<<Arrested Iranian Journalist Abbasi Kept in Undisclosed Location
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) urges the Iranian authorities
to release journalist Hasan Abbasi immediately and unconditionally, drop
any charges against him and put an end to <the practice of arbitrarily
locking up members of the press for doing their jobs.> <Authorities must
ensure that all journalists are able to cover newsworthy issues without
fear that they will be arrested,> CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez
de la Serna said in a statement on May 4.Abbasi, a freelance
investigative reporter who covers news in the southern city of Bandar
Abbas, was arrested on April 30 following a complaint filed by Hormozgan
province’s governor over his reporting, according to news reports, amid
a crackdown on dissent and the media. It remains unclear where Abbasi is
being held or whether he has been formally charged. Reports said that
the complaint against Abbasi was filed in response to his coverage in
the semi-official outlet AshkanNews of retired sailors who had failed to
receive their pensions. Four days before his arrest, Abbasi posted a
video on social media saying that he was also facing another complaint
filed by the local office of the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Trade
accusing him of spreading <fake news> in his reporting on the ministry.
In December 2022, Abbasi was reportedly detained for his critical
coverage of alleged government corruption, was held for a week and
charged with disturbing the public order and spreading false news on
social media. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Iranian
authorities have arrested more than 95 journalists since anti-government
protests erupted across the country following the September death in
police custody of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini.>>

MEMO - Middle East Monitor - May 4, 2023
<<Iran, Syria rank lowest for press freedom globally
Syria and Iran's media landscapes are among the most censored in the
world according to the World Press Freedom Index 2023 issued by
Reporters Without Borders (RSF). RSF issued its annual report yesterday,
to coincide with the World Press Freedom Day, and highlighted how Syria
and Iran have maintained their position among the most dangerous
countries for journalists to operate. According to the report, Syria
ranked 175 out of 180 countries in 2023, with Iran ranking at 177 with
only Vietnam, China and North Korea being classed as more oppressive.
....
The index, which included 180 countries, indicated that the situation is
very good in eight countries, good in 44 countries, problematic in 55
countries, difficult in 42 countries and very dangerous in 31 countries.
....
According to the RSF report, the press is still under suffocating
control in the Middle East, whether at the hands of authoritarian
regimes or due to censorship imposed by armed militias, noting that
press freedom is considered extremely dangerous in more than half of the
region's countries.>>

Note first by Gino: yes, the below reference and quote seems to have all
to do with the situation of journalists in Turkey but nothing is less
through as you will and hopefully continue to read 'Iranian journalists
under siege' because the situation for journalists in Iran is the same
as is in Turkey and last but definitely not least Jina Mahsa Amini,
killed by a basij for apparently wearing her hijab wrongfully and that
factually started the 'Mahsa revolution' and she, Allah has her soul,
was Kurdish.

<<32 journalists arrested in 10 months: We can get out of the darkness
with solidarity
News Center- In the last 10 months, four detention operations have been
conducted against journalists and press workers. In these operations
based in Amed (Diyarbakır) and Ankara, 32 journalists have been arrested
on terrorism-related charges. In the last house raids conducted between
April 25 and April 29, six journalists, including Dicle Fırat
Journalists' Association Co-chair Dicle Muftuoglu, were arrested. Turkey
will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, 2023. As
the 2023 elections approach, the arrests of journalists, lawyers and
political activists are thought to be a great risk for election
security. In an interview with NuJINHA, women journalists say the
detention operations will not reach their goals and the struggle for
truth will continue. Journalist Evrim Kepenek thinks journalists are
targeted because they witness the ongoing rights violations in the
country.
'The aim is to silence society'
Emphasizing that the detention operations aim to design not only
journalists but also society through Kurdish journalists, Evrim Kepenek
said, <Those who carry out these operations know that when journalists
and lawyers are arrested in Diyarbakır, we will send a message to
everyone across Turkey. One of the aims of these operations is to
silence society while another aim is to prevent receiving information
from the (Kurdish) region before the elections. They think that the more
we weaken the Kurdish agencies, the more we will prevent the rights
violations in the region from being reported. However, they forget that
Kurdish journalists have not kept silent although many operations have
been carried out against them for years. The Kurdish journalists always
find a way to report the truth to the public in its simplest form.>
'The successors of Ape Musa will continue to work'
Evrim Kepenek says that Kurdish journalists have experiences to overcome
this process with their own strength. <Silence harms Kurdish journalists
but creates a more difficult situation for those who identify themselves
as both journalists and democrats.> Evrim Kepenek calls on everyone to
speak out against the injustice practices against journalists. Breaking
the silence is, of course, essential for the arrested journalists but it
is more essential for our society. Our colleagues do nothing but
journalism. These bad days will pass as they passed before and the
successors of Ape Musa will continue to work by holding their heads
high. None of us will care what happens to those who remain silent. They
(The government) try to create a whirlwind out of silence and include
everyone in it. But there is a very strong whirlwind of journalism
practice and tradition against that whirlwind of silence.>
'Journalists are arrested for their journalistic activities'
Journalist Sibel Yukler spoke about Turkey's new 'disinformation' law.
<This law is a blow against journalism. The detention operations against
Kurdish journalists are political operations. Many investigations have
been launched against journalists to deactivate press outlets. The
accusations against journalists are based on the statements given by
secret witnesses. There is no evidence to accuse journalists. For this
reason, journalists are asked, 'Why did you report?' Nowhere in the
world, the report of the journalist covering the lynching of Syrians is
not shown as a crime; however, the journalists arrested as part of an
investigation launched in Ankara are accused of covering the lynching of
Syrians. Issuing an arrest warrant against journalists on
terrorism-related charges for covering the murder of the Dedeoglu family
clearly reveals that these operations are political operations against
journalists.>
'The operations also raise concerns about the security of the upcoming
elections'
<The operations launched against journalists in the past 10 months are
against the will of the Kurdish people and the upcoming elections,>
Sibel Yükler said, <The detention operations against journalists, NGOs,
political activists, lawyers and artists can be seen as a pre-election
message to the freedom of politics, press, expression and association.>
'We can get out of the darkness with solidarity'
Sibel Yukler called on human rights organizations and journalists'
organizations to immediately take action against the recent crackdown on
journalists. Once, journalist Abdurrahman Gök told me: 'If fear is
dominating a society and journalists surrender to it, the whole society
will be plunged into darkness. Journalists are those who save society
from darkness. We can get out of the darkness with solidarity.'> >>

<<Whereabouts of 74-Year-Old Journalist Unknown Two Weeks after Arrest
Detained dissident journalist Keyvan Samimi has been held at an
undisclosed location, incommunicado, for 14 days, his daughter says. In
a tweet on May 3, Adele Samimi said that the family has been denied
information about the 74-year-old journalist's whereabouts or his
condition. She expressed concern about her father's health, saying he
suffers from a heart condition. The family still doesn't know which
prosecution branch is handling his case, she added... <It has been 14
days since the arrest of Keyvan Samimi, and we still have no news about
my father. They didn't even give him a phone to call and didn’t inform
us of his location. If he hasn't been kidnapped, what do you call what’s
happened to him?> she asked. Samimi was arrested in Tehran on April 20
and taken to an undisclosed location, three months after his release
from prison following two years of incarceration. The journalist was
scheduled to address on April 21 a virtual panel discussion called
<Dialogue to Save Iran,> which was organized by a group of Iranian
journalists and university professors. A former editor of the now-banned
intellectual magazine Iran-e Farda (Iran Tomorrow), Samimi has been
imprisoned several times, before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
He was detained in December 2020 to serve a three-year sentence and was
released in January this year. In February 2022, Samimi was
provisionally released from prison due to health issues but was
re-incarcerated in May. According to the Committee to Protect
Journalists, Iranian authorities have arrested at least 95 other
journalists since anti-government protests erupted across the country
following the death in police custody of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa
Amini.>>

<<Jailed Iranian Female Journalists Win Top UN Prize
Three imprisoned Iranian female journalists have been awarded UNESCO's
Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize <for their commitment to truth
and accountability.> The winners of the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World
Press Freedom Prize include Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who
have been incarcerated for seven months for covering the events
surrounding Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody. Amini's September
2022 death sparked months-long protests across Iran demanding
fundamental economic, social and political changes. The third winner is
Narges Mohammadi, who has worked for years as a journalist and has long
been a vocal critic of the repressive government policies and human
rights violations in Iran. She is serving a long-term prison sentence.
<We are committed to honoring the brave work of Iranian female
journalists whose reporting led to a historical women-led revolution,>
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said. <They paid a hefty price
for their commitment to report on and convey the truth. And for that, we
are committed to honoring them and ensuring their voices will continue
to echo worldwide until they are safe and free.> In late April, Iran's
judiciary announced that Hamedi, a reporter for the Tehran-based Shargh
Daily, and Mohammadi of the daily newspaper Hammihan had been indicted
on charges of <collaborating with the hostile American government,
colluding against national security and engaging in propaganda activity>
against the regime. Mohammadi has been repeatedly detained and
imprisoned by the authorities, and she is currently serving a 16-year
prison sentence in Tehran's Evin Prison. In a statement read out by her
husband Taghi Rahmani in a video clip posted on her Instagram account,
Mohammadi reiterated that she would not participate in any court
proceedings, saying she does not recognize the <authoritarian, religious
and misogynistic regime> in Iran. <The violent suppression of
journalists, members of the press, human rights defenders and
universities, as well as the suppression of civil society and its
institutions…have put freedom of expression in Iran at risk,> she added.
....
According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, at
least 95 journalists were arrested since the eruption of the
anti-government protests.>>

<<Reporting in Iran could get you jailed. This outlet is doing it
anyway.
As protests shake up Iran, the digital news outlet Iran Wire is
providing critical insight into the revolt
Last month, Aida Ghajar saw a tweet saying a girl had been beaten by
Iranian police and was hospitalized. The woman had no name, and there
was no confirmation it actually happened. Ghajar, a reporter for the
scrappy digital news outlet IranWire, reached out along with her editor
to the outlet’s wide network of sources, and one was able to get into
the hospital and confirm the news. That source also sent back the phone
number of the girl’s brother. When Ghajar got on the phone with him, he
implored them to tell his sister’s story. He also provided her name:
Mahsa Amini.
Ghajar's Persian language story went on IranWire Sept. 14. It was
translated into English the next day. On Sept. 16, a journalist from a
separate news organization broke the story that Amini had died.
<We were the first to mention the name of Mahsa,> Ghajar said in an
interview. <And now, everywhere, every country they know about Mahsa.>

<<Message from detained journalists: Defend journalism
News Center- Just after the detention operation against more than 100
people as part of an investigation launched in Amed (Diyarbakır),
another operation was launched against opposition figures on April 29,
2023 as part of an investigation launched in Ankara. 15 people, who were
taken into custody in several cities on April 29, were brought to
Ankara. Dicle Fırat Journalists' Association Co-chair Dicle Muftuoglu,
Mesopotamia Agency (MA) editor Sedat Yılmaz and his wife Selma Yılmaz
were detained in Amed while Sedat Yılmaz's sister Filiz Yılmaz were
detained in Istanbul. The journalists sent a message calling for the
defense of journalism through their lawyers.
'We call for the defense of journalism'
<As the continuation of a tradition of more than 30 years, there is an
attempt to silence us. Just two days ago, five journalists were arrested
in an operation launched in Diyarbakır. Despite those who have been
trying to criminalize us with similar operations for years, our search
for the truth continues. No obstacle can darken the truth. We call on
all my colleagues to defend journalism against such operations,> said
Dicle Muftuoglu in her message.
'Nothing can silence our pen'
The message of Sedat Yılmaz, who calls for solidarity, is as follows:
<Dear colleagues and friends, I am very strong and cheerful. Nothing can
make us bow down to the mafia, to the drug lords and silence our pen.
What I expect from you is to strengthen the solidarity. I saw my
colleague Dicle Muftuoglu, she sent her greeting to you. Me, my wife, my
sister are in custody. We had to leave our 13-year-old daughter to our
relatives in Diyarbakır. Greetings and love.> >>

<<Iranian Judiciary Indicts Detained Journalists and Summons Others
Recently, the Iranian Judiciary has taken drastic measures against
journalists and citizens. Two detained journalists have been indicted,
while other journalists, teachers, and citizens have been summoned for
questioning. This wave of arrests and torture has been ongoing. Even
those previously released under the guise of <amnesty> in February are
now being summoned and imprisoned again. The arrest and detention of
journalists and activists in Iran is a grave violation of human rights
and freedom of expression. The international community must condemn
these actions and pressure the Iranian regime to respect the fundamental
rights of its citizens.
Indictments for two detained journalists, Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh
Mohammadi
According to the Judiciary spokesperson, Massoud Setayeshi, the
Judiciary has indicted two detained journalists, Elaheh Mohammadi, and
Niloufar Hamedi. Setayeshi stated that the indictments were issued on
April 17, 2023, and their case has been referred to Branch 15 of the
Revolutionary Court of Tehran. Setayeshi elaborated on the charges
against the two detained journalists, accusing them of <collaborating
with hostile governments, participating in a collusion against national
security, and engaging in propaganda against the state.> Niloufar Hamedi,
a photojournalist for Shargh newspaper, took and published the first
photo of Mahsa Amini in a coma at the hospital. Elaheh Mohammadi, a
journalist for Ham-Mihan newspaper, published a report on Mahsa's
funeral and an interview with her father. Niloufar Hamedi was arrested
by security forces at her home on September 22, 2022, and was
transferred to Evin prison. In late December 2022, she was transferred
to Qarchak prison in Varamin.
Elaheh Mohammadi was arrested by security forces in Tehran on September
23, 2022, and was transferred to Qarchak prison in Varamin.
Three journalists summoned for the final defense
Saeedeh Shafiei, Mehrnoush Zarei Hanzaki, and Nasim Sultan Beigi have
been summoned to present their final defense before the Evin Court in
Tehran. They are all journalists. According to separate notifications
sent to these journalists on April 4, 2023, they have been given a
five-day deadline to appear at the Evin Court for their final defense.
They have been accused of <propaganda against the state.> >>
