<<Iranian Judiciary Indicts Detained Journalists and Summons
Others
Recently, the Iranian Judiciary has taken drastic measures
against journalists and citizens. Two detained journalists have been
indicted, while other journalists, teachers, and citizens have been
summoned for questioning. This wave of arrests and torture has been
ongoing. Even those previously released under the guise of <amnesty> in
February are now being summoned and imprisoned again. The arrest and
detention of journalists and activists in Iran is a grave violation of
human rights and freedom of expression. The international community must
condemn these actions and pressure the Iranian regime to respect the
fundamental rights of its citizens.
Indictments for two detained journalists, Niloufar Hamedi and
Elaheh Mohammadi
According to the Judiciary spokesperson, Massoud Setayeshi, the
Judiciary has indicted two detained journalists, Elaheh Mohammadi, and
Niloufar Hamedi. Setayeshi stated that the indictments were issued on
April 17, 2023, and their case has been referred to Branch 15 of the
Revolutionary Court of Tehran. Setayeshi elaborated on the charges
against the two detained journalists, accusing them of <collaborating
with hostile governments, participating in a collusion against national
security, and engaging in propaganda against the state.> Niloufar Hamedi,
a photojournalist for Shargh newspaper, took and published the first
photo of Mahsa Amini in a coma at the hospital. Elaheh Mohammadi, a
journalist for Ham-Mihan newspaper, published a report on Mahsa's
funeral and an interview with her father. Niloufar Hamedi was arrested
by security forces at her home on September 22, 2022, and was
transferred to Evin prison. In late December 2022, she was transferred
to Qarchak prison in Varamin.
Elaheh Mohammadi was arrested by security forces in Tehran on
September 23, 2022, and was transferred to Qarchak prison in Varamin.
Three journalists summoned for the final defense
Saeedeh Shafiei, Mehrnoush Zarei Hanzaki, and Nasim Sultan Beigi
have been summoned to present their final defense before the Evin Court
in Tehran. They are all journalists. According to separate notifications
sent to these journalists on April 4, 2023, they have been given a
five-day deadline to appear at the Evin Court for their final defense.
They have been accused of <propaganda against the state.> >>

<<Iranian Journalist Detained, Rights Activists Charged amid Clampdown
on Dissent
Iranian authorities have detained a prominent journalist accused of
communicating with groups outside Iran and issued an indictment against
four teachers' rights activists, amid a crackdown on the media and civil
and political activism. Journalist Keyvan Samimi was arrested for
holding meetings with a <deviant sect supported by the Zionist regime,>
state TV reported on April 20, in reference to the Islamic Republic's
arch-foe Israel. Samimi's arrest comes before he was set to address the
virtual conference <Dialogue to Save Iran,> which is scheduled to take
place on the Clubhouse app on April 21-22. Also on April 20, sources
told IranWire that the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in
the north-western city of Marivan, in Kurdistan province, indicted four
members of the Teachers' Union. They are accused of <propaganda activity
against the regime,> <participation in illegal gatherings> and
<preparation and publication of images of illegal gatherings on channels
opposed to the regime.> The activists, Tahsin Mustafa, Aram Qaderi,
Sivan Suleimani and Aram Mohammadi, have been summoned and arrested
multiple times in the past for engaging in peaceful union activities.
The Islamic Republic faces one of the biggest threats since the 1979
revolution from widespread protests sparked by the September 2022 death
of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody. She had been detained
for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly. The authorities have
cracked down hard on the women-led protest movement, killing more than
520 people and unlawfully detaining over 20,000 others, activists say.
Following biased trials, the judiciary handed down stiff sentences,
including the death penalty, to protesters. According to the Committee
to Protect Journalists, at least 95 journalists have been arrested since
the eruption of the protests.>>

<<Iranian Journalist Seif-Ali <Arbitrarily> Re-Arrested
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is calling on Iranian
authorities to immediately release journalist Saeed Seif-Ali and drop
any charges against him. <Authorities must let members of the press do
their work without fear that they will be subject to arbitrary arrest
and detention,> Sherif Mansour, the New York-based media freedom
watchdog's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said in a
statement on April 17.
News reports quoted the journalist's wife Asal Ismaeilzadeh as
saying that Seif-Ali, editor-in-chief of the state-run news website
Didbaniran.ir, was summoned to court on April 11 to meet with a judge
about a previous arrest. CPJ said it was unable to determine where he is
being held or whether any charges have been filed against him. Seif-Ali
was previously detained on January 7 and was released on bail after
eight days. According to CPJ, Iranian authorities have arrested at least
95 journalists since September 2022, when the death in morality-police
custody of a 22-year-old woman sparked nationwide protests.
Didbaniran.ir covered those protests and journalists' arrests at the
time>>

<<No Information about Iranian Journalist Mohammadi's Case,
Husband Says
The husband of jailed Iranian journalist Elahe Mohammadi has
expressed his frustration at the lack of information about his wife's
case and at the violations of her rights by the judiciary. <We met with
every official we could, wrote numerous letters, and spent hours and
days waiting outside Evin prison, the prosecutor's office and the
offices of relevant officials,> her husband Saeed Parsaei wrote on his
Instagram account April 16. <They made promises numerous times, but
despite many visits, neither has our lawyer been granted access to the
case nor have we received any answers or responses. We remain in the
same state of uncertainty as on the first day,> he added. Mohammadi, a
journalist for the Hammihan newspaper, was arrested in September 2022
for covering the events surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini in police
custody, which sparked an ongoing wave of nationwide protests against
the country's clerical establishment. In October, Iranian authorities
accused Mohammadi and another jailed journalist, Nilofar Hamedi, of
being spies for the United States and of being the <primary sources of
news for foreign media.> The two journalists face the death penalty if
charged and convicted of espionage. Dozens of journalists have been
detained across Iran since the middle of September. Some of them have
been released. Others have been summoned, threatened and had their
electronic equipment seized. Known for its harsh Internet censorship,
which includes banning thousands of websites, the Islamic Republic has
on a large scale shut down the internet for most Iranians in an effort
to prevent them from accessing and disseminating information online and
from communicating safely.>>

<<Iranian Journalists Arrested, Summoned in Media Crackdown
Iranian authorities have arrested journalist and women's rights
activist Jina Modaresgorji and summoned another reporter, Maryam
Vahidian, to a Revolutionary court amid a crackdown on the media and
freedom of expression. On April 10, Modaresgorji was <kidnapped by
unidentified agents who used violence during her arrest> in Sanandaj,
the capital of Kurdistan province, journalist Farzad Saifikaran wrote on
her Instagram account.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network said that Modaresgorji is
being held at the women's prison in Sanandaj Correctional Center. She had
been summoned several times by the Revolutionary Court of Sanandaj in
recent days. Modaresgorji was previously detained during anti-government
protests in Sanandaj on September 21. She was released on bail after
spending 40 days in custody and was presented with a new charge last
month while appearing in the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in
Sanandaj. Modaresgorji is accused of <acting against national security>
for allegedly setting up an illegal group and being a member of it, in
addition to her previous charge of <propaganda against the regime.> In
Tehran, Vahidian, a journalist who covers labor issues, was summoned to
appear in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court on April 15. Vahidian was
arrested on November 27 last year when security forces raided her home
in the capital and was remanded in custody for a month. She is accused
of <collusion and intending to disrupt national security.> The
developments come amid a brutal crackdown by the authorities on nearly
seven months of nationwide protests in which hundreds of people were
killed and thousands of others were illegally detained, including dozens
of journalists. Some of the journalists have been released, while others
have been summoned or threatened and had their electronic equipment
seized.>>
