<<In Retribution, Iran's Authorities Impose Drastic Changes to Movie
Poster
Iranian authorities forced the staff of the film <World War III> to
remove the name of its director and the photo of its main actor from the
movie poster, in yet another move to punish artists and celebrities who
have expressed support for anti-government protests. The film's
distributor, Mohammad Shayesteh, said on April 18 that the charges were
made following orders by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
<We removed the director's name from the advertising posters. Today, the
advertising company was told to remove [Mohsen] Tanabandeh's photo as
well. Now, only a photo of a house remains on the poster. Do we want to
advertise a real estate company?> Shayesteh wrote in an Instagram post.
<World War III,> is a 2022 Iranian thriller drama film co-written,
directed and produced by Houman Seyedi, has started screening in cinemas
throughout the country. The movie won Venice's Orizzonti awards for best
Actor and best Film. It was selected as the Iran entry for the Best
International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards. Tanabandeh and
Seyedi are among many members of Iran's artistic and cultural community
who have voiced support for the nationwide demonstrations sparked by the
September 2022 death of a young woman in police custody and criticized
the authorities' brutal clampdown on dissent. After the Islamic Republic
hanged Mohsen Shekari in December, the first known execution in relation
to the protests, Tanabandeh wrote, <It's an honor to have the same name
as yours, Mohsen jan.> Seyedi dedicated his profile picture on Instagram
to Kian Pirfalak, a nine-year-old boy killed by security forces during
protests in November. Some defiant artists and members of the literary
community have been arrested, summoned or banned, with Islamic Republic
officials accusing them of <fanning the flames of the riots.> Earlier
this week, the minister of culture offered workspace to artists involved
in protests on the condition that they express <regret,> after imposing
a ban on women artists who remove their hijabs in public.>>

<<Iran's Khamenei Says No to Referendums Despite Popular Calls for
Change
Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has ruled out the holding of popular
referendums on state policies amid widespread popular discontent toward
the Islamic Republic. Iranian officials have faced calls for a
referendum on the Islamic Republic itself during nationwide
anti-government protests that erupted in September 2022, with a former
president and an ex-prime minister suggesting such votes should be held
to bring the fundamental changes sought by the people. Khamenei, who has
the final say on all important state matters, rejected the idea on April
19, asking during a meeting with university students, <Where in the
world is this done? Is it possible to hold a referendum for various
issues of the country?> <For any single issue, the country would be
engaged in debate and arguments and polarization for six months, so that
a referendum can be held on that issue,> the 84-year-old cleric added.
Earlier this month, former President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate
who was in office from 2013 to 2021, suggested holding referendums on
domestic and foreign policies, saying that people's problems must be
resolved through fundamental change. In February, ex-Prime Minister Mir
Hossein Musavi, an opposition figure who has been under house arrest
since 2011, called for a referendum and the drafting of a new
constitution. The Islamic Republic holds regular presidential and
parliamentary elections overseen by clerical bodies that vet candidates.
Under the constitution, a referendum is possible if two-thirds of
parliament votes for it and a constitutional body approves.
....
The country saw months of widespread protests sparked by the death of a
young woman who had been detained by the morality police for allegedly
violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress codes. The demonstrations
rapidly escalated into calls for the overthrow of Iran's ruling clerics,
marking a major challenge to their four-decade rule.>>

<<Baha'is Prevented by Ministry of Intelligence Agent from Burials in
Their Own Cemetery
IranWire has received a photo of the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence
agent, Masoud Momeni, who the Baha'i International Community said
yesterday is <preventing and disrupting> the burial of Baha'is at
Tehran's Khavaran cemetery. The bodies of five deceased Baha'is are
being held in a morgue by Momeni, awaiting burial, one of which has
languished there for 22 days. A deceased Baha'i in Tehran, Behzad Majidi,
was buried on 30 March at Khavaran cemetery, as IranWire first reported
last week, without the cemetery officials observing Baha'i funeral
rites, without notifying the family, and after officials had tried to
charge the bereaved an <exorbitant> large sum for the burial. The Baha'i
International Community has now reported that an agent of the Ministry
of Intelligence, Masoud Momeni, carried out the burial in relatiation
against the Baha'is for not paying the sum and in a part of the cemetery
previously used by the Iranian government as a mass grave for political
prisoners. The agent, whose Ministry of Intelligence affiliation was
previously revealed by Tehran municipality staff, had first demanded
that the family pay an exorbitant fee for burial within plots already
owned and previously managed by the Baha'i community. He threatened the
family that failure to meet his demands would result in the burial
taking place at the site of the mass grave. And in a further development
over the weekend, the same intelligence agent threatened to bury another
Baha'i under the same circumstance if the family of the deceased also
refused to yield to his demands. <What threat do the dead pose that
justifies this ruthless treatment by the Iranian government,> said Simin
Fahandej, a Representative of the Baha'i International Community (BIC)
to the United Nations, <that they extend the persecution of Baha'is even
after their death, following a lifetime of oppression imposed on them in
every aspect of their living moments?> >>

<<Iranian Students Denied Education for Seeking Freedom and Justice
After the widespread arrests and imprisonment of students who had been
at the forefront of the 2022-2023 uprising, the Iranian regime has begun
depriving students of education to exert more pressure on this
intellectual and freedom-loving class. Among those who were denied
education are a considerable number of female students. The students who
were denied education included Zahra Rahimi, a chemistry student at Yazd
University; Shahin Dabestani, a medical science student in Tabriz; Aida
Ghorbani, an Italian language student at Tehran University; Shakiba
Hoshiar, a mechanical engineering student at Razi University in
Kermanshah, Niloufar Mirzaii, a graphics student at Al-Zahra University
in Tehran, and students from Damghan University such as Bahareh Davani,
Mobina Yaqubzadeh, Mahsa Soltani, and Parizad Esmaili.
Student falls ill during the disciplinary committee hearing
On April 16, the Disciplinary Council of Yazd University handed down a
two-year ban on studying to Zahra Rahimi, a chemistry student. The day
before, on April 15, she had been summoned for the third time to the
disciplinary committee, where the university president insulted her. The
intense mental pressure she experienced caused her condition to
deteriorate, so an ambulance had to be called for her as she suffered
from a heart condition.
....
Additionally, on April 12, news of Niloufar Mirzaii's exclusion from
education was reported. Niloufar Mirzaii, a graphics student at Al-Zahra
University, was arrested on November 1, 2022, during nationwide protests
by plainclothes officers and taken to Evin prison. Her court session was
held two months later, on January 30, and she was among the prisoners
released from prison on February 12, 2023. The disciplinary committee of
Al-Zahra University has suspended her education for two semesters, and
she is not allowed to use the university dormitory until the end of her
studies. This ruling makes it very difficult for Nilufar to continue her
studies.
....
Punished for Seeking Freedom and Justice
These students have committed no crime other than seeking freedom and
justice. Zahra Rahimi, a student at Yazd University who fell ill during
her disciplinary committee hearing, took to Twitter after recovering,
saying: <During the committee meeting, as I felt sick and struggled to
breathe, my heart pounding more restlessly than ever, I could only think
of one thing: when will Iran, when will humanity see happiness? I am
sorry for this cruelty. I am sorry to those who brought me to the brink
of death. They did this to me, a twenty-year-old girl. Zahra has come
back from the dead. Though her hands are still shaking and it's hard for
her to breathe, she shares this post to let everyone know she is still
alive.> >>

<<Iranian Medical Couple Sentenced to Total of 20 Years in Prison
An Iranian court has sentenced a medical couple to a total of 20 years
in prison in connection to the alleged killing of a member of the
paramilitary Basij force during protests, activists say. The court in
Karaj, near Tehran, sentenced Hamid Ghareh Hasanlou, a radiologist, to
15 years, while his wife Farzaneh, a lab technician, was handed a
five-year sentence, Dadban, a network of Iranian lawyers, said on April
18. It said the two prisoners have not received medical treatment
despite their <worrying physical conditions.> The man has suffered
serious injuries to his pelvis and lungs and sustained damage to his
eyes as a result of beatings. The couple was arrested after it
participated in a November 3 ceremony in Karaj marking the 40th day
since the killing of a teenage protester, Hadis Najafi, by security
forces. Hamid Ghareh Hassanlou, 53, was initially handed capital
punishment on December 5, while his wife received a 25-year prison
sentence. The case stemmed from the killing of a Basiji, identified as
Ruhollah Ajamian, in Karaj on November 3. Local media quoted the
judiciary chief of Alborz province as saying on November 12 that the
militiaman was killed by <rioters,> a term used by officials to describe
anti-government protesters who have taken to the streets across Iran
since September 2022. Pic- tures of Ajamian holding an assault rifle and
being trained to suppress protesters later circulated on social
networks. Several other people have been arrested in connection to
Ajamian’s alleged killing. Two young men, Mohammad Mahdi Karmi and
Mohammad Hosseini, were executed amid international condemnation.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Seif-Ali <Arbitrarily> Re-Arrested
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is calling on Iranian
authorities to immediately release journalist Saeed Seif-Ali and drop
any charges against him. <Authorities must let members of the press do
their work without fear that they will be subject to arbitrary arrest
and detention,> Sherif Mansour, the New York-based media freedom
watchdog's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said in a
statement on April 17.
News reports quoted the journalist's wife Asal Ismaeilzadeh as saying
that Seif-Ali, editor-in-chief of the state-run news website
Didbaniran.ir, was summoned to court on April 11 to meet with a judge
about a previous arrest. CPJ said it was unable to determine where he is
being held or whether any charges have been filed against him. Seif-Ali
was previously detained on January 7 and was released on bail after
eight days. According to CPJ, Iranian authorities have arrested at least
95 journalists since September 2022, when the death in morality-police
custody of a 22-year-old woman sparked nationwide protests.
Didbaniran.ir covered those protests and journalists' arrests at the
