<<Iran releases top actress Alidoosti who was jailed for backing
protests
News Wires - Iran has released top Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti on
bail, state media reported on Wednesday, weeks after she was detained
for criticizing a crackdown on anti-government protests that have rocked
the Islamic Republic for months. Best-known for her role in <The
Salesman>, which won an Academy Award in 2017, the pro-reform artist
Alidoosti had supported the protests, including by pos-ting her picture
on Instagram in November without the compulsory hijab head covering, and
holding up a sign which read <Woman, Life, Freedom> in Kurdish, a
popular slogan in the mass protests. The semi-official ILNA news agency,
citing her lawyer, said <Alidoosti, who was arrested on December 17, was
released today on bail>, without giving further details. Her picture,
taken in front of Tehran's notorious Evin prison, was widely shared on
social media. >>

Opinion by Gino d'Artali: Remember the students protesting shouts
against bassijis when they forced themselves into a university: <Give in
or give way? The releasing of Alidoosti, and a few others before could
be a sign that the judiciary has started to give way.

<<News Wires - Iran warned France on Wednesday it would respond after <insulting>
cartoons depicting Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were
published in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
The weekly had published dozens of cartoons on the same day ridiculing
the highest religious and political figure in the Islamic republic. The
magazine said the cartoons were part of a competition it launched in
December in support of the protests triggered by the September 16 death
in custody of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurd who was arrested for
allegedly violating the country's strict dress code for women. <The
insulting and indecent act of a French publication in publishing
cartoons against the religious and political authority will not go
without an effective and decisive response,> tweeted Iran's Foreign
Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. <We will not allow the French
government to go beyond its bounds. They have definitely chosen the
wrong path>. The French magazine said the contest aimed <to support the
struggle of Iranians who are fighting for their freedom>. >>

arresting Baloch citizens. According to the reports, the members of
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) raided a sports field in
the Karimabad region of Zahedan and arrested at least 30 people. The
reports also say that 10 Baloch people were arrested by IRGC in the
Keshavarz street of Zahedan. For three months, many Baloch youths have
been forcibly arrested in Zahedan, city of Sistan and Baluchestan
Province. The pro-government news outlets reported the arrested citizens

<<NCRI Women's Committee calls to support women imprisoned in Iran. Call
for urgent action to save the lives of hunger-striking women in a Karaj
Priso. A number of brave women and girls arrested during the Iranian
people's nationwide uprising have started hunger strikes to protest
their prolonged detention, harassment, horrible prison conditions, bogus
charges leveled against them, and lack of attendance to their cases.
Elham Modarresi, Armita Abbasi, and other women detained in a Karaj
Prison were tortured and sexually assaulted by security forces before
being transferred to the prison.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS) and the
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have put pressure on many families of
detained protesters to keep quiet about their children's condition. They
falsely promised the families to expedite their children’s release if
they remained silent. The Women's Committee of the National Council of
Resistance of Iran urges all women and youths to actively support the
protesters detained during the uprising, especially women and girls. The
NCRI Women's Committee draws the attention of the UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation
in Iran, and especially the UN Fact-finding Mission to condemn the
clerical regi-me's treatment of female prisoners decisively. The NCRI
Women's Committee calls for urgent action to save the lives of women on
hunger strike in prison in Karaj.

<<Two Iranian teens face death penalty over protests: rights group
Paris (AFP) - Two Iranian teenagers face the death penalty after being
sentenced to be hanged over involvement in protests that have rocked the
Islamic republic for months, a rights group said Monday. Two men aged 23
have already been executed over the protests sparked by the death of
Mahsa Amini but campaigners fear dozens more risk being hanged as Iran
uses capital punishment as an intimidation tactic in a bid to quell the
protests.
Mehdi Mohammadifard, an 18-year-old protester, was sentenced to death on
charges of setting alight a traffic police kiosk in the wes-tern town of
Nowshahr in Mazandaran province, the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights (IHR)
group said. The death sentence was issued by a Revolutionary Court in
the provincial capital of Sari after convicting him of the capital
charges of <corruption on earth> and <enmity against God>, it added. The
double conviction means that he has been given two death sentences. IHR
director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam told AFP that based on available
information, Mohammadifard appeared to be the youngest person yet
sentenced to death over the protests. Meanwhile, the judiciary's Mizan
Online news website said that the death sentence of another protester,
Mohammad Boroghani, had been upheld in December by the supreme court on
charges of <enmity against God>. Boroghani is accused of <wounding a
security personnel with a knife with the intent of killing him and
sowing terror among citizens> as well as <setting ablaze the governor's
office in Pakdasht>, a city located 43 kilometres (27 miles) southeast
of the capital Tehran. According to IHR, he is aged 19. Mizan Online's
report came after some reports indicated the exe-cution had been
annulled. <The Islamic republic, which has not been able to control the
protests after 109 days, needs intimidation and execution to continue
its survival,> said Amiry-Moghaddam.>

<<Exiled Iran opposition figures predict 2023 'victory for nation' after
protests
A group of prominent exiled Iranian pro-opposition figures have issued
a coordinated message predicting 2023 will be a year of <victory> with
the regime shaken by protests. Those sending the message include leaders
from the fields of culture, human rights and sports. The Iranian
diaspora has long been seen as lacking unity, split into different
political factions and strategies for dealing with the Islamic republic,
that ousted the shah in 1979. But with protests still continuing in Iran
over 100 days after they were sparked by the death of young Iranian
Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, the message appears an attempt to find a
long-sought unity. <The year 2022 was a glorious year of solidarity for
Iranians of every belief, language and orientation,> it said. <With
organisation and solidarity, 2023 will be the year of victory for the
Iranian nation. The year of freedom and justice in Iran.> The message
was sent simultaneously on social media by a variety of figures, ranging
from the influential US-based dissident Masih Alinejad to the son of the
ousted shah, Reza Pahlavi, who also lives in the United States. The year
2022 was a glorious year of solidarity for Iranians of every belief,
language and orientation. With organization and solidarity, 2023 will be
the year of victory for the Iranian nation. The year of freedom and
justice in Iran.
....
<We are united to reach freedom,> Farahani wrote on her Instagram
account. <We will stand together and will not be silent>.>>

<<Two years in jail for Sepideh Salarvand, an anthropologist, writer,
and children’s rights activist. The Judiciary of the mullahs' regime and
its security institutions continue to file cases and issue prison
sentences and inhumane punishments for the protestors of the Iran
uprising. The Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Sepideh Salarvand, an
anthropologist, writer, and child rights activist, to two years of
imprisonment, two years of ban on leaving the country, a ban on
membership in social and political groups, and preparation of 80-page
research on issues of love for the homeland and condemnation of treason.
Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Iman
Afshari, issued the ruling and delivered it to Sepideh Salarvand. She
has been sentenced to two years in prison on the charge of <assembly and
