<<4 actresses summoned to testify in Tehran
News Center- The nationwide protests that sparked in Iran and Rojhilat following
the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in custody have continued in their eighth month.
Since September, the Iranian regime has used many methods such as arrest,
detention, torture and poisoning to quell the protests.
Tehran prosecutor Ali Salehi announced that four Iranian actresses Katayoun
Riahi, Pantea Bahram, Afsaneh Bayegan, Fatemeh Motamed-Arya and Iranian actor
Reza Kianian were summoned to testify by the Tehran Prosecutor's Office for not
<behavior according to Islamic customs and values>.
He also threatened them to be arrested if they do not go to the prosecutor's
office within the legal deadline. Since the beginning of the nationwide
protests, numerous artists, actresses and actors have supported the protesters.
Many actresses have been detained or arrested for removing their hijab in public
spaces and posting their photos without hijab on social media platforms.>>

Enforcement of Forced Hijab Could be a <Tourist Attraction,> Iranian Minister
Says
Iran's minister of cultural heritage, tourism and handicrafts has suggested that
the authorities' crackdown on women without a mandatory headscarf in public
places could be a <tourist attraction.> In an interview with ILNA news agency on
May 3, Ezzatollah Zarghami dismissed the possibility that the brutal handling of
women without hijab could deter foreigners from visiting Iran. <Anything can be
a tourist attraction for a foreign tourist; they would even take pictures of
it,> Zarghami said. The minister also expressed satisfaction that foreign
tourists strictly adhere to the Islamic Republic's mandatory hijab rules. The
Iranian authorities have intensified their efforts to impose the compulsory
headscarf in recent weeks as more women flout the Islamic Republic's strict
dress code. All women in Iran must conceal their hair with a headscarf and wear
loose fitting trousers under their coats while in public. But a growing number
of women have appeared in public without hijab since 22-year-old Mahsa Amini
died in police custody in September, sparking nationwide protests demanding
fundamental economic, social and political changes. Amini had been arrested for
allegedly wearing a headscarf improperly. Some defiant women were arrested,
summoned by the authorities and faced legal cases, while hundreds of small
businesses, including cafes and restaurants, and shopping malls were shut down
in recent months for allegedly failing to enforce the country's hijab law on
their customers. The unrest has badly affected Iran's tourist industry. In
January, the head of the Iranian Tour Operators Association lamented that there
were <no reservations for European tourists.> <We don't have any reservations
for the spring, and it seems that international tourists have no plans to come
to Iran,> Ebrahim Porfaraj said.>>

<<IranWire Exclusive: Faezeh Hashemi on her Incarceration, Protests and the
Opposition
....
She believes that the government must fundamentally change its view of hijab:
<When I was at Evin’s Ward 209 I had more opportunity to study and review Quran
and Nahj al-Balagha (a collection of sermons, letters, and sayings attributed to
Ali, the first Shia imam). It is interesting that there are only four verses in
Quran about hijab. The first verse advises men to put hijab over their own eyes.
The second verse refers to religious women and the third to the prophet's wives.
The fourth verse is about women at certain ages who do not need hijab. In some
other verses, we are promised hell or heaven for what we do. Nowhere in Quran it
says that you go to hell if you don't wear hijab or to paradise if you do. Quran
promises hell for other things like deceit, lying, sowing discord, injustice,
murder and violating people's rights. In parts of this government, all these
things are happening systematically or by individuals. We ignore all these
wrongdoings except when it comes to hijab. Grafting hijab into the identity of
the regime was wrong to start with and it is one of the issues that must be
seriously dealt with.> >>

<<Woman Dies in Violent Altercation Over Hijab Rule in Iran
Family Denied Access to Body, Judiciary Arrests Uninvolved Citizens Instead of
Actual Assailants in Fatal Altercation
A female tourist in Shazdeh Mahan garden in Kerman, Iran, lost her life during a
brawl over observation of the Hijab rule. The victim, Kolsum Oftadehpour, was 59
years old and the mother of five daughters and five sons. She had undergone
open-heart surgery. Basij agents were involved in the altercation, and the
situation quickly escalated, with people throwing stones at the agents' bus.
According to the state-run media, the Basij agents had warned some visitors
about the mandatory hijab rule before the clash occurred. However, the family of
Oftadehpour has provided new information that has shed light on the incident. A
member of her family said that a group of Basij agents who had returned from
visiting the grave of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the terrorist Quds
Force who was killed in 2020, harassed and offended them. These Basij agents had
warned Oftadehpour's family to observe hijab and used vulgar language, which led
to the altercation. The family member explained, <These 'promoters of the
virtue' intended to force us into the bus and call the police or the IRGC forces
to come and give us a lesson....We don't know who hit our mother that she fell
on the ground. There was a doctor there who said that she was not breathing
anymore.> Furthermore, the regime's security forces buried Kolsum Oftadehpour's
body without her family's permission and did not allow them to see it before the
burial. There is a lot of pressure on the family to keep silent, and a family
member has been summoned. The family has filed an official complaint against
certain people, but the judicial authorities have arrested two other citizens
instead of the <pilgrims of Qassem Soleimani,> who were among the attackers. The
court registered the names of two other people as defendants, <Hamid Jafari> and
<Mehdi Rezvani,> instead of arresting the main attackers on the bus. One of the
accused is in prison, and the other has been released on bail of five hundred
million tomans. The family claims these two people <were not involved in a
conflict at all.> This incident highlights the ongoing issues with the mandatory
hijab rule in Iran and the use of force to impose it. The authorities handling
of the situation and the arrest of unrelated citizens instead of the actual
attackers have caused outrage and disbelief among the victim's family and the
public.>>

<<Female protester in Eastern Kurdistan: We have nothing to lose!
Sanandaj- While the <Jin, Jiyan, Azadi> protests have continued in the cities of
Iran and Eastern Kurdistan, also known as Rojhilat, for eight months, the
Iranian authorities have used all kinds of repression to quell the protests.
Being at the frontline of protests, women remove their hijab as a resistance
against patriarchal laws and oppression. Although women, who remove their hijab
in public spaces, have received threats, they do not take a step back from their
struggle against the patriarchal mentality.
'Women should wear whatever they want'
B.N. is a woman joining the <Jin, Jiyan, Azadi> protests in Eastern Kurdistan.
She and a group of women leave a note reading, <We have nothing to lose> on the
windshield of cars belonging to women in order to call on women to resist the
mandatory law. <I drive without a hijab. I leave this note on the windshield of
cars belonging to women to tell them that they should not be afraid of driving
without a hijab. Women have the right to wear whatever they want. They should
wear whatever they want,> B.N. told NuJINHA.
'We will keep resisting'
B.M. asked us to keep her name confidential due to security reasons. She
believes that the uprising led by women in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan is the
uprising of women in the Middle East and the world. <Women have been oppressed
in the country for years, so we grew up by struggling. We've been fighting the
patriarchy since we became aware of our gender.> Speaking about the difference
between their mothers' struggle and their struggle, she said, <Each generation
of women has its own struggle. Our mothers struggled against the burdens imposed
on them. Resistance was part of their personality and they raised their
daughters to struggle against the patriarchal system. Our mothers struggled for
years for their daughters for the next generations to become more independent.
Thanks to the struggle of our mothers, women are now on the frontline of the
protests.>
'We must fight even if we are afraid'
Recalling Abdullah Ocalan's words saying, <A country can't be free unless the
women are free,> B.N. said, <Living in a society without discrimination is
important. We must fight even if we are afraid. Some do not leave their safe
houses but they lie to themselves. They should stop lying to themselves. We will
win or die; there is no other option for us.>>

their female members were summoned to testify and threatened and three shops
