<<Israel's war on Gaza live: Israel turns east Khan Younis into
'wasteland'
Palestinians are returning to the eastern parts of Khan Younis after the
unannounced withdrawal of Israeli forces from the area, finding it
largely destroyed and describing it as "an uninhabitable wasteland". A
WHO spokesperson has told Al Jazeera that a ceasefire is needed to
ensure vaccines reach children as Gaza's Health Ministry says "immediate
intervention" is needed to prevent a polio epidemic from spreading.
Far-right Israeli demonstrators have stormed two military bases
protesting against the arrests of nine Israeli soldiers accused of
abusing a Palestinian prisoner.
At least 39,363 people have been killed and 90,923 wounded in Israel's
war on Gaza. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the
Hamas-led attacks on October 7 and more than 200 were taken captive.>>

crimes against humanity in Gaza
Jinha - Womens News Agency - July 30, 2024
<<Israel commits crimes against humanity in Gaza
Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have violated the Palestinians' right
to life since October 7,2024 by targeting civilian infrastructure,
including water facilities.
News Center-Israel has been waging a war in the Gaza Strip since October
7, 2023. Two Palestinian children, aged 13 and 14, were shot and injured
during an Israeli military raid into Askar refugee camp, east of Nablus,
the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said on Monday. Israeli forces
detained at least 15 Palestinians from multiple areas in the occupied
West Bank late last night and early Tuesday morning, the Palestinian
news agency WAFA reported on Tuesday.
10,000 students and 400 teachers killed in Gaza
10,000 students and 400 teachers have been killed in Israeli attacks on
the Gaza Strip since October 7,2023, the Palestinian Ministry of
Education said in a statement on Monday, adding that 39,000 Palestinian
students could not take the university entrance exam due to Israeli
attacks. Over 625,000 Palestinian children in Gaza have been deprived of
education since the start of the Israeli onslaught on the besieged
enclave on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the United Nations Relief and
Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). More than
80 percent of Gaza's schools have been severely damaged or destroyed by
fighting, according to the United Nations.
Water crisis in Rafah
Rafah has become a disaster area and lost 40 percent of its water
resources due to the ongoing Israeli attacks since May 2024, Rafah Mayor
Ahmed al-Sufi said in a statement on Monday. Israel continues to target
and destroy civilian infrastructure, including water facilities,
cultural centers, libraries and parks, he added. "35 percent of the city
has been completely destroyed by the Israeli troops. Israeli attacks
constitute a crime against humanity. The Israeli troops destroyed not
only the tank but also a water well in the Tal as-Sultan neighbourhood,
west of Rafah. The destruction exacerbated the water crisis in the
southern city." >>

Israel prevents children from receiving treatment
Jinha - Womens News Agency - July 29, 2024
<<Israel prevents over 150 Gazan children from receiving treatment
abroad
A plan to send some 150 sick Gazan children to the United Arab Emirates
for treatment has been postponed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu, according to reports.
News Center- Israel has been waging a war on the Gaza Strip since
October 7, 2023. 150 cisk Gazan children had been prepared to be flown
out to the United Arab Emirates on Monday morning to receive treatment;
however, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to
prevent about 150 sick and wounded Palestinian children from leaving
Gaza for the United Arab Emirates to receive treatment, the Kan, Israeli
state-owned TV channel, reported on Sunday. The move came after the
Hezbollah rocket attack on the Golan that killed 12 people, including
children, and injured 35 others on Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Hezbollah <will pay a heavy price for
this attack, one that it has not paid so far.> >>

Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said Friday on social platform X.
Calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza again, the UNRWA said,
<Families seek shelter where they can: overcrowded schools, destroyed
buildings, makeshift tents on the sand or amid piles of trash. None of
these places are safe. People have nowhere left to go.> Up to 1.9

France 25 - July 28, 2024 - by Claire PACCALIN
<<'We have nothing left in this world, except our daughter': a young
mother on life in Gaza
Shorouq spoke to FRANCE 24 in November about the challenges facing
pregnant women in Gaza, which is experiencing severe shortages of both
food and medical care. Eight months later, we asked her how she and her
family are coping; not only do they face a constant threat from air
strikes and shelling, but Shorouq's daughter is suffering from stomach
parasites due to dirty water. When FRANCE 24 spoke to Shorouq in
November, she was pregnant with her first child and living in a shelter
in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. She gave birth in a hospital via
C-section two months later, saying she was "very lucky" to have received
a spinal anaesthetic. But the very next day she was forced to flee to
Rafah to escape a rise in fighting.
"I tried four medical clinics in the hope someone could remove the
stitches from the C-section. But I didn't find anyone," she says. "So my
mother took the stitches out for me. We had no other choice." Shorouq
did not receive any postnatal care, which is defined as the period six
to eight weeks after giving birth. For a C-section, postnatal care would
have included a health professional removing the stitches using sterile
equipment and monitoring how the scar is healing to guard against
infection. <Pre-conflict, mothers in Gaza were able to access basic
care,> says Hiba Alhejazi, from the humanitarian charity CARE
International. <For example, they had access to hospitals where they
could get their baby weighed, where checks could be done for certain
health indicators, and there would be follow-up care for her. On a basic
level, that kind of care was available.> Research published in May by
the Palestinian non-governmental organisation Juzoor, a CARE
International partner, found that two-thirds of the Gazan mothers
surveyed - all of whom gave birth during the current conflict - did not
receive any postnatal care.
'Our apartment has been completely destroyed'
Shorouq has since fled again and is living, under the blistering summer
heat, in a tent in the centre of Gaza. "I've had to flee seven times,"
she says.
All of the clothes and toys she carefully picked out for her baby during
her pregnancy are gone. "We've been told that our apartment has been
completely destroyed. Right now we have nothing left in this world,
except our daughter."
'My baby is in huge pain'
Shorouq had to give up breastfeeding when her daughter was three months
old. She did not have sufficient breast milk because she could not
access enough food or water for herself to sustain a steady supply. She
now bottle-feeds her daughter, but sometimes she is forced to make up
the formula with water that she does not know is safe. "We buy purified
water for our daughter when we can, but it costs a lot of money and we
cannot always find it, so we have to use recycled water," she explains.
Unsanitary water has given her daughter intestinal parasites. "My baby
is in huge pain in her stomach, she cries a lot. You can see there's
something wrong in her stool, her sleep is broken and she never feels
rested, she's uncomfortable and suffering," says Shorouq. Desperate, she
tried 13 pharmacies before managing to get hold of the antibiotics her
daughter needs. She expects the antibiotics to work but knows the
parasites will return if she cannot consistently find clean water for
her daughter. "All I'm asking is that she recovers from the problem in
her stomach and for her to have good health. I pray for her every day,"
Shorouq says. "Water sanitation facilities have broken down," Alhejazi
explains. "There's sewage everywhere. We're in summer so it's hot, which
obviously increases the risk of dehydration. Lack of access to clean
water is a constant issue. And that’s also why you see the spread of so
many infectious diseases."
'This war has exhausted us'
The UN estimates that 5,500 women give birth every month in Gaza, or
about 180 per day. Some 15 percent are likely to experience
complications during pregnancy or childbirth that will require
additional medical care. During and after their pregnancies, they all
face the stress and fear caused by air strikes, helicopters and drones
in the skies above their heads. Israel launched a military offensive on
Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing almost
1,200 Israelis and foreigners and taking more than 250 people hostage.
The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 39,000 people have
since been killed and almost 90,000 injured by Israeli strikes on the
enclave. "I wish that this would end; we're really tired. This war has
exhausted us," says Shorouq. "We're strong people in Gaza, but even
iron-strong people are tired. None of us know when this will end. Each
time they announce that there could be a ceasefire, but nothing changes
for us on the ground."
After a six-day pause in the fighting late last year in exchange for the
release of 105 hostages, ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas have
faltered. Meanwhile, Shorouq and her daughter are coping as best they
can. But Shorouq feels helpless most of the time.
"Iwould do anything in the world for my daughter," she says.
"You cannot imagine how it feels when your child needs help, but you
cannot help them.">>

<<Paris Olympics: Yazan Al Bawwab, Palestinian swimmer on a mission
The flag-bearer for the Palestinian delegation, who was eliminated from
his 100m backstroke on Sunday, is also drawing attention to the tragic
fate of his compatriots. On Sunday, July 28, Yazan Al Bawwab spent less
than a minute in the Olympic pool at the Paris La Defense Arena,
finishing his 100m backstroke in 43rd place out of 46 swimmers. However,
he spent nearly half an hour talking to journalists, while other
swimmers quickly abandoned their PR duties. For Al Bawwab, it was more
important to talk than to swim. He is Palestinian. The young man, with a
Palestinian flag tattooed on his chest near his heart, told his story,
without tiring, in fluent English. He felt it his duty to be the voice
of more than 300 athletes killed in Gaza under bombardment, in response
to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israeli soil. Some of his family
members also died in the enclave, although he is not originally from
there. "I don't want to talk about them," he said, "otherwise I'll be
overwhelmed with emotion." He expressed his pride at having been chosen
as the Palestinian flag-bearer at the opening ceremony. "A lot of people
don't want us here, don't want to see our flag, hear my country's name.
But I'm here," he stated. "I'm here for those who are starving, for the
children who are being killed, not to talk about my swimming." He added,
for those who only read the sports section: "There's a war going on
right now." It's tricky to discuss current events, effectively breaking
the Olympic truce and its sacred or pseudo-neutrality, under the
watchful eye of the International Olympic Committee, which is known to
disapprove of mixing politics with sports. So Al Bawwab spoke with
diplomacy, using the art of saying without saying, describing a war
without naming an enemy. He never mentioned Israel. "I don't talk about
politics," he stated. "Putting politics into sports is a big mistake.
I'm against war. I have no issue with any human being except when they
don't treat me as a human being.>
'My story didn't interest you back then'
The story of the Al Bawwab family is a never-ending tale of forced exile
and wandering around the world. His family was originally from Lod, then
known as Lydda, where Ben Gurion airport now stands, near Tel Aviv. They
were expelled in 1948 and replaced by Jewish families. His father,
Rashad, was born in 1964 in a refugee tent on the West Bank. With no
prospects for the future, Rashad left for Italy at the age of 20,
sleeping on the street and selling tomatoes on the black market. He then
enrolled in university, graduated as a mechanical engineer and obtained
Italian citizenship, which he passed on to his son. Yazan was born in
October 1999 in Saudi Arabia, where his father had settled with his
mother, Habiba, herself a Palestinian refugee. The family moved to Dubai
two years later, where Rashad set up a successful office chair business.
Yazan moved to Canada to study aerospace engineering at the University
of Ottawa, completed his studies in the UK, settled in the Netherlands,
then returned to Dubai to set up a business, this time selling lounge
chairs. "Don't say 'wow! He's traveled a lot.' My family was kicked out
of their home," he said.>>

Le Monde - July 27, 2024 - by Louis Imbert (Jerusalem correspondent)
<<In Gaza, a young man with Down's syndrome was killed by an Israeli
army dog
After being attacked by the animal at his family's home, Muhammed Bhar,
a 24-year-old man with intellectual disability, was abandoned in a room
at the house, where he died of his injuries. Soldiers prevented his
mother and brothers from coming to his aid. Muhammed Bhar, 24, loved
music, calm, and having his hair stroked. It made him laugh. He rarely
left the family home in Shujaiya, an eastern suburb of Gaza City, where
he was cared for by his mother, siblings, nephews and nieces. The family
chose to stay in the city during the Israeli army's successive
incursions since November 2023, partly because Muhammed had Down's
syndrome, had difficulty moving around and was afraid of crowds. Many
Gazans looking after disabled, elderly or sick relatives have done the
same. They are among some 300,000 people who have remained in the
largely destroyed and cut-off city, despite the army's evacuation
orders. The Bhar family, however, had to flee the bombings on several
occasions and seek temporary shelter in other parts of the city, such as
Rimal and Touffah, bringing along with them Muhammed, who each time was
a little more frightened. At the end of June, when the Israeli army
deployed for the second time in their Shujaiya neighborhood, 17 family
members, including Muhammed, found themselves trapped for a week in
their house due to nearby shelling and gunfire. In the early afternoon
of July 3, soldiers finally entered their home to search it. They used
the standard method, breaking through a wall at the back of the building
and letting in a military dog equipped with a camera. The dog attacked
Muhammed. It bit him on the shoulder and torso, dragging him every which
way. "While it was biting him, Muhammed was petting the dog. He was
saying to him softly: 'Go away my darling, go away.' These were the same
words he used when playing with his nephews and nieces," said his
mother, Nabila, by telephone. Since the start of the war, the army has
forbidden Le Monde and all the international press from accessing Gaza.
'No news from the brothers'
Muhammed was overweight and completely helpless. "He had a pure white
heart. He was 24, but had the brain of a child. I did everything for him
- bathed him, fed him... He depended on me for everything," said the
70-year-old former teacher at a kindergarten run by the UN agency for
Palestinian refugees UNRWA. She yelled at the soldiers: "'Leave him
alone! He's sick, he has Down's syndrome!' But they didn't listen to me.
They let the dog drag him around the house," she said. The episode
lasted up to 15 minutes, according to Nabila. The attack was initially
reported by the Middle East Eye news site. The army confirmed to Le
Monde that it had indeed taken place, stating that <exchanges of fire,
between soldiers and Hamas terrorists,> were taking place outside. When
the soldiers finally moved the dog away, they turned to Muhammed's two
brothers, Saif and Jad Al-Hak, ages 39 and 31, handcuffed them and took
them away. "We have no news of them, we don't know where they are being
held," said a third brother, Mikael, a 42-year-old journalist who was
forced by the army to flee to the south of the Gaza enclave in the
spring, and who has remained in touch with his family by phone.>>

<<Israeli air strike on school housing a field hospital kills at least
30
A rocket fired from Lebanon struck a football pitch and killed at least
12 young people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights on Saturday,
Israel's army said, claiming the rocket was fired by Hezbollah, who
denied any connection to the incident. Also on Saturday, an Israeli air
strike hit a school housing a field hospital in central Gaza that it
said was hiding militants, killing at least 30 people and wounding more
than 100, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.
The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said an Israeli strike on a school
killed 30 people Saturday, while a rocket fired from Lebanon killed 12
youngsters in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Israel's military said
Hezbollah fired the rocket from Lebanon, hitting a football pitch in the
Druze town of Majdal Shams and killing the youngsters, who were between
10 and 20 years old. Another 18 youths were wounded in the attack, said
the emergency services. <Israel will not let this murderous attack go
unanswered and Hezbollah will pay a heavy price for it, a price it has
not paid before,> said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, according to a
statement from his office. Israeli forces and Hezbollah have traded
cross-border fire since early October, following the attack by the
Lebanese group's ally Hamas on southern Israel which sparked the war in
Gaza. Netanyahu later said he would hold a security cabinet meeting on
his return to Israel from the United States. Israel's foreign ministry
said Sunday that Hezbollah had <crossed all red lines>. <Saturday's
massacre constitutes the crossing of all red lines by Hezbollah. This is
not an army fighting another army, rather it is a terrorist organisation
deliberately shooting at civilians,> the ministry said in a statement.
The United Nations urged <maximum restraint>, in a joint statement from
their special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and
UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) chief Aroldo Lazaro. Intensifying
exchanges of fire <could ignite a wider conflagration that would engulf
the entire region in a catastrophe beyond belief>, they said. The US
National Security Council condemned what it described as a <horrific
attack>. <Our support for Israel's security is iron-clad and unwavering
against all Iranian backed terrorist groups, including Lebanese
Hezbollah,> a spokesman said in a statement. The European Union's
foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the <bloodbath> and called
for an independent investigation.
Hezbollah denial
Hezbollah had earlier claimed several attacks on Israeli military sites
after an air raid on southern Lebanon killed four of its fighters. But
it denied it was responsible for the deadly strike on Majdal Shams. <The
Islamic Resistance has no connection to this incident,> it said,
referring to its military wing. But Israeli military spokesman Rear
Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement early Sunday: <The rocket
fired by Hezbollah was a Falaq 1 Iranian rocket, carrying a 50-kg
warhead.> <This is a model that is owned exclusively by Hezbollah.> Iran
on Sunday warned Israel that any new military <adventures> in Lebanon
could lead to <unforeseen consequences>. <Any ignorant action of the
Zionist regime can lead to the broadening of the scope of instability,
insecurity and war in the region,> said foreign ministry spokesman
Nasser Kanani, adding that Israel will be responsible for <the
unforeseen consequences and reactions to such stupid behaviour>. At
least 25,000 Israeli settlers live in the Golan Heights, along with at
least 23,000 Druze - who traditionally follow an offshoot of Shiite
Islam and remained on the land after Israel captured it. Hours after the
killings in Majdal Shams, a Lebanese security source said an Israeli
drone fired two missiles at the village of Taraiyya in eastern Lebanon.
The strikes destroyed a hangar and home, without causing casualties, the
source told AFP on Sunday.
Deadly school strike
The latest strike on a school in Gaza came after a days-long military
operation further south that killed around 170, said emergency services
there.
The health ministry reported <30 martyrs and more than 100 wounded> in
the strike on Khadija school in the central Deir el-Balah area.
Israel's military said Palestinian militants were using the compound as
a <hiding place>. The latest Gaza strike, which Israel said targeted
"terrorists", was at least the eighth time since July 6 a school has
been hit. The strikes have killed more than 100 people, based on figures
given by the health ministry and a hospital source. With most of the
Gaza Strip's 2.4 million people displaced at least once during the war
started by Hamas's October 7 attack, many have sought refuge in school
buildings including the one hit on Saturday. Further south, in the Khan
Younis city area, around 170 people have been killed <and hundreds
wounded> in an Israeli operation since Monday, Gaza's civil defence
agency said. It issued the toll after the military warned of new
operations in the Khan Younis area, where troops had earlier recovered
the bodies of five Israelis killed during the October 7 attack and held
in Gaza since.
Aid effort 'destabilised'
Israel had warned on Monday that its forces would <forcefully operate>
in the Khan Yunis area. On Saturday, the military ordered residents from
more parts of Khan Yunis <to temporarily evacuate to the adjusted
humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi> - the second such change to the declared
safe zone within a week. The United Nations said that by Thursday, more
than 180,000 Palestinians had already fled fierce fighting there. Mahmud
Bassal, spokesman for the civil defence agency, told AFP that many
people had been displaced again on Saturday as the Israeli operation
continued. But with large parts of Khan Younis <not suitable for living>
and <no other options available>, civilians have struggled to find
safety, he said.
<Where will these residents go?> The evacuation orders and <intensified
hostilities> have <significantly destabilised aid operations>, the UN
said, reporting <dire water, hygiene and sanitation conditions in the
Palestinian territory>. Khan Younis was left devastated after heavy
fighting early in the year but the military withdrew in April. Now it
has returned in force. Israel said on Friday that its forces had
<eliminated approximately 100> militants in Khan Yunis during the week.
'End this madness'
The October 7 attack on southern Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,197
people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official
Israeli figures. Militants also seized 251 hostages, 111 of whom are
still held captive in Gaza, including 39 the military says are dead.
Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed at least
39,324 people, according to Gaza's health ministry, which does not
provide details of civilian and militant deaths. Egyptian state-linked
media said Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators are to meet with Israeli
negotiators in the latest push for a Gaza truce, which critics of
Netanyahu have accused him of blocking. The latest mediation efforts
have focused on a ceasefire and hostage release accompanied by increased
aid flows into besieged Gaza and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners
held by Israel.
