<<'No oppression can extinguish the torch of Kurdish women's demand for freedom'
<No oppression can extinguish the torch of Kurdish women's demand for freedom,> said Latifa Ahmadi, Afghan political activist, condemning the assassination of Kurdish politician Firyal Sileman Xalid in Kirkuk on January 18.
Kabul- Kurdish political activist Firyal Sileman Xalid was assassinated in a targeted attack in Kirkuk on January 18, 2024. She was shot dead in the street outside a school in Kirkuk by two armed men. An investigation was launched into the incident by the security forces in Kirkuk. Since the assassination, many people from many countries, especially the Middle Eastern countries, have condemned the assassination. Latifa Ahmadi, Afghan political activist has released a message condemning the assassination of Kurdish politician Firyal Sileman Xalid. <I was shocked when I heard that Feryal Sileman Xalid had been killed. Unfortunately, the oppressive regimes in Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq take the lives of Kurdish fighters every day by labelling them as terrorists. Even though the people of Kurdistan have been targeted, murdered and assassinated, they never stop fighting; they are getting stronger and they struggle against oppression and tyranny. For about half a century, the brave people of Kurdistan have been fighting while they have been oppressed. But no oppression can extinguish the torch of Kurdish women's demand for freedom.``
'We are in solidarity'
In the message, Latifa Ahmadi pointed out that Afghan women were in solidarity with the Kurdish women. <As Afghan women, we share the same fate with the Kurdish women. Afghan women are always in solidarity with the Kurdish women. I believe that Kurdistan will be free and unified one day by overthrowing these oppressive systems. I hope the Kurdish Freedom Movement will achieve victory! I hope the Akhunds and Mullahs in Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Syria and other parts of the world will be defeated!> >>

Dastina Kobani
Jinha - 6 Feb 2024 - by SORGUL ŞEXO
<<'The fight against ISIS is not only the responsibility of YPJ/SDF'
YPJ commander Dastina Kobani, who leads the Operation Security and Humanity at al-Hol camp, pointed out the threat posed by ISIS and said, <The fight against ISIS is not only the responsibility of YPJ/SDF.>
Heseke (Hasakah)- Al-Hol camp is located in the Jazira Canton, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah. The camp hosts about 43,477 people from 45 countries. Most of them are the families of ISIS, which was defeated by the YPJ (Women's Defense Forces) and the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) in Deir ez-Zor in March 2019. The al-Hol camp is considered the most dangerous camp in the region and the whole world. The camp is controlled by the Internal Security Forces and the YPJ/SDF. On January 27, the General Command of Internal Security Forces in North and East Syria Region announced that they launched the third phase of Operation Humanity and Security against ISIS sleeper cells and the people supporting the activities of ISIS in the al-Hol camp with the support of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In an interview with NuJINHA, Destîna Kobane, one of the commanders of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ), commented the necessities and results of the third phase of the operation
'The operation was launched after getting information about possible new attacks'
At the beginning of her speech, Destina Kobane explained why they launched the third phase of the Operation Security and Humanity as follows: <We got information saying that ISIS sleeper cells were in preparation for a new attack to destroy the security in al-Hol camp. We launched the third phase of the operation to protect the people of the region. ISIS poses a threat not only to al-Hol camp but also to the region and the whole world.IS Although ISIS has been defeated geographically and militarily in North and East Syria, they are still active in al-Hol camp; they still carry out military training and the people, who want to flee from their extremist ideas are punished in different ways.>
'The results show the reason and necessity of the operation'
Destina Kobane drew attention to the operation that lasted for three days in the Muhajirat section of the camp and said: <We found weapons, mines, many other ammunition in tents and tunnels and seized and neutralized them. We also found grenades and arrested women, who want to revive ISIS. The members of the Ashbal al-Khalifa (Cubs of the Caliphate, ISIS's brigade of boys aged between 10 and 15), who were trained to carry out attacks, were also arrested. The tunnels used to hide the members of Ashbal al-Khalifa were discovered and destroyed by our forces. A lot of weapons, bullets, bombs and rockets were found in the Syrian and Iraqi sections of the camp. All these highlight the threat posed by ISIS in the region.>
'The threat continues'
Destina Kobane reported that the ISIS members had been planning to take revenge against the forces. <An ISIS leader, who wanted to blow himself up among the members of our forces, was arrested by the YPJ. The main targets were arrested and all the people in the camp were registered once again. While the third phase of the operation was launched, Turkish airstrikes targeted four members of the Internal Security forces. The operation was launched and ended with successful results. We want to say that ISIS still poses a threat to the whole world.>
'The fight against ISIS is not only the responsibility of YPJ/SDF'
Destina Kobane recalled the international community to fulfill their duties and responsibilities.<There are ISIS members from many countries in this camp, which means that this threat is posed not only to Syria and Iraq but also to the whole world. ISIS fought in many countries and many armies fled from them but the ones who fought against them and made an historical resistance are the members of the YPJ/SDF. As a result, all foreign ISIS members are held in this camp. People defending humanity and democracy should not accept this. Many international forces fought along with the YPJ/SDF to defeat ISIS. Now, they should not leave us alone in the fight against ISIS. The fight against ISIS is not only the responsibility of the YPJ/SDF but also all countries.>
'We vow to rescue all Yazidi women held captive by ISIS'
Destina Kobane emphasized that the aim of the third phase of the operation was to rescue Yazidi women held captive by ISIS in the camp. <Thousands of Yazidi women were abducted, raped and sold in slaves markets by ISIS. As the YPJ, we vow to rescue all Yazidi women held captive by ISIS. During the operation, we rescued a Yazidi woman. We will do our best to reunite her with her family.>
'The ongoing Turkish airstrikes strengthen the sleeper cells of ISIS'
Destina Kobane said that ISIS organized itself everywhere in North and East Syria. <There are sleeper cells of ISIS everywhere such as in Deir ez-Zor, Manbij and al-Hol camp. All countries should raise their voices to stop the ongoing Turkish airstrikes on North and East Syria and the Syrian airspace should be closed to Turkish warplanes and drones to protect civilians. The ongoing Turkish airstrikes strengthen the sleeper cells of ISIS.>
'The YPJ and SDF will continue to fight even if they don't fulfill their responsibility'
Destina Kobane concluded her speech saying, <The countries claim that they defend peace, democracy and security in the Middle East, but do not take any steps to ensure peace, democracy and security in the Middle East. The YPJ/ SDF always make sacrifices to protect the people. We call on all countries and states to fulfill their duties and responsibilities. The YPJ and SDF will continue to fight ISIS even if they do not fulfill their responsibility.> >>

<<'Our lives changed after being involved in the Kurdish Freedom Movement'
The lives of women in the village of Botana changed when the Kurdish Freedom Movement started its activities, said Bedia Mihemed Sileman. <Leader Ocalan sowed the seeds of freedom here and laid the foundation for today's revolution.>
Amûdê (Amuda)- Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan sowed the first seeds of the Kurdish Freedom Movement in North and East Syria, also known as Rojava, in the 1980s. Many women were involved in the movement by taking up arms. 67-year-old Bedia Mihemed Sileman, mother of Martyr Ali and sister of Martyr Xorşid, is one of them.
'We did not know anything about politics'
Bedia Mihemed Sileman did not know anything about politics until she learned the ideology and thoughts of Abdullah Ocalan. <We only applauded the parties related to Barzani's family because they were Kurdish parties. But we did not know anything about the purpose and strategy of those political parties and what they did for women's rights. Then, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was officially founded.> Bedia Mihemed Sileman told us that the lives of women in the village of Botana (Sinceqa xelîl), changed after being involved in the Kurdish Freedom Movement. <Kurdish women used to do only housework and childcare tasks. The seeds sown by leader Ocalan in Rojava Kurdistan grew in several years. The Kurdish people began to organize themselves against the oppressive regime. When our children joined the party, we, as mothers, followed them.> Bedia Mihemed Silemani pointed to the assimilation policies of the Baathist regime and said, <Kurdish language would disappear without leader Ocalan. Kurdish people used to speak Arabic because their native language was forbidden. Today, we can freely speak Kurdish language thanks to leader Ocalan.>
'Leader Ocalan sowed the seeds of freedom'
During the rule of the Baathist regime, women in the village of Botana used to secretly gather in houses to hold meetings and teach Kurdish. <Our village was a small village but there was unity. People of all ages were involved in the movement. Leader Ocalan sowed the seeds of freedom here and laid the foundation for today's revolution.>
'The physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan will be a solution to all crises'
Mentioning the international conspiracy against Abdullah Ocalan 25 years ago, she said, <Leader Apo is not a person being held behind bars. He raised awareness among women. When the international conspiracy was carried out against him, Kurdish people flocked to the streets to protest.>
Bedia Mihemed Sileman emphasized that the physical freedom of Abdullah Ocalan would be a solution to all crises.
<He made great efforts not only for the Kurdish people but also for people all around the world. If leader Ocalan was free today, There would not be so many wars in Ukraine, Palestine and Kurdistan. Erdogan sees the release of leader Öcalan as a threat. All Kurdish people and people all around the world should struggle for his freedom. They should put pressure on the Turkish state so that leader Ocalan can see his lawyers and family members.> >>

Sıddıka Halo
Jinha - 6 Feb 2024 - by NORŞIN ABDI
<<'We must liberate women and girls from all kinds of reactionary ideologies'
<We must liberate women and girls from all kinds of reactionary ideologies by raising awareness against gender-based violence,> said Sıddıka Halo, member of the Center for Gender Research.
Kobane- The Center for Gender Research was established in the Euphrates Canton of North and East Syria on March 6, 2019 to ensure equality, justice and coexistence. The center carries out activities on many issues such as violence, polygamy, and child marriage. The center recently conducted a survey on the causes and forms of gender-based violence and the experiences of women. <The center conducts surveys, research and studies after determining the needs of society and women to eliminate the problems faced by women and girls.>
Violence against women continues
Speaking about the research of the center on violence against women, Sıddıka Halo said, <Following the 19 July Revolution in Rojava, known as women's revolution, many developments occurred in North and East Syria. Although there are few reports on gender-based violence in the region, we know that violence against women continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, democracy and peace. Our survey reveals that women still suffer from violence and violence against women leads to femicide.>
'Gender-based violence must end to build a free future'
The survey also reveals that women and girls are subjected to many forms of violence. <Women and girls are subjected to both physical and psychological violence by their husbands, fathers, brothers or male relatives. Violence first affects women and then society as a whole. Physical or psychological violence against women at home, at work and in public spaces has a negative effect on personality. If this culture of violence is maintained, it will affect the next generations. For this reason, gender-based violence must end to build a free future. We must liberate women and girls from all kinds of reactionary ideologies.>
Incidents of violence against women are documented
The survey also includes the ages of women and girls survivors of violence. <We held meetings with women and women told us their stories. We conducted our survey with the support of the Mala Jin (Women's House), the Sara Organization to Combat Violence against Women and the Women's Internal Security Forces. We can say that the patriarchal mindset, customs and traditions cause the spread of violence against women. We began to conduct the survey at the beginning of November. Our survey also includes the data showing how many women were subjected to sexual violence. The Health Committee provides medical support to women survivors of violence and documents incidents of violence against women.>
Awareness-raising activities
The center also carried out awareness-raising activities, seminars and forums. Sıddıka Halo concluded her speech saying, <According to the results of our surveys, research and studies, we can end gender-based violence not only in the Euphrates Region but also across North and East Syria. We still have a long way to go to end violence but we can change our society in two years. We can change our society by carrying out awareness-raising activities and emphasize the important role of women in society.> >>

<There were stones, holes, and garbage in front of and inside 72% of the polling stations and they were not suitable for people with disabilities. 4% of the polling stations were on the upper floor. Only 2% of the stations were designated for people with disabilities. 26 % of polling stations had doors that were not suitable for wheelchair users to enter the stations,> Bourawiya Al-Aqrabi told NuJINHA.
Persons with vision impairment faced difficulties in voting
Bourawiya Al-Aqrabi said that 48% of the polling centers did not have signs showing the way to the polling stations. <Persons vision impairment faced difficulties in voting due to the lack of the tactile braille signs. The people with disabilities chose to vote; however, they faced obstacles.>

Kovan Aidi Khourto

<<Rescued Yazidi woman: I hope that all abducted Yazidi women will be rescued from ISIS
Kovan Aidi Khourto, one of the Yazidi women abducted by ISIS in Shengal, has been rescued in al-Hol camp. <I hope that all abducted Yazidi women will be rescued from ISIS,> she said.
Hasakah- ISIS abducted thousands of Yazidi women in Shengal (Sinjar) in 2014. Kovan Aidi Khourto from Shengal's Hardan village was one of the abducted Yazidi women on August 3, 2014. The YPJ launched a special operation in al-Hol camp and rescued Kovan Aidi Khourto and her two children from ISIS in the al-Hol camp.
'They took me to Mosul'
<It was 17.000 when ISIS entered our village. We fled the village not to be caught by ISIS; however, ISIS members caught us. Then, they took us to a school. For nine days, we were held there but then they took girls and women to different places. They took me to Mosul. I do not know where they took my sister,> Kovan Aidi Khourto told NuJINHA.
'I was threatened with death because I did not keep silent'
After being held in Mosul for a while, Kovan Aidi Khourto was taken to the village of Tell Afar. <A member of ISIS bought me and raped me. I was threatened with death because I did not keep silent against what I faced. Then, I was sold to another ISIS member and sent to the city of Fallujah.>
In Fallujah, she was bought by Abu Jafar, Governor of Baghdad. <He also raped me. He tortured me because I resisted him. He threatened me with death if I kept resisting. After Abu Jafar was killed, a member of ISIS sold me to another ISIS member.>
Her life in al-Hol camp
Kovan Aidi Khourto was taken to al-Hol camp after being sold to another ISIS member. <ISIS female members both insulted and tortured me because I am a Yazidi woman. In the camp, Yazidi women were sold to ISIS members by ISIS members. We were raped many times. I have been held in al-Hol camp since 2019. I could not introduce myself because ISIS female members kill non-Muslim women and call Yazidi women as 'infidels'. I do not know where my family is now.>
'I am grateful to the YPJ'
Kovan Aidi Khourto told us that she could not express her happiness for being rescued from darkness, violence and torture. <When the fighters rescued me, I was in fear so I could not express my feelings. I hope to see my family members and want to learn what they have experienced so far. I am grateful to the YPJ for giving me an honorable life again. I hope that all abducted Yazidi women will be rescued from ISIS.> >>

<<CMFA empowers women entrepreneurs in Mauritania
The Mauritanian Women's Business Council (CMFA) has developed many projects for women to empower them in the labor force.
Mauritania- Mauritania is a country situated in Northwest Africa on the African continents. The Mauritanian Women's Business Council (CMFA) develops projects for women to promote gender equality in the labor force. The association has also launched a campaign to raise awareness about women’s participation in the labor force. In the country, women can work in certain sectors, but they do not receive equal pay for their work, like in all countries of the world.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Fatima Mint Al-Fil, the head of the CMFA, said, <The council was established in 2017 to train women on specific topics, help them design projects and provide financial support to them. When it was established, the council determined a strategy for 2017 and 2020 to support women working in various fields dominated by men such as agriculture, fishing, farming etc. In 2020, the council determined a 5-year strategy for 2020 and 2025. Thanks to the strategy of the council, women have proved their presence in all sectors in the country.>
'Women have not been empowered in the labor force'
Fatima Mint Al-Fil stated that they aim to promote women economic empowerment in the labor force. <Due to the reality of our society, women have not been empowered in the labor force; they could not participate in politics and social life. As the council, we aim to change the current situation. When we established the council. I was the only woman working in the food sector. I participated in many international conferences; however, I was the only woman participating in the conferences from my country while there were many women participating in the conferences from different countries. I thought that I should establish an organization to support women so that they can participate in international forums and conferences. Together with many women, we managed to establish our council. Now, the council promotes women's economic empowerment.>
'Women's economic empowerment must be prompted'
Fatima Mint Al-Fil received support from many young women to carry out activities of the council. <Now, the council has 1,700 women members. In Mauritania, women have organized themselves under the umbrella of the council despite all the obstacles. The council provides training courses for women. Women have the opportunity to prove their existence and skills in politics. The council has carried out many projects with the support of its partners in different sectors, including fishing, farming and agriculture.> In 2022, the Mauritanian presidency announced the formation of a new government of 25 ministers, including four women. <Although women face many obstacles in participating in politics, four women hold ministries now,> Fatima Mint Al-Fil said. <Now, women cannot hold decision-making positions in the municipality of Ksar. Women need strategies empowering them in economy and politics. Women’s economic empowerment must be promoted so that they can participate in politics. Unfortunately, women are paid less than men for the same job.> >>

Rojbin Şam
Jinha - 5 Feb 2024 - by SORGUL ŞEXO
<<'Our main aim is to rescue women'
Anti-Terrorist Units (YAT) fighter Rojbin Şam, who has participated in the third phase of the Operation Humanity and Security in al-Hol camp, says that their main aim is to rescue the Yazidi women, who were abducted by ISIS.
Heseke - The 19 July revolution started in Kobane became a source for many women to become heroes and leaders for their society and the Middle East. The journey of Rojbin Şam for the truth began when she left Damascus to join the Women's Revolution in North and East Syria. Rojbin Şam, being influenced by Rojbin Arab from Syria's capital Damascus, joined the ranks of the Women's Defense Units (Yekitiyen Parastina Jin, YPJ) as an Arab woman. She grew up by a mother embracing all religions and nationalities. Her mother is a Christian while her father is an Arab. Today, Rojbin Şam follows in the footsteps of Rojbin Arab, an Arab woman from Lebanon who joined the guerillas of freedom in 1993 and lost her life in 1997.
Rojbin Şam, who has participated in the third phase of the Operation Humanity and Security that has been going on in al-Hol camp against ISIS since January 27, spoke to our news agency. Women can do everything when they decide, they can join the other fighters by singing the song of freedom, Rojbin Şam said. <After the operation to liberate Raqqa ended, the women, who were rescued from ISIS, began to make efforts for freedom. That time, I decided to join the YPJ.>
'Women have changed'
Rojbin Şam thinks that women should benefit from Abdullah Ocalan's ideas and philosophy. <I saw the difference between the women, who stay at home, and today's woman, who read the thoughts of leader Abdullah Ocalan. Women in the Middle East or other parts of the world should not accept slavery. There is a big difference between today and yesterday. During the rule of the Baathist regime, the situation of women was very bad, but today, women work and fight. Women have changed.>
'Our main aim is to rescue Yazidi women'
Speaking about the third phase of the Operation Humanity and Security, she said, <The ideas of ISIS are still going on. Wearing black headscarves by women means that they still accept slavery, the brutal ideology of ISIS. The explosives we found and seized in the camp show that the women of ISIS were preparing for large-scale attacks.> Rojbin Şam draw attention to the genocide committed against the Yazidi community in Shengal on August 3, 2024. <Thousands of Yazidi women were abducted by ISIS. One of our main aims is to rescue the abducted Yazidi women. Our other aim is to rescue the women, who are threatened for refusing the ideas of ISIS. The aim of the operation is to create a safe environment for all women.>
Rojbin Şam concluded her speech by saying, <Women should refuse and fight the ideas of ISIS. They should support the operation to fight terrorism of ISIS and to rescue women from extremist ideas and defend our region from threats.> >>

Ilkay Aslan
Jinha - 5 Feb 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Alevis in Antakya expect nothing from government but demand their rights
<We expect nothing from the government but demand our rights,> said Alevi earthquake survivors in Antakya, stressing that they are subjected to discrimination and isolated by the government.
Antakya- Although one year has passed since the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes that struck February 6, 2023, quake survivors in Antakya still cannot access health services, clean water and shelter. Ilkay Yigit, one of the quake survivors in the district, told us that they were deprived of their rights because of their Alevi identity.
'We just hear the excavator sounds'
Ilkay Aslan lives with her mother in a container. <Although a year has passed, nothing has been done. We have been left alone, forgotten. We just hear the excavator sounds.> Our living conditions have been deteriorating in winter, Ilkay Aslan told NuJINHA. <We have no water or electricity. Everyone faces serious problems. We are left alone under the rubble.>
'We do not want spend a third winter outside'
All quake survivors do not want to spend another winter outside and demand their housing problem be solved. <After the earthquakes, we helped people. Volunteer teams pulled the dead bodies out of the rubble. We looked for tents for months but could not find any. We built a shelter by wrapping plastic around a covered patio. There were 30 people staying there. Then, we were given tents by volunteers from Bangladesh. While our own state did not give us a tent, we were given tents by another state. Now, I live in a container with my mother but inside the container is very cold. We struggle to survive without water and electricity.>
'Alevis have been subjected to discrimination for years'
Ilkay Aslan believes that they are left alone because they are Alevis. <We do not receive any help from anyone, except from volunteers. All we demand is a solution to our housing problem. Quake survivors face many problems, especially in winter. Alevis have been subjected to discrimination for years. We expect nothing from the government but demand our rights.> >>
