Şehinaz Omar and Zekiye Mihemed
Jinha - Womens News Agency - June 25 , 2024 - by HESNA MIHEMED
<<'Action should be taken against policies aiming at demographic change'
Şehinaz Omar and Zekiye Mihemed, two displaced women of Afrin living in
the Berxwedan camp in Shahba, call on human rights organizations to take
action against Turkish policies aiming at changing the demographic
structure in Afrin.
Shahba- The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have been carrying
out policies aiming at changing the demographic structure of Afrin since
they began to occupy Afrin Canton on March 18, 2018. They have settled
families and members of factions, who are not from Afrin. The Turkish
state has built more than 42 buildings in Afrin with the support of 48
associations from Kuwait, Qatar and Palestine since March 2018,
according to a report of the Afrin-Syria Human Rights Organization.
'They changed the names of villages and streets'
In an interview with NuJINHA, Şehinaz Omar and Zekiye Mihemed, two
displaced women of Afrin living in the Berxwedan camp in Shahba, reacted
to the occupation policies of the Turkish state. <The occupying Turkish
state has carried out policies aiming at killing civilians and changing
the demographic structure in Afrin,> said Şehinaz Omar. <The names of
Afrin's historical villages and streets are being changed and replaced
with Turkish names. Nature and the mountains of Afrin are burned and
destroyed.>
'People are forced to learn Turkish'
Afrin was known for its nature but it has now been turned into a desert,
Şehinaz Omar emphasized, adding, <It is obvious that the Turkish state
has been carrying out a policy to destroy the history of Afrin. Afrin is
a part of Syria; however, the Kurds and Syrians are forced to learn
Turkish because the Turkish state wants to erase their identity. I call
on all international organizations to unite and fulfill their
responsibilities against this situation.> Zekiye Mihemed also thinks
that the Turkish state aims to destroy the identity and existence of
people from different nations in Afrin. <Since Shahba is a small area,
we live in the camp. This camp was built for the displaced people of
Afrin until they return to their homeland. The Turkish state has built
buildings and camps in Afrin and settled foreign families there in order
to increase the Arab and Turkish population. It aims to change the
demographic structure in Afrin.> Women in Afrin are forced to wear black
and long clothes to destroy their culture, Zekiye Mihemed said.
<Century-old fruit trees in Afrin are also cut down and burned by
Erdogan and his factions.> >>

<<Displaced women in Sudan living under inhumane conditions
Internally displaced women in Sudan struggle to survive from the shadow
of the ongoing war in Sudan and inhumane conditions in shelters.
Sudan- Hundreds of internally displaced women, who fled their homes to
save their children and provide a better life for them, struggle to
survive in shelters in Sudan. More than 10 million people in Sudan have
fled their homes as war that erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)
and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan on April 15, 2023 continues
and 80 per cent of those internally displaced are women and girls,
according to the international reports.
She got kicked out for complaining
A.M., one of the internally displaced women living in shelters, got
kicked out of a shelter for complaining about the inhumane conditions.
<I have no place to stay now because the officers kicked me and my five
children out of the shelter.>
The situations of pregnant women is especially worse
Namariq Numeiri, a displaced women from Port Sudan, talked about her
difficult journey from Khartoum. <Since there was no transportation, I
had to walk thousands of kilometers with my children. Then, we reached
Al Jazeera province. We were displaced from there a few days later,>
said Namariq Numeiri, stressing the suffering of women, especially
pregnant women in IDP shelters. <Pregnant women suffer from the lack of
medical support. They need money for examinations, the birth process,
care of newborn babies and nutrition. However, the authorities do not
allow male family members to work and deport them. There is no privacy
in shelters and children are in need of special care.>
'People are turned into beggars'
The government does not fulfill its responsibility for the displaced
people in the states under the control of the Sudanese-Armed Forces,
especially in the north of Sudan and the Nile River, said Amira Osman, a
human rights defender in Sudan and leader of the No to Oppression
against Women Initiative. <Displaced people are treated as if they had
arbitrarily left their homes. The government acts as if it is not
responsible for displacement. People living in shelters are left alone.
Due to economic collapse in the country, people have lost their jobs and
business. They are turned into beggars.>
Call on authorities
Amira Osman drew attention to the living conditions and suffering of
women living in IDP shelters. <The shelters are overcrowded and women
living in the shelters suffer from the lack of basic services; they have
no access to clean water, food and privacy. The shelters do not have
health facilities providing services to displaced people. I call on the
authorities and the government to provide safe shelters so that
displaced people can have a safe life.> >>

<<Over-the-counter pain medications increase addiction rate in Idlib
In Idlib, the pain medications lead to addiction among people,
especially those injured in the war. Such medications are sold illegally
without a prescription by many pharmacies.
Idlib- People living in Idlib, occupied by the Turkish state and its
armed faction Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have been affected by the
ongoing Syrian war. Those injured in the ongoing war suffer from
psychological problems and physical pain and they get addicted to pain
medications prescribed by doctors and to over-the-counter medications
sold by pharmacies. The instability and insecurity make it easier to use
and sell such medications.
29-year-old Hanadi Al-Yassin got addicted to pain medications after
being injured in a clash. <After I was injured and lost one of my legs,
I got addicted to pain medications,> she said. <I first used pain
medications to relieve the severity of the pain in my leg. Over time, I
needed higher doses. I cannot live without them now. I tried to stop
using them many times; however, I could not.>
She received addition treatment
32-year-old Zainab Haj Taha, a displaced woman from the city of Maarat
al-Numan living in the Harbanoush IDP camp in Idlib, is a drug addict.
<I was a student of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Aleppo.
I was arrested by the Damascus government when I was in my last year of
university. I was released from prison after nine months thanks to the
efforts of my family,> said Zainab Haj Taha, who had to drop out of
school for fear of being arrested again. <I had nothing but drugs. I
isolated myself and I realized my bad situation very late. I received
addiction treatment to get rid of drugs.>
'It was the hardest time of my life'
25-year-old Rana Gulsum also got addicted to pain medications after
being injured in a clash. <I lost one of my hands and eyes. I was in
pain and my doctor prescribed a painkiller. At the beginning, I took
only two painkillers every day but then I started taking eight
painkillers every day. I became addicted to painkillers. With the
support of my relatives, I received an addiction treatment at a center
in Idlib for five months. It was the hardest time of my life but I
overcame my addiction.>
In an interview with NuJINHA, Hanan Al-Sayadi, a doctor in Idlib, spoke
about the over-the-counter pain medications and how they lead to
addiction. <Syrian law prohibits pharmacists from selling these
medications to patients. However, they sell these medications to make
money,> she said, stressing the threat posed by pain medications.
<Addiction is an inability to stop using a substance or engaging in a
behavior even though it may cause psychological or physical harm. It
affects individuals and society, and can lead to death when taken in
high doses. Awareness-raising activities should be carried out about the
threat posed by pain medications.> >>
