<<Commemorating the leading women of Ashraf slain on September 1, 2013
In memory of the leading women of Ashraf slain on September 1, 2013
The struggle by the Iranian opposition movement is being led by selfless
women who have sacrificed everything in their own lives to bring freedom
and democracy to their people in Iran. Over the years, these leading
women have become indispensable to the Iranian opposition in its
struggle for regime change and democracy. So, at every crucial juncture,
Iran's leading women are seen playing a crucial role in the movement.
One such watershed moment took place on September 1, 2013, in Ashraf.
Ashraf represented the spirit and symbol of the democratic struggle for
regime change in Iran. On September 1, 2013, as the Iranian regime was
preparing to sit at the negotiating table in Geneva over its nuclear
program, hitmen raided the unarmed, innocent, and legally protected
civilians at Camp Ashraf, the 30-year seat of the Iranian opposition,
the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), in Iraq. In this
great crime against humanity, Iraqi special forces and Iranian commandos
raided the camp at around 5 a.m. and machine-gunned the unarmed and
defenseless residents of Ashraf. The assassins got hold of 52 of the 100
remaining residents of Ashraf and killed them in cold blood. Some were
killed while their hands were tied behind their backs. Even the wounded
lying on the clinic beds were shot to death. Everyone was given a shot
in the head. A big crime against humanity by all standards. Thirteen
women led the group of 100 who remained in Ashraf according to a
quad-lateral agreement between Ashraf residents, the United States, the
United Nations, and the Iraqi government to protect residents'
properties after their relocation to Camp Liberty. All of them were
protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention and classified as
<persons of concern> who enjoyed <international protection> by the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and they had stayed in
the camp based on assurances given by the U.N., the U.S., and the Iraqi
government.
Six leading women were killed and another six were abducted and taken
hostage.
The Iranian regime sought to deal a shattering blow to its main
existential threat, the PMOI/MEK, prior to the negotiations in Geneva
where it had to give up its nuclear weapons program in exchange for the
lifting of crippling sanctions. So, the cowardly attack on defenseless
people in Ashraf was launched to overshadow the regime's weaknesses at a
crucial juncture. On the anniversary of this tragic massacre, let us
remember the great leading women who gave their lives as the price for
freedom. Let us pledge to never forget their sacrifice. We will not
forget or relent until we take the mullahs' religious tyranny and their
agents and mercenaries in Iraq to the courts to face justice.>>

<<Maryam Ameri Arrested During A Raid on Her Residence
Maryam Ameri, an Arab cultural activist, was arrested and detained by
security forces in Ahvaz during a raid on her residence, according to
recent reports. Her arrest took place amid a spree of arrests launched
by the regime on the eve of the anniversary of the uprising last year on
September 16, 2022. Ms. Ameri collected Arab stories, lullabies, and
songs from villages. There is no information available on the reason for
the arrest of Maryam Ameri and the charges against her. Maryam Ameri had
been previously arrested on December 10, 2020, in a similar manner when
intelligence forces raided her residence. She was temporarily released
on bail after a month of detention.>>

<<Dozens of Professors Dismissed in Two Years of Raisi's Rule
At least 52 professors have been terminated from Iranian universities
over the two years of Ebrahim Raisi's administration, local media
reported. A report by Etemad newspaper found that the majority of the
professors who were dismissed were from Azad, Tehran, Tehran Medical
Sciences, Allameh Tabatabaei, and Shahid Beheshti universities. Etemad's
investigation indicated that the dismissals were carried out on
political grounds, with the aim of silencing critical voices within the
academic community. The report also cited an anonymous source who said
that the purge of academic personnel from medical sciences universities
started a few weeks after the start of Raisi administration. The source
added that the move was aimed at recruiting graduates from the medical
community who aligned with the cabinet and the government. University
officials have denied that the dismissals were politically motivated,
but the Ministry of Interior's information center has obliquely
acknowledged political factors in this context.
The ministry's statement conveyed that the dismissal of professors by
the Ministry of Science is deemed a <revolutionary duty of this
ministry.> Last week, Etemad published a report that identified 157
university professors who were fired from their positions during the
administrations of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hassan Rouhani, and Ebrahim
Raisi. It was able to identify 85 professors who were fired during the
Ahmadinejad administration, 14 professors who were fired under Rouhani,
and 58 professors who were dismissed in just the two years of the Raisi
administration.
The Union of Iranian University Professors has condemned the dismissals.
The union warned that disrespecting the dignity of professors and
compromising university independence would inflict irreparable harm on
the country's academic institutions.>>

<<Swimmer Tackles 48.5km Manhattan Effort for Iranian Women and
Protesters
Raha Akhavan, an accomplished open water swimmer and university
professor, started a 10-hour swim around Manhattan Island this morning.
She is swimming in honor of Mahsa Amini and to support Iranian women and
protesters with eye injuries. Akhavan's goal is to swim the full 48.5
kilometers of the Manhattan coastline in 10 hours. She is accompanied by
a support boat and a guide from the New York Open Water Organization.
The US-born Akhavan embarked at 730am EST. Her swim will take her along
the East River, Harlem River and Hudson River, passing beneath 20
bridges linking Manhattan to Brooklyn, Queens and New Jersey. <I will be
thinking about all the people who have inspired me throughout the past
year. All the ones who lost their lives, all the ones who got injured,
all the ones who went to the street despite all the risks,> she said
before jumping into the water.
<I'm very happy that as a citizen I can do my social responsibility.
What I can do is to raise my voice. Raise the voice of the women of Iran
who are fighting for their basic right of living their free life,
wearing what they want to wear, having equal rights as men,> she added.
In an interview with IranWire last month, Akhavan described the
oppression she faced as a girl and a woman in Iran, and pays tribute to
the victims of the Islamic Republic's bloody crackdown on last year's
nationwide protests demanding more freedoms and women's rights,
particularly those who have lost their eyes in the violence. The epic 20
Bridges Swim is part of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, an
ultra-marathon swimming challenge that also includes a successful solo
completion of the Catalina Channel (between Santa Catalina Island and
the Southern California mainland) and the English Channel. Akhavan has
already swum the Catalina Channel and says she is also planning to take
on another challenge: swimming the English Channel in the near future.
As she began her training in the fall of 2022, Iran was rattled by
popular protests sparked by the September death in police custody of
22-year-old Mahsa Amini. <As [part of the] Iranian diaspora, and a woman
who grew up in Iran during the 80s and 90s I couldn't help but deeply
sympathise. I was taken to the same detention center [in Tehran] where
Mahsa Amini was beaten to death, several times,> she said.
Inspired by a poignant photo of three young women who had lost an eye
during the protests, Akhavan regained the strength to return to
training.
One of Raha Akhwan's most important goals is to collect financial
assistance for victims who have been blinded in one or both eyes by the
oppressors of the Islamic Republic. These donations will be given to the
non-profit organization Malteser in Mainz, Germany, to be used for their
medical and legal needs.>>

<<Iranian Protester Who Faced Three Death Sentences Dies in Prison
A young Iranian protester who had been sentenced to death has died in
prison, the judiciary has confirmed. The Islamic Republic's judiciary
has officially confirmed the news of Javad Rouhi's death, a protester
during the Women, Life, Freedom movement, who had been sentenced to
death and was incarcerated in northern Nowshahr prison. Human rights
sources had previously reported extensive accounts of severe physical
and psychological abuse during Rouhi's detention. The confirmation was
made through a statement issued by the Mizan News Agency, an outlet
associated with the judiciary. <According to the official statement from
Nowshahr prison's public relations office, Javad Rouhi, a detainee held
under a legal verdict, had a seizure at 345am on Thursday, August 31.
Following a medical emergency, he was urgently transferred to Shahid
Beheshti Hospital in Nowshahr,> Mizan reported. The lawyer representing
Rouhi, 35, has also confirmed the news.
But conflicting reports have emerged that challenge the official
narrative.
The 1500tasvir activist Telegram channel, which focuses on disseminating
human rights news and events linked to protests, said <Javad Rouhi, who
had been detained and sentenced to death during the protests of 2022,
was killed today within Nowshahr prison by the Islamic Republic,> the
activist channel has reported. IranWire cannot independently confirm
1500tasvir's account of Rouhi's death. Other sources have claimed that
Rouhi's death was due either to poisoning or suffocation. No further
details have been provided by the judiciary. Rouhi was accused of
<waging war against God,> <spreading corruption on earth> and <apostasy>
and had received three separate death sentences. But Iran's Supreme
Court intervened in June, nullifying all three death sentences and
subsequently referring the case to another court for reevaluation.
Despite the Sari Revolutionary Court's awareness of his deteriorating
condition, they made a controversial decision to deny Rouhi any release
on bail.>>

<<More Arrests of Alleged <Terrorists> Ahead of Mahsa Amini Anniversary
Iran's Ministry of Intelligence has announced the arrest of 14
individuals in various provinces across the country. The individuals are
accused of engaging in actions aimed at <instigating chaos and disorder>
ahead of the September 16 one-year anniversary of the death in police
custody Mahsa Amini. The official statement labels the detained
individuals as <terrorists> and asserts their affiliation with an
expansive <Zionist-terrorist network.> Furthermore, it claims that upon
their arrest, authorities uncovered and seized a cache of <43 potent
explosive devices.> In recent months, there have been a number of cases
in which ordinary citizens have been detained on similar charges.
However, in most cases, these allegations have been unsubstantiated and
the detainees have been released. In one such case, a group of rock
climbers were arrested in Shiraz during nationwide protests last year.
They were accused of orchestrating armed activities within Shiraz.
However, photographs disseminated through the media during their arrest
depicted equipment typical of climbing enthusiasts, rather than
weaponry. Ultimately, all those implicated in the case were granted
release on bail. The Ministry of Intelligence's statement comes just
days before the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death.>>

<<Twenty-Eight Protesters in Kurdish City Summoned to Court
Twenty-eight protesters from the Kurdish town of Abdanan, who were
previously arrested and had their cases marked as <closed,> have been
called to appear before judicial and security institutions on the eve of
the anniversary of their protest, a human rights organization has
reported. The report by Hengaw reveals that these 28 individuals were
summoned by Branch 1 of the Ilam Revolutionary Court. In the summonses
sent to them, they were provided with judicial rulings pertaining to the
Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The defendants include Ahmed Alizadeh, a
50-year-old teacher who had previously been sentenced to six years,
seven months, and 17 days in prison by Branch 1 of the Ilam
Revolutionary Court. The charge against him was <forming a group of more
than two people with the intention of disrupting national security and
propaganda activity> against the Islamic Republic. The sentence is now
likely to be enforced. The individuals are required to appear before the
court on September 10 - just days before the one-year milestone since
the beginnings of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The September 16,
2022 death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini sparked a wave
of nationwide anger. She had been arrested for allegedly wearing a hijab
improperly.>>

and has not been able to contact his family since his detention. Saeed
Khalili, Bilali's lawyer, told the Emtedad news website that Bilali's

<yet to establish any communication with them.> Reports indicate that
Bilali was arrested at his home in Tehran. During the arrest, security
forces also seized his personal belongings. Sources told IranWire that
Bilali's detention is connected to the recent arrest of Mehdi Yerrahi, a
protest singer. Bilali is a well-known student activist and has been

political secretary for the Islamic Association of Amir Kabir University
from 1999 to 2001. More recently, he has worked in IT. Bilali's

of Iran from 1979 to 1989 ordered a series of mass executions of
political prisoners on July 19, 1988. In five months, thousands of
