<<Iran's security forces attack women football fans
News Center- Iran's security forces attacked women gathering in front of
the Azadi Stadium in Tehran to watch a football match between Esteghlal
F.C. and Persepolis F.C. on Sunday, April 23. The women were forced to
leave the area due to the intervention of the security forces. The
Iranian football authorities promised the International Football
Federation (FIFA) that they would allow women to watch football matches.
Although women had been able to buy tickets for the match between
Esteghlal F.C. and Persepolis F.C., they were attacked and forced to

A political prisoner's urgent plea to the international communit. On
Saturday, April 22, 2023, Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee, a political prisoner
in the women's ward of Evin prison, issued a message to the world

refrain from supporting the perpetrators of violence against the Iranian
people. It is worth noting that on April 13, 2023, Golrokh Ebrahimi
Iraee received a six-year prison sentence for the charge of <assembly
and collusion> and an additional one-year sentence for <propaganda
against the state.> These charges were handed down by Tehran’s 26th

<<Bipartisan US Congressional Caucus Formed to Support Iranian Women's
Fight for Freedom and Democracy
House Resolution, Amnesty International censure the Iranian regime's
inaction in addressing the poisoning of Iranian schoolgirls
A bipartisan congressional caucus of nearly 20 lawmakers was announced
by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) on Thursday, April 20. The
congressional caucus, called the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus,
will serve as a forum for members of the US Congress to discuss issues
and developments related to women's freedom and democracy in Iran. The
first move by the committee was a joint resolution condemning the
chemical attack on Iranian school girls. The resolution is the latest
move by Congress to condemn the current Iranian regime and support the
thousands of women and girls protesting for a secular, democratic, and
nuclear-free Iran. The resolution, H. RES. 310, condemns the inaction by
the Islamic Republic of Iran in addressing the poisoning of Iranian
schoolgirls, the Daughters of the Iranian Revolution. The resolution
highlights the recent poison gas attacks on schoolgirls in Iran and the
Iranian regime's violent suppression of schoolgirls, men, and women
participating in demonstrations. It calls for transparent accountability
for all killings of protesters by Iranian security forces. It urges the
United States government to initiate a formal process for an independent
investigation of the gas attacks on schoolgirls in Iran. Additionally,
the resolution calls on the US to work with the United Nations to send
an independent fact-finding mission to Iran and with the World Health
Organization to provide a transparent report to Congress based on an
independent investigation of how these attacks are taking place and who
is behind these attacks on schoolgirls in Iran.
....
The Iranian Women Congressional Caucus aims to highlight the bravery and
resilience of Iranian women in their fight for equality and human
rights. The co-chairs of the caucus are Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and
Nancy Mace (R-SC). The new committee is expected to work towards
supporting the Iranian people's desire for a democratic, secular, and
non-nuclear free Republic of Iran and condemning violations of human
rights and state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian regime.
Millions of schoolgirls at risk of Poisoning - Amnesty International
Meanwhile, Amnesty International issued an urgent action on April 18.
The urgent action states, <The rights to education, health and life of
millions of schoolgirls are at risk amid ongoing chemical gas attacks
deliberately targeting girls’ schools in Iran. Since November 2022,
thousands of schoolgirls have been poisoned and hospitalized. The
authorities have failed to investigate and end the attacks adequately
and dismissed girls' symptoms as <stress>, <excitement,> and/or <mental
contagion.> >>

<<US Senate Hosts Exhibition Honoring Women and Girls Who Lost Their
Lives in the Iran Uprising
On April 12, 2023, the US Senate hosted a photo exhibition in honor of
the martyrs of the Iranian people's uprising. The exhibition featured
photographs of women and girls who lost their lives during the
democratic revolution in Iran and was attended by advisors to senators
and staff from various professional committees. Notable speakers at the
event included Ms. Shirin Nariman, a former political prisoner who
supports the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), Dr.
Zahra Sadeghpour, a family member of a martyr and political prisoner of
the Mojahedin, and Ms. Batul Zamani, the head of the Iranian community
in Georgia. Ms. Batul Zamani expressed her appreciation to the senators
for supporting the Iranian people's uprising and providing a venue to
display the exhibition of the martyrs' photos. She emphasized that the
exhibition sends a powerful message that not only has the regime failed
to silence those who revolt against it, but the US Senate also honors
the memory and names of the martyrs. Ms. Nariman reflected on the
ongoing revolution, which is the result of more than four decades of
resistance by thousands of Mojahedin and freedom fighters who sacrificed
their lives to reject the mullahs’ oppressive regime. She expressed
pride in seeing that the voices and messages of girls and young people
from the Iranian uprising have now reached the US Senate. Dr. Sadeghpour
expressed her pride in seeing how the blood of her brothers and sisters,
who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Iran, now flows in the
determination of the defiant youths. She emphasized that the main goal
of the youths is the freedom and prosperity of Iran. The exhibition in
the US Senate was a powerful testimony to the courage and resilience of
those who fought for a better future in Iran. It reflects the same voice
of the Iranian people who continue to resist and fight for a better
future despite the regime's efforts to silence them.>>

<<Iran's Top Sunni Cleric Blasts Government’s Policies in Eid Sermon
Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric criticized the government's handling
of the economic crisis as he led Eid al-Fitr prayers in the
south-eastern city of Zahedan on April 21. After the Ramadan month of
fasting, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid with prayers, feasts and
family visits. Islam's holidays follow a lunar calendar, but some
authorities rely on astronomical calculations rather than physical
sightings, which frequently leads to disagreements over the start date
of Eid. This year, many Arab countries, Afghanistan, Turkey, among
others, began their celebrations on April 21, while Iran's Shia
authorities, Pakistan and other countries set the first day of the
holiday for April 22. However, Molavi Abdulhamid, the Sunni Friday
prayer leader of Zahedan, declared April 21 as Eid al-Fitr, causing a
stir among the Muslim community in Iran. The 76-year-old cleric has been
a key dissenting voice inside Iran since the eruption of nationwide
protests in September 2022 demanding fundamental economic, social and
political changes. Videos published on social media show Eid prayers
being held in Zahedan and other cities in Sistan and Baluchistan, home
to Iran's Sunni Baluch minority of up to 2 million people. Eid prayers
were also performed in the Iranian cities of Kenarak, Khash, Iranshahr,
and multiple cities in Golestan and Kurdistan provinces. In his Eid
sermon, Molavi said that the fall of the national currency has reduced
people's savings to ashes because the government is <unable to manage
the economic crisis.> <We believe that the majority of Iranian citizens
are dissatisfied with the current state of affairs, including government
officials and employees and even the armed forces. The economy is
crippled, and the pressure is being felt by everybody,> he said.>>

<<Exclusive: Protesting Teachers in Iran's Kurdistan Face Severe
Retribution
IranWire has obtained a confidential document showing that the education
authorities in the north-western Iranian province of Kurdistan have
demoted dozens of teachers who supported anti-government protests last
year. The multi-page decree reveals that the province's General
Department of Education formed an <Emergency Committee> on November 7
following an order from the Supreme National Security Council to punish
<leaders of sit-ins and other instigators of recent disturbances.> <The
goal of this committee is to identify influential trade union activists
and systematically suppress them at the provincial level, especially in
the cities of Sanandaj, Marivan and Saqqez,> a source told IranWire.
Teachers have been at the forefront of the protest movement in cities
across Kurdistan by repeatedly going on strike. The Kurdistan Teachers'
Union has published statements and called for rallies demanding
fundamental economic, social and political changes in the country and
criticizing the authorities’ brutal clampdown on dissent. In
retribution, the General Department of Education of Kurdistan issued a
decree to remove at least 35 members of the Teachers Union's provincial
branch from a recently approved ranking system and demoted dozens of
other teachers. Under the new ranking system, teachers' salaries will be
determined by their level of qualification and experience, among other
criteria. One of the stated aims of the new system is to improve the
quality of education. Those included in the decree of the General
Department of Education of Kurdistan are accused of membership in
illegal associations and participation in protests. They are also blamed
for trying to <publish lies,> incite the community of educators and
students, initiate <psychological warfare> and act against internal
security, among other things. IranWire's source said that the education
authorities decided to transfer most cases to the Education Ministry’s
Administrative Violations Board for further investigation, instead of
the general and revolutionary courts.>>

<<Iranian Teens Among Suspects in <Fabricated> School Poisoning Case
Iranian security agents have arrested three female teenagers and two men
from the southern city of Lar over their alleged involvement in chemical
attacks on schools, IranWire has learned. An informed source told
IranWire that the three students are being subjected to intense pressure
to confess to carrying out poisoning attacks, despite their
protestations of innocence. The source said that the five suspects were
arrested <simply because they were protestors> and that <a scenario was
created to accuse them of being involved in the students’ poisoning.>
Two of the students had previously been arrested during anti-government
protests in Lar in December.
Who Are the Suspects?
Since November 2022, hundreds of girls' schools across Iran have been
targeted by poisoning attacks in what Amnesty International described as
<a campaign that appears to be highly coordinated and organized.> As
many as 13,000 pupils have reportedly suffered symptoms including
nausea, fainting, headaches, coughing, breathing difficulties and heart
palpitations, with many requiring treatment in hospital. The government
has claimed to make arrests in connection to the attacks. On March 7,
the police commander of Fars province, where Lar is located, announced
the arrest of five individuals, including two men aged 50 and 22, and
three women. Acting as a <team,> the suspects threw nitrogen gas
canisters into seven schools in Larestan district, poisoning 53
students, according to Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi. Nitrogen, which is the
most abundant element in Earth's atmosphere, is not poisonous.
IranWire's source identified the girls arrested as 12th-grade student
Erfaneh Honar and 10th-grade students Satayesh Amiri and Setayesh
Darogheh. They are all aged 17 years and study at the same high school.
The source identified the two other suspects as Amiri's father, Ebrahim,
and a young man, Alireza Bagheri.>>

Opinion by Gino d'Artali: This is a classic move of an opponent, the
regime, to put the blame on 'scape-goats' to avoid the attention going
to them as being the criminals and guilty ones.
