<<Iranian Lawyers under Threat after Defending Protesters' Rights
Prosecutors in Tehran's Evin prison summoned a number of human rights
lawyers in the past few days without saying which specific accusations
they are facing, Shargh newspaper reported on May 11. The newspaper
quoted an unidentified lawyer as saying that at least 20 lawyers were
summoned this week to appear before Branch 7 of Evin's Prosecutor's
Office. Most of them had protested the unlawful arrests of demonstrators
and the unfair sentences pronounced against them. Separately, lawyers
including Samin Cheraghi, Hassan Younisi, Ali Mojtahedzadeh, Ali
Sharifzadeh, Abolfazl Hamzeh, and Mohammad Ali Kamfirouzi announced they
had been summoned by the authorities in Evin. Several of them expressed
their frustration with the lack of information provided regarding the
accusations against them. According to Shargh, the summons relate to the
months-long protests that swept Iran over the September 2022 death of
22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. There has been no immediate
comment from the Iranian bar association or the judiciary.>>

<<Iranian Social Media Activist Sentenced to Six Years in Prison
The Iranian judiciary has sentenced social media activist Ramin Alinia
Tazehkand to a total of six years in prison, according to reports
received by IranWire, as the Islamic Republic is stepping up its
clampdown on dissent and the media. Branch 15 of the Tehran
Revolutionary Court sentenced Tazehkand to five years and one year in
prison on charges of <gathering and colluding to act against national
security> and <propaganda> against the regime for posting content
critical to the Islamic Republic on the Instagram page Gundam. According
to the Islamic Penal Code, Tazehkand will have to serve five years in
prison, the longest sentence. The activist was also banned form
traveling abroad, from joining political parties or groups and from
carrying out online activities for two years. He was arrested on

<<Jailed Iranian Teacher Launches Hunger Strike
An Iranian teacher who was arrested this week while on her way to
participate in a teachers' rally has gone on hunger strike to protest
her incarceration, the Coordinating Council of Teachers' Union said on
May 11. Ateke Rajabi was arrested on May 9 after leaving her home to
take part in a protest in the north-eastern city of Mashhad. Teachers
staged nationwide rallies on that day to protest the deteriorating state
of the educational system and the suppression of students, teachers and
parents. Rajabi was fired from her job last year after she refused to go
to class in September and published videos criticizing the government's
<unjust treatment> of students and teachers who are simply demanding
their rights be respected.
<You didn't fire me, I didn't agree to cooperate with you,> she wrote in
a note.
The Coordinating Council of Teachers' Union called on Iranian educators
to hold the demonstrations across Iran on May 9 and published a list of
demands, including providing high-quality education, security for
students following wave of poisonings in girls' schools and the
<unconditional release of all teachers' rights activists in detention.>
Unrest has rattled Iran since last summer in response to declining
living standards, wage arrears and a lack of welfare support.>>

<<Iranian Dissident Pop Singer Hossein Zaman Dies at 64
Hossein Zaman, a well-known Iranian pop singer who was banned for years
over his criticism of the Islamic Republic's policies, has died at the
age of 64. His son Abouzar made the announcement in a tweet on May 11,
months after the singer was hospitalized due to cancer-related
complications.<Dad is gone, he is gone forever,> he wrote. On the
evening of May 10, music reporter Bahman Babazadeh said Zaman was
transferred to an intensive care unit. His condition deteriorated after
his daughter Zeinab, a feminist activist, was arrested twice by security
forces in the past seven months. Zaman was a popular pop singer in the
90s. The authorities allowed him to return to the stage in 2018 after a
17-year ban to perform at the Tehran's Milad Tower Convention Center
with a 30-piece orchestra. Zaman's first album, titled Night of Missing
(1996), featured popular songs such as Brighter Than a Star, The Smell
of Loneliness, Bird, and Flower's Hatred. He released several other
albums in the following years.>>
