in Italy
Courage Award presented to six brave and selfless women at the Italian
Parliament
On Thursday, May 11, 2023, a ceremony honoring six selfless and
courageous women was held in the Italian Parliament in the presence of
Fabio Rampelli, the Vice President of the Parliament. Ms. Antonella
Sennori, one of the European Women's Network directors, sponsored the
event. She began by introducing the six courageous women who had been
actively involved in political and social activities in Italy for years
and were recognized by this network as deserving of the Courage Award.
The European Women's Network has over ten years of experience in social,
cultural, and human rights activities. It is affiliated with the Forza
Italia party in Italy. This year, the network selected six women for the
award, four of whom are Italian, one is Ukrainian, and the other is Ms.

Unjust Expulsions and Arrests: Teachers' Struggle Amidst Clerical
Regime’s Crackdown
The clerical regime puts more pressure on teachers through arrests,
summonses, and expulsions. The Security Department and the
Administrative Violations Board of the Ministry of Education have
practically turned into the arms of security forces over the past year.
They have concentrated all their efforts on baseless file-making for
activist teachers to suppress their protests. The Coordinating Council
of Teachers' Associations announced that the Violations Board of the
Department of Education of Gilan Province had expelled Ms. Fariba Anami,
a brave and well-respected teacher in Anzali, upon an unjust and
oppressive order. Fariba Anami has been teaching in high schools in
Gilan and Anzali for over 25 years. She is one of the hundreds of
activist teachers who have solely pursued the realization of their
professional rights. Currently, at least 16 freedom-loving teachers are
imprisoned in various prisons. Among the charges against these teachers
are meeting with the families of those killed during recent protests and
sharing content in solidarity with the protests on social media. Ms.
Farzaneh Nazeranpour, a teacher residing in Tehran, is among the
imprisoned teachers. In mid-March, she was sentenced to ten months in
prison by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran on charges of
<propaganda against the state> and <disturbing public opinion.> After
the Revision Court upheld the sentence, she was transferred to Evin
Prison on May 2, 2023.
In addition to Farzaneh Nazeranpuor, two other female teachers named
Atekeh Rajabi and Fatemeh Tadrisi, were arrested and imprisoned on May
9, 2023. Atekeh Rajabi is currently on a hunger strike. Furthermore,
Ahvaz's Public and Revolutionary Court has indicted eleven teachers in
Khuzestan province. The defense attorney of these teachers has stated
that the charges against them include <membership in groups aimed at
undermining national security> and <propaganda activities against the
Islamic Republic system.> Kowkab Badaghi and Zahra Bakhtiyari, two
female teachers, are among the teachers in Khuzestan who have received
indictments.>>

<<Soraya Rostami Suffers Nervous Breakdown Due to Pressure at Workplace
Soraya Rostami, an employee at the Water Department in Kamyaran, has
been urgently admitted to the hospital due to nervous breakdown due to
severe psychological pressures exerted by the department's management
and the local government. Her health condition has reached a critical
state, causing great concern. Kamyaran is one of the cities of Iranian
Kurdistan in western Iran. On Saturday, May 13, Soraya Rostami, who
worked in the rural water and wastewater department of Kamyaran County,
was transferred to Sina Hospital in Kamyaran following the distressing
psychological pressures imposed by government authorities. An informed
source has revealed that Jamil Karbasi, the manager of the Water and
Wastewater Affairs in Kamyaran, and Salahuddin Zareii, the Deputy of
Urban Planning and Development in the county's governorate, directly
contributed to the implementation of security measures against Soraya
Rostami. These pressures were allegedly a consequence of the <political
activities of her family,> leading to the complete suspension of her
salary, wages, and monthly income by the administrative system.
Moreover, all employees within the department have been warned to sever
all ties with Mrs. Rostami. Currently, Soraya Rostami's condition
remains critical after being admitted to the hospital, raising serious
concerns about her well-being. Disturbing reports suggest similar
incidents of organized security measures and government interference
targeting civil activists, families of political activists, and even
employees in various cities across Kurdistan.>>

<<Evin Security Court Summons Lawyers, including 4 women
Eleven lawyers, including 4 women, are summoned to the Evin Security
Court. In recent days, the 7th branch of Evin Security Court has
summoned several lawyers, the names of 11 of whom have been obtained so
far. Among these 11 attorneys-at-law, four female lawyers stand out:
Mitra Izadifar, Marjan Esfahanian, Samin Cheraghi, and Sara Hamzezadeh.
The common factor among most of these lawyers is their involvement
during the protests and criticism of the adopted procedures. The cases
filed for the summoned attorneys-at-law date back to the year 2022. (The
state-run Sharq newspaper, May 12, 2023) Marjan Esfahanian is an
attorney-at-law and a member of the Central Bar Association. Samin
Cheraghi is an attorney-at-law, a member of the National Elite
Foundation, and a member of the Central Bar Association. According to a
recent notification received by her, she is required to appear before
the 7th branch of the Security Court (located in Evin Prison) on Monday,
May 21, 2023, to defend against charges leveled against her. Sara
Hamzezadeh is a lawyer and a member of the Semnan Bar Association. She
must appear before the 7th branch of the Security Court (located in Evin
Prison) on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, to defend against charges against
her. Ms. Hamzezadeh was apprehended by security forces at her workplace
in Shahroud in January 2023 and was released shortly after depositing
bail. The 5th branch of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office
in Shahroud was examining her case on charges of <propaganda against the
state.> Still, she said, <This case has been discontinued following the
amnesty circular.> >>

<<Economic Hardship Forces Iranians to Sell Organs
Around a week ago, two Iranian newspapers, Jahan-e Sanat and Etemad,
published reports saying that the collapse of the Iranian currency has
led to an increase in the sale of body parts in Iran and their purchase
by patients abroad. These reports received a lot of attention. The
Judiciary Media Center quickly accused the two papers of <publishing
unfounded material,> and Tehran's prosecutor summoned the publishers to
court to explain and present evidence for their articles. Following the
summons, both papers removed their reports from their websites and from
their social media accounts.
***
In a field report on May 4, the newspaper Jahan-e Sanat wrote that sale
of body parts has increased because Iranians have fallen into the
<valley of poverty.> It referred to an alleyway in Tehran that has been
known as the <kidney market> for years. Firoozgar Hospital, which
specializes in urology and kidney diseases, is located near that square.
In this alleyway, advertisements can now be seen in this alleyway for
liver, bone marrow and cornea transplants and for sperm and ovum
donations, according to the report. The report said that the price for a
kidney fluctuates between 500 million and one billion tomans, while the
Kidney Foundation of Iran has announced a price of 80 million tomans.
The actual price depends on how ill the recipient patient is, the blood
type and also on the middleman who arranges the deal between the seller
and the buyer. <Almost [all organ sellers] do this because of financial
problems. Selling body organs is not confined to a specific age group
and gender and most of them are between 18 and 40 years old,> the report
said. It also pointed out that the families of many patients inside Iran
cannot afford to buy these organs and are forced to sell their car or
their home to save the lives of their loved ones. The article said that
some of the middlemen send Iranians who need to sell their organs to
neighboring countries such as the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) or Turkey
where they can sell an organ for between $7,000 to $15,000. The report
published by the newspaper Etemad was similar, although it had a
catchier title: <Iraqis are in the market for buying Iranian kidneys in
dollars!> a clear reference to the reality of the lives of millions of
Iranians who face unsolvable financial problems because of the freefall
of the Iranian currency. The articles had been quoted extensively by
Persian-language media outlets outside Iran and on social media.
The Reports Are Removed but the Sale of Organs Continue
On May 5, while the newsrooms of Jahan-e Sanat and Etemad were preparing
their Saturday edition, the Judiciary Media Center accused these two
papers of <publishing unfounded material.> Within minutes after the
announcement by the judiciary’s media watchdog, the two articles were
removed from the newspapers' websites and social media accounts. As of
now, neither newspaper has given a reason for doing so.....>>
