<<Crackdown on Hijab Violators: Hundreds of Vehicles Impounded in Iranian Province
Police in Iran's East Azerbaijan province say they have impounded 439 vehicles and initiated legal proceedings against a number of women accused of non-compliance with the Islamic Republic's mandatory headscarf laws. Provincial police commander Ali Mohammadi said on August 10 that women who disregard police warnings about hijab violations <will be referred to the judicial system.> He declined to provide the number of women facing legal cases. Mohammadi also said that restaurant and coffee shop owners are responsible for ensuring that their customers comply with hijab regulations and warned that those who fail to do so could face legal consequences. According to Saeed Montazer al-Mahdi, the police command spokesperson, a total of 991,176 SMSs were sent to vehicle owners across Iran between April 15 to June 15 warning them to abide by the compulsory hijab rules. As many as 2,000 vehicles were impounded during that period of time, he said. The intensifying crackdown on women flouting the Islamic Republic's strict dress code comes as parliament amended the government's Hijab and Chastity bill from 15 articles to 70. The proposed legislation, which would impose harsher penalties for hijab violations, has been met with widespread criticism from human rights groups.>>

Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric urged the country's Shia leadership to listen to the demands of the Iranian people and <respect> women and journalists, amid an intensifying crackdown on dissent, the media and women flouting the Islamic Republic’s mandatory hijab rules. <Respect and value women, reinstate them to their rightful place, and show due respect to the journalists who constitute one of the nation's most significant assets,> Molavi Abdulhamid, the outspoken Sunni Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, said in his sermon on August 11. <The strength of the government lies not in disregarding the people's voices but in actively heeding and listening to the people,> he added. Molavi has been a key dissenting voice inside Iran since the eruption of nationwide protests in September 2022, using his sermons to call for fundamental economic, social and political changes in the country.>>

<<17-year-old Sonia Sharifi kidnapped, tortured by Iranian government forces
News Center- The Iranian regime keeps using violence against supporters of the protests that sparked in Iran and Rojhilat following the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini by Iran's so-called <morality police>. Sonia Sharifi, a 17-year-old student from Abdanan, Ilam province, was tortured and abused by Iranian government forces after being kidnapped on August 9, 2023. After being threatened, interrogated, and tortured for more than two hours, Sonia Sharifi was left alone in one of the streets of Abdanan. She posted a picture of her injured forehead on her Instagram page. On November 19, 2022, Sonia Sharifi was arrested by Iranian government forces. She was temporarily released on bail from Ilam Central Prison on December 15, 2022, after a month in detention.>>

<<Tehran Authorities Plan to Virtualize Universities amid Fear of Renewed Protests
When a Tehran official said on August 10 that university classes might be held online for the first 10 days of the next academic year to reduce the traffic load in the capital, Iranians discerned another reason for the plan. Over the past weeks, officials of the Islamic Republic have warned against a resurgence of widespread protests around the anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death in police custody on September 16, which will coincide with the reopening of universities. Universities have been protest hotspots, with many students refusing to attend classes for weeks in defiance of the authorities' warnings. Amid a brutal state crackdown on dissent, the women-led protest movement appears to have waned in recent months, but resistance to forced hijab and gender segregation in universities remains strong. Universities - and schools - are set to reopen on September 23, and Mehdi Golshani, the director-general of Public Transport and Regional Affairs at Tehran Municipality, spoke about ongoing discussions about <making university activities online until October 2,> according to local media. <We are currently engaged in consultations and correspondence with experts in higher education to transition university activities to online formats during the first 10 days of the classes,> he also said.
A final decision has not been reached yet, the official added.
The announcement comes days after Mustafa Rostami, the head representative of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in universities, warned on July 21 that university campuses could serve as catalysts for renewed protests. Reports have emerged in recent weeks of university students and professors being banned and suspended by the authorities ahead of Amini's death anniversary and the reopening of academic institutions. The Ministry of Intelligence is reportedly summoning students via telephone to provide written commitments to refrain from participating in protests in the future. <The intent behind these measures is to deter student protests and instill a sense of fear among the student community,> the Council of Student Unions said in a recent report. Nearly 800 students have been arrested since the eruption of the <Woman, Life, Freedom> protest movement, activists say. Many have faced sentences including imprisonment and flogging, while others have been expelled from universities or suspended from their studies. Dozens of professors have been sacked from their academic posts for supporting student protests.>>

<<10-Year Prison Terms Upheld for Two Iranian Baha'is
The Court of Appeals of Tehran province has upheld the initial sentences of 10 years in prison for 70-year-old Mahvash Sabet (Shahriari) and Fariba Kamalabadi, two members of Iran’s Baha'i religious minority. Sabet and Kamalabadi spent 10 years of their lives in prison, from 2008 to 2017, solely based on her religious beliefs. They have been held in Tehran's Evin prison since their latest arrest in July 2022. In November, the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced them to another 10 years in prison each on security charges, after a one-hour trial during which the judge spent most of the time insulting the defendants for managing the Baha'i community in Iran. They were also ordered to surrender their mobile devices and laptops and prohibited from residing in Tehran, leaving the country, and participating in social or political organizations for a period of two years. Sabet and Kamalabadi are two former members of the <Yaran> (<Friends>) of Iran, the informal Baha'i leadership group that for almost 20 years looked after the Iranian Baha'i community. The Iranian government has intensified its crackdown on Baha'is, arresting and imprisoning dozens of them on spurious charges over the past few weeks.>>

<<Mashhad prison authorities refuse to grant Azam Gholami release on bail pending trial
Political prisoner Azam Gholami, 35, has languished in confinement for over 10 months, held in an uncertain state. Despite the passage of ten months behind bars, the situation of Azam Gholami remains unresolved, as she is held within the confines of Mashhad Central Prison without trial or access to legal representation. Azam Gholami's ordeal began when security forces apprehended her in front of her Qasem Abad residence in Mashhad during the height of the nationwide uprising and protests in October 2022. Her home was subjected to a search, and several personal possessions were confiscated. She was subsequently taken to the detention center of the Intelligence Department of Mashhad. Following a period of relentless interrogation that spanned more than two months, she was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence Ward within the Central Prison of Mashhad, also known as Vakil Abad Prison. After undergoing an interrogation session at Branch 904 and once the charge arraignment process was finalized, Azam Gholami was relocated to the women's ward of Vakilabad Prison. Her fundamental rights as a defendant have been systematically denied.
Political prisoner Azam Gholami faces allegations of affiliation and collaboration with the primary Iranian opposition force, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). These accusations were lodged within Branch 904 of the Mashhad Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office, overseen by investigator Mohsen Gol-Mohammadi. Regrettably, she has been denied access to legal counsel throughout this process. Despite her circumstances, prison authorities refuse to grant her release on bail pending trial. Born in 1988 and residing in Qasem Abad, Mashhad, Azam Gholami's plight underscores the challenging circumstances endured by political prisoners, as they grapple with uncertain and unjust conditions imposed upon them by the authorities.>>

The wife of Iranian football player Hossein Mahini, a vocal critic of the government, says security forces have raided their home in their absence.
Anis Mohmedi wrote on her Instagram account that the raid took place on August 8. The incident came after she was summoned to the prosecutor's office on charges of <creating, disseminating, and sharing explicit content> on social media. She has rejected the allegations. Mahini was detained for 10 days last year after protesting the September death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. He was released on bail. Iranian authorities have cracked down hard on dissent and the media since the eruption of nationwide protests sparked by Amini's death, with dozens of activists, journalists and lawyers being arrested in recent months.>>

The German domestic intelligence agency has warned critics of the Iranian leadership living in Germany about the threat of cyberespionage against them. Germany's Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) on August 10 warned Iranian dissidents that they might be targeted by the Charming Kitten online espionage group. Charming Kitten works by building trust with victims to the extent that they expose data on themselves and their online contacts in Iran, the BfV said. <<Gas-Rich Iran Hit Hard by Energy Crisis
Earlier this month, Iran's government invoked <unprecedented> summer heat when it ordered a two-day nationwide shutdown to protect public health and conserve energy amid temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The move came as the country, despite sitting on the world's second-largest natural gas reserves, faces acute shortages of electricity. The Tehran Electricity Distribution Company announced on August 9 it had been forced to <reduce the network load during peak hours> due to <rising air temperatures and increased electricity consumption.> The measure included disconnecting electricity supply to 50 high-consuming national and provincial organizations, he said. <Some homes have water tanks but, in a 50-degree heat, the water tanks can cause third-degree burns,> a resident of the south-western city of Ahvaz recently told IranWire. <We're talking about heat, water scarcity and power cuts, but our words often fall on deaf ears.To truly grasp our plight, one has to experience it firsthand.>
Water shortages - and protests over water scarcity - are becoming more commonplace across Iran, with poor water management, drought and corruption-ridden infrastructure projects contributing to the crisis. The water crisis is exacerbating the energy crisis, as many power plants in Iran rely on water for cooling. With water levels declining, these power plants are forced to shut down, which in turn reduces electricity supply. The electricity shortage is causing problems for businesses and the industry, with some factories being forced to shut down due to lack of power. Voice of America cited a witness from central Markazi province saying that <industrial units experience electricity cuts for two days a week> and agricultural wells face a daily power interruption from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while <households have been grappling with power outages.> Amid widespread reports of power cuts across Iran, energy-starved Pakistan has signaled its intent to buy more electricity from its neighbor. The Pakistani Finance Ministry made the announcement in a statement on August 8, a week after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Islamabad.>>

<<Isolated for 8 months, political prisoner Massoumeh Senobari faces intolerable conditions
Save Massoumeh Senobari, Save political prisoners in Iran
Political prisoner Massoumeh Senobari has been isolated in a cell in Fardis Prison of Karaj (aka Kachouii Prison) for about eight months. She is being detained in restricted conditions isolated from other inmates, and deprived of fresh air on the orders of the judge presiding over her case. A reliable source has reported that Massoumeh Sanobari deposited nearly one million Tomans into the prison account a few months ago to treat her arm. But despite paying for the expenses of her treatment, prison authorities prevent her from being sent to the hospital for the treatment of her injured arm.
Currently detained in solitary confinement in the women's ward, Massoumeh Senobari is isolated from fellow prisoners. The judge overseeing her case has imposed this restrictive measure on her. Furthermore, limitations are placed on her ability to contact her family, with authorities even preventing her from recharging her phone card. These infringements occur despite recognizing every prisoner's fundamental right to maintain communication with their family. Under the court's verdict, Massoumeh Senobari, a political prisoner, is prohibited from interacting with other inmates and confined within the walls of a <closed-door> prison. Her access to fresh air is limited to one hour every few days, during which other inmates are temporarily removed from the yard to prevent communication. Massoumeh Senobari is from Tabriz. She was arrested in Karaj on December 13, 2022, and transferred to the city's Department of Intelligence. After enduring 40 days of interrogation, she was transferred to the women's ward of Kachouii Prison on January 4, 2023. Massoumeh Senobari stands accused of leading protests, leading to her trial at the 1st Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj on March 5, 2023. The court sentenced her to a lengthy prison term of 7.5 years, citing charges of <participation in acts against the state through membership in the PMOI> and <propaganda against the state through participating in illegal gatherings, publicity campaigns, writing graffiti on walls, and distributing pictures of PMOI leaders.> It is important to note that Massoumeh Senobari's family remains unaware of her condition and expresses profound concern for her well-being. She is the daughter of Mohammad Ali, born in 1988 in Tabriz, and has a daughter of her own. Previously, she was sentenced to 8 years on charges of <propaganda against the state> and <insulting> the mullahs' supreme leader, leading to her imprisonment in the women’s ward of the Central Prison of Tabriz. Prior arrests and instances of severe mistreatment have marked Massoumeh Senobari's journey. On February 24, 2019, she was arrested and subjected to brutal torture during interrogation in the Intelligence Department of Tabriz. Her inhumane treatment left her unable to walk due to vicious whippings, resulting in broken bones and impaired vision. Despite the suffering, she was released on bail of 600 million tomans until her trial in August 2019. However, her ordeal continued as she was arrested again without warning on February 5, 2020, at her sister's house and subjected to further severe torture. In October 2020, she contracted the Covid-19 disease during the coronavirus outbreak at the Central Prison of Tabriz, exacerbating her precarious situation. Additionally, Massoumeh Senobari suffers from heart problems. Still, the authorities of Tabriz prison prevented her from receiving the necessary medication provided by her family. She was ultimately released from prison in 2021, having endured unimaginable hardships. The plight of Massoumeh Senobari serves as a poignant reminder of political prisoners' ongoing struggles and the urgent need for justice and human rights to prevail.>>

<<Canada Targets Senior Iranian Officials with New Sanctions
Canada has imposed sanctions on Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and six other Iranian individuals accused of involvement in activities <that gravely threaten international peace and security or that constitute gross and systemic violations of human rights in Iran.> <Today's sanctions send a clear message to the Iranian regime that Canada will not tolerate its gross and systematic violations of human rights and its ongoing grave breach of international peace and security. We will continue to use all the tools at our disposal to respond to Iran's egregious actions,> Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly said in a statement on August 8. The European Union, the United States, the UK, Canada and other countries have issued several rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic in recent months over its crackdown on anti-establishment protests and its supply of drones to Russia for its war effort in Ukraine. Canada has sanctioned a total of 170 Iranian individuals and 192 entities since October 2022. In 2012, it designated the Islamic Republic as a state supporter of terrorism. Those targeted in Canada's latest round of sanctions include senior officials <involved in entities that supply materials to Iran's repressive national Law Enforcement Command,> the statement reads. <The sanctions also target individuals who occupy senior positions in state-directed firms that produce lethal combat drones used by Iran's armed forces to destabilize the region or that are exported to Russia for use in its illegal war against Ukraine.>
Besides Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, the list of those sanctioned includes:
- Brigadier General Abdolkarim Bani Tarafi, chairman of the Iran Aviation Industry Organization of the Ministry of Defense;
- Fatemeh Haghshenas, chief executive officer of Imen Sanat Zaman Fara, which manufactures equipment for the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF);
- Masoumeh Teymouri, chief of the Board of Directors of Imen Sanat Zaman Fara;
- Reza Khaki, a member of the Board of Directors of Qods Aviation Industries, a state-own company that designs and manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles;
- Majid Reza Niyazi-Angili, a member of the Board of Directors of Qods Aviation Industries;
- Vali Arlanizadeh, member of the Board of Directors of Qods Aviation Industries.
The sanctions will effectively freeze any assets they may hold in Canada.
<Today's sanctions build on Canada's efforts to press the Iranian regime to address the legitimate grievances and interests of its citizens and impose costs for its destabilizing behaviour abroad,> the Canadian statement says. <Canada is committed to protecting global peace and security and will continue to stand with the Iranian people as they courageously defend their human rights.> >>

<<Alarm Raised over Fate of Jailed Iranian Writers, Blogger
Concerns are growing over the safety of two Iranian writers and a popular blogger who have been arrested by security forces amid a widening crackdown on freedom of expression and dissent. A group of Iranian cinema workers and artists issued a joint statement on social media saying that well-known actor and dramatist Mehdi Etemad Saeed has been unheard of for nearly two months. <We are uncertain about the specific charges that led to the arrest of Mehdi, a theater actor and children's facilitator, as well as the location of his detention. Additionally, it remains puzzling why, even after eight weeks, his colleagues and family are still in the dark about his current status.> Saeed was arrested in Tehran on June 9 in the presence of his wife and two-year-old child. No official explanation has been given for his detention. Over 200 Iranian poets, writers, artists and activists also signed a statement calling for the release of their colleague Habib Mousavi Bibalani. The poet, critic and writer was arrested on July 31 on charges of <propaganda against the system> and <causing unease in the public mind.> He is being held in Amir Aban prison in the northern city of Gorgan. His family is concerned about his health, as he suffers from a number of chronic conditions affecting his heart, lumbar discs, stomach and kidneys. <In 2023, when a political system....resembles past totalitarian regimes, impacting the lives of thinkers and creators of ideas without restraint, it pervades its existence,> the joint statement reads. <This system....continues until the final veil of obscurity shrouds them. <It becomes unavoidable to deduce that such a political system has severely dwindled its prospects of regaining lost legitimacy, rendering its future uncertain,> the statement adds. Meanwhile, Dadban, a group of volunteers who provide legal advice to activists and protesters, reported that the family of well-known blogger and satirist Shaker Bori has not received any information about him since his arrest on July 31. Security forces arrested Bori in the south-western city of Abadan on July 31 and took him to an undisclosed location. Dadban quoted the Abadan Intelligence Department as telling his family, <We lack any information concerning his status, therefore, we suggest filing a missing persons report.> Bori, who has over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, has criticized the government's policies through his thought-provoking videos.>>
