<<Three Iranians Face Death Penalty over Paramilitary Member's Killing
Iran's judiciary has charged three people with <waging war against God,>
a charge that could carry the death penalty, over the alleged killing of
a member of the Basij paramilitary force during protests last year.
<Three of the defendants in this case have been charged with waging war
against God by using cold weapons and acting against the national
security of the country, while the other [six] defendants have been
charged with collusion and gathering against the country's security,>
judiciary spokesperson Masoud Setayshi said on April 26.
The defendants include Milad Armon, Mehdi Hosseini, Mehdi Imani, Alireza
Kefaei, Hossein Nemati, Mehdi Jahani, Behrad Hessari, Nestouh Nikkhah,
and Mohammad Pasandian.
Authorities say Basij member Arman Alivardi was killed on November 5,
2022 during protests in Ekbatan Town, west of Tehran. The commander of
Tehran's Revolutionary Guards announced the arrest of the nine
defendants on November 7. All of them were later acquitted and released,
except Armon. It is not immediately clear which suspects are currently
behind bars. The Volunteer Committee to Follow-Up on the Situation of
Detainees previously reported that all the suspects in the case were
subjected to severe torture and forced confessions while in detention.>>

Opinon by Gino d'Artali: 'Outrageous' because the story goes way into
the mid-nineties and proves how corrupt the Iranian top was back then
and now the regime keeps dragging innocent people to court for 'sham
trials' accusing them of <corruption of the earth>. As one says in the
West: 'The apple does not fall far from the tree'.

<<Three Iranian Journalists Given Five Days to Present Defense in Court
Prosecutors in Tehran's Evin prison summoned three women journalists on
April 26 and gave them five days to present their last defense in court,
according to media reports, amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent and the
media. The charges against Saeedeh Shafiei, Mehrnoosh Zarei and Nasim
Sultan Beygi include <propaganda against> the regime. The three
journalists were arrested last year during nationwide protests sparked
by the September 2022 death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in police
custody. They were later released on bail. According to the
New-York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, Iranian authorities
have arrested at least 95 other journalists since the eruption of the
anti-government protests.
Also on April 26, the judiciary announced charges against two women
journalists who have been incarcerated for seven months for covering the
events surrounding Amini's. Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi are
accused of <collaborating with the hostile American government,
colluding against national security and engaging in propaganda activity>
against the regime - accusations that could carry the death penalty.>>

<<Iran's Handwoven Carpet Industry
Iran enjoys a universal reputation in carpet weaving. Persian carpet or
Iranian rug is one of the main features of Iranian culture and art as
well as one of the country's leading exports. Woven in various types by
nomads and workshops, Persian handmade carpets are well-known for their
longevity, lavish textures, strong colors and elaborate patterns. They
are characterized by natural dyes, traditional tribal patterns, as well
as modern designs, but old techniques. But Persian carpets are gathering
dust as exports have declined over the years owing to US sanctions and
growing global competition. Exports peaked at $2 billion in 1994 but the
country exported carpets worth $50 million in the financial year ending
in March 2022.>>

<<Iranian Authorities Announce Charges against Journalists Hamedi,
Mohammadi
The Iranian judiciary has announced charges against two women
journalists who have been incarcerated for seven months for covering the
events surrounding Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. Judiciary
spokesman Masoud Setayshi said on April 26 that Niloofar Hamedi and
Elahe Mohammadi are accused of <collaborating with the hostile American
government, colluding against national security and engaging in
propaganda activity> against the regime. The accusations could carry the
death penalty. The indictment was given to the defendants and their
lawyers on April 17 as well as to Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolution
Court, Setayshi said, adding that the court hearings are expected to
start within a month. Hamedi, a reporter for the Tehran-based Shargh
Daily, and Mohammadi of the daily newspaper Hammihan were arrested in
September after Amini's death sparked months of widespread protests
against the country's clerical establishment. After their arrest, the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Intelligence
published a joint statement accusing the journalists of publishing the
first photograph of Amini in her hospital bed and of <fabricating news>
about her funeral and the initial protests in her hometown of Saqqez.
According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists,
Iranian authorities have arrested at least 95 other journalists since
the eruption of the anti-government protests.>>

<<Filmmaker Panahi Allowed To Leaves Iran After 14 Years, Wife Says
The wife of acclaimed Iranian director Jafar Panahi says his travel ban
has been lifted after 14 years and that she and her husband were going
to travel abroad <for a few days.> Tahereh Saeedi made the announcements
in an Instagram post late on April 25. Accompanying the post was a
picture of the couple arriving at an unidentified airport. It was not
immediately clear when the photo was taken. Panahi, 62, is one of Iran's
best-known filmmakers. The Cannes film festival award-winner and
director of <Taxi> and <No Bears> was arrested in July 2022, before the
eruption of ongoing widespread protests against Iran's clerical
establishment, after he protested the detention of two other filmmakers.
He was temporarily released from prison in February this year after
going on a hunger strike to protest the <illegal and inhumane behavior>
of the Islamic Republic's judiciary.>>
