<<Gaza mediators urge Israel, Hamas to 'finalise' truce deal outlined by Biden
Qatari, Egyptian and US mediators called on Israel and Hamas Saturday to <finalise> the truce deal outlined by US President Joe Biden, as Israeli forces pounded Rafah in southern Gaza. Fighting has raged in the besieged Gaza Strip after US President Joe Biden said on Friday Israel was offering a new roadmap towards a full ceasefire. Shortly after Biden's announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted his country would pursue the war until it had achieved all its aims. He reiterated that position on Saturday, saying that <Israel's conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas's military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel>.
Hamas, meanwhile, said it <views positively> the Israeli plan laid out by Biden.
In a joint statement, Qatar, the United States and Egypt said that <as mediators in the ongoing discussions to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages and detainees>, they <call on both Hamas and Israel to finalise the agreement embodying the principles outlined by President Joe Biden>. In his first major address outlining a possible end to the nearly eight-month war, the US president said Israel's three-stage offer would begin with a six-week phase that would see Israeli forces withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza. It would also see the <release of a number of hostages> in exchange for <hundreds of Palestinian prisoners> held in Israeli jails. Israel and the Palestinians would then negotiate for a lasting ceasefire, with the truce to continue so long as talks are ongoing, Biden said.
<It's time for this war to end, for the day after to begin.>
Netanyahu offered 'safety net'
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called his counterparts from Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey on Friday to press the deal, and on Saturday spoke with the Qatari, Egyptian and Emirati foreign ministers.
UN chief Antonio Guterres <strongly hopes> the latest development <will lead to an agreement by the parties for lasting peace>, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
Netanyahu took issue with Biden's presentation of what was on the table, insisting that according to the <exact outline proposed by Israel>, the transition from one stage to the next was <conditional> and crafted to allow it to maintain its war aims.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said the government <cannot ignore Biden's important speech> and should accept the proposed deal, vowing to back Netanyahu if his far-right coalition partners quit over it. <I remind Netanyahu that he has our safety net for a hostage deal,> Lapid said Saturday on social media platform X.
Shortly after, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, leaders of the Israeli parliament's two extreme-right parties, said they would leave the government if it endorses the current truce proposal. Ben Gvir said on X his party would <dissolve the government>, while Smotrich said: <We demand the continuation of the war until Hamas is destroyed and all hostages return.> Smotrich added he opposes the return of displaced Gazans to the territory's north and the <wholesale release of terrorists> in a prisoner swap.
War cabinet member Benny Gantz, a centrist politician, had threatened to resign unless Netanyahu approves a post-war plan for Gaza by June 8.
Netanyahu has come under increasing domestic pressure over the fate of the remaining hostages and from a resurgent anti-government movement, with Israelis rallying again on Saturday near military headquarters in central Tel Aviv.
<Biden cares about our hostages more than Netanyahu does,> said a protester who gave her name only as Karen.
'Wiped off the map'
The Gaza war was sparked by Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,189 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Militants also took 252 hostages, 121 of whom remain in Gaza, including 37 the army says are dead.
Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 36,379 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
Israel sent tanks and troops into Rafah in early May, ignoring concerns over the safety of displaced Palestinian civilians sheltering in the city on the Egyptian border. On Saturday, residents reported tank fire in the Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood in west Rafah, while witnesses in the east and centre described intense shelling. There was also shelling and gunfire from the Israeli army in Gaza City, in the north of the territory, an AFP reporter said.
Before the Rafah offensive began, the United Nations said up to 1.4 million people were sheltering in the city. Since then, one million have fled the area, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, has said. The Israeli seizure of the Rafah crossing has further slowed sporadic deliveries of aid for Gaza's 2.4 million people and effectively shuttered the territory's main exit point. Egyptian state-linked Al-Qahera News said Cairo will host a meeting with Israeli and US officials on Sunday to discuss the reopening of the Rafah crossing. In northern Gaza, witnesses said that after carrying out a three-week operation in the town of Jabalia, troops had ordered residents of nearby Beit Hanun to evacuate ahead of an imminent assault.
The Israeli army said troops <completed their mission in eastern Jabalia and began preparation for continued operations in the Gaza Strip>.
Suad Abu Salah, 47, one of scores of displaced Palestinians who have returned to the ravaged north in recent days, told AFP that <Jabalia has been wiped off the map.>
Back in Jabalia after the Israeli offensive, she said: <We need a solution and an end to this war, so that we can live in peace.>

<<Israel pounds Gaza after Biden outlines comprehensive ceasefire plan
Israeli forces hammered Rafah in southern Gaza with tanks and artillery Saturday, hours after US President Joe Biden said Israel was offering a new roadmap towards a full ceasefire backed by France and Germany. While the Palestinian militant group Hamas described the proposal as <positive>, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu underlined that any permanent ceasefire in Gaza rested upon <the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities>.
Summary:
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Saturday insisted on Hamas's destruction as part of the Israeli plan presented by US President Joe Biden to end the Gaza war. <Israel's conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas's military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel ... Israel will continue to insist these conditions are met before a permanent ceasefire is put in place.> Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid vowed Saturday to support Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu if he goes ahead with the truce and hostage release deal outlined by US President Joe Biden. Two of Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, threatened to quit his government if he goes ahead with the deal. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Saturday he was <thrilled> to accept an invitation to address the US Congress, where he plans to <present the truth> about the Gaza war. Egypt will host Israeli and US officials on Sunday to discuss the reopening of the Rafah crossing, a vital conduit for aid into the besieged Gaza Strip, Egyptian state-linked media said on Saturday.
At least 36,379 Palestinians have been killed and 82,407 wounded in Israel's war in Gaza, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Some 1,170 people were killed in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks and 250 people were taken hostage, according to Israeli figures, with 132 still missing.
Yesterday's key developments:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sought Friday to press Hamas to accept a new Gaza ceasefire plan in talks with the top diplomats of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey via telephone calls from his plane as he returned from a NATO meeting in Prague, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

Sky News - June 1, 2024
<<Israel-Gaza latest: Hamas responds to ceasefire proposal - as Netanyahu casts doubt on deal
Joe Biden last night announced a surprise plan with three phases: the first would be a six-week ceasefire, the second the return of remaining hostages, and the third a reconstruction plan for Gaza.
Egypt making 'intensive efforts' to resume negotiations - report
A high-level official has said Egypt is undertaking <intensive efforts> to <resume negotiations> for a ceasefire and hostage deal, according to a report. The official, quoted by Al-Qahera TV, said this was <in light of the recent American proposition>.
Last night, Joe Biden detailed a ceasefire and hostage deal proposal that he said Israel had put to Hamas. However, Israeli officials have told our correspondents they were <blindsided> by the announcement.
Analysis: Joe Biden taking big gamble - but it's the best chance yet at ending Israel-Hamas war. If it works, then this will be a smart and cunning diplomatic move. If it doesn't then President Joe Biden will look foolish. He knows the huge risk of once again being taken for a ride by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Few knew that he was due to make this announcement.

More than 30 Palestinian Red Crescent Society employees killed
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said 33 of its employees have been killed in Gaza since the war began. Of those, it said 19 were killed <while performing their humanitarian duties>. The organisation today buried Mohammed Jihad Abed, an employee in the disaster risk management department. He was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in Rafah last night.
Talks to discuss reopening Rafah crossing - report
American, Egyptian and Israeli officials will be meeting tomorrow in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing, according to a report.
Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera TV.
Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing last month during its offensive in the city of Rafah.
Earlier this week, a member of Egypt's security forces was killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah crossing. An Egyptian soldier stationed on a watchtower had reacted to seeing an armoured vehicle carrying Israeli troops cross a boundary line near the border while the soldiers pursued and killed several Palestinians, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters news agency. The soldier opened fire and Israeli forces fired back, killing him, the sources said, sparking an exchange of gunfire between the two sides.
Sunak says proposed ceasefire deal is 'welcome news'. The British prime minister has praised the proposed ceasefire deal set out by Joe Biden, saying it is <welcome news>. Rishi Sunak said he hopes Hamas <takes this opportunity to take this deal that is on the table, [and] that would ensure hostages can be released and be back with their families>. He also expressed hopes to <flood Gaza with far more aid than has been getting in> and to <use that pause in the fighting to build a sustainable and lasting peace>. Mr Sunak joins a growing group of world leaders expressing support for the deal, which will only put more pressure on Israel and Hamas.
Israeli opposition leader urges Netanyahu to take deal - and says he will prop up government. Israel's opposition leader Yair Lapid has called on Benjamin Netanyahu to take the ceasefire deal set out by the US last night. <The Israeli government cannot ignore President Biden's significant speech,> he wrote on X. <There is a deal on the table and it needs to be done.> Significantly, he also suggested he would help to prop up the government should Mr Netanyahu face opposition from far-right politicians. <Reminds Netanyahu that he has a security network from us for the hostage deal if Ben Gabir and Smotrich leave the government,> Mr Lapid said.
Experts have said Mr Netanyahu fears that if he cannot declare a victory of some kind in Gaza and instead takes a ceasefire deal, he could potentially face the collapse of his government.
.....
Palestinian Islamic Jihad views proposal 'with suspicion'
Since Joe Biden unveiled a ceasefire proposal last night, Hamas has signalled it could accept the deal. But there was a less enthusiastic response from one of the other major armed groups operating in Gaza, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). The PIJ said it looks <with suspicion> at the proposal.
<It is still clear that the American administration is completely biased towards the Zionist entity, covering up its crimes and participating in the aggression,> it said. <We will evaluate any proposal in a way that ensures an end to the war of genocide against our people, preserves their interests and rights, and meets the demands of the resistance.>

Child dies from malnutrition and dehydration in Gaza - report
A 13-year-old Palestinian child has died from malnutrition and dehydration, according to Wafa news agency. The child reportedly died in al Aqsa Martyrs hospital. Medical officials told the news agency that the death toll from malnutrition and dehydration has risen to 37 people in Gaza.
Children under five are at the greatest risk of malnutrition, Save the Children has said. In March, UNICEF said nearly a third of children under two years old were suffering from acute malnutrition in northern Gaza.>>

<<Live: Hamas says Israel's Gaza ceasefire plan 'positive'
Hamas on Friday said it 'considers positively' an Israeli roadmap towards a full Gaza ceasefire announced by US President Joe Biden, who urged an end to the almost eight-month war. But swiftly afterwards, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu poured cold water on Biden's talk of peace, insisting the army would continue fighting until it had 'eliminated' Hamas's capacity to rule Gaza and pose a military threat.

<<France bans Israeli firms from exhibiting at upcoming defence fair
France has banned Israeli companies from participating in this year's annual Eurosatory arms and defence industry exhibition in Villepinte near Paris next month, the event's organisers and the French Defence Ministry said on Friday. <Following a decision by government authorities, there will not be an Israeli stand at the Eurosatory 2024 salon,> a spokesperson for the organisers said via email. The Defence Ministry told Reuters that: <Conditions are no longer met to host Israeli companies at the show at a time when the President is calling for Israel to cease operations in Rafah.> Seventy-four Israeli firms had been set to be represented at the event from June 17 to 21 at fairgrounds close to Paris' main international airport, with Coges previously saying around 10 of them were to exhibit weapons. Contacted by AFP, the Israeli embassy said it did not wish to comment. The incident comes days after the Israeli bombing of a camp for the displaced in the Gaza Strip sparked international outrage and protests in France. President Emmanuel Macron said he was <outraged> by the air strike that triggered a fire killing 45 people in a tent camp in the Gazan tent city of Rafah, almost eight months into the latest Gaza war. The conflict erupted after Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,189 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
Militants also took 252 hostages, 121 of whom remain in Gaza, including 37 the army says are dead.
Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed more than 36,000 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.
A group of activists last week in a legal warning urged Coges to take measure to avoid the buying and selling of weapons that could be used in <crimes> committed in Gaza or other parts of the occupied Palestinian territories.
ASER, Stop Arming Israel, Urgency Palestine and the France-Palestine Solidarity Association also warned against profits from the fair <reinforcing the economic power of firms likely to participate in these crimes>. Coges told AFP it was <a fair solely for the presentation of defence and security equipment ... and in no means a place for deals>.

<<Israeli attacks on Rafah continue despite international calls to halt its operations
Israeli attacks on Rafah continue despite the ICJ ruling on May 24 that ordered Israel to halt its operations there. At least 12 Palestinians were killed in Rafah on Thursday.
News Center- At least 12 Palestinians were killed and many others injured in Israeli airstrikes on Rafah on Thursday, according to Gaza medical sources The Israeli army said Thursday that it took control of the strategically important buffer zone along the Gaza-Egypt border. Communication services have been cut off in Rafah due to <the ongoing aggression>, Palestinian Telecommunications Company Jawa said in a statement on Thursday. A Palestinian civilian was killed in an airstrike on Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City in the north of the densely populated enclave, the medics said. In the interview broadcast on TF1's news channel LCI on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his country's devastating offensive in Gaza and claimed that Israel was not targeting civilians or deliberately trying to cause a famine.
Demonstration in front of the channel
After the interview, hundreds gathered in front of the channel to protest the channel for airing an interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
Israel and Egypt have reached an agreement
Israel and Egypt have reached an agreement in principle to reopen the Rafah Border Crossing in southern Gaza to humanitarian aid for the first time since the Israel Defense Forces took control of the Gazan side of the crossing in early May, the Kan public broadcaster reported on Thursday. The agreement was reached as a result of US pressure on both sides, the report added.>>

<<Can Israel ignore the pressure? International condemnation swells after Rafah offensive
Can Israel ignore the pressure? Young people outraged by the graphic images of the Rafah tent fire that killed dozens of civilians out in the streets of Paris and Marseille, this as Ireland, Norway and Spain recognize a Palestinian state and international courts mount cases over the war in Gaza.
A war that could last another seven months, says a top official in Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Fact is, Israeli citizens are also traumatized by October 7th and its aftermath but not seeing the same images as the rest of the world on their social media feeds. Then there's Israel's biggest backer, with a Biden administration that so far refuses to say that Israel's operation in Rafah crosses its red lines and a Republican opposition that is 100-percent behind Netanyahu. In past Middle East wars, it is often the US that has been the one to call time. Why after nearly eight months, is this time different?
