<<Security Forces Clash with Protesters in Baluchistan
Peaceful protests in multiple cities across the south-eastern Iranian
province of Sistan and Baluchistan took a violent turn after security
forces intervened to disperse the demonstrators. Ethnic Baluch
protesters took to the streets of the provincial capital, Zahedan, and
other cities including Iranshahr, Rask, Chabahar and Saravan after
Friday prayers on June 23, calling for the overthrow of the Islamic
Republic. Local groups monitoring events in the province reported that
military forces clashed with demonstrators in Rask and Iranshahr. In
footage shared by Haalvsh, protesters in Rask can be seen hurling stones
at armed forces while chanting slogans calling for the death of Supreme
Leader Ali Khamenei. Local Sunni cleric Molavi Abdul Ghaffar Naqshbandi
said on Twitter that security forces attacked the Sunni Mosque and Rask
Seminary in an attempt to arrest his father, another prominent cleric.
He called upon local residents to block the roads in Rask to obstruct
the movements of the Islamic Republic's security forces. In Iranshahr,
Chabahar and Saravan, protesters also poured onto the streets after
prayers, chanting slogans such as <rape, crime, death to this state.> In
Zahedan, Haalvsh reported that security and military forces conducted
widespread arrests around the Grand Makki Mosque.
Despite heightened security measures, videos shared on social media show
protesters in the city shouting slogans such as <I will kill, I will
kill, whoever killed my brother,> <Kurds, Baluch, and Azeri, freedom and
equality,> and <Death to Khamenei.> In his sermon, the outspoken Sunni
Friday prayer leader of Zahedan accused the Islamic Republic's
leadership of neglecting national interests. Molavi Abdulhamid urged
Iran's Shia rulers to abandon ineffective policies and instead heed the
voice of the people.<As long as we have breath in our bodies, we will
prioritize the interests of the Iranian people, and we are prepared to
face any threat to our lives in pursuit of these interests,> the
75-year-old cleric said, referring to an assassination plot against him.
Earlier this week, local news reports quoted sources as saying an
intelligence operation by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)
had attempted the poisoning of the imam, which was thwarted by the
identification and arrest of an individual assigned to carry out the
killing. Sistan and Baluchistan is home to Iran's Sunni Baluch minority
of up to 2 million people. The provincial capital has seen protest
rallies every Friday since September 30 of last year, when security
forces killed nearly 100 people in the deadliest incident in the
nationwide demonstrations sparked by Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody. Iranian security forces have responded to the protest movement
with brutal force, killing more than 520 people during demonstrations
and unlawfully detaining over 20,000 others, activists say. Following
biased trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including
the death penalty, to protesters. The protests and clampdown on dissent
have been particularly intense in western Kurdish areas and Sistan and
Baluchistan.>>

An Iranian court has sentenced political activist Ahmedreza Haeri to
three months and one day in prison on charges of <spreading lies> local
media reported. Branch 1040 of the Criminal Court in Tehran handed down
the sentence in absentia on June 21, as Haeri was serving a previous
conviction in Tehran's Evin prison. The plaintiff in the latest case,
the Tehran Province Prisons Organization, accused Haeri of disseminating
<false> information regarding the deaths of inmates in Greater Tehran
Prison. The court documents include Haeri's writings about prisoners
such as Sasan Nik Nafs and Amir Hossein Hatami who died in the prison in
2021. In September last year, Haeri was handed a sentence of three years
and eight months for <assembly and collusion with the intention of
committing a crime against national security,> along with an additional
eight months for <propaganda> against the Islamic Republic. In May this

<<The Ordeal of a Yoga Instructor in Iranian Dungeons
The life of Ali Rezaei, a 39-year-old yoga instructor and teacher of
Turkish language, took a devastating turn on December 11, 2022, when
security forces stormed his home in Mianeh in the north-western province
of East Azarbaijan, seized his electronic devices and other personal
belongings, and took him to custody. Blindfolded and handcuffed, Rezaei
was transferred to Tehran's Evin Prison. During his transfer, he was
subjected to verbal abuse that included explicit threats of sexual
assault, a source told IranWire. In Evin's Ward 209, Rezaei endured days
of solitary confinement during which the interrogators extracted
self-incriminating confessions from the detainee. Rezaei was forced to
sign over 3,000 pages predominantly consisting of printed copies of his
social media posts and stories from recent years. <For an entire week,
Ali endured grueling sessions, was forced to sign the printouts from
eight in the morning until five in the afternoon. These printed
materials filled three voluminous files each containing 500 to 600
pages,> the source said. Following the interrogation process, Rezaei was
transferred to Greater Tehran Prison, where he held Turkish language
classes for fellow detainees. <Ali is a teacher and yoga instructor who,
prior to his imprisonment, assisted patients with multiple sclerosis,>
IranWire's source said. After some time, Judge Abolqasem Salavati
ordered Rezaei to be sent back to Evin Prison for further interrogation.
There, Rezaei endured 10 days of intensive questioning during which the
interrogator focused on his trips to Azerbaijan and Turkey. Rezaei was
then sent to Greater Tehran Prison again and to Evin Prison, where he
has remained to this day. In Evin, Rezaei continued to teach Turkish to
prisoners and helped them to alleviate the stress of their imprisonment.
According to information obtained by IranWire, a first instance court
presided over by Judge Abulqasem Salvati sentenced Rezaei to five years
in prison on charges of <gathering and collusion with the intention of
committing a crime against national security> and an additional year for
<propaganda against the regime.> <It is important to note that he had
never admitted to participating in street rallies or planning them, and
no evidence was presented to support these allegations> the source said.
Rezaei was deprived of the right to legal representation during the
judicial process. Additionally, Judge Salvati warned his relatives that
they would be incarcerated if they pursued legal action.>>

On June 21, 2023, Ms. Farghadani was transferred to a hospital's
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to her deteriorating condition. The life
of Atena Farghadani is in danger, and according to her lawyer, her
critical condition is a result of the assault and injuries in prison and
the consequences of her dry hunger strike.
Atena Farghadani, a committed artist
Atena Farghadani, who was previously deprived of continuing her studies
at the master's level due to her activities, was arrested and
transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran after being summoned and reporting
to the Evin courthouse. Atena Farghadani was arrested in September 2014
and sentenced to 12 years and nine months of imprisonment for <insulting
the leader (Khamenei).> Ultimately, this sentence was reduced to 18
months of imprisonment in the Revision Court. Ms. Farghadani was
sentenced to 12 years in prison for drawing and posting on social media
cartoons that depicted members of the regime's parliament with animal
heads.
She was charged with <conspiracy against national security,> <propaganda
against the state,> and <insulting members of the parliament.> When she
was temporarily released from prison in 2014, she exposed the harassment
and abuses faced by prisoners, which quickly led to her return to

<<Baha'i Sentenced to Six Years in Prison and Assets Seized
Hami Bahadori, a 26-year-old Baha'i citizen, was transferred to Branch
15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on Wednesday, 21 June, without the
knowledge of his lawyer and family and sentenced to six years in prison,
IranWire reports. The court session concluded with an immediate
announcement of the verdict. Bahadori was sentenced to five years in
prison on charges of <gathering and collusion,> with an additional
one-year prison term for spreading <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic under the guise of preaching for Baha'is.> This resulted in a
total of six years in prison for Bahadori, accompanied by a two-year ban
on leaving the country. The judge also ordered the confiscation of
belongings seized by authorities from Bahadori and his wife. These items
included an iMac, laptop, camera with three lenses, hard drive, internet
modem, and gold. The court refused to accept bail after the court
session concluded, promptly ordering the execution of the sentence. This
decision has raised serious concerns about the denial of bail and the
swift implementation of the verdict. Hami Bahadori was taken into
custody by security agents in his private residence in Tehran on October
22, 2022, and has since endured indefinite detention for eight months.>>

<<UN Official Says Iran's Human Right Situation <Deteriorating>
In a statement issued on June 21, Nada Al-Nashif, the United Nations
Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed grave concern over
Iran's deteriorating human rights situation. Al-Nashif highlighted the
limited engagement and implementation of recommendations from
international human rights mechanisms by the Islamic Republic's
authorities. <The overall human rights situation in the Islamic Republic
of Iran has markedly deteriorated against the backdrop of continuously
worsening socio-economic conditions, aggravated by sanctions and the
lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,> Al-Nashif said on June 21.
According to Al-Nashif, the UN's the Human Rights Council has been
presented with a report by Secretary-General António Guterres on the
situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic, covering the period
from 1 August 2022 to 15 April 2023.
<There was a substantial increase in arbitrary detentions of protesters,
activists, human rights defenders, and lawyers,> Al-Nashif said. <Civic
and democratic space continued to be restricted in the country. Security
forces used disproportionate force in some instances in the context of
demonstrations as well as large-scale security operations leading to
death and injury of protestors, raising concerns of unlawful killings.
Arbitrary detention of protestors, activists, human rights defenders,
and lawyers significantly increased during the reporting period,> she
added. The High Commissioner's statement underscored the dire conditions
prevailing in Iran's prisons, specifically addressing the lack of
attention from judicial authorities and prison officials towards the
health and well-being of political and ideological prisoners. Several
IranWire investigations have unveiled harrowing details of torture,
physical abuse, and sexual assault inflicted upon detained protesters,
both male and female, in Iran's detention centers and prisons. Narges
Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist incarcerated in Evin
Prison, had previously reached out to the United Nations, shedding light
on the chaotic state of the women's prison within Evin and emphasizing
the urgent need for medical care and treatment for several female
inmates.
Al-Nashif also expressed grave concern over the significant increase in
executions in Iran.
<In 2022, 582 people were executed, that is a 75 per cent increase
compared to 2021, during which 333 people were reportedly executed.
There were three children among those executed in 2022. Of the total
number of executions, 256 were for drug-related offences,> she said.
<The numbers of those executed from minority communities remain
disproportionately high, particularly for alleged drug-related or
security-related crimes,> she added. The Iran Human Rights Organization,
based in Norway, announced that 350 people have been executed in Iranian
prisons in the first half of 2023. Since the start of nationwide
protests in September 2022, the Islamic Republic has executed seven
protesters through an unjust and expedited process. Furthermore, Supreme
Court upheld the death sentence of another protester, Mohammad Qobadloo.
According to Amnesty International's report, at least seven other
protesters have been sentenced to death, with dozens more at risk of
receiving the same verdict. Despite widespread domestic and
international criticism regarding the escalating issuance and execution
of death sentences in Iran, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ajei, the head of the
judiciary in the Islamic Republic, defended the continuation of these
executions and justified the actions taken by the government.>>

<<Albanian Police Raid Iranian Dissidents Camp, Seize Computer Devices
Albanian police have raided a camp near Tirana home to members of the
exile Iranian opposition group Mujahedin-e Khalk (MEK), and seized 150
computer devices allegedly linked to prohibited activities. Albanian
authorities said both police officers and Iranian dissidents were
injured during clashes at the Ashraf-3 camp on June 20. The opposition
group said one person also died. The Albanian authorities denied
responsibility. Police said the operation was carried out on the orders
of the Albanian judiciary due to the <violation of agreements and
commitments> made by the group when they settled in Albania a decade
ago. Police declined to provide specifics on what the investigation was
about, but local media reported that the operation was part of a probe
into cyber-crime. Media reports said that when police arrived at the
camp hundreds of MEK members tried to repel the officers. The group
accused the police of using pepper spray. According to Interior Minister
Blendi Cuci, police did all they could to avoid causing <incidents,>
adding, <The Mujahedin violence toward the police is intolerable.> He
said that officers were awaiting a forensics report into the death of a
man in his seventies. State Police Director-General Muhamet Rrumbullaku
said 15 police officers and 21 MEK members were injured and several
police cars were damaged. Police seized 96 computer units and about 50
laptops and tablets, he said. Under a UN and US-backed deal in 2013 that
saw them leave Iraq, the MEK settled in Albania and other countries.
Their numbers have grown to around 2,800 people at Ashraf 3, the largest
MEK camp in the world. In 2022, Tirana cut off diplomatic ties with the
Islamic Republic, accusing it of carrying out massive cyber-attacks
against Albania. Tehran considers the MEK a terrorist group.>>

<<Report: France Bans Iranian Opposition Rally, Citing Attack Threat
French authorities have banned a planned Iranian opposition rally in
Paris, citing the risk of a terrorist attack, Reuters news agency
reported on June 19. The Paris-based National Council of Resistance of
Iran (NCRI), political arm of the People's Mujahideen Organisation of
Iran (PMOI), planned its annual rally on July 1. In a letter sent to the
organizers and seen by Reuters, Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez said
that, following months of nationwide anti-government protests in Iran, a
<tense context> developed posing <very significant security risks> to
NCRI gatherings. Therefore, the group's annual meeting <cannot be held,>
Nunez added. Shahin Gobadi, a member of the NCRI's Foreign Affairs
Committee, condemned the decision, saying: <If French authorities take
such a stance, it will represent a brazen disregard for democratic
principles, caving in to the ruling religious tyranny's blackmail and
hostage-taking.> In a statement sent to Reuters, Paris police confirmed
they had informed the rally's organizing committee of the decision to
ban the event as it could <generate disturbances to public order due to
the geopolitical context.> <Moreover, given the terrorist risk cannot be
neglected, the holding of such an event would make its security but also
the security of sensitive guests extremely complex,> it added. The ban
comes a few weeks after the Islamic Republic released several European
citizens from prison, including two French nationals.>>

<<IRGC Intelligence Chief Accuses 20 Countries Of Fomenting Protests
The head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' intelligence (IRGC-IO)
claimed on June 19 that the secret services of some 20 countries were
involved in inciting months-long nationwide protests last year. In an
interview with the website of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Brigadier
General Mohammad Kazemi alleged that the United States, Belgium, Canada,
France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Iran's arch-foe Israel
were among the countries involved in supporting the anti-government
protests. Saudi Arabia, with which Tehran resumed diplomatic ties this
year after a seven-year hiatus, and the United Arab Emirates were also
involved, he said. Kazemi claimed that Emirati and Israeli intelligence
agencies held <periodic meetings in an Arab country to back the
troubles> in Iran, while French diplomats based in Tehran <gathered
information on the ground regarding the riots and the security forces.>
The IRGC-IO chief did not provide any evidence to back up his claims.
Many of the countries he listed expressed their support for the
demonstrations demanding economic, social and political changes, and
imposed sanctions against the Islamic Republic for cracking down on the
protesters. The European Union, the United States, the UK and other
countries have imposed several rounds of sanctions on Iran over its
brutal response to the protest movement. Activists say more than 520
people have been killed and over 20,000 others have been unlawfully
detained in connection with the protests sparked by the September 16
death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Following biased
trials, the judiciary has handed down stiff sentences, including the
death penalty, to protesters.>>

<<Report: Plot to Kill Iran's Top Sunni Cleric Uncovered
A plot to assassinate outspoken Sunni cleric Molavi Abdulhamid has been
foiled, the Haalvsh human rights organization reported on June 19.
Haalvsh, a group that monitors rights violations in the south-eastern
province of Sistan and Baluchistan, said the security guards of
Zahedan's Makki Mosque arrested a man masquerading as a religious
student who wanted to poison Molavi. The man said the plot was
orchestrated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC)
intelligence service. As news of the foiled assassination attempt
spread, Zahedan residents rushed toward the Makki Mosque and the
authorities bolstered security around the city. Government officials did
not immediately comment on the alleged plot to kill Molavi, the Sunni
Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchistan.
The 75-year-old cleric has been a key dissenting voice inside Iran since
the eruption of nationwide protests in September 2022, using his sermons
to call for fundamental economic, social and political changes in the
country. In response, the security agencies have increased pressure on
Molavi, banning him from leaving the country for a planned Hajj
pilgrimage to Islam's holy places in Saudi Arabia. Zahedan has been
rocked by weekly protest rallies after Friday prayers since September
30, when security forces killed nearly 100 people in the deadliest
incident in the nationwide demonstrations sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death
in police custody in September>>

<<Canada Sanctions Iranian judges over <Gross> Rights Abuses
The Canadian government says it has sanctioned seven Revolutionary Court
judges for their role in <gross and systematic human rights abuses.>
<As an institution closely tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
(IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence, the Revolutionary Courts are
notorious for issuing death sentences and harsh prison terms following
sham trials and based on evidence gathered under torture,> the Canadian
government said in a statement on June 19. The measures prohibit
dealings with those targeted by the sanctions and freeze any assets they
may have held in Canada. The individuals listed are also banned from
entering the country. Canada has joined the European Union, the United
Kingdom and the United States in imposing several rounds of sanctions
against the Islamic Republic over its bloody crackdown on months of
anti-government demonstrations sparked by the September 2022 death of
22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of morality police. Amini had
been arrested for allegedly wearing a hijab improperly.
....
<More than six months ago, the Iranian people demanded change,> Canadian
Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly said. <They issued a call that
was heard around the world and asked the Iranian regime to respect their
human rights and freedom. Yet, the regime has yet to respond and,
instead, is increasing its use of execution, suppression and
intimidation. Canada will continue to support the Iranian people and we
will use the tools at our disposal to respond to Iran’s egregious
actions.> >>
