Women of Idlib
Jinha - Womens News Agency - April 4, 2024 - by HADEEL Al-OMAR
<<Women of Idlib: We have no right to decide
Women of Idlib have no right to make decisions about their own lives and
face restrictions and all kinds of discrimination.
Idlib- Due to deepening inequality in Idlib, women are subjected to all
kinds of discrimination and restrictions by their families and in the
public spaces. They are deprived of their rights due to traditions and
customs, even their right to make decisions about their own lives and
their children's lives. 44-year-old Rama Al-Hussein thinks that women
are subjected to restrictions by their families. <The women’s rights are
ignored although they make up almost half of Idlib's population due to
the patriarchal mindset in society,> she told NuJINHA.
'The curriculum reinforces social inequalities' According to 38-year-old
Fatima Al-Issa, the curriculum reinforces social inequalities in Idlib.
<At school, the children learn that women can only be housewives
weaving, cooking, washing, cleaning and taking care of their children.
They learn that only men can become doctors, leaders and presidents. Due
to the curriculum, women’s roles in society are underestimated.>
'I didn't even have a say in the marriage of my daughter'
37-year-old Sara Abdulkarim has no say in her family. <My husband makes
decisions about everything. He forced our daughter into marriage when
she was only 15. I could not prevent this marriage because I didn't even
have a say in the marriage of my daughter. My husband destroyed our
daughter's future when she was just a child.>
'They are subjected to all forms of violence'
NuJINHA spoke to Yasmin Al-Alloush, a psychosocial counselor in Idlib,
about the restrictions and discrimination faced by the women of Idlib.
<Women of Idlib are subjected to all forms of violence such as
psychological, sexual and economic violence,> she said. <Traditions and
customs cause women to suffer from inequalities. The women of Idlib need
awareness-raising activities about their rights. Women should be
supported to enjoy their rights and participate in the labor force.
Vocational training courses can be provided to them so that they can
boost self-confidence and reveal their abilities.> >>

Warrioresses of YPJ
Jinha - Womens News Agency - April 4, 2024 - by SILVA Al-IBRAHIM
<<11th anniversary of YPJ: We are proud of every step in our journey
<We are proud of every step in our journey. Despite all the challenges,
we fight for our people,> said the women fighters of the YPJ,
celebrating the 11th anniversary of the YPJ.
Manbij- April 4 marks the foundation anniversary of the Women's Defense
Units (YPJ). NuJINHA spoke to the members of the Manbij Women's Military
Council about the 11th foundation anniversary of the YPJ. Solin Efrin,
member of the council, was displaced from Afrin to Manbij along with her
family due to the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions on March 18, 2018. Then, she joined the Manbij Women’s Military
Council a year ago. <I joined the council because I was impressed by the
strong will and determination of women fighters. I want to defend my
people, liberate my city occupied by the Turkish state and
Turkish-backed factions and change the patriarchal mindset that affects
our society,> said Solin Efrin. <The difference between women's life in
the army and in society is that the army gives women the opportunity to
express their opinion, build their strong personality and improve their
ability in decision-making. Unfortunately, women are always victims of
outdated traditions and customs in their society and they are subjected
to all forms of violence by their tribe, family and spouse. The
patriarchal mindset weakens women's personality, turning them into a
passive object devoid of their own will.>
'I have changed since I joined the council'
Since Solin Efrin joined the Manbij Women's Military Council, many
things have changed in her life. <Joining the Manbij Military Council
has a positive impact on my personality and existence. I have changed
since I joined the council. It encourages me to express myself and my
thoughts freely.>
Thousands of women take up arms
<We heard that many women took up arms. When the Manbij offensive
started, we saw how thousands of women took up arms to fight ISIS along
with the YPJ fighters,> said Elam Minbic, a fighter of the council.
<Thousands of women joined the YPJ to liberate our city. ISIS turned the
lives of women into darkness in Manbij. Many women became victims of
ISIS's extremist ideology. My cousin was one of them. She was killed
with her son during the month of Ramadan by ISIS because she did not
wear a black burqa.>
'Liberating women was our first goal'
ISIS tried to force Elam Minbic into a marriage with one of ISIS
members. <But I refused. I joined the Manbij Women’s Military Council
after my cousin was killed by ISIS. Many women fighters such as Kojrin
and Rojbin Arab, who were killed while fighting to liberate Manbij,
inspired me to join the council. They sacrificed their lives to liberate
the city, women in particular, from ISIS. Liberating women and the city
was our first goal.>
'Women made a difference'
The patriarchal mindset is a deep-rooted mindset and it cannot be
changed overnight, emphasized Elam Minbic. <The women of North and East
Syria have changed this deep-rooted mindset. Now, they participate in
politics, social life, military and all facets of life. They have
changed their society. Today is an important day for us, women, because
women began to rise up on April 4 to protect themselves and their people
and they founded their own defense units.>
'We are proud of every step in our journey'
Elam Minbic wished a happy April 4 to all women demanding freedom and
concluded her speech as follows:
<We were inspired by the YPJ fighters, who took up arms despite the
traditions and customs in our society. We are proud of every step in our
journey. Despite all the challenges, we fight for our people. One of the
challenges faced by us is the ongoing Turkish attacks targeting women
fighting ISIS. Despite these attacks, we are determined to liberate
women and our region.> >>

April 4 women
Jinha - Womens News Agency - April 4, 2024 - by RAPERIN BEKIR
<<'April 4 is the birthday of all humanity'
Women of Afrin and Shahba wished a happy birthday to Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan, emphasizing, <April 4 is the birthday of all humanity.>
Shahba- Celebrations have been taking place across North and East Syria
to mark the birthday of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, April 4. NuJINHA
spoke to the women of Afrin and Shehba about their feelings and thoughts
on the 75th birthday of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. <The resistance
waged by people and fighters in the mountains of Kurdistan and North and
East Syria is a historical resistance,> said Arin Bekir, deputy chair of
the Women's Council in Afrin/Shahba Canton. An international conspiracy
was conducted against leader Abdullah Öcalan, the architect of the
system based on democracy in North and East Syria. We condemn this
conspiracy. The people and fighters are determined to thwart the
policies of capitalist countries.>
'We will always keep our promise'
Arin Bekir is a displaced woman from Afrin. <We always emphasize that we
will resist in Shehba due to our commitment to Ocalan's thoughts and
philosophy. We will always keep our promise and follow up Ocalan's
thoughts and philosophy. Leader Ocalan freed women from thousands of
years of slavery. He strengths and values women. Women began to play
their roles in society after learning the thoughts and philosophy of
leader Ocalan. Now, women play important roles in their society. Leader
Ocalan was born in the village of Amara on April 4, 1948. I wish his
birthday brings freedom to all people and women struggling against
injustice and enslavement.>
'He is a global leader'
<Women have suffered due to the patriarchal mentality for thousands of
years,> said Rehab Jabo. <The outdated traditions and customs prevented
women from playing their roles in society and enjoying their rights. As
the ideology of freedom spread across North and East Syria, women began
to rise up against injustice and to demand their rights. The ideology,
philosophy and analysis of leader Apo are not only for the Kurdish
people, but also for all people living in the world. For this reason, he
is a global leader.>
'We will spread this system all over the world'
Rehab Jabo pointed out that the isolation imposed by the Turkish state
on Abdullah Ocalan could not imprison his thoughts. <Many countries were
involved in the international conspiracy; however, they cannot eliminate
the philosophy of freedom and the system based on democracy even though
they impose isolation on him. Our struggle will continue until leader
Ocalan regains his physical freedom. We will spread the system based on
democracy not only in North and East Syria but also all over the world.>
'We will not give up resisting'
<April 4 is the birthday of all humanity,> said Cihan İsmail. <We
learned what a free life is thanks to leader Ocalan's thoughts and
philosophy. The organizations defending the rights of prisoners must
fulfill their responsibilities so that leader Ocalan can see his lawyers
and family members. They should put pressure on the Turkish state. We
will not give up resisting until leader Ocalan regains his physical
freedom and his ideology spreads all over the world.> >>

We never give away
Jinha - Womens News Agency - April 3, 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<'We never give away what is ours'
<We never give away what is ours,> said Fatma Gulan Önkol, Co-mayor of
Sur Municipality, reacting to the usurpation of the will of people in
Van.
Amed (Diyarbakır) - The ruling party AKP was defeated in the local
elections held on March 31 in Turkish and Kurdish cities. In Kurdish
cities, the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) has won
majorities of the municipalities despite the election fraud and
“transported voters”. Being defeated in Kurdish cities, the AKP
continues to manipulate the election results; Abdullah Zeydan, DEM
Party's Co-mayoral candidate for Van Metropolitan Municipality, was
divested of his right to be elected five minutes before the end of the
working day on Friday, March 29, 2024, upon the objection of Turkey's
Justice Ministry although he received the majority of votes in the
cities on March 31. After the DEM Party announced this on Tuesday,
people took to the streets of Kurdish cities to protest the usurpation
of their will. In an interview with NuJINHA, Fatma Gulan Onkol, Co-mayor
of Sur Municipality in Amed (Diyarbakır), reacted to the decision,
saying, <We will never get used to> what happened in Van. Jiyan Aslan,
municipal council member of the Rezan (Baglar) said, <We are from here
and we will go nowhere”, empathizing that the policies implemented in
Kurdish cities will never be successful.
'We never give away what is ours'
Recalling the DEM Party's success in local elections, Fatma Gulan Onkol
said, <The will of the people were usurped after two local elections by
appointed trustees. In the local elections on March 31, the people
reflected their will and took back their municipalities from the
appointed municipalities. We took back what is ours; however, those who
appointed mayors to our municipalities, try to usurp our will again. We
do not accept the appointed mayors and never give away what is ours. I
call on our people to protect their will. Everyone should know very well
that we would not accept such decisions and policies.>
'These policies will not achieve their goals'
Jiyan Aslan emphasized that they would never accept such policies to be
normalized. <We will always struggle against such policies. On March 31,
we took back our municipalities from the appointed mayors with our will.
Such policies are never accepted by people. These policies target the
co-presidential system and women. The AKP tries to usurp the will of
people in Van because it was defeated in Kurdish cities on March 31. We
will resist to the end. These policies will not achieve their goals.
Everyone should respect the will of the people in Van.> >>

state and Turkish-backed factions on March 18, 2018. The displaced
people of Afrin keep resisting the Turkish attacks on the canton. In

canton. <We will respond to the occupation attacks with our resistance.>

Lamia Şeixo, one of the women living in the canton, pointed to the
massacres conducted by the Turkish state in North and East Syria. <The
Turkish state has occupied many cities such as Idlib, Azaz, Afrin and
Gire Spi (Tell Abyad). The Turkish state wants to complete its colonial
project by occupying many cities with international support. It
maintains its attacks aiming to displace people from their homelands.>
