<<More than 20,000 Iranian Girls under 15 Got Married over Nine-Months
More than 20,000 girls under the age of 15 got married in Iran during
the nine-month period ending in January, according to official data.
The Iranian Statistics Center said in a report released on April 7 that
as many as 1,085 underage girls became mothers, while 551 cases of
divorce were recorded. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in
Iran, Javaid Rehman, has cited the prevalence of child marriage in Iran
as a major issue. <It is unacceptable that Iranian law sets the marriage
age for girls as low as 13, and allows girls even younger to marry with
paternal and judicial consent,> he told the Human Rights Council in
2021. Some women's rights activists have proposed lowering the minimum
age of marriage to 16 for girls and to 18 for boys, but the proposal was
rejected by the Guardian Council.
According to human rights groups, child marriage is a violation of human
rights that robs girls and boys of childhood. It often results in early
pregnancy, poor health, little education and social isolation, which
make it impossible to break the vicious circle of poverty, particularly
for girls.>>

<<Sunni Cleric Says <Religiousism> Led Iran to a <Dead End>
Iran's top Sunni cleric suggested that exaggerated and affected piety
and religious zeal has led the country to an impasse, as hundreds of
demonstrations returned to the streets of the restive city of Zahedan
for weekly protests against the Islamic Republic. <Religiousism has led
the country to a dead end,> Molavi, the Sunni Friday prayer leader of
the south-eastern city of Zahedan, said on April 7. The 76-year-old
outspoken cleric urged Iran's Shia leadership to end its brutal
crack-down on anti-government protesters and release all political
prisoners, saying that Iranians should not be punished for exercising
their right to hold street protests. Molavi called on the government to
<listen to the voice of the people and to work together with them,
regardless of their background or beliefs.> He also expressed concern
over the govern-ment's mistreatment of women and girls who do not abide
to manda-tory hijab rules, saying violence <is ineffective and only
causes more harm.> Molavi has been a key dissenting voice inside Iran
since the eruption of nationwide protests in September 2022 demanding
fundamental economic, social and political changes. Zahedan is the
capital of Sistan and Baluchistan, home to Iran's Sunni Baluch minority
of up to 2 million people. Activists reported a large presence of
security forces in Zahedan as hundreds of demonstrators took to the
streets after prayers on April 7 for a silent march out of respect for
the month of Ramadan. Internet monitor NetBlocks reported a <significant
disruption> to connectivity in the city, saying the incident <continues
the weekly pattern of regional internet shutdowns targeting
anti-government protests during Friday prayers.>

<<Two Detained Iranian Protesters Raped in Car, Group Says
Iranian security forces have raped two young male protesters after
detaining them during recent protests in the north-western city of
Tabriz, according to a local human rights group. Three plainclothes
agents shoved the protesters in a car and used a stun gun against them
before removing their trousers and raping them, the Committee for
Follow-up on the Status of Detainees quoted an unidentified source as
saying. The committee did not give the identity of the victims or when
the incident took place. The source said he reported the incident to a
judge, who accused him of acting against national security and of
participating in protests. The judge also threatened to <rape> him, the
group said. There have been numerous reports of sexual assault, torture
and other ill-treatment inflicted to detained protesters, amid a fierce
crackdown by the authorities on more than seven months of nationwide
anti-government demonstrations.>>

<<Iranian poet: The weapon of poets and writers is their pen
Mahabad - NuJINHA spoke to Iranian poet and writer Rojin Habibi (we do
not use her real name for her safety) about the difficulties and
challenges faced by women in the fields of art. 60-year-old Rojin Habibi
is a married woman living in the city of Mahabad. Her poems are well
known in Eastern Kurdistan and she has published several books in
Kurdish. She has been working as a teacher for 30 years.
Indicating that she has spent her life by writing poems, articles,
teaching and telling stories for children, Rojin Habibi told us the
challenges she has faced. <Since my childhood, I have been struggling
for my rights. My father did not allow me and my sisters to go to school
but my mother sent us to school secretly. My father did not realize that
we went to school until I was in fifth grade. One day, my father saw me
reading a book. He went out and did not prevent us from going to
school.>
'My teacher told me that women do not have a talent for writing poetry'
Rojin Habibi wrote many poems and one day decided to show her poems to
her teacher. <When my teacher saw the poems, he told everyone in the
classroom that women do not have a talent for writing poetry. He said
women should get married and stay at home. It was the first time I
showed my poems to someone and the reaction of my teacher was so harsh
that I could write poems for a while. Now, one of my children is
interested in writing poetry. I support her to improve herself.>
'Women face many challenges in art'
Despite gender discrimination and social and cultural pressures, the
women of East Kurdistan keep struggling against the patriarchal society
to pave the way for next generations. They struggle for freedom and to
enter the fields reserved for men. <The patriarchal mentality constantly
underestimates women and says women are weaker than men. In Iran and
Rojhilat Kurdistan, women are not allowed to sit in public spaces. When
a female poet writes a poem about men, she is told that she has no right
to talk about her feelings. For this reason, women who are interested in
literature often write in a secret way. Women have no right to join
literary societies and receive education. Women have to pay more to
publishers so that they publish their books.> In the beginning, Rojin
Habibi confronted her parents, her brothers, her husband, and then the
entire community. <I was the first woman to act in a film named 'In My
City' in order to break the gender stereotyping norms imposed on women
and girls in our society. I never allowed challenges and difficulties to
stop me. I taught many women how to read and write. I formed a women's
group and we have provided opportunities for women writers to publish
their work, and I have provided financial support to them so that women
can have a space in literature. The weapon of poets and writers is their
pen. We fight with our pen and we write our pains and desires for
everyone to read.>
'The Jina Mahsa Amini uprising has a great influence on art'
Commenting about the protests that started in Iran and Rojhilat
following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini, Rojin Habibi said, <The Jina
Mahsa Amini uprising has a great influence on all fields, especially on
the field of art. Women writers and poets have played an important role
in changing their society. The uprising has changed many gender
stereotypes in art and literature. This uprising is a blow to the
patriarchal society in Iran.> >>
