. The women of Kermanshah have been leading the
'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' uprising that sparked in Eastern Kurdistan and Iran
following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called <morality
police> in Tehran.
Message of solidarity
Political activist H.G. from Kermanshah sent a video message to NuJINHA.
<As women of Kermanshah, we are with all our people on March 8,> she
said in the video message. <We express our solidarity with the women
fighters, who resist discrimination and exploitation and fight for
women's freedom in the streets, prisons, at homes or on the
battlefields, at factories and universities, and we send our greetings
to them.>
'We will no longer remain silent'
Pointing to the women’s roles on March 8, she said, <March 8 has a
powerful impact on the strength and expansion of women's united struggle
all around the world. March 8 has become a symbol of the fight against

will no longer remain silent against violence, discrimination and
historical exploitation against women.> Pointing to the resistance of
political prisoner Zeynab Jalalian in Iran and Kurdish politician Sakine
Cansız, who was murdered in Paris, she said, <As women of Kermanshah, we
will follow in their footsteps. Thanks to the resistance of women such
as Sara and Zeynab, the women's struggle has reached this point today.
We will keep resisting until freedom, equality and real democracy are
achieved.>

Edibe Paksoy
Jinha - Womens News Agency 6 Mar 2024
<<Women in Makhmour to celebrate IWD with spirit of struggle
<Women will celebrate International Women’s Day with the spirit of
struggle,> said Edibe Paksoy, a teacher in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem
Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp).
Makhmour- This year, women all over the world will take to the streets
on March 8 to voice their demands against all forms of gender-based
violence, the patriarchal mindset, genocidal attacks and injustice by
chanting the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' slogan. In the Makhmour Martyr Rustem
Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp), women are ready for International
Women's Day. Women have played important roles in the camp for 30 years.
Since March 8, 2023, they have been on the frontline of the resistance
against the patriarchal mindset, the Turkish attacks, the ambitions and
obstacles of the KDP and the attacks of the Iraqi government. In an
interview with NuJINHA, Edibe Paksoy, a teacher at the Martyr Jiyan High
School, talked about the importance of March 8 and the one-year struggle
of the women in the camp.
'It is based on women's freedom'
Indicating that March 8, International Women’s Day, is an important day
for all women, she said, <Women garment workers in New York held a
protest for their rights. They were attacked and then killed in a fire
at the factory. Since then, women have been taking to the streets on
March 8. Women's rights were guaranteed when leader Apo (Abdullah Ocalan)
founded the PKK. Setting off with the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' slogan, leader
Apo said, 'a country can't be free unless the women are free'. Thus,
women led the revolution in Rojava. Our freedom movement is based on
women's freedom.>
'Women play a leading role in all our institutions'
Speaking about the role of women in the Makhmour Refugee Camp, she said,
<As women, who grew up and struggle with the thoughts and the philosophy
of leader Apo, we are aware of how women's freedom is important. In the
camp, women have been waging an active struggle for years; there has
been a great resistance in the camp for 30 years and women have played
the most important role in this resistance. Women play a leading role in
all our institutions. Women can be more successful when they do what
they love.>
'Women will celebrate IWD with the spirit of struggle'
Edibe Paksoy concluded her speech saying, <Despite all the attacks,
women have achieved many successes in the camp for 30 years thanks to
the thoughts and the philosophy of leader Apo. In the camp, women will
celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 with the spirit of
struggle. We wish a happy International Women's Day to all women.> >>

Amed ready for March 8 rally
Jinha - Womens News Agency 6 Mar 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Amed ready for March 8 rally: We will carry this enthusiasm to March
31
<We will carry this enthusiasm to March 31,” said women, who are getting
ready for the rally to be held in Amed on March 8, International Women's
Day.
Amed (Diyarbakır)- Women have organized activities, events and protests
in Turkish and Kurdish cities to mark the International Women's Day. In
Kurdish cities, the Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera Jinên
Azad-TJA) will organize rallies on March 8. One of these rallies will be
held in Amed. Women, who will participate in the rally at Amed’s
Istasyon Square, will also celebrate Newroz on March 21 and cast their
votes in the local elections to be held on March 31 with the same
enthusiasm. In Amed, where the activities and events for International
Women's Day will last a week, women visit home by home to invite women
to participate in the rally led by Dicle Amed Women’s Platform (DAKAP)
with the motto, <Towards Freedom with Jin, Jiyan, Azadi'>. <Let's stand
side by side and demand our freedom,> DAKAP members said.
'We should unite and be in solidarity'
In her speech, Fatma Beyoglu first talked about the upcoming local
elections. <As women, we should unite against the patriarchal and
monistic government in the elections. There are serious burdens on us,
women. We are subjected to attacks and our gains are under constant
attack. We want women to be free and organized.> She also talked about
International Women's Day and said, <On March 8, we defend our rights
and raise our voices against the attacks. We are getting ready for both
the elections and March 8 with great enthusiasm and excitement. With
this enthusiasm, we will unite and celebrate International Women's Day
and go to the polls to send back the misogynistic trustees. As women, we
should unite and be in solidarity.>
'We will take to the streets with our colors and our voices'
<When spring comes, the activities of women intensify,> Elif Turan said,
<On March 8, we will flock to the streets with the same hope and
determination. We will voice our demands. We will take our gains back
with our own strength and will. I call on all women of Amed to
participate in the rally on March 8. Women are always attacked and
targeted and women should unite against these attacks. The appointed
trustees, who have usurped local governments, have been attacking
women's gains for eight years because they want to destroy the
co-presidency system and the unity of women. We have not bowed to these
attacks for years and we will not bow to them. We will work 24 hours
during this month. We will unite and raise our voices against all kinds
of oppression.>
'Women will send the trustees back'
Nesibe Haran told us that they started their activities days ago. <We
expect great enthusiasm and participation. All women should take to the
streets on March 8 for their rights. There is no life without women.
Both men and the state aim to deprive women of life. As women, we demand
freedom and peace. Today, political prisoners are on a hunger strike and
our young people are killed. The trustees appointed to our
municipalities have usurped all women's organizations and centers. On
March 31, we will send the trustees back.>
'We should flock to the streets'
In her speech, Leyla Eleftoz Baran called on all women to participate in
the rally on March 8. <We will carry the enthusiasm of March 8 to March
21 and March 3. As women, we organize ourselves in all facets of life.
We will always organize ourselves and be in solidarity with each other.
I call on all women to flock to the streets on March 8 to voice their
demands.> >>
