<<Kurdish Singer Abbaszadeh Faces Arrest Again
Iranian security forces have detained Kurdish singer Mohammad
Abbaszadeh, according to a report by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights.
The 35-year-old from Ilam province was reportedly arrested upon
returning from Nowruz celebrations in Shuhan city. His current
whereabouts and condition are unknown. This is not the first time
Abbaszadeh has faced persecution by Iranian authorities. In October
2022, he was detained for singing a protest song. Released on bail a
month later, he received a suspended sentence of two years'
imprisonment, a travel ban, and a fine.
In April 2023, Abbaszadeh faced more charges for criticizing
chemical attacks on schools on social media platforms. The poisonings
had started in late November 2022, causing anxiety among parents and
students. Some Iranians have suggested that the poisonings could be an
attempt to force the closure of girls' schools or a retaliation for
students and women leading anti-government demonstrations. While Iranian
political figures and activists have described the wave of poisonings as
<chemical> and <biological> attacks, officials have only admitted there
may be a problem.>>

<<Women's Committee Condemns the Conviction of 11 Political Prisoners,
Including 10 Women, to Long Prison Terms,
Calls for an Investigation into the Suspicious Death of Sara Tabrizi
after her Detention by the Ministry of Intelligence
The NCRI Women's Committee condemns the conviction of 11 political
prisoners, including 10 women, to long prison terms, and calls for an
investigation into the suspicious death of Sara Tabrizi after her
detention by the Ministry of Intelligence. According to government media
reports, the prisoners were sentenced to between 6 and 9.5 years in
prison by Branch 3 of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht. They were
arrested on August 16, 2023, in the cities of Rasht, Lahijan, Anzali,
and Fooman. At the time, the regime’s Intelligence Department in Gilan
Province announced the arrest of a 12-member team <that was planning and
acting to foment unrest and sabotage on the anniversary of the riots of
the past fall> (state-run ISNA news agency, August 17, 2023). According
to the verdicts, Zahra Dadras was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison for
<forming a group and assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt
national security.> The other 10 prisoners were each sentenced to more
than 6 years in prison. The last defendant was acquitted. The NCRI
Women's Committee strongly condemns the issuance of these criminal
sentences by the judiciary of the misogynist clerical regime. It calls
on the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, the UN Special
Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran, the UN Fact-Finding
Mission, and other human rights defenders to take immediate action to
secure the release of political prisoners, especially women.
The Women's Committee also calls for an international investigation into
the suspicious death of Sara Tabrizi, a young woman who was found dead
at her father's house a while after being arrested by the Ministry of
Intelligence. In recent years, a significant number of political
prisoners and prisoners of the uprising have died suspiciously after
being released.

Sara Tabrizi

<<Sara Tabrizi, 20, found dead in suspicious circumstances
The body of a young woman was discovered on March 24, 2024, at her
residence in Tehran. Identified as Sara Tabrizi, aged 20, she was laid
to rest in Eskaman Township, Tehran Province, on March 25. The
circumstances surrounding Sara Tabrizi's death are regarded as
suspicious. According to the preliminary report from the Coroner's
Office, she had ingested pills in an apparent suicide. The report was
delivered to the Tabrizi family in the presence of security forces. Sara
Tabrizi had been enduring pressure from security forces and
interrogators for months, urging her to cooperate with intelligence
services. Her ordeal began on November 16, 2023, when she was
apprehended at an airport while departing Iran for the UK with her aunt.
She was then transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, under the
jurisdiction of the Intelligence Ministry. After three days in solitary
confinement, during which she suffered heart palpitations and high blood
pressure due to the stress of isolation, she was moved to the infirmary
and subsequently transferred to a cell for three. Following the
conclusion of her interrogations after ten days, she was released on
bail amounting to one billion tomans.
Even after her release, Sara Tabrizi continued to face threats from her
interrogator, warning her of imprisonment in solitary confinement and
the potential publication of her mobile phone's contents if she did not
cooperate with security forces. On January 8, 2023, she was summoned and
subjected to several hours of interrogation before being taken to the
women’s ward of Evin Prison. After a few days, she was temporarily
released on a bail of two billion tomans. Branch 26 of the Tehran
Revolutionary Court sentenced Sara Tabrizi to suspended prison time on
charges of <insulting the mullahs' leader Ali Khamenei and using forged
documents and a passport that belonged to someone else.> >>

<<Iranian Journalist Stabbed in London
An Iranian journalist with a London-based, Farsi-language TV news
channel was attacked outside his house Friday, the network reported.
Pouria Zeraati, the television host of the <Last Word> program of Iran
International channel, was assaulted by a group of unidentified
individuals as he left his London home. Zeraati sustained knife wounds
across several parts of his body. He is currently in a stable condition
but remains hospitalized, the network reported. The Metropolitan Police
in London has launched an investigation into the attack. While the
motive remains unclear, the reported attack comes just a few months
after the revelation of a plot by the Islamic Republic to assassinate
two other Iran International journalists. In November 2022, London
Police protected Iran International's offices after having received
intelligence of real threats against two of the channel's journalists in
London. In early 2023, the network was forced to temporarily cease
operations in London and relocate its broadcasting studios to
Washington. Operations resumed at a new London location in September of
that year. Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib said in an
interview with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's website in late 2022 that
those who work with Iran International TV would be <pursued> by his
ministry.
<From now on, any kind of connection with this terrorist organization
will be considered to be tantamount to entering the field of terrorism
and a threat to national security,> he said. Volant Media, Iran
International's broadcaster, said in a statement at the time that two
British-Iranian journalists working in Britain had received <death
threats from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG).> It described
the threats as a <dangerous escalation> of attempts by the Islamic
Republic to silence media in the face of nationwide protests.>>

Gholami Simiyari on May 18, 2023, in Tehran and took her to one of the

psychological and physical torture to extract confessions. The
interrogator of Branch 3 of the Prosecutor’s Office in Tehran's 33rd
District has charged Ms. Gholami with the following offenses:
disseminating propaganda against the state, engaging in assembly and
collusion to disrupt national security, and membership in groups and

Iranwire - 28 March 2024 - ROGHAYEH REZAEI
<<Cutting off Fingers for Theft: Iran Continues Controversial Punishment
While Iranian society grapples with the aftermath of the flogging of
Roya Heshmati, an activist opposing mandatory hijab laws, the Chief of
Justice of Qom province has directed finger amputation of individuals
charged with theft. The practice of finger amputation persists in Iran
despite it being widely condemned as a form of torture under
international conventions. Questions have risen regarding the rationale
behind such actions by the Islamic Republic in the 21st century.
Instances of finger amputation as punishment are becoming more frequent,
particularly in major Iranian cities where reports of theft and
precarity are on the rise. As law enforcement struggles to ensure
citizen safety and protect property, the Chief of Justice of Qom
province handed down the finger amputation sentence. During interviews
with domestic media outlets, the judicial official detailed the case
involving a group of three individuals accused of multiple counts of
robbery and theft, utilizing tactics such as breaking into homes at
night armed with weapons and employing fraudulent license plates.
Following the completion of investigations, the two individuals were
sentenced to finger amputation, as decreed by the Qom Prosecutor's
Office. The execution of finger amputation sentences in Qom starkly
contrasts with repeated calls from international bodies, including the
United Nations, urging Iran to cease such practices. Earlier, the United
Nations had urged Iran to halt the implementation of finger amputation
sentences for eight prisoners. In the summer of 2022, the UN Human
Rights Office expressed serious concern over the impending execution of
these sentences, calling for a revision of Iran's criminal laws to
abolish practices like amputation, flogging, and stoning. In 2023, the
Iran Human Rights organization, based in Norway, reported on plans to
amputate the fingers of seven prisoners in Greater Tehran Prison
convicted of theft. Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, the organization's
director, appealed to diplomatic entities engaging with Iran to exert
pressure to annul these rulings immediately. Hasan Fereshtian, a
religious scholar and lawyer, emphasized the incompatibility of finger
amputation with human dignity, urging its cessation despite its limited
occurrence within the Islamic Republic's judicial system. Fereshtian
asserted that even one instance of finger amputation is unacceptable and
ineffective as a deterrent, as it fails to resonate with societal values
of justice and proportionality. Regarding the persistence of such
punishments despite their ineffectiveness, Farshtian highlighted the
ideological commitment of the Islamic Republic to Sharia law, viewing
its implementation as essential to maintaining identity and legitimacy.
Additionally, he noted a secondary motive to appease a minority of
extremist supporters who advocate for the enforcement of Sharia
principles. Fereshtian raised pertinent questions regarding the
application of Sharia law in contemporary Iran. He posited two crucial
inquiries: Firstly, whether the Sharia law from the inception of Islam
remains relevant today, and secondly, whether Sharia law should indeed
be enforced in modern Iran. Fereshtian acknowledged that punishment by
amputation holds significance in Islamic Sharia, often cited as a
quintessential aspect of its legal framework. The scholar underscored
the discrepancy between historical context and contemporary morality,
denouncing finger amputations as an unjust and degrading punishment
incompatible with modern values. Moreover, Fereshtian addressed societal
stigmatization surrounding theft allegations and the lack of
transparency within the judiciary system, which obscures the true extent
of finger amputation sentences.>>

lawyer Saeed Gholamian, the Kashan Revolutionary Court sentenced Moslehi
to 15 months and one day in prison for <insulting the leadership> and to
seven months and one day for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.>
In a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the journalist's

sentence of three years and one month for <insulting sanctity> and one
year and three months for <spreading lies.> Under the Islamic Penal

month, will be enforced. Ali Moslehi was arrested at his residence in
Kashan on July 20, 2023. After 70 days in detention, he was temporarily
released pending the court convening and the verdict being issued.
Moslehi was a political columnist for a local news website called
