Jinha - Womens News Agency 22 Feb 2024 - by NAGHAM KARAJEH
<<People of Gaza expect radical solutions that guarantee permanent
ceasefire
Suffering from the ongoing war, the lack of food, medications and
deteriorating economic conditions, the people of Gaza expect radical
solutions that guarantee a permanent ceasefire.
Gaza- The ongoing war and siege on the Gaza Strip, the lack of security
and humanitarian aid deteriorate the already difficult living conditions
of the people. Women of Gaza struggle not only from hunger but also
bombs thrown on them. Almost every day, international organizations
release statements condemning the war on Gaza while the Israeli army
keeps attacking the people. Many organizations say that Israel uses
hunger as a weapon in its attacks on Gaza. Moreover, the people of Gaza
suffer from infectious diseases. <The effects of the war on women and
girls are visible. They face extreme difficulty in securing their basic
needs,> said Zarifa Al-Bilbisi, one of the women living in the Gaza
Strip. <Due to the deteriorating economic conditions, the high prices of
goods and the lack of basic services, women and girls struggle to
survive. <They suffer not only from the deteriorating economic
conditions but also psychological pressures on them. This brutal war is
taking place between military forces and defenseless civilians.> The
people of Gaza also struggle to survive in winter weather. <Without
ensuring justice and peace, the situation of women and girls in the Gaza
Strip will not improve,> Zarifa Al-Bilbisi said, <We want to feel safe
and have more humane conditions. This war must end. Women and girls of
Gaza are subjected to all forms of violence. Where are the global
slogans against all forms of violence against women? Five months have
already passed but the war continues without interruption. All
international conventions that guarantee women’s rights become invalid
in Gaza.>
Zarifa Al-Bilbisi suffers from many health problems such as diabetes and
hypertension. <I used to follow a diet for diabetes and hypertension.
However, I cannot follow it now because I have to eat whatever I find.
Since October, more than 35% of diabetes and hypertension patients have
lost their lives due to the lack of medical care services, medications
and malnutrition.>
Call on the international community
In her speech, Zarifa Al-Bilbisi called on the international community,
humanitarian aid and human rights organizations to <provide the
necessary assistance to defenseless civilians and improve their living
conditions. Women and children need psychological and social support.
Women should be supported because they are the breadwinners of their
families and the most affected groups in this war. We expect radical
solutions that guarantee permanent ceasefire.> >>

<<No Kurdish in multi-language tourism ad in Urmia
The multi-language tourism ad prepared by the Heritage, Handicrafts and
Tourism Department of Urmia spark anger among people because the Kurdish
language is not among these languages.
Urmia- The Kurdish language is spoken by the majority population in
Eastern Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan). Several days ago, the General
Director of the Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department of Urmia
launched a tourism advertising campaign to promote the city as a tourist
attraction. The tourism department prepared a multi-language tourism ad:
Persian, Turkish, Azerbaijani, English, Chinese, Hindi and Arabic. The
multi-language ad sparks anger among the people of Urmia because the
Kurdish language is not among these seven languages. <Many tourists
visiting Urmia are from Bashur Kurdistan (Southern Kurdistan) and Basur
Kurdistan (Northern Kurdistan),> said Roya M., who works as a translator
at a hotel in Urmia. <Most of them travel to Urmia for medical care or
business and look for translators who are fluent in Kurdish. The Kurdish
language should have been used in the ad campaign.>
'Many medical tourists are Kurdish'
<Urmia is one of the most tourist destinations,> said Samira Sharif, who
works for a private hospital in Urmia. <Most of hospital staff are
Kurdish and many medical tourists are Kurdish.> Kosar Rahimi exports
food products from Urmia to other parts of Kurdistan. <Speaking Kurdish
is important for our business. If you are Kurdish or speak Kurdish, you
always find more buyers.>
'The Kurdish language is one of the most effective languages in the
tourism industry'
Leila M. is an activist in Eastern Kurdistan. Pointing out that many
people come from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for medical care, she
said, <They speak Kurdish. Most people in Urmia speak Kurdish and
middle-aged Kurdish people cannot speak Persian so they face many
problems at hospitals. The Kurdish language is not among the seven
languages in the ad. The Kurdish language has been targeted by
assimilation policies for years. The Kurdish language is one of the most
effective languages in the tourism industry of Urmia. It should be used
in the ad campaign.> >>

<<Turkish overcrowded prisons: Prisoners sleep in turn
In Manisa Akhisar Prison, political prisoners sleep in turn due to
overcrowded prison.
Amed (Diyarbakır)- The hunger strike started by political prisoners
across Turkey on November 27, 2023 to demand <freedom for Abdullah
Ocalan and a resolution to the Kurdish question> continues. Since the
hunger strike started, political prisoners have been subjected to more
rights violations; the hunger strikers have been given disciplinary
punishments and they cannot access their basic needs in some prisons.
Akhisar Closed Prison in Manisa is one of them. Kadriye Sirek's son
Şevder Sirek is a political prisoner held in Akhisar Closed Prison.
<Political prisoners cannot even find a space to sleep,> said Kadriye
Sirek, pointing to the overcrowded prisons. <32 political prisoners are
held in a single ward. They sleep in turn. My son has been held in
prison for nine years. Although he has already completed his sentence,
he has not been released from prison for six months for exhibiting 'bad
behavior'.>
'Some have to sleep on the ground'
Speaking about rights violations faced by political prisoners, Kadriye
Sirek said, <Some have to sleep on the ground while some sleep in turn
because there is no space. They often are not given food or they are
given dirty food. The clothes we send to prison are also thrown away by
wardens. Hot water is not provided to political prisoners to take a
shower. These violations must end now. Our children do not even have
water in the prison. This oppression will definitely end.>
'My son has not been released for six months'
Although her son has already completed his sentence, he has not been
released for six months. <I have gone to the prison for years to see my
son. My son has been behind bars for years. Although my son has already
completed his sentence, he has not been released for six months. He has
not been released from prison because he does not say ‘I regret’. Not
only my son but also hundreds of political prisoners are not released
from prison on the same excuse. We demand the release of our children.>
'Social peace must be built'
Kadriye Sirek pointed to the hunger strike started by political
prisoners and their families and said, <The key to peace is being held
in Imrali prison. The demands of the political prisoners must be met
now. Social peace must be built. As families of the hunger strikers, we
hold a sit-in here to end the isolation and torture against them. People
should support us to be the voices of prisoners. We must unite to ensure
peace.> >>

Infectious diseases spreading
Jinha - Womens News Agency 20 Feb 2024 - by SALMA AL-RASHID
<<Infectious diseases spread in Sudan’s overcrowded camps
Women and children, who have been displaced by the ongoing conflict in
Sudan and taken shelters in camps, suffer from the lack of toilet,
hygiene, medicine, food and health problems. Infectious diseases spread
in the overcrowded camps.
Sudan- On April 15, 2023, violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese
Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in
Sudan, resulting in the displacement of nearly eight million people,
including internally displaced people, asylum seekers and refugees.
According to reports, Six million Sudanese are displaced within Sudan,
while 1.7 million more have fled across borders into neighboring South
Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Egypt, the Central African Republic and Libya.
1,537 displaced people, including 500 women and 350 children have taken
shelter in the dormitory complex camp for female students at Red Sea
University, located in the city of Port Sudan. They suffer from
difficult conditions in the complex. NuJINHA spoke to displaced women
taking shelter in the camp.
'359 families stay in the camp'
<This camp is the biggest camp in the Red Sea State,> said Rumah Musa
Hassan, the camp supervisor. <About 359 families stay in the camp. The
complex began to host the displaced people last year in August. Some of
the displaced people taking shelter in the camp later fled to Comoros,
Nigeria and Syria.>
'Infectious diseases are spreading'
Speaking about the problems faced by displaced people in the camp, she
said, <The lack of hygienic supplies cause the spread of infectious
diseases in the camp. We have recorded many cases of cholera and deaths.
Women suffer from anemia due to the lack of safe drinking water in the
camp. The ongoing conflict has deteriorated the living conditions of
displaced women, who have lost their livelihoods.>
'Some women sleep on the ground'
Nour Abdel Latif is one of the displaced women in the camp from
Khartoum. Speaking about the deteriorating living conditions in the
camp, she said, <The humanitarian organizations led by UNICEF provided
only three tents to the displaced people. The camp is overcrowded and
three tents are insufficient. Many women live outside without a shelter.
They sleep on the ground. Some local organizations gave them
humanitarian aid boxes containing some basic supplies.>
She suffers from cancer
Zubaida Othman left her village, Jebel Aulia, in the north-central part
of Sudan with her mother, grandmother and three children when they were
told to evacuate the village. They first took shelter in the state of Al
Jazira and then in a school in the city of Wad Madani. Before taking
shelter in the camp at university, they stayed in the state of Sennar
for several days. <When we reached Sennar, I felt very tired. I am a
cancer patient and need treatment; however, the hospital in Sennar
refused to treat me because I could not cover the expenses.> Zubaida
Othman has been suffering from cancer for five years. Due to the
deteriorating living conditions in the camp, she cannot get chemotherapy
regularly. <I have to take medications; however, they are very
expensive.>
They had to leave their house
Zainab Al-Samani is one of the displaced women from the city of Nyala.
Her house in Nyala was very close to a military outpost and it was
destroyed in the clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the
paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). <We had to leave our city when
our house was destroyed. Our neighbors and relatives were killed in the
clashes that erupted between two parties. I decided to take my family to
a safer place.> Speaking about the living conditions in the camp, she
said, <Due to poor hygiene, cholera is spreading in the camp. No
precaution is taken to stop the spread of infectious diseases in the
camp. Hospitals do not provide any support to displaced women. Women
suffer from the lack of toilets, hygiene, medicine, food and health
services. Humanitarian aid organizations and government agencies should
provide support to women and children in the camp.>
'I demand job opportunity'
The clashes that erupted in Khartoum last year in April spread fear
among civilians and many left their homes to seek a safer place. Mona
Al-Ali is one of them. She left her home in Khartoum with her two
children. <Our journey was not easy,> she said. <After a difficult
journey, we arrived at the camp. Now, we suffer from the deteriorating
living conditions in the camp. Now, I have no income to cover the
expenses of my children. I demand job opportunities to cover our
expenses.> A woman named Maryam had to leave her home in Al Haj Yousif
when clashes erupted between two forces. <We left our home to search for
a safer and more stable place. I call on the authorities to provide
education opportunities for children in the camp.>
'I cannot sleep'
Children pay the heavy price of the war in Sudan. Maryam Ismail is one
of them. <I cannot sleep because the camp is overcrowded. I still hear
the sound of clashes. I had to walk for days to reach the camp. Then, we
found a truck and came to the city of Port Sudan.> >>

Malnourished children
Jinha - Womens News Agency 20 Feb 2024
<<UNICEF: One in six children under two are acutely malnourished in Gaza
One in six children the age of two is acutely malnourished in the
northern Gaza Strip, UNICEF said in a press release on Monday.
News Center- As the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip enters its 20th
week, food and safe water have become incredibly scarce and diseases are
rife, compromising women and children’s nutrition and immunity and
resulting in a surge of acute malnutrition. On Monday, UNICEF issued a
press release on the results of the Nutrition Vulnerability and
Situation Analysis in Gaza. <The report finds that the situation is
particularly extreme in the Northern Gaza Strip, which has been almost
completely cut off from aid for weeks. Nutrition screenings conducted at
shelters and health centres in the north found that 15.6 per cent - or 1
in 6 children under 2 years of age - are acutely malnourished. Of these,
almost 3 per cent suffer from severe wasting, the most life-threatening
form of malnutrition, which puts young children at highest risk of
medical complications and death unless they receive urgent treatment. As
the data were collected in January, the situation is likely to be even
graver today,> UNICEF said.
Five per cent of children under two are acutely malnourished in Rafah
According to the report, five per cent of children under two are acutely
malnourished in the Southern Gaza Strip, in Rafah, where aid has been
more available. <This is clear evidence that access to humanitarian aid
is needed and can help prevent the worst outcomes. It also reinforces
agencies' calls to protect Rafah from the threat of intensified military
operations.> The report finds at least 90 per cent of children under
five are affected by one or more infectious diseases. Seventy per cent
had diarrhoea in the past two weeks, a 23-fold increase compared with
the 2022 baseline.
<Hunger and disease are a deadly combination,> said Dr Mike Ryan,
Executive Director of WHO's Health Emergencies Programme. <Hungry,
weakened and deeply traumatized children are more likely to get sick,
and children who are sick, especially with diarrhea, cannot absorb
nutrients well. It's dangerous, and tragic, and happening before our
eyes.> UNICEF, WFP and WHO call for safe, unimpeded and sustained access
to urgently deliver multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance throughout
the Gaza Strip.>>

Committees established in seven cities by the Missing Persons Committee
(MPC) in North and East Syria have been setting up a database of the
people who went missing in the Syrian civil war.
Qamishlo- Syria's twelve years of conflict, the oppression of the Syrian
government, the ongoing Turkish attacks and the existence of ISIS cause
many humanitarian crises in North and East Syria. Hundreds of people
have been missing in North and East Syria for years due to the attacks
of ISIS and the Turkish state. The Missing Persons Committee (MPC) was
established in August 2023 by the Autonomous Administration of North and
East Syria (AANES) to report and identify missing persons in North and
East Syria. NuJINHA spoke to Nisrîn Hisên, lawyer and a member of the
MPC, about their activities.
MPC established committees in seven cities
The MPC established committees in Qamishlo, Hasakah, Der ez-Zor, Kobane,
Raqqa, Manbij and Shahba to set up a database of missing persons. <The
committees in Qamishlo, Raqqa and Hasakah have meetings with families on
Saturday and Sunday to identify the missing persons,> Nisrîn Hisen told
us.
'Cooperation is needed to find the missing persons'
Many people went missing in the Syrian civil war that has lasted for 12
years, Nisrin Hisen emphasized. <During wars, civilians are subjected to
all kinds of violations. Many people have gone missing in North and East
Syria due to the attacks of ISIS and the Turkish state. We ask families
to fill out forms to identify the missing persons. We have been working
on setting up a database of missing persons. Cooperation is needed to
find the missing persons.>
'My son has been missing for 10 years'
Heda Ehmed Başa lives in the Hamedan village of Tell Hamis, a sub
district of Qamishlo. In 2014, her 30-year-old son, Hewas Necim, went
missing near the M4 Highway while fighting ISIS. She is now a member of
the MPC. <My son has been missing for 10 years. I became a member of the
committee because I want to learn what happened to my son. I want to
learn if he is alive or dead. There are hundreds of families looking for
their loved ones. Hundreds of men, women and children are missing in
North and East Syria.> On February 10, the committee established in
Qamishlo began to have meetings with the families of the missing. Until

<<7,020 child soldiers killed in Yemen since 2014
During the war in Yemen from 2014 until the end of 2023, 7,020 children,
who were used as soldiers, were killed in Yemen, according to a Yemen's
human rights organization.
News Center- Since September 2014, Yemen has been suffering from
conflict, displacing over four million people and killing at least
150,000 people. On Sunday, Yemen's Mayyun Organization for Human Rights
released a report on child soldiers in Yemen to mark the International
Day against the use of Child Soldiers, annually observed on February 12.
The report said that the organization had monitored the killing of 7,020

<<TBD: Platform combats sexual violence in Algeria
Tomorrow is a Better Day (TBD Algeria) is a platform founded by women to
combat all forms of violence against women, especially online violence,
in Algeria.
Algeria- Lina Farah Cheboub founded Tomorrow is a Better Day (TBD
Algeria) in 2020 to combat sexual harassment and abuse against women and
children on social media platforms since the number of victims of online
violence is on rise in Algeria. <I founded the platform to combat all
forms of violence against women and girls, especially sexual and online
violence. The aim of the platform is to raise awareness among women and
children about the potential online risks and threats to women and
children,> said Lina Farah Cheboub.
'Silence encourages the perpetrators'
In Algeria, sexual harassment and sexual violence are normalized by its
patriarchal society. <Victims of sexual assault remain silent because
they are afraid that we will be blamed for being sexually assaulted or
raped,> said Lina Farah Cheboub. In Algeria, the law allows rapists to
escape prosecution by marrying the victims of rape. <The victims of rape
remain silent because the perpetrators receive no penalties. There is a
silence against sexual assault in Algerian society and this silence
encourages the perpetrators of sexual assault. Many women are sexually
abused in public spaces and online every day.>
Online campaign
The TBD Algeria is an online platform aiming to raise awareness among
women and girls about the online risks. Last year, the platform launched
an online campaign called, <Expose Harassers>. <After we launched the
campaign, many users of social media platforms supported the campaign by
posting videos documenting sexual harassment and abuse against them in
public spaces, at workplaces and schools. We believe that exposing the
harassers and abusers is the most appropriate solution to deter them and
end the silence.> The TBD Algeria also provides psychological and legal
support to survivors of all forms of violence against women. <The
platform has psychologists and lawyers to support the survivors of
violence. We raise awareness among many women and girls, and encourage
them to report attacks and expose harassers and abusers.> Last year,
more than 200 survivors of violence applied to the platform to receive
support. Lina Farah Cheboub was also subjected to a smear campaign and
online blackmail and she began legal action against the perpetrators. <A
group of people shared fake photos of me and accused me of prostitution
because I exposed many harassers and abusers online.> >>

districts of Amed (Diyarbakır) about their election campaigns.
'We will promote the system of co-presidency'
<We will keep struggling to achieve freedom in all facets of life
against capitalist modernity,> said Safiye Akdag, DEM Party's co-mayoral
candidate for Yenişehir. <As women, we will promote the system of
co-presidency to participate in all decision-making progresses.>
'Municipalities that belong to the people will be given back to the
people'
Speaking about her election campaign, she said, <We have been visiting
villages and artisans for days to listen to their demands. As women
co-mayoral candidates, we focus on our projects that we will put into
practice after the elections. When we will be elected, we will carry out
cultural and social activities for women. We will provide services to
our people to meet their demands. Municipalities that belong to the
people will be given back to the people again.>
'The earthquakes displaced many people in Baglar'
After 2014 and 2019 local elections, the Turkish government removed
elected Kurdish mayors from office and appointed trustees. In her
speech, Leyla Ayaz, DEM Party's co-mayoral candidate for Bağlar,
recalled that the municipalities in Kurdish cities have been run by
unelected mayors for years. <We will work day and night to put an end to
this usurpation.> Pointing out that Rezan (Baglar) district is one of
the important districts of Amed, Leyla Ayaz said: <It is one of the
districts that have a high voter turnout. The February 6 earthquakes
displaced many people in the district. In addition to displacement, it
is one of the districts where violence against women is on rise. Before
the appointment of trustees, many activities were carried out for women
and children in the district. Women and children had centers to become
socialized. All these centers were closed down by the appointed
municipalities.>
'We will organize our election campaigns with women'
Leyla Ayaz told us that she would pursue policies against poverty and
drug use if she won the election. <We will carry out activities
especially for women in the district. The first thing that we will do is
to reopen the women's centers. We will open centers to fight drug use.
We will expose all the corruption and start a social construction.> >>
