<<Iranian Sunni Cleric Says Politics Should Be Left to Politicians
Iran's most prominent Sunni cleric has urged the country's Shia clerical
establishment and armed forces to leave politics, as residents of the
south-eastern city of Zahedan took to the streets for their 41st
consecutive Friday of protests against the Islamic Republic. <We believe
that the military can be successful in their own domain, but politics
and policies are meant for politicians,> Molavi Abdulhamid, the
outspoken Sunni Friday prayer leader of Zahedan, said in his sermon on
July 14. <Let the scholars and clerics focus on teaching, issuing fatwas
and other matters attributed to them,> he added. The 75-year-old Sunni
cleric also condemned a recent armed attack on the Zahedan police
station, saying that <the spirit of people does not condone violence and
criminal activities.> On July 8, armed individuals attacked the police
station near Grand Makki Mosque, where Molavi delivers his sermons. All
four attackers and two police officers were killed in the assault. The
Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack,
saying that the police station was <one of the main causes of Bloody
Friday.> It referred to September 30 when security forces killed nearly
100 people during protests in Zahedan, the deadliest incident in the
nationwide demonstrations sparked by Mahsa Amini's death in police
custody. The city has since been rocked by weekly protest rallies after
Friday prayers. On July 14, hundreds of Zahedan residents marched
through the streets in silence amid internet disruptions and heavy
security presence. Internet monitor NetBlocks reported a <significant
disruption to internet connectivity> in the city, saying that <the
incident continues the weekly pattern of regional internet shutdowns
targeting anti-government protests at Friday prayers.> >>

<<Milad Abdi: A Student Persecuted for Speaking Out against
Discrimination
Milad Abdi's life took a fateful turn eight months ago as he was
abducted by agents of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC)
Intelligence Organization and taken into custody where he was subjected
to brutal beating, electric shock and <mock execution.> Abdi's ordeal
began during a student protest in Tehran on November 3 when he
approached Ardeshir Entezari, the president of Tehran's Allameh
Tabatabai University, to voice grievances about the discrimination he
faced due to his Kurdish ethnicity, as well as his ordinary and Sunni
background. During a brief encounter, Entezari responded to Abdi's
complaints by warning him that he should expect to be kidnapped,
<perhaps in a sack.> The next day, security guards prevented the young
man from entering the university. And on November 7, two armed
motorcyclists pursued him near the student dormitory, arrested him and
blindfolded him before forcing him into a car. There, Abdi was brutally
beaten with batons and subjected to electric shocks, after which he
suffered a torn eardrum. Abdi was subsequently held in solitary
confinement at an IRGC <safe house> for eight days. During his
incarceration, he launched a hunger strike to protest his cruel
treatment which included being subjected to <mock execution.> Throughout
his solitary confinement, he underwent as many as 17 interrogations
lasting more than five hours each for the alleged crimes of
participating in a sit-in, singing the national anthem and confronting
the university president. Abdi's only interaction with his family was a
37-second phone call with her mother. He was ultimately transferred to
Tehran's notorious Evin prison. On January 11, Judge Abulqasem Salavati
sentenced the young man to six years in prison, although the term was
reduced to two years on appeal. During the trial, which lasted 10
minutes, Abdi was denied legal representation and the opportunity to
defend himself. He was released from prison in February as part of an
<amnesty> declared for political prisoners and protesters.
Abdi’s Suffering Didn't End with His Release
Persistent threats from unknown sources, directed not only at him but
also his family, took a severe toll on Abdi's mental well-being. Weary
from the physical, mental and emotional wounds inflicted upon him, he
made the difficult decision to leave Iran and seek refuge in Turkey.
Life there is far from easy as Abdi struggles to find proper shelter and
sustenance while working night shifts to barely make ends meet. Abdi's
story is emblematic of the persecution that countless individuals are
facing under oppressive regimes. But despite the darkness that has
clouded his dreams, Abdi remains resilient and hopeful. He aspires to
return to his homeland, resume his studies, and revive his ambition to
make a career in sports.>>

<<Widespread Arrests Reported in Isfahan
Iranian intelligence agents conducted mass arrests in the central city
of Isfahan on July 11, IranWire reports. Details surrounding the arrests
and the exact number of those detained remain sketchy. However, sources
from the Isfahan city prisons organization said that around 20 people
were taken into custody. The male detainees were taken to Dastgerd
Prison, while women and teenage girls were transferred to Soroush, the
Ministry of Intelligence Detention Center.
The accusations are not known.
The arrests come amid increased pressure on dissent ahead of the first
anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death while in the custody of the morality
police. Her September death sparked months of anti-government
demonstrations across the country, the biggest challenge to the islamic
Republic's leadership in decades.>>

<<IRGC Chief: The Islamic Republic Goes through its <Most Sensitive Time
Ever>
The commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
said his forces would take decisive action against those who pose a
national security threat, as the Islamic Republic is going through its
<most sensitive time ever.> Hossein Salami made the comments on July 13
amid growing concerns among senior Iranian officials regarding the
potential resurgence of protests after months of anti-government
demonstrations last year posed the biggest challenge to the islamic
Republic's leadership in decades. Addressing a group of commanders and
officials in the southern city of Ahvaz, Salami indirectly acknowledged
the opposition of many young Iranians to the country's clerical
establishment. <Our battle with the enemy revolves around recruiting
young people; we must provide support and protect them from the perils
of the enemy's fire,> he said. <We have to fight against the Western
enemies, we fight against those who are at war with us, but we have to
save those who are infected.> The IRGC chief also called for <fortifying
the IRGC and safeguarding all citizens, irrespective of their religious
or ideological affiliations.> >>

<<Woman from Kermanshah: Iranian women want to have equal rights with
men
Kermanshah- Jina Mahsa Amini, who was hospitalized due to torture in
custody by Iran’s so-called <morality police> for not wearing her hijab
properly, died in the intensive care unit of Tehran's Kasra Hospital on
September 16, 2022. Protests led by women chanting, <Jin, Jiyan, Azadi
(English: Women, Life, Freedom)> sparked in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan
following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. However, the Iranian government
has been using many methods such as torture, execution and violence to
quell the nationwide protests. Despite the oppression of the Iranian
government, the people in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan have been holding
protests for 10 months.
'Women keep resisting despite all kinds of oppression'
H.G. is a woman from Kermanshah believing that having a free life is one
of the most fundamental rights of every individual. <Security forces and
some people in society try to oppress women for not wearing hijab. Women
keep resisting despite all kinds of oppression.>
'Women want to have equal rights with men'
Noting that as women, they are aware of their rights, she said, <Hijab
should be optional not compulsory. A free life is one of the most
fundamental rights of every individual. Women certainly want to have
equal rights with men to participate in all facets of life.> >>

<<Karaj Residents Too Are Suffering from Water Shortages
As acute water scarcity continues to afflict cities and towns in the
south-western Iranian province of Khuzestan and Sistan and Baluchistan
in the south-east, reports have emerged about severe water shortages in
Karaj, near Tehran, amid temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
Water cuts have affected multiple areas in and around Karaj over the
past four days, with the authorities attributing the disruptions to
<incorrect water consumption patterns among customers” and <technical
issues in the distribution network.> Tankers are being used to bring
drinking water to some of the affected areas, but many residents are
left with no other choice but to purchase bottled and packaged water to
meet their needs. In media interviews, residents of Kianmehr
neighborhood said that the regional water department and other
authorities have given vague answers to their queries, such as "the
water tanks are empty.> Mehdi Mehrvar, the director-general of Crisis
Management in Alborz province, whose capital is Karaj, blamed the
citizens' <increased consumption> for the shortages. Mehrvar further
stated that the authorities are implementing <measures to prevent
interruptions in water and electricity supply.> The planned measures,
which were formulated after various meetings between officials from
Karaj metropolis and Alborz province, include the deployment of water
tankers to all areas experiencing water shortages. Such shortages - and
protests over water scarcity - are becoming more commonplace across
Iran, with poor water management, drought and corruption-ridden
infrastructure projects contributing to the crisis. The water crisis in
Khuzestan prompted protests in the province in July 2021, which
triggered demonstrations against the government nationwide.>>

<<Security Forces Raid Baluch Village; Arrests, Property Damage Reported
Iranian security forces have stormed a Baluch village in the southern
province of Hormozgan, leading to the destruction of property and the
arrest of 150 people, according to activists and police. The Baluch
Activists Campaign said that the July 12 assault on Kolahi village in
Minab district resulted in the arson of fuel tanks and the destruction
of several houses. The group quoted a source as saying that a special
force unit and other troops cordoned off Kolahi before the raid and
subjected the villagers to hours of travel restrictions. Some residents
attempted to prevent the military forces from entering the village by
igniting a fire, the source said. Human rights lawyer Mohammad Moghimi
released several videos showing what he called the <massive deployment
of military forces of the Islamic Republic.> Moghimi accused the
government forces of <destroying public property> and <employing
physical violence during arrests.> The videos shared on social media
suggest that the security forces confiscated numerous Nissan cars and
other properties belonging to Baluch fuel carriers. Ali Akbar Javidanfar,
the police commander of Hormozgan province, announced that 150 <Afghan
citizens> were arrested during the raid, which he said was part of an
operation to <eliminate fuel smuggling.> He said that <550 tanks
containing 300,000 liters of illicitly transported fuel> have already
been discovered since the launch of the operation. The Baluch Activists
Campaign reported multiple attacks on Kolahi in recent years, which led
to losses of life and injuries among the village's youth. The group says
that rampant unemployment forces the residents of Kolahi and neighboring
areas to become fuel carriers. Police often use lethal force to crack
down on this activity, which the authorities consider as being illegal.
Etemad newspaper recently reported on the dangers that fuel carriers
face, including gunfire from border agents and the risk of being burned
alive in their vehicles. Last year alone, at least 168 fuel carriers
lost their lives in car explosions around the cities of Iranshahr and
Sarbaz, south-eastern Sistan and Baluchistan province. According to
Haalvsh, a news website that covers events in Baluch-populated areas, 82
Baluch citizens involved in fuel transportation were directly or
indirectly killed by security forces last year.>>

<<Civil Rights Activist Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison
Mahmoud Ojaghlo, an Iranian civil rights activist held in Tehran's Evin
prison, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison, IranWire reports. The
verdict was issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, with
Judge Abulqasem Salavati presiding over the case. Ojaghlo was handed a
five-year prison term on the charge of <gathering and colluding to act
against national security, <another five years for <membership in
illegal groups,> five years for <inciting people to war and disrupting
national security,> and one more year for <propaganda against the
system.> Judge Salavati also banned the defendant from traveling, from
joining political groups and organizations, and from engaging in online
activities for a period of two years.
In accordance with Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the actual
term Ojaghlo is due to serve is five years, the lengthiest sentence
imposed for the most serious charge. Ojaghlo was arrested on December 11
last year during <Woman, Life, Freedom> protests in Tehran. He was first
held in Ward 209 of Evin prison, where he launched a hunger strike to
protest his prolonged detention and uncertainty surrounding his case. He
was transferred to the prison's general ward after spending nearly two
months in the security ward. Ojaghlo had previously faced arrests due to
his advocacy for ethnic rights.>>

<<Iran's Raisi Attacks West for Promoting <Ugly Phenomenon of
Homosexuality>
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has used his official visit to Uganda to
sharply condemn Western nations for allegedly promoting <the ugly
phenomenon of homosexuality.> <The Western countries try to identify
homosexuality as an index of civilization, while this is one of the
dirtiest things which have been done in human history,> Raisi said on
July 12 after a private meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
<I believe that this issue, and these strong attacks by the West against
the establishment of families and against the culture of the nations, is
another area of cooperation for Iran and Uganda,> he also said. Raisi
made the remarks after Uganda introduced legislation in May making
<aggravated homosexuality> a capital offense and same-sex relations
punishable by life in prison, triggering outrage among human rights
groups, the United Nations, LGBT activists and Western countries. In
Iran, the punishment for homosexuality is death for men and up to 100
lashes for women. After repeat offenses, women can become subject to the
death penalty. During a 2007 visit to Columbia University in New York,
then Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad triggered laughs and boos
from the audience and widespread criticism in the West when he said, <In
Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country.> <In Iran we do not
have this phenomenon,> he continued. <I do not know who has told you we
have it.> >>
