<<European Parliament Resolution Condemns Poisoning of Iranian
Schoolgirls and Calls for Accountability
European Parliament Resolution expresses solidarity with Iranian women
and girls leading the protests. The European Parliament adopted a
resolution this afternoon, Thursday, March 16, 2023, denouncing the
atrocious attempt to silence women and girls in Iran in the strongest
terms. The European Parliament resolution also expressed deep solidarity
with the poisoned students and their families. The European Parliament
resolution was adopted by 516 votes in favour, 5 against and 14
abstentions. The European Parliament resolution reaffirmed its absolute
support for Iranian women's and girls' demand to abolish all systemic
discrimination, urged the UN Human Rights Council to task the
Independent International Fact-Finding Mission (IIFFM) with an
independent investigation into the schoolgirl poisonings, and called for
those responsible to be held to account.

Tag: The girl child
<<The girl child in Iran is the most innocent victim of the mullahs
Being a woman and a child, makes the girl child in Iran the most
vulnerable under the misogynist rule of the mullahs since the rights of
women and children are neither protected nor promoted in Iran.
The bill on the rights of children has been stalled in the parliament
for years, just as the bill on violence against women was stalled for
eight years, before being totally overhauled. The bill to increase the
age of marriage for the girl child in Iran was rejected in December 2018
by the Legal and Judicial Committee of the parliament for containing <religious and social deficiencies> and for contradicting <the teachings
of Islam.> The Iranian Constitution sets 9 the legal age of criminal
accountability for the girl child in Iran and the man-datory dress code
forces her to cover her hair since the first day of school at age 6. At
least a quarter of Iranian students are forced to quit school every
year, a large number of whom join the estimated 3 to 7 million child
laborers. Drop-out of girl children, 6 years and older, is widespread
particularly in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, Khuzestan,
Western Azerbaijan, and Eastern Azerbaijan. The girl child in Iran is
also victim of substandard structures of schools and unsafe
transportation in light of the irres-ponsible approach of education
officials and staff. Every year, a number of young girls lose their
lives while on the road to school, under a collapsed wall or ceiling, or
in fire. Unsafe heating systems have also caused repeated poisoning of
students. Institutionalized in the clerical regime's laws, the legal age
of marriage for the girl child in Iran is 13 years, and she can be given
to marriage even younger if the father and a judge decide that she is
mature enough. Therefore, the rate of forced marriage of the girl child
in Iran is rapidly growing.>>

<<Stink Bombs, Hysteria: Iranian Police's Explanations For Schoolgirl
Poisonings
Iranian authorities claim to have made progress in identifying and
arresting suspects related to a wave of sicknesses that have affec-ted
thousands of students across the country. Police spokesman Saeed
Montazer Al-Mahdi announced on March 15 the arrest of 110 suspects and
the confiscation of thousands of <stink bombs,> sug-gesting that at
least some of the attacks on schools might have been copycat pranks.
Montazer Al-Mahdi also claimed that <the majority> of the poisonings
were <not real> and were caused by psychological factors that triggered
<fear and mental contagion> among students. No previous reports have
linked the use of stink bombs, which are sold across the world, to
poisonings.>>

<<More Iranian Girls' Schools Targeted By <Chemical Attacks>
Schoolgirls in at least two western Iranian cities were reportedly taken
to medical centers for treatment on March 13, amid a wave of poisonings
that have affected thousands of pupils across the country over more than
three months. The Telegram channel of the group Bazaar Civil Protests
released a video purportedly showing anxious residents of Kurdistan
province's city of Baneh next to an ambulance parked outside Vahdat
secondary school. The group said an unknown number of schoolgirls were
poisoned and taken to medical centers after a <chemical attack.>
According to the same group, two girls' schools in the city of Mahshahr,
in Khuzestan province, were also sickened by chemical exposure. The
poisonings started in late November 2022, causing anxiety among parents
and students.
Some Iranians have suggested that the poisonings could be an attempt to
force the closure of girls' schools or a retaliation for students and
women leading anti-government demonstrations that have swept Iran since
September. While Iranian political figures and activists have described
the wave of poisonings as <chemical> and <biological> attacks, officials
have only recently admitted there may be a problem. Deputy Health
Minister Saeed Karimi said that 13,000 students were treated as of March
12 for symptoms including nausea, headaches, coughing, breathing
difficulties and heart palpitations. Karimi said 100 of them had not
been discharged from medical centers. He also said that the poisonings
have caused no death. Meanwhile, the police commander of Hormozgan
province, Gholamreza Jafari, announced on March 13 the arrest of a
person accused of <spreading lies > about the poisoning. In an apparent
attempt to control the narrative surrounding the poisonings, the
authorities have arrested a journalist and a blogger, and launched
judicial proceedings against several other individuals and newspapers.>>
