<<Iranian Judiciary Imposes Death Sentence on Activist Musician Toomaj
Salehi
Toomaj Salehi, a protest rapper who was arrested during the Woman, Life,
Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) Movement, has been sentenced to capital
punishment by Branch One of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court on
allegations of <corruption on earth.> According to a report obtained by
the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Wednesday, April 24, 2024,
Amir Raiesian, one of Toomaj Salehi's defense attorneys, stated in an
interview with <Shargh Channel>: <The Isfahan Revolutionary Court, in an
unprecedented decision, has not applied the Supreme Court's verdict on
Toomaj Salehi's case from 2022, and so by interpreting this ruling as
'Directory Statue' and emphasizing the trial court's independence,
sentenced Mr.Salehi to execution on charges of corruption on earth.>
Raiesian further stated: <The Isfahan Revolutionary Court considered the
allegations of partnership in rebellion, consensus and collusion,
propaganda against the government, and incitement to riot as instances
of corruption on earth under Article 286 of the Penal Code, and based on
these presumptions and emphasizing the authentication of the corruption,
it issued a death sentence for Mr. Salehi. This is despite the fact that
the same branch had not previously confirmed the authentication of the
corruption on earth charge. However, even more strangely, the trial
court also considered a supplementary sentence alongside the execution
verdict and sentenced Toomaj Salehi to two years of travel ban, ban on
artistic activities, and participation in behavioral skill improvement
classes held at the Isfahan Judiciary Center.> Salehi had previously
been sentenced by the same branch of the court to six years and three
months of imprisonment and had been sentenced to a travel ban as
supplementary penalties for the allegation of <corruption on earth>.
Salehi had been acquitted of the allegations of <insulting Khomeini,>
<insulting Khamenei,> and <communicating with hostile states.> After
enduring one year and 21 days of imprisonment, 252 days of which were
spent in solitary confinement, and overturning the six years and three
months of imprisonment sentence by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court, on
November 18, 2023, Toomaj Salehi was temporarily released from Isfahan
Central Prison pending the completion of his trial proceedings. Salehi
was arrested on October 30, 2022, amidst the protests of the Woman,
Life, Freedom movement in the village of Gerd Bisheh in Gandoman
District, Borujen County, Chaharmahal, and Bakhtiari Province. This
artist was arrested for the second time on November 30, 2023, by armed
security forces in Babol City in a violent manner, along with beatings.
Since then, he has been transferred to the Dastgerd detention center in
Isfahan city and is currently being held in custody there.>>

<<Iranian Prisoners Announce Hunger Strike Over Death Penalty Surge
A large number of political and non-political prisoners in Iranian jails,
including those in Ghezelhesar, Evin, and Karaj, have initiated a hunger
strike to protest the recent surge in the use of the death penalty.
This action marks the twelfth week of their <No to Execution Tuesdays
Campaign.>
Their primary concern is the increased use of the death penalty by the
Iranian judicial system.
Recent weeks have seen a rise in the silent executions of non-political
prisoners.
Additionally, several inmates have been transferred to solitary
confinement in Ghezelhesar and other facilities, seemingly slated for
imminent execution. News reports suggest a new wave of repression
through harsh death sentences implemented by the judicial and security
forces.
Over the past few days, eight prisoners have been executed. According to
a report by the Iran Human Rights Organization, the Islamic Republic
executed approximately 834 individuals last year.>>

prisoners and a Kurdish prisoner along with an Afghan national
previously sentenced to death for drug trafficking, were carried out in
Kerman Central Prison, Ghezel Hesar Prison, and Chabahar Prisons in
Karaj. According to reports obtained by the Hengaw organization for
Human Rights, on the early morning of Sunday, April 21st, 2024, the
execution sentences for Ahmadreza Miri, 34 years old, from Zabol,
Shamsaldin Kashani, 53 years old, and Shokat Shahbakhsh, both from
Zahedan, along with a Kurdish prisoner, Jamal Mardani, 54 years old,
from Miandoab, West Azerbaijan province, were implemented. The identity
of another Baloch inmate also executed is under investigation. As
reported by the 'Haalvsh' news agency, these six prisoners were
transferred to solitary confinement on Friday for the execution of their
death sentences and had their last visit with their families yesterday.
At the same time, two other Baloch inmates, by the names of Saaid Jadgal
(30 years old) and Mohammad Anjomrooz (33 years old), both from
Dashtyari in Sistan and Baloucchistan province, were executed in the
central prison in Chabahar. Furthermore, the execution of two prisoners,
Alireza Shahbaz, 38 years old, from Tehran, and Abdulbari Pashtu, an
Afshan national, both of whom were also sentenced to death for drug
trafficking, was carried out in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. These two
inmates, both married and with children, were transferred to solitary
confinement yesterday for the execution of their death sentences. As of
the time of compiling this report, the execution of these nine inmates
has not been announced in government-affiliated media, especially media

Opinion by Gino d'Artali: In the past week approximately 6 inmates were
excecuted after being trialed for drug-related crimes. Now, I as a
reporter have to be not only objective but my humanity funded heart has
a saying too and for me fact is that narcotics do more harm than thought
of and not only and often kills the addicted by using it but moreso does
a lot of harm too to the users beloved ones and family. I've seen it in
my surroundings and will never forget 'Sjan' (name changed for privacy
reasons) whose boyfriend was a dealer and addicted and made her an
addict too and so destroyed her life. In short: of course I know the
holy Quran says one can only kill another human being out of
self-defence but... the question really is if one can defend a
drugs-trafficker/-addict when he/she destroys another human beings life
by being so? My personal answer and decision: I'll not report anylonger
about drugs-related news. I do feel sorry for the ones being so severely
being punished for their crimes but still I say: Think before you start
with drugs and especially be a positive contributing part of your
community.
