<<Arrested for a Dot, Iranian Author Accused of Disrespecting the Leader
Hossein Shanbehzadeh, a prominent social media activist, editor, and
translator, was arrested in Iran's Ardabil on Tuesday.Hossein confirmed
his arrest during a brief phone call with his family. His brother, Abbas
Shanbehzadeh, had previously expressed concerns on social media about
failed attempts to contact Hossein and his unknown whereabouts. The
arrest came shortly after Hossein's account on social media platform X,
previously Twitter, was disabled. Abbas noted, <He clearly did not
publish the last tweet,> suggesting potential interference with his
brother's account.
Authorities have not officially disclosed the reason for Hossein's
arrest, but many point to a recent interaction on X as the catalyst
behind it. The incident involves Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's
account posting his photo with the national student volleyball team.
Shanbezadeh replied to Khamenei's tweet with a single character: a
period. This minimalist critique quickly went viral, with thousands of
users reposting the exchange.
Many saw his punctuation as a bold statement, suggesting that even the
slightest criticism as <a mere dot> could rattle the government. As news
of Hossein's arrest spread, supporters flooded social media platforms,
using the term <kidnapping> to describe his detention.>>

Qezel Hesar Prison
NCRI - Womens committee - 4 June 2024 - in Women's News
<<Qezel Hesar Prison: Egregious Assault on Political Prisoner’s Wife
The 13th week of hunger strike by prisoners in Qezel Hesar and elsewhere
In a shocking incident at Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, female guards
humiliated and assaulted the wife of a political prisoner under the
guise of a body search. This incident highlights the ongoing abuse and
mistreatment of political prisoners and their families within the
facility. The brutality of this incident was so severe that the victim
experienced bleeding and psychological trauma. The guards involved,
identified as Fatemeh Sadat Rasoul and Zahra Sadat Rasoul, are relatives
of the prison's head of security, Sadat Rasoul. This assault sparked
outrage among the inmates. Reports from within the prison indicate that
in response, guards led by Sadat Rasoul prepared to attack inmates in
Unit 1, Hall 7. In the meantime, prisoners in Qezel Hesar and other
prisons, including the women's ward of Evin, held their hunger strike
today, Tuesday, June 4, 2024, for the 13th consecutive week in protest
of the spree of executions taking place in this prison and others across
the country.
Who is Sadat Rasoul?
Sadat Rasoul has been the head of security at Qezel Hesar Prison for
over nine years, using his position to inflict both physical and
psychological torture on prisoners and their families. Alongside Fatemeh
and Zahra, another relative, Asadollah Sadat Rasoul, is involved in
harassing prisoners' families during visits. Sadat Rasoul is also
implicated in orchestrating the smuggling of drugs into the prison.
Reports suggest that over 90% of the drugs consumed in the prison are
brought in by his network.
Prisoners leak video on weekly executions in Qezel Hesar
On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, inmates from Unit 1, Hall 7 released a video
revealing that 10 to 20 prisoners are executed weekly in Qezel Hesar
Prison. They voiced their opposition to the oppressive measures enforced
by the prison’s security, highlighting the severe conditions they
endure. On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, guards were once again preparing to
assault inmates in Unit 1, Hall 7. Inmates continue to report that
guards, under the direction of Sadat Rasoul, are equipped with clubs and
weapons, positioning themselves on the prison roof in anticipation of an
attack.
All forms of communication and recreation for inmates in Unit 1 have
been suspended.
Need for investigation of abuses in Qezel Hesar
The ongoing abuses in Qezel Hesar Prison, particularly under the
direction of Sadat Rasoul, represent severe human rights violations. The
mistreatment of political prisoners and their families, coupled with the
alleged drug trafficking facilitated by prison officials, demands
immediate attention and intervention from human rights organizations and
international bodies.>>

<<Iran Detains Baha'i Citizen for Over 3 Weeks Without Explanation
A Baha'i citizen living in Iran's northwestern Bukan has been detained
for over three weeks without any official explanation or charges being
presented. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency HRANA,
Agah Sadeghi was arrested by security forces in Bukan three weeks ago.
Despite repeated attempts to inquire about his whereabouts and
condition, the family received no information from authorities.
Following the arrest, security agents also raided Sadeghi's home,
conducting a search and confiscating their personal belongings. The
Baha'i faith is not recognized by the Iranian government, and its
followers have faced systematic discrimination for decades. For more
than four decades, Baha'is have been systematically persecuted in Iran
because of their faith and are often accused of being spies or opposed
to the Iranian government. The Baha'i International Community states
that no evidence has ever been provided to substantiate these charges.
The Iranian government has intensified its crackdown on members of the
Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on spurious charges over the
past year, denying them access to higher education and livelihoods, and
confiscating or destroying their personal properties.>>

<<Tehran University Head's Run for Presidency Sparks Backlash
Mohammad Moghimi, the President of Tehran University and known for
violating students' rights, registered as a presidential candidate on
Monday.
His bid comes amid widespread reports of ongoing repression against
students across Iranian universities, including Tehran University, with
many barred from campuses over hijab rules. Moghimi's name gained
prominence, especially after the Woman, Life, Freedom protests and the
suppression of professors and students supporting the movement at Tehran
University.
The announcement of Moghimi's candidacy led to significant reactions on
social media.
<Mohammad Moghimi is known at Tehran University for plagiarized
articles,> a former student of Tehran University told IranWire. <He
awarded an honorary doctorate to Bashar al-Assad and stated that the
development and progress of Syria is the development and progress of
Iran. Although it is unlikely that he will pass electoral monitoring, it
is unfortunate that someone with such a black history of suppressing
students is allowed to participate in the show elections in the
country,> the student said.
In other Iranian universities, the suppression of students continues
even as the June 28 snap election approaches.
In the past, the Islamic Republic has tried to create minimal openings
in society to encourage participation, especially from the young and
educated generation. However, after significant opposition from the
students of the University of Arts and others, the government seems less
inclined to do so this time. The Telegram channel of United Students
reported that in recent weeks, security officers have been preventing
female students from entering colleges under the pretext of not
observing the hijab rules. There have also been reports of female
dormitory students being banned from leaving their accommodations for
not wearing a headscarf. Documents published by student sources reveal
that several members of the security forces, whose names are mentioned,
have been recording and reporting the movement of female students in
full detail.>>

<<Iranian Prisoners' Anti-Death Penalty Campaign Expands
For the past 19 weeks, prisoners across various Iranian prisons have
been actively participating in a civil campaign against the death
penalty. In the campaign's 19th week, eight political and religious
prisoners from Ward 3 of Ghezelhesar Prison joined their ranks. A letter
received by IranWire from the campaign members outlines the reasons
behind this movement.
The campaign was launched in response to a surge in executions.
In February, a group of ordinary prisoners from Ghezelhesar highlighted
their dire conditions and called for support from all prisoners
nationwide.
Political prisoners quickly recognized the execution of ordinary
prisoners as a precursor to their own, intended to suppress and
intimidate society while diverting attention from political executions.
This solidarity led to widespread support from political prisoners in
Ghezelhesar and beyond. The campaign members referenced a recent video
showing the harsh realities faced by ordinary prisoners in Ward 1 of
Ghezelhesar, which reported numerous executions. In the 19th week of the
<No to Execution Tuesdays> campaign, eight Sunni ideological and
political prisoners from Unit Ward of Ghezelhesar joined the campaign by
sending a supportive message. Prisoners in Ghezelhesar, Evin, Central
Karaj, Khorramabad, Khoy, and Naqdeh prisons have been on a hunger
strike for 19 weeks each Tuesday.
The striking prisoners demand attention to their plight and support from
the broader community.
According to a report by Amnesty International, Iran has reached its
highest level of death sentence execution in the last eight years, with
the judiciary of the Islamic Republic executing 853 people in 2023
alone. The report indicates that 481 executions, more than half of the
total, were related to drug crimes. This marks an 89 percent increase in
the death penalty compared to 2022, when 255 people were executed for
drug-related offenses. The latest numbers also show a 264 percent
increase compared to 2021, when 132 individuals faced execution for
similar charges.>>

<<Hardliner Female MP Registers for Iran's Presidential Race
Zohreh Elahian, a radical member of the Iranian Parliament, has
registered to run in the upcoming presidential election. Her
registration comes in the wake of the death of Ebrahim Raisi, Iran's
former president, who died in a helicopter crash last month.
The snap elections are scheduled to take place on June 28.
A supporter of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, she could potentially become
the first woman ever allowed to stand for president if approved by the
Guardian Council, which vets all potential candidates. A known
hardliner, she was sanctioned by Canada in March for endorsing the death
penalty for protesters involved in the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. By
law, women cannot run for president in the Islamic Republic. However,
her candidacy depends on the interpretation of the Arabic term for <a

Fardis Prison
NCRI - Womens committee - 3 June 2024 - in Women's News
<<Fardis Prison in Karaj: Intensifying Pressure on Female Political
Prisoners
The situation at Fardis prison in Karaj has taken a concerning turn,
particularly for female political prisoners. Authorities have recently
transferred non-political inmates to the ward designated for female
political prisoners. Unfortunately, this move has exacerbated existing
problems, leaving these women in dire conditions.
Challenges Faced by Female Political Prisoners
Overcrowding and Lack of Resting Places: The influx of non-political
prisoners has strained the available space, leaving female political
detainees with inadequate resting areas. The lack of proper facilities
affects their physical and mental well-being.
Hygiene and Sanitation Issues: The prison's hygiene materials are
insufficient, and lice infestations are rampant. Female prisoners
struggle to maintain basic cleanliness due to overcrowding and limited
resources.
Medical Neglect: Mothers with children, who are among the transferred
prisoners, face additional hardships. The prison clinic fails to provide
adequate medical care, offering only painkillers to sick women. The
overall health of these children suffers due to the harsh conditions.
About Fardis Prison in Karaj
Located in Alborz province, Hossein Abad Fardis, Fardis prison (also
known as Kachouii prison or Fardis penitentiary) primarily houses
financial offenders. The prison comprises four wards, each accommodating
approximately 150 to 200 inmates, totaling nearly 1000 prisoners.
Hygiene materials are scarce, and families can only bring clothes for
their incarcerated relatives every three months. Prison guards do not
accept other items from outside.
Drug Availability and Medical Care
Narcotics, methadone, and B2 are administered under the supervision of
the prison doctor. Shockingly, drugs like crystal meth and heroin are
more accessible inside the prison than outside. Sick women visiting the
prison clinic receive minimal medical attention, emphasizing the neglect
they face.
Torture and Inhumane Conditions
Inadequate food, hunger, lack of safe drinking water, absence of hot
water for bathing, and insufficient heating equipment contribute to the
torture endured by prisoners.
Mothers who bring their children to prison suffer greatly. The mental
and physical health of these innocent children becomes collateral damage
in the face of prison authorities' cruelty.
The situation at Fardis prison in Karaj demands urgent attention and
intervention to alleviate the suffering of female prisoners and their
children.>>

<<Kurdish Religious Prisoner Kamran Shekha Transferred to Mahabad Prison
Amid Imminent Execution Threat
Kamran Shekha, a Kurdish religious prisoner sentenced to death, has been
transferred from Ghezelhesar Prison in Karaj to Mahabad Central Prison.
He faces imminent execution, following the execution of six of his
co-defendants. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization
for Human Rights, on Saturday, June 1, 2024, Kamran Shekha was
transferred from Ghezelhesar Prison to Mahabad Central Prison for
undisclosed reasons and without prior notice. The sudden and unannounced
transfer has raised serious concerns about the execution of his death
sentence and his overall fate. On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Kamran Shekha
was placed in solitary confinement in preparation for his execution but
was subsequently returned to the general prison. Shekha's transfer to
Mahabad Central Prison follows the execution of his co-defendant, Khsraw
Basharat, in Ghezelhesar Prison on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, during his
15th year of imprisonment. It should also be noted that on Wednesday,
May 1, 2024, the death sentence of Anwar Khezri, another defendant in
the same case, was carried out in Ghezelhesar Prison without public
notification. Previously, the death sentences of four other defendants
in the same case-Davud Abdullahi, Farhad Salimi, Ayoub Karimi, and Qasim
Abesteh-were executed in Ghezelhesar Prison.
